    I think WhatsApp is pretty fine, gotta say. Brilliant when e.g. communicating with groups for sports teams. You get pretty much 100% delivery, can see if messages have been read, drop files/pics/video and more. Email and text/SMS are nowhere near as quick, nor as reliable. WhatsApp desktop makes life even easier.

    @spongegeoff eh. Yeah.

    Except it's from Facebook with all implications and complications.

    Will never understand how people willingly use stuff like that...
  • 2
    @spongegeoff the user experience is terrible if your user case is something more complicated than "I want to send this message now to this number"

    @Electrineer Genuinely surprised you think that. Drag and drop pictures, set up groups, see what's been delivered and what's been read - all easy. Twitter, now there's a terrible UI... and likewise Facebook itself

    @IntrusionCM I use it because it's very good for communicating with people.If it's ruined my life, I have yet to notice.

    @spongegeoff sending messages works fine, but god forbid if you use multiple devices, want to export conversation history, or even want to import your local backup on a new device. And you'll lose your identity if you change your phone number e.g. because you relocated to another country.

    @IntrusionCM The thing is, where I live it's basically a requirement. Everyone in my area only uses WhatsApp including my whole family. So I'm forced to use it

    I don't like it too much either.

    @Zohiu "forced".

    Don't mean to disrespect you, you don't have to use any messenger at all.

    Your argument makes this even worse, cause you imply that you're forced to use a messenger due to your family and friends... Which is fucked up. In all kinds of ways.

    I had this discussion with some people before and some were pretty stunned that I formulated it so harshly, but that's the gist - and even worse than using a messenger from Meta.

    You don't have to be available 24/7… nor can anyone force you.

    :-)

    I use Threema sometimes and Signal, but my smartphone is fully muted regarding messaging. If anyone wants sth, they have to either wait or they need to do it the old way and give a call. That I might not answer.

    Simple as that.
