I'm guessing it was more that they weren't expecting you to see the messages until the next morning.
I'm occasionally guilty of this, but try to take particular care in not messaging people who I know will check their messages out of hours. A "scheduled send" email for first thing in the morning is best for stuff like this. -

(Though it's good he pinged me - it was a valid and time-sensitive concern. But saying "I didn't mean to" - that's just not true. Call a spade a spade and spit out what you need)
