Remain calm, don’t freak out, remain calm, don’t freak out.
Ok, so my sort of new manager (had a slightly different manger-ish role on the team), has for the third time in as many months, just sent an email criticizing the dev team for our working from home-ness (which for the record has not been that bad, 2/3 or 3/3 have been in everyday for the past month)
In this same period, there has been late nights, weekends, successful releases, I’ve been invited to talk at a conference about my work (not a particularly big one, but still). Point is, everything is going well, very well in fact.
There has been no emails discussing our great work, thanking us for extra work, thanking us for picking up slack from other teams who are down a few people etc. no our major concern it seems is the “optics” of our team not being present in the open space.
Our contracts list flexible working hours, and his boss has frequently told us WFH is fine when things are too busy. But no he is complaining for us to get our hours in the office in line and make sure we are in the office more.
It’s been a particularly long and frustrating week, and I’m very tempted to inform him that if he is concerned about my chair and desk looking empty, that I can put them somewhere for him where they will always be occupied until a surgeon can remove them.
However, thanks to the deep breaths, I’ve managed to restrain myself long enough to run this past you all first and ask advice.
As a full time remote employee it gets lonely. Im getting ready to turn my home into a co-working space :
* Plenty of space with tables and couches
* Gigabit Internet backed by enterprise networking gear
* Lots of fresh ground coffee
* Local Kubernetes server !
* dog friendly chill space
* kid friendly play areas during the summer
* Mountain home with backyard hiking trails , wildlife lookout (wild deer live in my back yard), and fireplaces
What else would you want in your co-work space-at-my-place (TM)?11
Turns out the only thing that was ever needed in order to get IT to fix the VPN was a pandemic outbreak.6
Following on from: https://devrant.com/rants/1345037/...
I sent a polite but very frank email to the manager telling him I don't agree and think its extremely unfair to overlook the breath and scale of work we have done in the past few months. Instead to criticise us for this.
He didn't reply, or really speak to us for a week. Then suddenly one day the developers were all in a meeting room and he butted in to talk.
He first of all said he wanted to let things settle before talking to us, which gave me high hopes as I expected him to then say something like we miss understood, or he didn't realise etc.
... but no ... the next words out of his mouth were "I'm not apologising for anything, and I don't want to be told to piss off in an email".
A) Piss off = completely untrue and a massive exaggeration.
B) Go fuck yourself with a cactus.
C) See point B.
In that meeting we discussed the massive amount of meetings and work we have to do which was described as "just the job".
We were told we all have to be in until 5pm, but that we also don't. We need to be in the office more, but its fine if we can't be. And we need to cut down on WFH, but its ok to WFH ... so yeah everything is crystal clear.
I haven't written any code in 3 - 4 weeks. I'm now dealing with GDPR shit, and our internal processes to handle it (despite having no legal background). Have to fill out 140+ question surveys about each of our projects, which are the most vaguest things i've ever seen.
"Are you processing large scale data" - The fuck is large scale, oh wait heres a definition. "Large scale is determine by volume or percentage of population size" - How in the name of christ is that a definition? Fucking lawyers and their bullshit.
The next round of applications for research funding is coming around soon and were being told to work on proposals (which are huge and a lot of effort). While being told we need to define and improve on our KPI's for the year. While trying to find time to ... you know ... do ... work?
I'm just so fucking bored and pissed off with this place. I have to do the work of 6 people, nothing is ever good enough, devs have to do very non-dev tasks with little to no support. Bosses are just annoyed about everything, everyones in a bad mood and everything sucks.
A friend put me forward for another senior role in another company. Thought this would be my saving grace. They have a strict interview process with white-boarding (which I hate) and will likely ask about algorithms etc which I suck at. I'm so burnt out from this place I just can't find the motivation to go study up or prepare properly.
I just wanna write code, why is there so much bullshit in life11
Things I like about WFH
-save petrol and mileage
-work in underwear
-big TV during lunch
-time saved by no commute
-lie down during meetings
Things I dislike
-feel like my room has been invaded by work/miss the physical separation of work and home
-distractions and temptations
-they moved the stand up to ealier because of WFH
-Everything has to be a meeting. No just popping by someone's desk with a quick question
Sometimes I miss physically seeing my colleagues/getting out of the house but not often11
A real conversation I just had:
Brother: Have you heard of a game called Super Hot?
Me: Everyone has heard of that game.
Brother: Can you play it?
Me: I don't have the PC to run it.
Brother: I played it on my friend's Xbox.
Me: I don't have an Xbox.
*Pause for effect*
Brother: Can you build one?
(He's not stupid. He just likes to say things that will annoy me. We live in the same household, he would know if I have a PC or an Xbox.)12
I've been working exclusively from home for over 2 years now. I've been seeing several posts from people talking about adjusting to working from home, so I figured I would compile a list of tips I've learned over the years to help make the adjustment easier for some people.
1) Limit as many distractions as possible. WFH makes it much easier to get distracted. If you have roommates/family members at home, ask them politely to leave you alone while you're working. Make sure the TV is turned off, put your phone on silent, etc.
2) Take regular breaks. I find it easier to accidentally go hours without taking a real break from work. Try working in half hour intervals, and then taking 5-10 minute breaks. Read an article, watch a youtube video, grab some coffee/tea, etc.
3) When you eat lunch, eat it away from your computer. I often find myself eating lunch trying to wrap up fixing a bug, which makes it feel like I never really "took a lunch." Lately I've been trying to step away and do something else completely unrelated to work.
4) Get ready for work like you normally would. It's very easy to wake up, throw on your favorite pair of sweats and sit at the computer with messy hair half awake "ready" to start the day. Instead try doing your normal morning routine before sitting at your computer. It will help your mind and body go into "it's time to work" mode.
5) Keep your work area clean. I find it very difficult to work when my workspace is cluttered. Studies have shown working in a messy place tend to make us less efficient.
6) Keep your work area work related. Try to only have the things you need for work in your workspace. If you're working from your personal computer this can be difficult. I always end up with camera/music equipment left over from the previous night's photo editing/jam sessions. So try to clean off your desk when you're done for the night so it's ready for work in the morning.
7) Prepare for meetings. I have alarms set 10 minutes in advance so I can go from programming mode to meeting mode. During this time I'll go to the bathroom, grab a snack, water, mute all my email notifications, close any non essential programs, get my code ready if I need to present it.
Stuff is hard & stressful right now, but hopefully these tips will make it a bit easier. If anyone else has any good tips please share them.5
If Corona Virus, were to make a CV, it would make an interesting read:
1. Responsible for Global Digital Transformation.
2. Reduction of Global CO2 emission and Greenhouse gasses.
3. Global Hygiene initiatives: Ensured 100% compliance on washing hands and body bath.
4. Made industry shift to WFH - saved exposure and costs.
5. Reduction in noise pollution by making everyone keep their mouth shut (masked).
6. Taught cooking, vegetable shopping, housekeeping to many,
7. Provided ample time to all egoistic and self centered people, to contemplate on their mortal nature.
8. Provided a big boost to the Pharma sector and brought back small utility stores back into the limelight.
9. Highlighted the importance of governance, adaptability and long term planning, by all sectors.
Corona’s CV seems superior to many 😉3
Working from home. That time you spend commuting is spent on working. That random guy showing up at your desk breaking your concentration doesn't exist. If there's a bullshit meeting you have to go to, you can dial in, put yourself on mute and continue to work while listening and just unmute as needed.
Seriously so much more productive.11
"WTH! Get the fuck out of here, bitch!!".
I started a new job today (remote) and my first task was to improve product sign-up process, basically the UX is shit and the backend is even worse, never felt so bad looking at terrible software design my entire life and career. My first assignment was to introduce some sanity. (Mr. Supervisor's exact words)
Anyway, I report directly to upper management but need to get onboarded by current technology expert who's highly skilled at writing shitty code and is also stupid, literally.
It took the whole day to get him to grant access to the private repo in order to start working but that's not the story.
So, I'm seated, demoralised about the structure of software I have to work on and here I was refreshing localhost:7878 consistently and was consistently getting the message:
"WTH! Get the fuck out of here, bitch!!".
So, this same codebase I have is suppose to be the exact same one that's powering the app in production. I was furious and confused. Is stupid calling me a bitch already??? He wants to fuck??? What the hell!!!
I called him and turns out, I was suppose to switch branches. The branch I had was suppose to show that message intentionally (??!???!???) (His words exactly), I couldn't even muster the words "Why" completely before he hung up.
So basically, I got onboarded today. Quite successfully, I must add, because I know exactly the battlesuit I have to wear to my new remote job going forward!11
Wife ( working from home; to husband ) : how many whistles did the pressure cooker blow?
Husband : How am I supposed to know? I don't know!
Manager ( on Skype ) : Three! I heard three whistles!6
When you justify having a multimonitor setup to be productive when WFH but you just use it too game instead...2
worst part of WFH:
- The work PC is the game PC
- The game PC is the work PC
- Feels like i'm playing while working
- Feels like i'm working while playing9
I hate this work from home shit with your family around. "You're always in front of the computer, go workout, go socialize, its family time"
What part of "work from home" you don't understand. SMH!9
Find a place where management is able to handle some criticism.
