We all knew the meta shit was a dead end. Over $24 billion went down the drain.

There never seemed like a grand plan for it, at the time I recall Facebook getting lots of really, really bad press, even by their standards. Every week there was another whistleblower, another scandal, from depressed teens to fake news to genocide (https://tinyurl.com/474dx9bb), then all of a sudden this big announcement of...not much, really. A sinister video of Zuck sounding like an eight year old describing the computer game they're going to make, which will do literally everything imaginable, with nothing much to back it up.

Credit to him though, if credit is the word: it did get the fifth-wheels of tech (who have mostly since updated their LinkedIn titles to 'AI expert') talking a lot of crap about the Metaverse, and a lot less sense about how awful his company were.

I could be wrong, but the whole thing seemed like a dead cat to me. 2021 had this *and* NFTs, it truly was the year of the Tech Grifter.

I actually think his underlying vision is right in this area... and man is it painful to say that considering how much I despise the guy... but there's a couple of problems he can't overcome.

First, he's getting high on his own supply. He made it public way too early, before it was ready and in a presentable state, so he turned it into a joke in many people's minds and now it may be too late to turn that impression around.

Second, the technology isn't there yet to support the vision. We're probably not TOO far off, but not yet. He jumped the gun and didn't understand how far there still is to go.

Finally, at the end of the day, he's just not the right guy to usher the vision in. People will never trust anything he and his company does, not enough to allow it to be anything but a novelty, and that dooms it from the start no matter how good an idea it is or isn't.

Bottom line: it won't be Zuckerberg and Meta that usher the metaverse in... but it'll be somebody.

Regardless of the article's truth, it's fact that Zuck talks about nothing but AI these days. He has finally realized his stupidity with pursuing metaverse, but he's too prideful to admit it.

Metaverse will soon join NFT at the bottom of the ocean.

@fzammetti Metaverse will never become a reality until a VR headset costs as much as a low end android phone, and general public having access to 3 Gbps internet connection.
  • 2
@fzammetti that somebody will be Gabe Newell when he announces half life 3. I am going to make a very wild guess... 2035

Half life alyx is just a test case in preparation for it.

    Screencap this.

I'm not as much opposed to the idea of a metaverse as I'm opposed to the idea of meta holding a monopoly on the metaverse.

The first virtual social hub should be either open source or at least indie. Made by someone with a spine

@fckIE well, it wouldn't be quiet if there were official announcements

In a sense there are little universes out there, that are more or less their own communities and act like mini variants of what you could define as a metaverse (before facebook highjacked the term), take stuff like social vr (vrchat, neos, chilloutvr, etc.) and to a wider (and probably the more important) extent a lot of online games with social aspects (second life for example, but also stuff like discord, teamspeak combined with the previously mentioned stuff).

However, social vr will live with or without meta. They were a booster, nothing more, nothing less.

But, but, NFT? And Metaverse? We were supposed to live there. And buy and sell shit. With crypto. The future looked so bright!

We should all be very upset.
