A group of computer science geeks were listening to a lecture about Java programming at a university.
After the lecture, one of the men leaned over and grabbed a woman's breast.
Woman: Hey! That's private OK ?
The man hesitated for a second looking confused.
Man: But I thought we were in the same class.3 -

The bad thing today: I killed my laptop with coffee.
The good thing today: it was my company laptop, not my private one.17 -
This is just fucking awesome.
Bought a domain name from a local registrar today and now my personal details like full name, phone number and exact address are nicely on whois.
The cunts didn't even thing to ask me during registration if I want to make it private and there's no option to do that on their piss poor website.
Oh well, tomorrow will be the day that I transfer my new domain away from them. Last time I ever do business with these shitcakes10 -
The problem with C++ is that all of your friends can see your private parts.
That's not a problem, it's a feature!9 -
!rant && sarcasm
For a long time now I've been trying to convince people to use secure communication. I'm used to getting called "paranoid", but the killer phrase always was (and still is): "Why do you want me to encrypt my communication, I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, so I don't care who's reading it" - "It's not about hiding something, it's about private stuff staying private" - "Yeah, whatever"
"I have nothing to hide". That always killed the conversation... until I asked them to hand me their phones, unlocked, for 5 minutes.
"No" - "Why? I thought, you had nothing to hide and don't care who's reading it?" - "Uhmmm..."
More and more people around me are popping up in my Signal contact list.
Looks like they suddenly care a lot about private stuff staying private </sarcasm>11 -

JavaScript classes don't need private fields. JavaScript doesn't even need classes.
STOP TRYING TO TURN JAVASCRIPT INTO JAVA.16 -
Me: here's the code.
Sr: allright, looks fairly ok. Just change all *FIELD* modifiers to protected rather than private.
Me: what? Why???
Sr: bcz that's the code style we've adopted.
Me: srsly? If so.. Where do you use private fields then?
Sr: nowhere. We use either protected or public so we could extend any class we want9 -
Sometimes I wish devRant had private messaging feature.
Then I see spammers and 12 year old script kiddies around here and I realize why we don't have it.1 -
I shared public IP of a server to a fellow software engineer. He has ssh login access to that server.
He needs private IP of the same server to run some script.
He is asking me for private IP. Did he really graduate in computer science ?
BTW, his development machine is a Linux machine.

GitLab vs GitHub
Which one do u choose?!
I personally prefer GitLab over GitHub. It's awesome and it's totally free for private repositories unlike GitHub's costly plans!25 -
Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3 -

In ESnext, private properties are marked with `#`.
Who thought that was a good idea? No really, who thought that was a good idea?
Why not just -- I don't know -- introduce keywords like ... let me think ... public, protected and private!?
Why this:
class MyClass {
a = 1; // .a is public
#b = 2; // .#b is private
static #c = 3;// .#c is private and static
incB() {
this.#b++;
}
}
If this becomes part of the language, no JavaScript developer may joke about php usage of `$` anymore.32 -

A dev posts a link to his website on a dev group I admin, first thing said site does is ask for my location. I look, no map not logically apparent reason for it, so I close the site.
Ask they guy why he is asking for such private info and he responds to tell me that he does not think a person's exact location is that private, and if he really wanted it he would just use the IP address.
Like how many fucking levels of dense is that.5 -

Holy shit it finally worked I finally got a private server up and running for an old game, after countless forum posts and broken links (note the form isn't that active anymore since 2010)
After finding a working server source you also need a client with the same version
Even though this was a pet project, it feels good to finally complete it. I might even try to build some custom stuff into it6 -

Now that github is also offering unlimited private repos to free users, I'm thinking of using it as a backup of my gitlab private repos.

My IT-teacher has a website. Aside from it looking like from 1980 (which is ok), he has a "security js Mail decryption":
In his page there is a <script> with a simple yet custom de/encrypt function. Then his E-Mail is an <a href="javascript:mailto:function('rubberish173848'>private email</a>. (Or something like that)
You can just run this link (open email app and read it) or use the same function and same href in the browser console and read it. It sounds so stupid.
(Yet I figured out he probably doesn't want bots to spam his mail, so maybe I am stupid)1 -

Google Cloud Services can't be used by private individuals in the EU because their billing system isn't customized for tax differences between companies and private individuals (it's the exact same tax, just named differently - and the doings for the service providers control drivers are different). Dear Microsoft, I see what you were going for, and I love you for it; but for the love of god, please fucking fix the clusterfuck that is Nuget.
I use a private feed for client work, and I have the public source registered too, so why would installing a new .core template from Nuget fail just because it tried the private feed first and shit itself?
It really shouldn’t be this hard.

private static final int TWO = 2;
What. The. Hell. Why?