I personally think Agile/Scrum is holy, and I don't mean "yeah we kind of do our own version of it", no, fucking do it by the book. The PM shouldn't assign estimates. Developers shouldn't receive bugfix requests from anyone other than the scrum master. The CTO can't be your scrum master... etc.
If a company can't answer the question "What were the points of feedback during the last retrospective(s), and how are those points being picked up?" -- Don't work there.
Many other things are optional in my opinion. I could work at a company without QA, without fruit baskets, table tennis, without Friday drinks. I could even live without git & continuous integration, just emailing patches to a patch integrator. I don't care.
But maintaining a safe bubble of serenity and sanity for devs to do their work in, that is an absolute must.
Also, option to WFH as much as wanted. Offices are nice for social bonding, but they kill productivity for me.6
Working from home now check out the new setup. All that's missing is some devRant swag "wink wink nuge nuge know what i mean yes yes ....." Let me know what you think.3
Company: Govt says you should stay home to prevent spreading the disease. PLZ WFH.
People start to WFH.
VPN gets overwhelmed.
Me: Cannot connect to VPN.
Boss: Then go in the office!!!
The division between chilling and working is absolutely gone when both happen in the same exact space.12
"It's sad to think that some people crave a commute because it's the only time during the day they have to themselves." 👀9
Working from home has added 10 hours a week to my life from not having to commute to the office.9
Woke up late. Hurriedly got ready for work. Booked an Uber. Opened slack to say I'll be late. Finds out everyone is WFH.
Now I am going to office alone in a 50 minute commute like an idiot.4
So, now that companies are used to "WFH", maybe we can agree upon a better office for tech companies?
I do actually think the more "ideal" tech company office wouldn't have to be expensive.
It can be smaller. Any tech company worth it's salt should have discovered in the last few months that it's not just devs who can work from home. Sales, support, management — you really don't need to fight your way through highway traffic or cram yourself into a sweaty subway every day.
There's value in having an office. Not everyone can fit a good workspace in their apartment.
But we could at least center it around:
1. A bunch of small, completely soundproof isolation booths, for those who need a focus space, and can't find a silent spot at home.
2. A social lounge space, a communal living room with couches, a bar, creative relaxing stuff, whiteboards, etc. WFH can become depressing even for the most antisocial employees, chilling on a couch with some coworkers to brainstorm ideas or chat about random tech is valuable for building good relationships with your team.
The "open plan office" with rows of desks and monitors, no matter how luxuriously decorated with vertical gardens and hipster desks from reclaimed wood, can go die a fiery painful death.
I either want to work, or socialize.
Open plan offices (and it's even more dystopian suicide-inducing cousin, the cubicle) are like being unable to choose between fucking and a blowjob, so you end up humping a navel.
Oh, and conference rooms, go fuck yourself as well. I want to be able to minimize your ugly face if you plan to talk about company financial reports for 2 hours.2
My job forces me to work 9-6 with a one hour lunch. Since I am forced to be full time wfh, I eat while working and take a nap during my "lunch".
I am much more productive.5
Losing weight (in the particular - belly fat) has an adverse impact on my WFH experience :( I can no longer lay on my back with my legs bent and have my lappy rest on my belly comfortably...
I can't reach the touchpad any more as it's now hiding behind my ribcage :(
I didn't think this through. damn it!48
“Dear Manager, the reason I didn’t complete my sprint task today was that while I was nursing my fiancé’s COVID vaccine severe side effects, said fiancé’s Chinese roommate put a jar of some fermented product called “Golden Smell” in a precarious place from which I broke it, causing a veritable golden shower of glass shards and odors to permeate the workspace. If you don’t hear from me by standup, tell my mom i’m sorry."5
Due to working from home I decided a few months back to invest the money I save instead of keeping it all in my bank account.
About 10-20% of it goes to a long term investing account and the rest into the one I manage actively.
The nice thing about homeoffice is that I can have a lunch break an hour later when the market opens and review my shit, then again checking up on it in the late evening before the market closed here.
Have been playing around with trading for years but never did it with patience and discipline.
After 3 months I managed to reach over 16% profit.
My account is small so it’s not a lot of money but I’m focusing on the % rather than the $ at the moment. It’s a start..
Anyway, thought I’ll share my progress with you guys as some of you probably invest as well..
Im exclusively swing trading, so holding my positions between 1-14 days with no leverage.
No line for the bathroom. Listening to music without headphones. Getting up and pacing around like a crazy person when I'm thinking. Cursing loudly. Not wearing pants. Petting my dog frequently.
WFH is the best6
Wasn't so much a question but...
Before WFH got so popular, I was interviewing at a place 50km from home, loyalty and stuff came up and the guy said something along the lines of "The only potential problem I can see is the distance. Now I get the sense you're quite a loyal person blah blah blah"
Half way into my third month they decided not to keep me after probation, after giving no negative feedback at any point prior to that then "we just need someone mors senior"
So yea, tune me about loyalty and then do that....
Also, if they needed senior why were they advirtising junior?2
Quarantine, WFH and sleep combo is really not working out for me.
I'm unable to sleep. Therefore I'm wide awake at 4AM, but will sleep for 12 hours when I eventually manage to fall sleep. But then, I have meetings tomorrow and won't be able to sleep all day.
Overall, fuck covid.
Thank you for listening.8
It's my end of probation and I just got demoted, from originally "Senior dev" to "dev".
My manager found it a bit difficult to tell me but funny enough, I am completely fine with it apart from the little dent on my pay check. Let me talk about the bad first: money. I believe I have been on the lower end of the market pay range anyways so this step-back gives me about 5% cut, which is acceptable and fair enough.
And the good? Quite a bit. When I got this job offer 6 months ago, it was when everything literally went to shit. I was upset with a somehow not so smart but stubborn tech lead and I desperately wanted to quit. Then I got the offer, which even after 2 interviews I still didn't recall it was a job ads for "technical lead". The manager thought I was not there yet but wanted to keep me as a senior dev. Then, this pandemic almost took away this job. My manager brought my case to the CEO and convinced him to keep me, by saying a lot of good things about me (which I think might not be true for the tech side...)
Throughout the whole 6 months I have been working remotely from home. WFH is not new to me, just this time it's very challenging as I was starting a new job. I have been struggling to keep my pace. All people in the team are nice. However if I don't reach out, no one would notice I need help. And with zero knowledge for this job, I got stuck with "I don't know what I don't know". This ranges from company culture, practice, new tech.. everything. So, that's how this 6 months feels long, but also short.
In our review meeting I think my manager finally realise this. Otherwise he would have gone for the "terminate employment" option. Taking away the "senior" title also takes away the expectation of "I should know XYZ", which I don't. I told him I am kinda happy with it because this sets me up for a more comfortable position to catch my breathe. He told me he noticed my improvement along the way. I told him yes I have been putting in efforts but just given the situation it's not as quick as anyone would expect. We're on the same page now.
So compared to my previous job, I got paid less. But in return, I get many more opportunities to expose myself to new tech. I get a good team who are respectful and open-minded. This is exactly what I was looking for and the drive for me to quit my previous job.
Not to mention I got a reality check. This is also an indicator for me starting to become an imposter, which is the thing I despise most in the industry. I don't want people to value me for how many years I have got in my career. I want to prove myself by what I am capable of. If I'm not there, I should and will get there.
And the last thing which I'm not very keen but it's 100% worth mentioning, is that my manager said I should aim for taking the "senior" role back. He said the salary raise is waiting when I get there. But... Let me just take my time.4
I took wk119 to clean my desk and make my wife happy (for a short period of time).
WFH Setup has been rearranged shortly and is not finished. Most of the soldering/Arduino/Pi/drone stuff has been removed and will get a seperate workbench soon.
Lightning is not finished as i plan to reinstall the smart lightstripes again.
But hey , cleaning the desk is enough for this week :-)3
I only went and left my god damn bag on the train with my work laptop in it (2016 Macbook Pro, started this job 2months ago...). Now I have to get up at 5 fucking 30 am to make a 5 hour round trip to collect it while making up a BS excuse to WFH, or more accurately - work from some cafe in a random city 200 miles away. FML8
My company is thinking of closing its office, and many other companies are doing the same in a bid to save money now that they realise WFH is just as effective.
I'm not a fan. Working from home for the next 30+ years with no variety in the physical environment, experiences or interactions I have in those 8 hours of my day is an absolutely depressing thought to me.8
This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.15
My manager is so insecure about us working from home that he has started stalking everyone on social media...6
This is probably not a popular comment, but here are the reasons I sometimes do not like working from home.
- if I don't get food, the kid starve
- if there's a meeting, the kid decides to play piano
- I have to watch delivered food that needs refrigerated to rot, while I really want to focus on that mudafukin bug
- if misus is not sleeping during the day, there is a 50% chance I smell something burnt in the house
Feel free to add to this list8
[least fav part of wfh]
Not being able to have a conversation with coworkers.
