A friend of mine and fellow Dev is facing deportation back to Mosul, Iraq. He's in Sheffield UK doing his PhD, and was taken to a detention centre in the early hours of the morning a few days ago.
I am sorry to spam this place but I am desperately trying to get this petition out there. It hurts like hell to see a friend in jail over Christmas.

Thought my PC was locked, turns out the screen was just asleep.
Only found this out after I typed my password into a WhatsApp web chat and hit enter...2 -
My company is getting a new website. This involves getting new hosting.
I made the old one, and it's all just static html. I'm not that attached to it but it's an important detail.
The bosses want the switch to the new site to happen instantly, but I pointed out that with DNS propagation times etc it can't really happen that way.
So I suggested the new web guys host our old site for a few days and we change the DNS now. Then when they want to launch we don't have to wait for the DNS and they can just swap it out.
This involves dropping 10MB of html files into the web directory on the new server.
For this service they are charging us for 2 hours of their time!
I guess I'm in the wrong business... -
Not code per se but a company I worked at ran their document control from a giant spreadsheet. Each row had info and a link to the document.
It was all in one directory anyway... -
!rant Thought you guys might be interested in this new-ish (compared to say... Futura) programming font, Iosevka.

It's configurable and can be compiled from source but also has pretty good defaults. Really enjoyed using it these past few weeks.2 -
Email: "We just launched our new web interface! It's so much easier to use, and should make life a lot easier for our users."
Me: Oh good this thing has been unusable since I've been working here. How do I get on the new version? Better read on...
"Download this PDF for more information!"
Erm... ok.
In the (20 page) PDF: "Email this address@example.com to get the URL!"
ffs ok
email: "Thank you for emailing us, you username is benoliver999, your password is 'passow0rd' and the url is in this attached PDF
god help me
(50 page) PDF: "Remember to disable pop up blocker, ad-block and to install Flash"
Today I have started building my own version of this product so we can stop using these idiots.
As an aside, the username 'admin' also had a password of 'passow0rd'...4 -
So I just got an email from some marketer with over 1000 addresses in the cc field.
A few of these people have already hit reply-all.
Have people forgotten how email works?3 -
"...OK now if you just open a new tab, you can see the link appears there."
"What's a tab?"
It's going to be a long fucking day. -
Fell into it. We needed some custom software at work but we didn't have the money to make it so I stepped up.

"When people visit our site, can we make it put an icon on their desktop so they can load it up quickly in future?"7