Does anybody use Freelancer.com? I'm currently in an argument with their support chat minion about how private or not-private the project's contents are AFTER the project is awarded. She's telling me that both awarded and unawarded projects are completely exposed to the public Internet, sensitive file attachments, chats, everything, unless one upgrades to Private status. If one doesn't like that, she says, one can always delete one's project for only $5. Does anyone else have experience to share in this regard? I find this incredible.2

Jason Bourne logic: type "run predictive algorithm" without any parameters into a terminal and it returns the locations of whatever you want. Either that function is the _best_ at predicting user input, or its variables are so hardcoded that we've just discovered the hardest material on earth2

So typescript 4.5 beta is out .... holy moly what did those guys smoke? 🧐🤨🤪
They keep adding stuff on top, that nobody needs. But they don't fix the stuff that is broken (like emitting broken prefix-paths ...🤦)
Imho, they should focus on the overall development experience, make it easy an consistent to setup a proper multi-module project with linter, auto-formatter, folder structure, file naming.
And please fix this ugly #private fields - just ignore this mess of a spec and emit TS private fields as #private fields. That's the only logical way. Everything else is BS.8 -
Thoughts after a security conference.
The private sector, no matter the size, often plays a role (e.g. entry vector, DDoS load generating botnet, etc.) in massive, sometimes country-wide attacks. Shouldn't that make private businesses' CyberSec a matter of national security? Shouldn't the government create and enforce a security framework for private businesses to implement in their IT systems? IMO that'd also enforce standardised data security and force all the companies treat ITSec with at least minimal care (where "minimal" is set by the gov)
What are your thoughts?10 -
I'm pretty sure the talk about the dangers of AI is nonsense. Private Eye magazine was dead on with this:5

Things that I learned today (15-07-20):
Suppose you have a hosted zone (both private and public) i.e. y.test.com. in AWS r53. and you created r53 DNS record in the public host zone sample1.y.test.com and if you will try to reach this DNS from ec2 you will not be able to. it will give you an error that DNS does not exist but out of ec2, it will work.
To make it work, you have to create the same record in a private hosted zone. Then only you can connect from within an EC2 instance.
So apparently EC2 always looks for the DNS for your registered name server in private hosted zone.
There should be a fail-safe, if it's not in the private hosted zone, it should look in public as well. (idk)
Maybe it was silly of me to not knowing this in the first place. ( wasted good amount of time)4 -

In an already verbose, strongly types Java codebase and you see
private String m_strDisplayName;
private boolean m_bIsResolved;
...
I can understand the itch of another teams decided to rename it with correct Java convention. All nice and good, except that these changes were not merged back to master.
Five years, few re-orgs and product restructuring later, I'm staring at 500+ files merging mess trying to bring back these product codebase together.4 -
So, need to secure some requests.
I decided on going passwordless on the website but I want to have an API too.
I am reviewing auth0.
I am also not sure if I can secure the same endpoints as private and public differently, so the private is used by the backend with no auth and the public with auth.
Wold you guys help me with some reading material?2 -

I'm reading online that after I buy bitcoins from Coinbase, I should transfer it to a private wallet that is kept offline.
What would be a private wallet? Does that mean I have to download and keep the entire blockchain on my PC?
Also how would I transfer?
And best way to keep the private wallet secure? and not lose the key, password, etc?
And I guess main reason I ask was bc I saw this. Actually does this basically act like Coinbase? But they keep my wallet?

For a project I'm working on:
Does your work allow you to sign in to your personal accounts for i.e. Gmail or Facebook on your work device?
Do you think this should be allowed?
Do you do it yourself?
I imagine it's a gray area. I'm even thinking it could be a security risk? But maybe healthier too to keep business and private life separate? Thoughts?4 -

Is Apple alone who owns the rights to its systems? Or do users also own the system when they buy the iPhone? What I know is that users have a USER ONLY license, a non-private, limited and revocable license by Apple. And if what I think is true and that Apple owns its systems, then it is a private right for it, isn't that true?. So why are governments such as the governments of the European Union trying to impose laws on Apple and try to impose changes on Apple's systems even though the systems are private and not public or open source? Is this not considered an attack on private property? I don't know, I just want to get your opinion on the matter more..
What I know is that there are options other than Apple's own systems!!. Therefore, if you want to change, take Android instead of forcing Apple to change what Apple does not want to change.9 -
What service or setup do you guys recommend for a vpn? I’m thinking of setting one up to stream video from a streaming device. Just looking for some recommendations!5