No spaceous modern desk setup.
No distraction free environment.
No free coffee and lunch.
No 1500W sound system.
No 2gbps internet.6
Fuck WFH. I'm so tired of kids yelling. people eating, fucking noises and people leaving their desks for hour, and sayigg I'm sorry I was speaking on mute. Fuck WFH. Everybody needs to get their asses back to the office, and actually do the damn work.
WFH only works if you have kickass passionate people who love their job with an ounce of responsibility.11
## Building my own router
IT HAS ALREADY PAID OFF!!!!!
So I (with my fam) have evacuated from the capital of Lithuania into a distant place - much smaller, where average age is prolly >30 or even >40 years. I live in a village now. In a house with very good neighbours. In fact these neighbours own that house :D
Back to the point.
So these neighbours used to share their wifi (w/ internet) between the two houses. They have the line, the mian router has quite a strong antenna and that other house has 2 repeaters: 1 on the outside wall and another one -- indoors. Sepeaters are connected sequentially, i.e. the indoors one is repeating the outdoors one. ikr....?
The first day was alright. We settled in, got everything set up wifi-wise. Peachy.
The second day repeaters refused to issue a DHCP IP. That's something, right? Alright, nvm - I don't mind setting up static IPs. In fact I prefer them over the DHCP magic!
And by the noon both repeaters were connectable but neither of them could provide internet connection... We that sucks! I restarted both of them a few times, neighbours restarted their main router -- still no luck.
Here comes my router [God am I happy with this purchase and the whole idea of a customized router!!! Thanks @hakx20!].
I brought it outside, plugged it in. Connected to it through it's hotspot, used nmcli to connect to neighbours' main router with an internal wifi card (that shitty mPCIe operating in USB mode. yes, the same one, manufactured in 2003. Yes, in g mode.). A couple of iptables rules for traffic forwarding et voila! I have built my own repeater! And tomorrow I can WFH w/o any issues.
Yes, hardware routers are faster and easier to maintain. Yes, hardware routers are cheaper and usually have nicer bells and whistles. But when hardware fails you and the last thing you want is going to the public (shop), soldering rod won't help you. A software solution becomes the easiest to set up, considering you know how to.
Boi am I so happy about my purchase! CentOS router FTW!
P.S. even though we've fled the city we are responsible citizens and we've self-quarantined ourselves for the 14 days period. No local person any closer than 10 meters for the whole period until we're cleared. Being away from the city gives us sooo much freedom! Especialy now, when cities are shitting bricks in fear.5
Working from Home email translations:
“I don’t feel well” - I’m hungover
“I have an appointment” - I’m hungover
"Car won't start" - I'm hungover
“Delivery coming today” - There’s actually a delivery coming today... but I’m also hungover3
Got a 1 day of alone time :) 8 hours WFH ant then the (almost) whole evening was MINE. Guess how it went :)
Coding until 2am and falling asleep on my keyboard, waking up on a cold lappy at 5am bcz its battery died and its aluminium frame was freaking freezing.
I know right? That was an awesome evening! I've managed to catch and fix some nasty bugs!6
I just received an email about my company releasing an official full time work from home policy. I’m so happy.
It coincidentally arrives at the same time I’m building my first desktop PC, which should be ready on Friday.
This one is interesting
- 9 to 5 (including breaks) aka WLB
- Building products in my area of passion (Music, Art, or Travel)
- High paying (I don't care for those perks like free food or bean bags)
- Enough vacations without judgement
- Continuous innovation (fuck your 1830s product)
- Good social capital (teams should trust me for my decisions)
- WFH where I can opt to go in to office whenever I want (so that I can build my awesome battle rig at home)21
For God's sake, check if your fucking webcam works properly and then say yes for an online interview.7
What is this behavior WFH?
Boss: When will you send the report?
He: Have already mailed you
Boss: Your voice is breaking...
He: Have already mailed it
Boss: What? I'm asking when can you send the report?
He: Mailed... Already... Check... Inbox...
Boss: Your voice is breaking... Say that again
He: HAVE... MAILED... ALREADY
Boss: It's not ready ?? Just tell me when can you send it to me...
He: Aghh... NEVER.
Boss: WHAT DO YOU MEAN NEVER ????
He: ... *Silent*
Boss: ... *Silent*
He: Boss, can't hear you clearly... Your voice is breaking... ;)

Before covid 19 I was already working from home. But now I feel that the media makes it sound as if we have 40hours a day. Get more hobbies, practice them all, at the same time! Pfff2
Do you think that "Work From Home" or "Remote Work" tends to reduce the work life boundary for the employees?
What I think is that Managers feel fine pinging employees at any time of the day. And as employees either you get good at ignoring messages or work outside the working hours.20
Literally painful dev learning experience: Do your damn stretches and invest in a good chair.
Spent a couple of months of WFH working eight hours a day in an awful chair and started getting back pain out of the blue. Part of my first paycheck after that went into a decent office chair, in hindsight I should've spent more on it but goddamn what a relief it was not having to spend an entire day in the tiny, back-breaking piece of shit my landlord calls a desk chair.1
What is the thought process which goes behind wearing a mask on a video call meeting?
[a] virtue signalling
[c] <insert your answer>13
I read somewhere at the start of the global pandemic: when it comes to work from home life, you should never underestimate the benefits of a power nap.
My gods, that person was right! I only wish I had taken advantage of it more over the last year.1
Work from home
- Free time from commute, more time for gaming
- Free time from commute, more time for dev works
p.s. I'm more tired these days2
Fartin' around with Godeps and having difficulties, but things aren't nearly as annoying when you are able to work from anywhere while drinking craft beer :^)
WFH!! // worst
I've been social distancing myself from everyone, I don't even know how to properly function amongst people anymore o.O
I have a meeting at the office today, I'm so anxious as if I'm applying for a job there..in a field I've never worked on..flying there with a choper for the first time, me flying it of course.. naked & already on fire o.O Oh & I'm also wearing sweatpants as nothing else fits anymore..yaaaay.... Can't wait.. :/4
I think my manager has this false impression that just because we are working from home, we suddenly are gifted with lot of free time.
In my experience, the work life is horrible like this. I have not seen much day light in the last 2 weeks.
I don't know how long i can stay sane like this.16
It’s still WFH in India. So, everything at home is a distraction. Indian households are noisy ones. Heavy traffic, loud music, constant interruptions by family members.
Appreciating the fact that I can code in my pyjamas without people judging me though.2
So despite being able to do my entire job much more effectively from home, it's been demanded that I go in 2 days a week that "show my face".
Upon getting to the office there's no parking spaces, I go round the carpark again and woohoo there's a space!! Awesome..
I come back a few hours later to work the afternoon from home and find 2 cars double parked behind me..
Both owners seem to be off site currently.......... I guess this is my life now sitting in the car park waiting for people to move their cars 😂5
As a developer, I WAS love with the concept of WFH. Thankfully, my office has no fixed hours (except for meetings!) and I can work at my pace peacefully. But lately, with WFH becoming mandatory, I can't seem to find time for myself!
Here's what my schedule looks like:
a. Start working at 10am
b. Standup at 11:30am
c. Lunch break at 2am
d. End work at 7pm.
A fairly simple routine but not sure why my team finds it completely normal to call me in off hours and moreover expect me to jump in a call too! I wish it was a 1-day affair. But no. It's a 24x7 day affair. Yes, let that sink in. 24x7.
How I wish there was no COVID and thus no lockdown. At least, people respected the work timings then !5
Company with CULTURE
Company who doesnt allow tech team to WFH but editorial team is fine (or sales)
Sonos playing ALL DAY, and sales team talking all day, next to tech team desk
Dont u love open space offices?
Literally slept off during this zoom call. I just woke up I don't wth everyone is talking about. Turns out my PR was up for discussion. Now I have to review a bunch of shit I thought I was done with. OS maintainers can be a pain sometimes 😭5
Popped into a general tutorial meeting on zoom. (for work)
Now I'm stuck midway and I want to bail and go do other things but don't want to be rude to the speaker. 😛
Can't even sneak out of this with the excuse of going to restroom. 🤦🏻♀️5
My mouses right button kept double clicking. This makes it really hard to play minecraft. It was a cheap logitech mouse from a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. So I went to the store to find a new one. Almost all the wireless mice were gone. Apparently WFH people hit walmart. I didn't want another single wireless mouse. This would mean I need the adapter for the keyboard (for keyboard mouse combo) and the new mouse plugged in. My computer is a laptop so there are not a lot of those slots. So I looked for a bluetooth mouse. Only one there and it was a sucky Razer. I have not liked Razer since they required people to register their software with an account before using their drivers. This really made me avoid this brand like the plague. So I finally settled on a wired gaming mouse. It has a nice long 6ft cord so it works with my setup. It is a G502 Hero. It works really nicely without drivers. I will be testing with drivers tonight. I usually buy el cheapo mice so this is new to me. So far so good.18
Just want to put it out here... reading this will waste ur time. :(
Having a serious crush on co-worker. I tried not to have a crush on him initially because he’s a colleague and he seems to be much older(max 10 yrs I guess). Age isn’t an issue but ppl say it’s not good to like someone from work.
