Ok guys I need advice, haven't posted in a long time.
A profesor is asking my team to build a java application that runs on a server with a very specific tech-stack (database, container, encryption, use-case and UI design) it's basically a fully fledged app that I know would cost somebody hundreds if not thousands to buy. The thing is I'm getting the feeling he's using us to write this code and then later distribute it while all we get is 20/100 points we need to pass the course. I heard rumors...
So what I wanna do is throw it on github (he's obviously expecting me to open source it at which point he forks it and bam!) and slap the most restrictive license on it. Now I don't have much experience with licensing or this sort of thing... any advice? I want to be able to go at his throat if I ever find out he used my code which I'm supposed to spend 3 weeks writing for free for a fucking "uni" project that's worth a fifth of my grade in that one semester course!19 -
University decided we have to use Wolfram Mathematica with instructions how to *cough* find it *cough* for free. I was really annoyed with this, because I didn't want to "find it" so I stumbled upon SageMath and it's working good enough. I get pissed when somebody tells me I have to pirate software (I'm no saint, I've done it before), it's not fair to students who don't have 100$ to throw at a software they'll use for 3 months and never again probably...6

I'd teach the basic principles of researching technologies, choosing a technology stack, proof of concepts and reading and understanding documentation. If this is done correctly it's 50% of the project. Nowhere on my CS uni has anybody mentioned these things, and I see other students are failing because they don't understand how to start a project or read docs.

Well this class was useless, btw 2h have passed... WASTED TIME!!! The professor has been fillabustering for 2h2

I had to write a js bpmn flow designer for a huge bpmn app on request and my crazy brain said fuck it I can do it in 2 months, let's just say I made my deadline with school and all. And it actually worked very well it needed only a bit of bugfixing when it hit QA.

Dad's coworker (he was a software engineer, I guess it runs in the family) was selling his pentium 2 computer for 100$ and my dad bought it for me to play chicken invaders. Those were simpler times...1

With all the CES nonsense, wouldn't you love it if they didn't make shit smaller and thinner and actually made it the same size as 5 yrs ago. While upgrading battery life and cooling... I see all these new laptops and small form factor pc's and I just think "well there is something to keep me warm in the winter". Priorities people2

Are there any alternatives to xcode, my old mac is having real problems and I hate it? I'm open to any suggestions, the only thing is it needs to be free.2

I'm supposed to write a term paper about a scrappy python/sqlite3 project I put together in a day. And even though mine is the most advanced of all the student's programs (it's cocky but it's true), I feel so ashamed... It is so scrappy and useless... Now I'm supposed to pull something out of my ass, what I did or how I did it sounding all pretentious and proud. After I get my grade I'm wiping it off my disk for sure!1

#include <helpme>
Ok guys I kinda need your help. I have to write a python project for my school in 3 days and instead of saving everything in files I want to have a database. So my question is can you suggest the most simplest and easiest db to create and connect to Python for a few simple tables. Also the easiest to set up on another computer since my professor will probably want to try it at home.
Also I have to learn Python in 3 days, since I already know a couple of languages, I'm confident I can pull it off. Why I'm asking for help is I need to document it all, that will probably take a chunk out of these 3 days.5 -
Uuugh the 3rd of January first working day in my country, I am dreading 2018 already with the backlog of issues I decided not to fix in 2017 as if they'd magically disappear. Hello darkness my old friend...

If Apple didn't jack up their prices and offered decent dedicated GPUs they'd actually be fuckin great... the greed is just too damn high with them
P.S. I might have to get a Macbook because of an iOS project, but I really want something that can game at least a bit... at the end of the day it's not my decision, I'll get what they give me3 -
Best: Started working successfully, raised my self confidence, can finally see my future
Worst: Started feeling the effects of too much work on my mental and physical health (bad eyesight, back pain, weight...)2 -
Supposed to write a really simple 2d game and an AI to accompany it, thinking about doing it in JS as it's for a University project... I need to finish it fast(don't really care about the quality hence JS) and have been looking on a game engine/framework called MelonJS anyone heard of or used it? Grateful for all advice u can give. The AI I think I've got covered, but also any advice is helpful...

The sentence we all dread:
"My stereo (insert any other piece of home tech...) is acting up, call ______ he works with computer's he'll know what to do"
ME: "Take it to the service shop, I'm a programmer not an electrical engineer"
After that you can't help but think they're thinking you just suck at your job... "pff he know's nothing" -
Stupid stupid university custom exam IDE... first thing select a few lines hit tab oops replaces code with tab character... compile is alt+C and run is alt+R (never seen that before) and you have to go save -> compile -> run.. instead of just hitting run and last but not least it syncs your code with the server so every save file takes 3-5s at which time the editor freezes
ALSO NO DEBUGGER OR JAVA CONSOLE...6 -
I'm looking to get a laptop, and I want your opinion on which one to get, because I'm a dev and don't care about whatever most reviews are looking at. Here is what I want from it:
1. I'll be running linux on it
2. I need it to be powerful enough to go through heavy development
3. It has to be decent sized 15" and below
4. It needs to stay cool under light load, under heavy load I've got a good cooling pad
5. Battery is not that important, and discrete graphics are not that important
I will be hooking it up to a keyboard/mouse/monitor setup when at home or work
Any suggestions? I've been looking at lenovo thinkpads for their ruggedness and dependability and Dell laptops as they've been around for a long time. Ultrabooks (like the XPS) are appealing but I don't know how well they deal with heat and thermal throttling under heavy load? -
4h spent on installing very old drivers for a old stupid wifi adapter for my little bro's computer... fuck it tomorrow I'm buying a 10 meter LAN cable...

My professor just asked the students "so what is a queue?"
Some dude answered "First in last out"
Profesor says "Nope, a queue is a list" (as in a linked list)
Also he said no very bitchy which pissed me off... I mean a queue can be an array, a list is just one implementation?
Hate it when they blatantly simplify something (and outright butcher it) to make explaining it easier4 -
Rant! When you live in a less technically advanced country, and everyone cheaps out on their software and hires the company that will do it for the least money and because of that it never works decently you can't reserve movie tickets on the cinema's site and get a SQL constraint error directly on screen, if you can't afford custom software buy a license for something that works out of the box ffs
(I'm goin' to see Star wars ofc.)2 -
Worked all my life in C++/Java and for the first time in Android, finished the android app (ffs that's one messy framework)... now they give me an old macbook and send me into swift/xcode, I have been trying to connect two text fields and a button for 90 minutes, getting furious knowing I have to finish this app all over again for ios, please tell me how fucked am I? Is it better or worse than Android when it comes to a learning curve? I've googled this and usually it's fanboys fanboying, has anyone done both and has any advice?
P.S. I'm young and still tend to learn fast, but man this is really giving me shit, especially the IDE and interface builder which I despise as a concept, rather just write code instead of dragging and dropping...3
