@desirous We are a bit estranged, he's very dissociative and a bit of a loner (I guess we'd call it autism these days). I've seen him about 3 times in the last 20 years, and he often disappears for a long time.
But yeah, I should probably help him give the site a little refresh. Although... HTML4 compatibility might just outlive him. -
@xewl That empty element is a reproducible Firefox inspector bug regarding marquees, on the page it renders fine. I could make a report, but I don't think they'll bother fixing it....

@Midnigh-shcode
Officially it didn't exist in HTML3. Netscape shoehorned blink into their browser, Microsoft barfed up marquee. Eventually they decided to adopt each other's ugly weird custom babies, which resulted in a slightly consistent HTML4 spec.
Both have been officially deprecated for 4 years now, although they've been hated by people for much longer. -
I AM very proud of him! It's very, very good.
If you have the opportunity, try to spend more time with him. Try to do the things that he likes, and teach him only what he would like to learn. Enjoy your moments. 😃 -
nightowl7086yIt's good to see an older person having an interest in tech - and making a good effort at it.
My dad used to be quite into technology, writing a little text based adventure game as a hobby etc. back in the late 80s/early 90s. I was introduced to computers through him.
It's a shame that he led a life of alcoholism and gambling as he's now in his 70s, basically unable to walk, is barely able to operate his laptop and seems to just click all his spam emails for scammy websites and attempt to search for porn phrases in the Windows Store.
He could've potentially done so much more but hey. -
Xaglom66yMeanwhile my 54 y/o dad struggles with his smartphone..lmao. but good work of your dad for sure!

Question, why a website and not other pursuit? What made your dad's decision to make a website? Curious...

So cool, good on him!! Maybe get him to publish some short stories online as well 😉

Nothing says old school like a marquee element. Brings back so many good memories!
My 80 year old very absent minded dad made a website, all by himself, using a two decades old book he got from the thrift store.
He's even hosting it himself on an old laptop running Debian, including a redirect to a beautiful nostalgic /~username/index.htm url (not gonna share the link, because his personal details are on there).
The whole site is incredibly carefully crafted, and I'm super proud of him.
Who cares if it's not a React app? The 14 kilobytes of HTML 4.0 markup load in 20-30ms, and it renders pretty much perfectly in every browser including Internet Explorer 4 and Edge.
🤷♂❤️