But then he kept on glancing at me and caught him turning back to look into my cubicle at several occasions. Saw him looking at my direction across the room, hall, turning back to look when he was waiting at lobby, and all the way from smoking corner as well. Could be possible that he just happened to be looking in my direction several times.
Now, haven’t seen him since early feb because of the quarantine. Luckily, I chanced upon his number when everyone in the dept was put into the same chat channel for the Covid19 news. I had this urge to ask what was it all about because we’ve been told to wfh till further notice. Who knows what could happen to us during these period.
So tried to be brave and asked abt why he was looking into my cubicles several times, without coming out weird (I hope). His reply was “dont know”. I don’t know what to make of it. Could have been anything else but how could someone just reply don’t know.
Then came yesterday, my friend was telling me about her experience on tinder. Apparently she’s been using it for fun and she got funny texts from the guys there. So I decided to give it a try. Man, it was so fun swiping left all the way (cuz they couldnt be compared with work crush) till I swiped right for this older guy. We matched!
He was the first one to match, probably abt 5-10mins after I’ve finished setting up profile and all that. It was totally a new experience for me. I forgot abt my work crush in that moment. He had this minimalistic vibe. Didn’t smile much in his photos, gave me calm feeling and looked so cool. He put “Everything is good in moderation” in the bio. He’s the only one comparable for that work crush. Not sure who’s supposed to start saying hi. My friends said wait for the guy, so I waited.
Got a few other matches after him but didn’t like them as much as him. I finally decided to say hi. No respond till today. Given that he put Doctor for his occupation, I assumed he’d be busy. So I waited. Then sent another in late afternoon asking if he plays LoL often (he’s wearing LoL land yard in one of the photos). No reply.
I started to feel weird because this is supposed to be light and fun because who takes things seriously on tinder, right. They’re there to flirt and kill the boredom especially because of the lockdown. And I started to have serious feelings for this one guy whom didn’t even bother to reply. So decided to delete tinder for good. Sent him one final msg that I really wanted to get to know him and I thought he’s a really cool handsome dude. But now that I’ve deleted my acc, he wouldn’t even see my msg anymore.
His profile name is Randolf. I want to get to know him in real life. But is it illegal? :(
Thank u for read this far. I just didn’t know where to put all those feelings. And sorry for wasting your time with nonsense.20
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6
WFH and I got up to get a mouse for my laptop. Five minutes later, I sit back down with a plate of fish. Dammit, brain, wrong animal.
Is anyone facing micromanagement due to work from home? The calls are happening every hour and feeling more like prisoned, Go corona go!!8
This was meant to happen eventually with this lock-down and WFH thing. In the beginning everything was fine but then my brain has completely lost the ability to distinguish between work place and home.
I am neither able to work properly or rest/sleep and productivity is out of the window.3
Sorry to repost,
I had made a request for friends post last week, but someone mentioned my discord link was too far down, so maybe people missed it.
So here it is chirptune#1829.
Again, I'm doing wfh and having decent anxiety so I would appreciate talking to someone. I can also hear you on your problems.
Public transport is slowly getting quieter and quieter. One side of my enjoys the silence and space, but the other side wishes I had the option to not take it either.
Everyone WFH, I envy you...2
I’m a homebody anyway and never want to leave the house. Now I have a valid excuse for not leaving the house. Feeding toxic and unhealthy behaviors? Yes. Is right now the time to care? Probably not. Queue bingeing 12 hours a day of Udemy courses.6
WFH is nice, esp when you can spare a separate room for work at your house/apartment. VoIP is also not a problem, it's even better is several ways than the real thing, as you can chat with multiple people at the same time without dragging them off their desks. Even better - screen sharing sessions.
However, there's one thing I don't understand. Why would anyone do video calls? I mean.. why...? What's the point? If I'm on metered network I'll be charged extra only because I'll have to stream out my ugly face to people who don't want to see it and stream in all the other ugly faces I don't want to see. My voice will become laggy, I'll miss out on some details, and all that because of some completely unnecessary overhead.
So why would you want me to enable my webcam? And why do you feel the need to show your face to everyone else? Why is this necessary...?24
I need some advice, because I'm feeling like I'm getting ripped off by my company.
I'm a junior developer and this is the first company I've every worked at. I've been here for 1 1/2 year. I said in the first interview that I am proficient with a fullstack framework, for a rather niche programming language, but I don't want to do front end, because I'm not good at it and I generally don't like it.
I'm the sole coder working on a project that costs the client 100EUR/h. There are others, but they just organize the tasks I have to do. This project requires me to work a full stack of retardation server, that's a pain in the ass, not really compatible with this project and required hack after hack to be fixed. Finding bugs in this pile of shit often takes days of emailing around and asking for logs in hope something might pop up. I've had to scavage through threads saying the still bleed form the anus or have PTSD, beccause of this retarded stack. As you can imagine, I'm also responsible for all of the QA and obviously get shit for bugs. I'm supposed to remember every little detail I've done in this project at the end of the sprint, while also working on 2-3 other projects simutaniously.
I've developed some small servers with dashboard and api for apps on my own. I'm supposed to also do all of the QA so that my boss doesn't see any errors, because otherwise our clients have to be QA.
I have written a complicated chat system that is distributed across nodes. We've nearly missed a deadline of 6 days for this shit, because I've been put under preasure, because I estimated such a "large" amount of time for this.
Other things I've done include:
* Login/Registration on many projects
* Possibility to add accounts for subordinated, with a full permission system for every resource
* Live product configuration with server validation and realtime price updates
* Wallet & transaction system, dealing with purchases of said product and various other services offered on this platform
* Literally replaced the old, abandoned database framework from a project with a modern one.
I've made some mistakes during the WFH corona times, but this that doesn't mean you can put more preasure on me and pull stuff like this: https://devrant.com/rants/2498161 https://devrant.com/rants/2479761
Is all of what I'm doing and have to deal with worth the 9EUR/h salary?10
Working from home is still not without its challenges. I’ve been doing it for 6 years. Today I solved the dilemma of how my wife can book her own events where I’m needed to watch the kids during the day. A simple hashtag in the calendar description and an IFTTT recipe now adds a “Busy” block to my work calendar.1
My net went down..in the middle of a fuckin update.. then my phone data took forever to fuckin locate our vpn endpoint..
Who said WFH is stress free?! O.o
I wanna go back to da office😭😭😭😭😭5
when you are at someone else's desktop/laptop and the screen is so dirty you can almost see what that person likes to eat.
And if that's a touch-screen, you are literally touching what that person ate weeks, months ago.6
Aaaaaaaaa!! Anyone else getting crazy from WFH?! I'm starting to talk to dead plants..excessively.. o.O Blaaaaaaah!! We're on WFH for at least the end of month.. Fuuuuuu...
I hate WFH..12
WFH vs Office, what will be your preference in a post covid world?
I'm sure after the covid saga ends, there will be a plethora of remote and WFH opportunities since businesses are now ready for it. Most big companies in our place (Like Microsoft, Google, Amazon) have extended WFH till June/July, and Microsoft even said it's gonna be way more flexible in letting ppl WFH16
My motivation disappears day by day more when wfh. Always sitting in the same flat drives me crazy and I'm missing socializing (as a person more on the introvert side).3
The idea of going back to work in an office terrifies me. Like...it really scares me. I really hope things work out even better than I hope and I get to keep working from home while still projecting my career upwards.4
The amount of work I do in one day of working from home, ensures that I can just slug around the office for the rest of the week.2
Anyone else usually WFH on Fridays?
I noticed a lot of other people doing it so I just... quietly started doing it too. My boss is remote so I think it’s okay... at least he hasn’t said anything yet 😏3
When you come 1000kms away from office to home.. and promise to do WFH and the wifi at home is slow...
Too many backlogs this sprint...
After one year of WFH I've just realize that I'm much much productive (and happier) by sleeping some extra hours at morning, doing outdoors activities during day and deeply focus working at late night.
I wish it to be healthy. I will let you know.2
Mandatory WFH for everyone for the next 3 days.
I have just this weekend moved to a new apartment and haven't got WiFi yet. :/3
Just realised I have not seen some regular users on devrant for a good amount them. Listing them now :-
linuxxx (Last action 75 days ago( a ++))
SortOfTested(Last action 51 days ago(a comment))
Linux(Last action 50 days ago(a ++))
This list might not be accurate3
This has just happened
general channel to discuss sonos.
I have sales team less than 1m away.
this office is a fucking pub.
free beers, people telling jokes and
having non work conversations, free beer/wine.
The dream! unless you want to code.
if you want to code....ah NO WFH POLICY.
My company just pulled the trigger on wfh. They just sent out an email saying tomorrow's the last day any of the offices in the region are open. Come in and get your shit. See you on teams.
Most of us have been working from home for a while anyway but there's been a few holdouts wondering why no one's coming in. It'll be interesting to see their reaction. On teams.
