Spent the morning watching my brain outsource a two-digit addition to the calculator app. Twelve plus thirty-seven. Reached for the calculator. For real.
Turns out years of autocomplete, copilot, and "eh, the IDE will tell me" quietly nuked the one skill that used to make me feel clever in standups: doing math in my head before the analytics dashboard finishes loading.
So I built a thing to fight the rot. Quick mental-math drills, escalating difficulty, timer breathing down your neck — basically flashcards that judge you. Ten minutes a day and I no longer panic when someone asks "whats the rough p95 if we cut that in half."
Not a course, not a subscription, no account. Open tab, get humbled, close tab.

++age
Can’t believe it’s been a year already. Currently enjoying a month-long break from work, almost halfway through it. Realizing that I’m at an age where I need to recover from going to a museum, which is wild. But I’m taking the time to visit museums during my PTO instead of just sitting at home binge watching shows like normal.
Unrelated, I tried to crochet a Chucky doll and it turned out.. interesting.

Is devRant Losing Its Spark?
Hey ranters,
Anyone else notice how quiet devRant has become? Back in 2016-2017, this place was buzzing with energy, but now it’s down to just 10-12 rants a week. What happened? Did competition from platforms like Reddit or Discord take over, or did devRant stop evolving?
I still believe this platform has huge potential—developers will always need a space to vent and connect. But without fresh ideas or a clear roadmap, it feels like devRant is fading.
To the creators: what’s the plan? To the community: do you feel the same? Let’s discuss!

When I was learning to program nearly 15 my years ago I was incorrectly lead to believe that dividing by zero would be a much more common problem.10

I hate when installers have "British English" and "American English" listed
It should say "English" and "English (simplified)"10 -
The most important difference between C and C++: in C you can make errors, but in C++ you can also inherit them.😐1

Never write at the limit of your talents! Remember: debugging is always twice as hard as writing code. And if you write as cleverly as you can, you won't be able to debug it anymore.🧠7
