Can we send private messages on devrant?

Comments

    We cannot. We have no secrets in this big happy family, we publicly discuss private matters.

    No.

    That's kinda a pain for any small scale site as then that's another channel to monitor for spam... and some of the less pleasant stuff that happens on social medial (stalking, harassing...).
  • 4
    Yes. Just create an account on discord and share your id with whomever you want to DM.
  • 15
    Yes. Just post your password.

    I declare this to be the private messages thread!

    Everyone just @ whomever you want to talk to.

    Everyone else if your name isn't in the @ ... ignore it please.

    do you wanna hit on someone? ask in public as in real life

    @N00bPancakes You’re still in for tonight’s gay gangbang? /private

    @electrineer I hear this highlight bot is smart enough to recognize passwords in messages and mask them up for others, while still visible for you. Saves you from accidentally exposing your passwords to the public!

    Here's an example:

    @highlight
    my facebook password is *************
  • 1
    The tag system works for this:

    private:@<username>

    Only the username will see it.

    @webapp I told you, you need to practice some basic hygiene before I ever do that again, and get that that... whatever it is looked at by a doctor, that ain't right.... /private

    @N00bPancakes I thought you said you liked it dirty? 😟 /private
  • 6
    Yes, you have to press Alt + F4.
    Oh wait, we're on mobile...

    "Let's use this thread for private messages!"

    *DevRant users immediately demonstrate why DevRant shouldn't have DMs.*

    @EmberQuill of course! @N00bPancakes gave the explanation in the beginning of this thread, and now we’re completing it with examples... 🀷‍♂️

    @EmberQuill @rutee07 already uses devrant for privates messaging.

    @Afrographics DM's would require a block or invite only system, plus it could take away from the core experience if that grew into a "group chat". This place works by being open, you can always @mention someone and start a conversation with them, like...

    @Jilano how's the day going?
    Or
    @AlecX04 what's new man?
    Or
    @F1973 how's that heat wave bro?
    Or
    @Root how goes your new acquisition, you about ready to open those doors?
    Or even
    @Rutee07 what's the pan for tonight, I'm feeling lonely πŸ˜”
  • 3
    @C0D4 We just barely signed the agreement! Closing is a month away, and that is barely enough time.

    @Rutee07 I’m still fighting to find enough time to fight with getting Minecraft working 😭

    @F1973 wake up

    @Afrographics This has been suggested many times. It might happen, but probably not.

    @digitaldina Are you back yet? πŸ™

    So. Despite all the sexual innuendo, house buying and so on.

    I'm slightly drunk and I did marvelous fish n chips and garlic dip.

    Might start singing: "Nimm mich jetzt auch wenn ich stinke...."
  • 1
    @IntrusionCM I just fought with children and talkative, annoying adults all day. 😑
  • 2
    @Root That's why I'm drunk. And that's why I made fish n chips.

    Far too many meetings, math and "Well ok, I'm gonna rewire the production systems during worktime...".

    Garlic is love. :)
  • 1
    @IntrusionCM Only if there’s enough that it’s fish/shrimp/chicken/etc. flavored garlic. πŸ’›

    > do you wanna hit on someone?

    > ask in public as in real life

    How is that going to work in practice ?

    A "Hey, wanna date B ?"

    B "A sure, lets meet at XYZ train station at 12pm"

    So, A, B and a dozen other folk turn up..

    How is A and B going to spot each other, unless they have shared a picture online..

    Or is each going to wear a red rose on their clothing..

    Maybe it will be like:

    > Sheldon meets the perfect girl for him

    @N00bPancakes

    I thought private messages was supposed to be private and not monitored by anyone ?

    Otherwise they would be called just "messaging". :-)

    I mean, it isn't like the phone company listens to everyone's phone calls in case someone says something wrong to someone else..

    They only do that with SMS messages in some countries. :-)
  • 0
    @Nanos monitored maybe not all, but dealing with inappropriate messages yes.
  • 1
    @Demolishun They want to see my privates?

    Seriously though, I've always hated the idea of private messaging on sites like this. I'm already annoyed when I post in a forum and someone responds to my post through a private message. If you can't say it in the forum, don't say it at all. Of course, you can always ask for their email address or whatever but at least there's the "asking" and someone agreeing that they want to connect with you that way. No random message pop-ups from random users.

    Also, if you want to make a point, you have to maintain conversations with several people unlike here, everyone sees what you said and they can join in if they want.
  • 1
    @Root I hope you find some time soon. The mods they added were pretty good. They have parasites! 🌺
  • 1
    @IntrusionCM I love fish and chips. GARLIC, oh boy. I add them to almost anything - fried rice, garlic butter shrimp, chilli garlic sauce, etc. ♥️
  • 0
    > dealing with inappropriate messages yes.

    So, an ignore, block command / option ?

    I'm reminded in some systems, people just create a new ID once blocked to continue sending messages to someone..

    I guess then you need both a (Tries to think of the PC term to use nowadays..) list for folk you let message you, and the other list... ?

    Some systems I've noticed the block list has a limit so when it gets too full, you have to delete some..

    And some systems, if the person you blocked is no longer on the system, you can't delete them from your list.. (The solution there is to create that person new, then delete them..)

    Without private messaging, how do you pass a phone number to someone without everyone else seeing it ?

    -------

    I'm already annoyed when I post in a forum and someone responds to my post through a private message.

    -------

    I just discovered earlier, my new pet hate. :-)

    Folk who message me a voice file, instead of a text message..

    How am I supposed to archive that, transcript every bloody voice file !

    After I've listened to it 8 times to figure out what words they was mumbling..

    I suppose I should be thankful it wasn't a video of them in the nude..
  • 0
    > everyone sees what you said and they

    > can join in if they want.

    Which can create another issue if someone is being annoying and you want to block seeing their messages.. (Even their name could be annoying!)
  • 0
    > No random message pop-ups from

    > random users.

    But isn't that one way you make new friends ?

    I mean, don't we all walk up to total strangers in shops and start talking to them..
  • 1
    > No random message pop-ups

    > from random users.

    What is the difference between a random message popup in PM, and a random message on a thread ?

    Isn't it the same data, but presented in different ways ?
  • 1
    @AkshayTolwani
  • 0
    @Nanos Yes, but when you walk up to a stranger in a shop, you are in a public setting. It becomes private when they actually allow you to message them like giving you their number. DMs skip that part. Most of my creep experiences are in DMs. People just say what they want because others don't see them and they face less consequences for being assholes.

    Imagine receiving a dick pic and the equivalent of that is walking up to someone in public and pulling your dick out. Then you have the angry trolls who just curse you out for no reason and dump their childhood baggage on to you. If you did that in public, the people around to witness it become aware that you're crazy.

    Also, DMs can kill forums since people just talk to whoever they like. They live in a bubble where no opinions conflicting theirs exist.

    Exchange PGP keys and send encrypted messages in rants
  • 1
    @C0D4 "Not gonna lie, I'm hurting in here!" :D

    I'm just wondering who added days to this already too long week. I'm suspecting @Root for now. She probably needed more time away from children tantrums and it backfired.

    @Jilano I am a fairy 🀷🏻‍β™€οΈπŸ§šπŸ»‍♀️. I’d suspect me, too.

    But can't you crack PGP keys these days..

    > They live in a bubble where no

    > opinions conflicting theirs exist.

    I thought all forums ended up like that eventually..
  • 0
    > People just say what they want because

    > others don't see them

    I thought that was what screenshots was for to embarrass folk in public..

    Backed up by whoever runs the forum to confirm, yes that is what was really said and no it isn't a fake..

    Seems a great loss of a feature to avoid the downsides.