We have been strongly adviced to be working from home until further notice. Schools are closed, so if employees have have who are now to stay at home rather than at school AND if WFH is going to be too much of a trouble, these employees can either take vacation days OR get a med cert from a doctor and stay at home w/o having to work (yes, considering the situation our govmt allows legal slacking for parents).
Normally I'd be excited to be told to WFH. But nowdays it just feels so.. normal... everyone's got that privilege.1
I am working more effectively nowadays from home rather than from office.
At office, I end up spending most time in eating, playing table tennis and meetings.
The only thing I am missing at my house is my 2 big 27" 4k office monitors.
One thing I have realised these days is that I don't like the work from home setup.
Maybe it's the because of the bad working environment.
I actually appreciate office space more now. Once, out of office, it was easier to zone out of work mode and I didn't feel this much tired when working in office.1
What would you use for building the baclend of a moderately complex web application that probably will have a small userbase?
Ruby on Rails
If what you would like to use something else that is not listed feel free to tell about it in the comments19
IT's going around making sure everyone is able to work from home. It's gonna be like the shining at my house by the time the situation is over. I like having wfh as an option but 100% is gonna do my head in4
I used to think work from home have lots of pro like we can save our travel time, don't need to dress-up etc and I always wanted to do wfh. But this Covid-19 pandemic made me to hate work from home now I want to go back to office so that I have fix in-time and out-time and proper 8 hr work time.5
@localhost finally got around to posting my WFH space (not pictured is a Surface Book and Surface Pro 3).
@sheffter not everyone has an immaculate desk ;-)5
Nothing changed for me. The problem now is I can't go out as much.... And somehow I'm slacking off less...
Might have something to do with manager now expects everyone to be in at 9... So that means I gotta get up at 8...
Usually wfh I get in a 9:30 no questions asked... U know 30 mins for coffee, bathroom etc...
Now I gotta make an effort to at least login...
I feel like taking a sick day but now those seem scary too since they'll think I might've caught the virus...
For some reason I now wake up at 6am every day...
But after like an hour in bed reading emails/news, I feel tired and then go back to sleep till 9am...
Anyone else waking up early since wfh?6
Tldr: intern here, I like staying in my workplace for longer than my work hours. Is it going to cause me trouble if i become a permanent employee?
Long story: So as per my previous rants i joined a startup as an android intern, company is of around 80-90 employees with many teams and standard/sad rules like 9 hr shift, 1 paid leave per month etc.
I was worried of these rules due to being a regular clg student and living very far from office, so i complained and got a little compensations like 7 hr work shift, few half days and work from home days, etc
Now the thing is : i actually have kind of started to like this work. Its been a month and i took around 12 days leave last month for papers, but marked some of them as wfh and half days, so deductions were not what i expected (although payslip is yet to come, which would have given a better explaination). But overall Pay is decent, work environment is chill ( people work in teams here, but since am the only android dev, i got no timelines, or tech leads. Just the ceo, whom i send a daily progress message), there are good refreshments available and after papers, i am pretty much free.
So I like staying here for longer hours like 8, or 8.30 hours. My family is also working, so they are usually not much worried, tho my mom starts sending messages when i leave after 7. But this friend of mine, keeps saying "its wrong, your managers are gonna call you weak and would force you to work for more hours when they notice you can come for 9 hours , etc"
So am i doing the wrong thing here?3
dev1: where are all scrum masters?
dev1: can I do that?
dev2: yeah, but you need their approval first3
Come back home after 2 months of absence (during quarantine I was away) just to find that tomorrow I'll be WFH w/o internet.
Sounds like it's gonna be a productive day!1
Are airwaves cast by WiFi and cell towers dangerous. Please link a credible source for it. During lunch my father brought up the fact that a actress sued the Indian government asking them to announce of 5g is dangerous or not. I said that it is not dangerous since we get higher amounts of radiation at us every day so 5g should not be anything dangerous for us. I should have said that it is non ionising radiation though. He also brought up that fact that there have been numerous instances of misleading advertising saying that what we use at our home is bad like saying ghee causes cholesterol which is bad and then a few years later saying that ghee is actually good. He just believes that companies could be doing false advertising saying that 5g is good when it actually is not. Can't blame him since he has seen multiple instances of false advertising.
Digging up on Google landed me on a nytimes article which basically said radiation 5g airwaves not effect us since our skin reflects that off and the small amount that does not get reflected heats up our skin to a negligible amount8
TL Dr :- Debugging a software I barely know about was slow and ended up breaking in the shop it was used in and reverting the changes does not solve the problem
I asked my father a few days ago why he was buying a dedicated server for his ERP software and not using a client computer as his server which he is doing in his shop currently. He said that it was slow on other computers in the LAN which is an wired. The solutions given by the company that made it did not work. Big bills would sometimes also dissapear which took around 30 minutes to make. So when he bought the computer to home during lockdown I pulled up the debugging guide from the company which summed up to check latency, ram and add these files to exclusion list of your antivirus. Latency was kinda high at the first when pinging another computer on the LAN but I was testing on WiFi so it could be pretty inaccurate. The computer met the ram requirements so that was not a problem. I checked the data path by opening the software and accidentally typed something but I did not worry since the changes needed to be manually accepted. I added the files to the Windows defender exclusion list and shut it down.
Next day :- My father calls me up and says the software is working on the server but is broken on other computers. So I check if the changes were automatically accepted for some reason and yes that happened. So so pull up a guide to configure the software in multi user mode and I replace the mistyped setting with the correct one and it still does not work. My father asks me to undo everything by using anydesk. I remove all the exclusions I added to Windows defender and disable windows firewall. Still does not work. Restart the computer and software. Still does not work. Check permissions on data folder. They are correct.
WTF I reverted all the changes I made and the software does not work on other computers.7
What do you do when your family time conflicts with your work time? What can I do to rotate my work schedule forward so I can get some fucking sleep without giving up on either work or my family?
This sucks, I get like 5 hours of sleep at night and my job wants me to be here no later than 9 for whatever reason.
Not to mention my commute is about 45-60 minutes both ways
Not to mention I'm making just enough money to cover my bases. Going to Costa Rica for a vacation is no where near my ability.. hell even driving across the state for a weekend trip would be wildly out of budget.
I've tried asking for a flexible schedule and ability to work from home as needed but its just become a circular debate.
I'm getting burned out and always feel tired, have no energy to stay motivated or give a shit7
Thank you theabbie for giving your location on your devrant profile. Some devranter might be able yto meet you though it will certainly be mot me unless that is a joke. Inputting the location writen in the brackets gives a location somehwere is navi mumbai23
Writing in cammelCase [or snake_case] means I have to press SHIFT quite frequently. Aaaaand now I have a sore pinky from pressing that right Shift all the time.
I've heard of the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Also heard of the student's elbow syndrome.
Is Shifting Pinky syndrome something we, developers, should call a thing? :)12
Work from home and all is fine for current situation but I still miss working my office. It was a pleasant environment to work, used to meet colleagues, take breaks and engage in fun events. Quite a lot of that is missing right now. Added to that I don't have access to secondary monitor at home and my eyes burn after working for just few hours. It happens sometimes that I would be really in the mood to finish work in afternoon but have to log out to reduce eye strain. It also pretty easy to get distracted at home. I don't like the feeling of being less productive and hope this situation improves soon...7
This is probably the worst place to start my Rant saga but this is recent (this is one of the last few episodes of a 3 series cluster fuck of a job so you're missing out on all the straws that go into breaking the camels back and making him unaccommodating)
TL;DR I do good work, management dont like me and go out their way to try and fuck up my days
So, lets start, I'm a contractor, got funeral Tuesday, book leave, book WFH for day after.
I leave in 3 weeks, woman who is the CIO's right hand bitch takes me into a room the next day or so in the morning to discuss my WFH day. Leave on tuesday is cool but this WFH day...there's only so long until I'm gone so they want me to stay in for more face-to-face time blah blah blah (considering this woman isn't even part of the project I'm working on anymore because she decided to deflect it onto a underqualified junior with no PM experience)
So I sit there, thinking of all the blood and sweat that I have shed, the mountains I've moved just to be told to move the mountain somewhere else and whether coming in would kill me (in other words im fucking burnt out!!! I have built their GDPR database and app backend single-handedly with no requirements, project managers who can't plan and being chastised for asking for documentation/plan/anything written down and having the CIO who is also the fucking DPO ignore any emails/slack I send him relating to the project and having to keep up with a team of devs....).
So because there was a momentary silence, she decided to fill the gap
"Oh, you've done some good work so far and I wouldn't want you to ruin it all in these last 3 weeks. So just come in on the Wednesday so that we can have you here."
Hmm....yeah...i didn't notice what she had ACTUALLY said there, still thinking about can i be fucked? So she decides to add
"...there's only 3 weeks left, wouldn't want you to burn any bridges. Remember, we still have to give you a reference"
....Okay....shots fired. So i respond
"You saying, if I take a WFH day, you'll give me a bad reference?"
"Noooo no no no, not saying that, just that you've done good work and we wouldn't want you to ruin it"
"With one wfh day?"
"We just want you to come in because the developers might be coming here that week"
"Oh... I hear that...what day?"
"I dunno, it's not been booked yet"
".............................I'll think about it"
"There's nothing to consider"
*Start leaving room* "I'll think about it...."
So cool, obviously, had a think, decide to shoot over an email (or more accurately, a collection of bullets). Which basically said, in devRant translation, "Fuck y'all, I'm WFH on that day, I wish a motherfucker would fuck up my reference, we can go that way if you want it. *snaps fingers* I. WISH. YOU. WOULD! "
Woman says "I wasn't threatening you, was just saying...dont ruin your last 3 weeks, wouldn't want you to burn any bridges and that we still have to give you a reference"
What kind of Godfather comment is that?
Come in today, the CIO, who is a prick who don't like me for whatever reason, sends me long email trying to disrespect me and in the midst says "I’m sorry that you have chosen to react like this, I’m sure that [my bitch] was conveying a position that your last three weeks of contract are crucial for a smooth handover. I have made the decision to not require you to work from home on Wednesday. I understand you are on leave on Tuesday and therefore this is now extended to include Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you back in the office on Thursday. I hope this will make the situation better for all parties."
.................................thought you lot needed me in the office to ensure a smooth handover................logic..........people.............where the fuck do you get yours from!?!?!?!? All this just so they can say "We made the decision at the end "
I adore working from home. However there is one negative I’ve found and that is moving my wheeled chair on carpet 😒4
Anybody know why a good amount of active members like linuxxx and SortofTested have been inactive for a few months. Also why has there been a green dot explosion5
Like most said, the home part 😂
I rejected the remote opportunity and decided to move to California in December, just to be locked at home for 2 months now8
Ideal WFH afternoons...
Listening to the remake of old melodies or other soothing songs while coding without interruptions😌1
WFH gives me a legit reason to splurge and upgrade my pc: "using a VPN connection to remote into my workstation is less than ideal for development, Dear; I should really upgrade my memory and storage if I'm going to be developing at home for while. I assure you this has nothing to do with gaming or dicking around with virtualization."3
What is your wishlist for things that need to die or change next year. Mine is :-
1. Games that use peer to peer and have servers for data. Please buy servers on aws or any good cloud service.
2. ISP's that block all incoming connections for security5
TLDR: I don't feel the need to be working at top product companies anymore.
The craze to be a developer in top product companies has literally worn off for me in the past few months since I am working from home.
Like if I have to continue this WFH lifestyle it literally won't matter if I am working for a top product company or a startup...
The priority has shifted towards
1. A good team
2. A well-natured and polite manager
3. A flexible working culture which is better suited for remote work
4. And obviously a good salary🤑6
What's everyone looking forward to these days?
With wfh, and well bring stuck at home honestly feels like there not much difference between a weekday and a weekend. Or a vacation vs staycation. I used to look forward to the latter, but well my game collection getting boring and I can other take out anyway of the week now.... Same with taking walks when the weather is nice... Now it's dinner tho so too hot.
And part of me feels like going into the office so I don't have to pay for AC...
But everyday sorta feels the same now...8
Went to gym after 7 months,
I think my kidneys sifted to into my ass cheeks or my ass cheeks engulfed my kidneys, can’t tell which one.
And after coming home at 10:00 pm i see a ping
Oh my fucking god it’s 10:00 pm can’t it wait till morning?
This kind of question has been asked before.
Is coding on mobile actually a plausible idea or should I just leave the idea. I am mostly doing some c# with .net core. It is mostly console apps
I wont have access to my laptop for quite a while because I spent quite a lot of my free time on my laptop. Also me being dumb refused their offer of 1 hour of continuous access to the laptop every day.10
[best part of wfh]
Absolutely nothing, i have great equipment at the office, my colleagues are my friends and we have a chef who cooks great food. At home the only good part is that i have my ps4 but i use my vita at work so its not a huge pro.3
Do you look forward to working?
My friend seems to feel working is a good distraction from worrying about the virus.
To me though, I don't hate work but would rather just take off instead of wfh...
Just don't feel like working... But dunno y...8
The one time that I decide to not skim the company newsletter because I've been super busy...
It apparently stated that today would be a holiday....
So I logged in and worked all morning till I asked my boss why they weren't in...
At least it's wfh... And well with I need to get done sooner or later....
Now I'm going to binge tv all afternoon....
Hm... Not much different... Mondays off too... More binging....
So my future isp Jio fiber is rumoured to be using DPI. Main proof comes when a executive said "It’s called Deep Packet Inspection, and what you can do with the analytics of that is mind-boggling," in a new article. https://reuters.com/article/...
Should I be afraid or am I just being paranoid. Also should I just switch to another isp altogether if they are using DPI.
Also mini rant :- They make it harder to use your own router by not allowing bridge mode on their router and custom onts dont seem to work. The best option is to connect lan port of their router to the wan port of your router and disable wifi on their router3
Spent all afternoon and night, trying to get Windows reinstalled on my old college laptop because my dad needed another pc since I'll be using his personal laptop to wfh.
1. DVD Drive is faulty, slow/faulty reads
2. I don't have product keys (they're all stores on a USB disk, I should make a backup... that I didn't bring back to their place) except for Vista and Win 8 but Win 8 key already used by another PC. I have a burned Win 7 disc
3. Apparently it had a virus which was never removed, fresh reinstall never done. It hides the DVD drives and kills the internet and makes the installers think there's only 400MB.
4. I followed some wiki that said to Mark the C drive as Active... Which fixed the issue but then I decided to do the full install from boot... Except on reboot, apparently this fcked up the MBR
5. Tried googling how to fix the MBR, eventually found some USB app that supposedly fixes it. Create a USB boot disk, not recognized
6. Finally try the DVDs and release it recognize them somewhat when booting... Win 7 one kept hanging on the load screen
7. Somehow Vista got thru and actually installed...
Now IE and Chrome both complain about HTTPS issues and how they don't support Vista...
But at least my dad now had a laptop he can use to do non-work stuff while he uses his company laptop to do work.13
Work from home, jerking off, ranting co-workers/bosses during an online meeting forgetting to turn off my cam and mic3
I WFH 100 percent of the time. I've been doing do for over a decade. The number of times I've had some disease while WFH is the same as it was when working on an office. There are so, so many other factors.4
This question is a bit dumb
Why do browsers block asynchronous requests when you use local files from your computer3
Having my first work from home today lets see how it goes with slack and mail in my hands as my work from home tools 😄1
To work from home, I recently bought an internet connection at home. It has pretty good speed and is affordable for the base plan. The speed is around ~ 35 Mbps. Never had that fast internet in my life.
Now I have this sudden urge to buy a console and start gaming. That would require me to also buy a TV screen. So I'm now dealing with a temptation that would cost me atleast $500 in total.
This corona better stop soon...5
Is xamarin good for cross platform app development or should I use flutter. I am planning to make the app for windows too so xamarin seemed better as it is owned by microsoft and desktop support isntin alpha3
Working from home is fucking bad. I'm finding myself skiving big time. Finding it difficult to focus, letting people down because when I should be working - my feet are up on the table and I'm on YouTube with no pants on. Also - the code I have been contributing to the repository is utter shite.
Had food poisoning and was out for 2 days. Now we're all 100 wfh cuz of coronavirus so I was going to catch up. But then our build and deploy engine went down and since it is controlled by a third party vendor, we have to wait for the ticket to be fixed. I think the powers that be are telling me to get drunk, fuck the schedule.
Not Dev related but just need to rant about parents....
They keep asking me to do things for irrational reasons...
Latest one: tmr is 9/11, can you WFH (from public library where I would need to disconnect and carry a 17in laptop too)
ok, i think i am playing on very thin threads here. since the last 2 months, i have been teamed up with 2 very senior devs, and i have been somehow accidentally been able to proove them wrong and myself as innocent/foolish in front of even more bigger people.
i am a junior dev, and i think its best if i am as loud and transparent of my actions as possible. therefore i ask questions in slack and discuss all things with my android tech lead, who i think sometimes might even get frustrated with this because he already is working in other stream with his own tasks. we are a small company , and even though I think i am a junior / SDE1 i am one of the 2 devs in the android side handling the biggest stream of our product. so i guess he expects me to handle things on my own or at worst take help from my senior ( the other droid dev).
But oftentimes we are both working on 2 different tasks so i usually coordinate with the dev working on the same task on the ios side, and that brings me to story 1. So ios dev is a 7 year old experienced guy working for 1+ year with the company. So while coordinating on the task , we 2 had decided that we will be doing the task in the same way: same approaches, giving the build on same day, etc. we came on a mutual common approach to logic , but since platforms are different , i ended up implementing slightly differently. however during the process of dev, i came across certain edge cases that we had not discussed before. so when i asked him about what should happen if such case occurred and he was like " no that can't happen. they must be sending us correct data otherwise we are not at fault if app breaks". so i didn't liked that but still handled the case anyway. during qa, the testers caught the same bug and he had to then fight and then ultimately fix it.
so here ir starts to get interesting. He fixed the bug but again with a different approach. this time when a similar hug came, he somehow prooved that his approach his correct and android is doing it wrong. i was not able to fight back , and a lot of pressure came on me because our prod day was near. so i honestly explained all the situation to my TL. i was like , i did what i had told before and even TL was in my favour, but at the end i had to change it as it was easier to change on my end.
but ever since that day, i guess that ios senior has got a hatred across me, as i could have just silently changed the things on my end without involving everyone. i don't like this, he is really a cool guy but i was afraid that everyone's gonna blame me if stuff broke on the last day.
instance 2 : this time i accidentally ratted on the stream lead himself. so the new sprint started , we got tasks assigned onto us. one of the task was a big one and required some r&d as well as backend/Ui. the other 2 were easier but also required me to discuss stuff with my senior who was already very busy as he got even bigger tasks. so i started with the big one. then again, me being me was loud enough to involve everyone (adding the task in daily status , asking android tech lead for help regarding various decisions... etc)
our qa build is generated on Friday. Since Wednesday i have been telling that i have made 50, 80 ,90,..% progress with the ui, when will i get the backend apis and everyday they would say, the backend guys are busy with the other task, we will pick up this task's BE after that. so friday has arrived and today in the standup it was decided that my task will not be going in current sprint at all ( i mean it was decided to not get tested due to less bandwidth of testers, but i thought be would eventually provide the apis and this will get shipped as a hidden feature)
so i told this to my tech lead and his response was .... just silence. now its wfh and I don't know how is face would have looked, but ir ain't surely isn't happy.
so accidentally or intentionally, i am diverting the blames on other people and not sure how is this going to look on me. i mean i could avoid a lot of these situations by taking decisions on my own and owning to them, but that also doesn't feels like a right approach, given am a junior.... so this.5
Sorry for posting a non dev goal
1. Check every social media ultra often and the first thing in the morning. I was late or sometimes completely missed something because I did not check my social media. Today I missed school because study leve was kinda cancelled. But guess what did not check my social media for the announcement and checked it in rhe afternoon when school was long over. No nwed to check email because nearly nothing important comes there except my report card which is resent on whatsapp 4 times a year5
How should I inform a government website that one of their user password combinations is in a short metasploit password list. The list name is tomcat_mgr_default_userpass
The top exploit db vulnerabilities for tomcat verison did not work so kudos to them on that. I am just a script kiddie
Edit :- Forgot to mention I am an Indian citiizen9
This question might make you lose a brain cell because of stupidity in the question. Read with caution
Is there a way to compile a game for Windows from Linux in Unreal engine? I did google some posts but the answer was either use a Virtual machine which will not be done or use the the theoretical method of using mingw but the forum posts state that it will be tricky business or use a windows machine. I have dual booted windows with linux on my machine.
However since the machine has a 512 gb ssd most of the storage space is devoted to unreal engine which takes 47 gigs in itself and have a lot of programs installed I have a usable 20 gigs left out of 145 gig partition. Windows has around 318 gigs of storage to it but I have 100 gigs free at most. So after installing the windows sdk, visual studio with extensions, unreal engine and some other stuff I don't have much space left for myself. I need that much space since I install a lot of games to my ssd. So now I cant load my bigger projects for playing on my windows. I could use my hdd which is mostly used for backups and 100+ gig stuff. Though the hdd's are of course far slower than ssd's which shouldn't be a problem however last time I used visual studio it ate more than 2 gigs of ram for a solution meaning that the compiler has very low memory for itself to actually compile so for any large files the hdd has more of a bottleneck.
Oh and I can't upgrade my ssd's or ram because I don't have enough money.
Thanks for the answers in advance5
Another newbie question
Is ruby on rails worth learning now and is it dead ? I am a bit of a newbie to backend. I did create a site for a friend a year or two ago with django but still it was pretty simple. My horrible code is available here :- https://github.com/akshaytolwani123...
Also is this course on coursera for free on audit decent for the basics https://coursera.org/learn/... or should I just use freecodecamp or similar.5
It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.
Don't know what working environment lies ahead of me once this lockdown get's over but I hope I adjust again in similar manner there too :D
What should i use for making a app which needs to learn on both android and windows and maybe ios. It is pretty simple. Mainly needs notification, network and file acccess, does not cost an arm and a leg, uses less than 1 gb of memory at a time and being able to be used as to make a backend is a plus. Being able to be used commercially is a plus too. Also please suggest somehing that does not have a steep learning curve3
Why some leaders are afraid of changes. Everything in the world change and adapt to the trend of responsibly remote working. We must count the productivity and not the negative impact of envious people that all they can do is sit down and pretending to be busy. We all know that the first step of success is to accept change.1
How do you know it is Monday in the office?
Everybody are either working from home or suddenly took a day off lol
I'm usually really productive when I work from home. At my Seattle gig, I worked from home 3~4 days a week (most of my team was in New York City anyway). My current company does not do remote work well, and I've been terribly unmotivated. Our useless manager took the entire week off to work on his house he's trying to rent out.
I'm usually not one to worry or panic or even check the news, yet I've found myself doing that all the time now.
It's been very surreal.
Employees of companies that are so protective of their intellectual property that they don't allow any to be transfered outside of the workplace, how do you work from home?4
We had this revamp planned for this week. We were supposed to brainstorm and then come up with solutions. WFH hit it hard!! no solution coming out...
So far not much has changed in my office, only a colleague or three are working from home for two weeks as a precautionary measure after returning from a Coronavirus hot-spot.
For myself I see little danger: I commute by car, the office is so far Coronavirus-free, and I still have to go to shops to get food etc.
I'm more comfortable working in the office, as the environment is set up better, and I can chat with colleagues more easily when needed. If I should need to WFH for extended periods, I'll need another monitor (currently I have one nice 27" BenQ monitor on my desk at home), and a mechanical keyboard (the one I bought is in the office).
Kind of !dev
Googleable question but I though you guys will give better advice. I am curious about computer networking and want to learn about that a bit. Any resources you recommend.9
Was curious abut how painfu to work with and deploying .net core, asp.net core, blazor and xamarin are. I am currently learning c# and I have heard stuff such as ".net is a dumpster fire" and xamarin has had pretty negative reviews. Is that stuff true4
Received a Slack message basically telling us not to panic and that it's not fatal (then saying it's less than 3%), and we'll have sanitizers in the office.
So, if we wash our hands and use the sanitizers often, we'll be just fine.
Didn't stop me, though, from getting WFH. So, got back to my home city and I'll be working remotely from here for at least a week (starting from Monday).
Will get to extend it to two weeks if it doesn't impede my work.6
I have some module which is not working at all, It is written as cron and now I don't have idea How to debug that
I miss office :(
This WFH sucks
I could have taken the help from my seniors But in WFH they just leave the messages after seen or on call --> Network problem -> talk to you later :(6
What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9
Having this stress at work especially when they monitor your performance during the WFH . Not doing rocket science or stuffs. but angular front end dev.
api dependency was delayed.
Stuck at some bugs which I think user can never reproduce but a tester did.
All of them is busy with their own ML stuffs and impediments.
Having issues with staying home and work. I dont know this is just me or someone else having the same issue. I am just trying to share. Anything you wanna add?
Sorry if this has been been asked before and asking useless questions
What are your thoughts on the mac ec2 instances1
Any tips to speed up wordpress site. I have googled and tried as many solutions I can except adding cdn. I have minified images, html, css and js. I have used caching on the server with litespeed cache. There are not many plugins on the site.
The plugins installed are elementor, litespeed, orbit fox, wp-optimize, updraft plus and wpforms lite. The site takes around 4 to 5 seconds to fully load. I am doing this for a releative(don't worry he is sane and I am doing pretty simple stuff for him which is simply not worth charging). I cannot use cloudflare cdn since they need nameserver access and the hosting service used is hostinger which have put a lot of dns records which I don't understand and don't wanna mess with unless it is the last option.12
This ad should be titled: "Meet Spot Enterprise", faulty gauge and reactor melt down -- all from the comfort of your home
When should I develop a website myself using whatever the hot framework currently is and when should I just use something like a cms because it is too complex for only one developer to make the website3
Firstly give me the skill equivalent to the best in the field. If the rules allow it all of these skills listed and if not any of these :-
1. Computer networking to the point of having the same knowledge as the best in the field. Why? I am curious about that stuff and being able to work as a network engineer if I don't get a good Dev job
2. Cyber security. Why? I enjoy it and being able to make sure my code is not easily exploitable is a cherry on top. Also having a backup job in case I don't get a good dev job
3. Being able to communicate with non dev people about developer or non developer stuff easily and being a really good leader.
4. Being a good developer in whatever language I use and instantly being able to learn new programming languages and frameworks or libraries with ultra in depth information.
I’m so fucking bored..
we know there’s lots of requirements coming at some point and we’ll be as busy as it can get, but right now, we’re just sitting on our arses trying to find anything to do..
And working from home is not helping with the boredness..
Its very simple to get PMs to leave you alone; have a good long talk with them about their goals, motivations, and methods. Try to understand their thinking, then preempt the visit to your desk with something to make them not come to your desk.
Or get a WFH deal and dont answer any comm requests.
What are some good companies for consumer networking equipment. I need a unmanaged switch and might buy a router from them. There will be 7 cables run though it. I have heard praises for ubiquiti but mostly from U.S. youtubers and I live in India so service might defer. Being cheap is a plus point.3
Is huwaei insane for saying that 1 line of their harmonyos code can do 100 lines of android code. I watched this in a coldfusion video. Link :- https://youtube.com/watch/... , The line I mentioned is at 11:557
Inspired by a @rawdreeg post, Does anybody else feel like their coworkers judge them harshly because they work from home? Do you feel the need to justify every piece of your work day?
Any gift recommendations. My birthday comes up in a few days and he asked what I wanted as a birthday gift(gifts are supposed to suprises but being able to choose is good still).
However I cannot ask for electronic gadgets. That knocks a lot of stuff of. The exception is that if something does not make me spend more time on the computer that is allowed. Kinda weird. For example I can ask for a printer or medical equipment like oximeters since that wont make me spend more time on the computer. Both of these examples were given by my father. I could ask for a new printer however we still have a printer but it is currently in the shop since it is not being used and the shops printer broke and is hell to replace since they need chips to verify toners and you need to get those chips separately from what my father told me and the shops printer should be repaired in a few months since lockdown was lifted a few days ago and I won't need to print something since everything is online and they don't need to show student projects yet.
Thia knocks a lot of hardware off since by definition if I am using hardware I still need to code it to do something which is more time on computer which is not allowed. So no fiddling with aurdino or rasberry pie or whatever is the most used hardware kit.
I can buy some course or a book to learn something but I already have problems with consistently learning c# with a good book which will lose value in November and that most topics I would like to learn like computer networking or some new language are practical which is more time on computer which is not allowed.
So the only thing I can buy are some books to enjoy reading for fun or some school books like a science digest book like Together with or the ultra popular maths reference book RD Sharma
So what things should I ask which comply with the rules my father has laid or just skip this thing1
What are some backstage computer science jobs(jobs most people dont know even exist but keep the show runnning and are pretty important)3
Some good news for aussie devs working from home:
Easy tax deductions for working from home. 80 cents per hour
Hey guys! Can you describe some of the problems y'll are facing with virtual meetings because of WFH??22
My team just spent all afternoon again their wfh setups.... They all use multiple monitors and laptops...
I never picked up on the idea though.., multiple screens always felt distracting...10
Yo anyone who uses hikvision, do they still use npapi requiring use of older browsers or a plugin or other software like iVMS1
Any good free resources for full stack web development. Also if a resource teaches mainly frontend but also teaches some backend it is a full stack web development resource in my eyes. I was looking at freecodecamp but it is a bit too vast for me. I am also looking at the cokplete intro to web development v2 course by Brian holt for free on frontend masters but it is 2 years old and has not been updated. Also it does not teach that much bakcend hust node and express.
Also another question is frontend masters good for web development. I did not find many threads about it. I got a discount for it which gives me a one year subscription for 195 dollars18
I want to learn c# to build a mobile app with xamarin and a website with asp.net core. I have some programing experience and have build some meh apps. What should I use
Head First C#, 4th Edition
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition
C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition teaches what I want to learn but the Xamarin section seems a bit short. C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight was recommended a lot to beginners online and I can always learn Xamarin from Microsoft Learn12
Has anyone here used app academy open. Is it good and does it teach useful and up to date stuff? I was thinking of doing it but there are barely any reviews online. There is a reddit thread about why it is handicapped but it is old and a user clarified it was misinformation. https://reddit.com/r/...
Their curriculum seems to be pretty good except that I will need to learn ruby on rails which I need to forget after the MERN stack part and that they teach docker compose instead of kubernetes
Should I go for freecodecamp or app academy open or some other free resource to learn full stack web development. Freecodecamp's explanations are starting to get over my head. App academy open seems great except they teach ruby on rails before teaching MERN stack and there are only three reviews on the internet I could find12
On devrant I sometimes see a good amount of posts saying angular is garbage but nearly none about react. Why is angular so hated.3
Should I write my app as a pwa or in electron. The app needs to be on mobile devices too but I wont mind rewriting the app for another platform since the app is pretty small. It only needs notifications, network access and basic read and write access to write some pretty small configs. Most of the code will be for the ui anyways1
Not exactly a rant but some annoyances
Whenever I copy paste code from kindle it does not space the code. Stack overflow says that kindle is using characters for space which are not present in UTF-8 which causes the issue and the find and replace option coes not work in vs code which the author is using. And if you copy from kindle whether you use the button or Ctrl + C it will add the book title and the author at the end. Who the fuck though this was a good idea.
Oh a table does not fit on the screen render whatever fits even if it is the top line of the table. This is probably not an issue and they cannot fix it and I shoild just deal with it.
The author introduces me to the language compiler and lists a command to what versions are available. I get an error which says the command is not found on windows. I dont find any solutions on google, so I go the next place and author says that he knows about it and shows a link to fix it and tells to folloe the instructions. But the link does not have any instructions and just has instructions to configure the compiler itself. The only releveant information was the path to the compiler which the author could have included there or said that was the only relevant information. The path was correct but I needed to install some stuff through Visual Studio2
Fuck people using trace rifles in momentum control. How the hell am I supposed to kill someone who kills me in two rounds and also fires at 1000 rounds per minute. I was trying to get the catalyst aka upgrade for the seasonal weapon which is pretty bad and the upgrade makes it usable but I am getting ripped apart after my first kill because someone can kill me with 2 bullets wherever he shot me.
Yes momentum control is supposed to be a gunfight mode and it comes around rarely but that does not mean a broken weapon can roam around killing anybody in sight before they even know you fired a shot at them from some lane. Shotguns do the same but you need to get close. Shotguns are still a problem but at least you can dodge or counter with a shotgun since your radar tells you someone is nearby and snipers need a headshot. These weapons can fire at your toe and you are dead. Oh the devs knew that such fast firing weapons wil be op and needed their damage and made them use the same ammo as shotguns, sniper and non heavy grenade launchers. However the game mode gives all weapons a damage buff which is enough for trace rifles to be broken. Yes you can use other primaries but what are you gonna do when a auto rifles kills you with two shots to the toe. And since they burn ammo quickly and take more rounds to kill then their counterparts like shotguns which use he same ammo as them they spawn in with 50 in the mag and anybody who is using shotguns snipers or grenade launchers give them ammo and they only need two rounds to kill. Also after I kill 50 PvP opponents I need to kill a few hundred opponents in PVE or PVP to actually apply the upgrade and who you kill does not matter.
Seriously and the second weapon I want to upgrade which is able has tracking but you need to aim down sights after hipfiring the tracking shots
which dl negligible damage so they explode or aim down sights and shoot which deals more damage but I am probably not going to have enough time before some random kills me again.
And this is just the first game. From what I heard it was supposed to be a fun game mode which focused on gunfights with your primary not the infamous laser tag show of Prometheus lens which happened a few years ago but now all trace rifles can do that. Oh and I still need to get 50 kills there for a seasonal challenge so I can get the free version of the premium currency and I can only skip one challenge and I have already skipped one challenge since it requires a dlc K don't own.
Seriously why cant some actual good game come up to challenge this. All the competition seems to be third person shooters. Also most of the guns don't feel good and lore is pretty lacking but lore is not top priority. The only competition is Warframe which is not my style, Titanfall 2 but I get insane pings from here so no multiplayer so after the story nothing to do unless I want to do airtstrafing which is useless since I can't play multiplayer. Granted Titanfall 2 is not a looter shooter but the guns feel good and the movement is too good and Halo 1 - 3 since I heard 4 and 5 are pretty bad and I have only played halo 1. I might complain about jackal snipers in halo 2 but at least they have fixed spawns.
Maybe I am overreacting since it is my first game of momentum control
What sucks in wfh setup is there are so many attendance to fill out. Then there’s this tracker that I forgot to time out, then updated it the other day getting the current date time it’s like I work overnight lols
I need to run wordpress on a Windows server or Windows 10 to be used for a medium sized WooCommerce site for a reason I don't want to state. What is the best way to do this. My best options seem to be :-
Docker with caddy
Linux vm with or without docker10
Windows why do I need to explicitly tell you in a firewall rule to allow port 80 to allow someone in the same NAT as me which is set to a private network to access the web server?4
Sorry for asking this question again but I got no replies or releated replies.
Is app academy open good for learning fullstack web development for a newbie or somewhat new to web development. There are barely any reviews on the internet about it. I did kinda ask about them in one of my previous rants but was recommended fullstackopen by @100110111
. I started fullstackopen pretty recently. App academy seems good too but it is a 1000+ hours soo I wanted to know if I am learning anything useful there.
Also thanks @100110111 fullstackopen is pretty good5
