Linux434838yUsing Wordpress does not make you a webdeveloper.
Like refueling you car does not make you a mechanic -
Make a WordPress *type* site then. Don't use an inferior product just to appease the customer
-
I'm not a web dev but imo it's ok to use whatever fits you. WordPress isn't the end of the world
-
kunashe19688y@httpjordd well said old boy.
Eschewing WordPress or any other problem is a bit like saying "I'm going to solve that math problem but I'm going to ignore some of the variables while I do so". -
@linux so even though I can still create full customised web apps and websites with or with out Wordpress it doesn't make me a web dev? Where's the sense in that.
-
DataSecs9348y@Linux It actually makes him a web dev. According to wikipedia you are a web dev, as soon as you develop or create a website.
In my opinion you indeed are a web dev when you even just write some code or extend a WordPress theme, anything like that. Copying code and reuse it, is definitely not being a web dev. But using help of CMS or libs doesn't make you less a web dev. But rewriting code that is already written and offered in a maintaned way is just useful, at least in my opinion -

I do not aggree.
If he is not touching any code, that does not make him a developer - it makes him a designer. -
Koolstr27858yI use WordPress all the time. There's no reason it should be considered less valid than any other site framework like Bootstrap. Why the hell should I have to reinvent the wheel when the things I want my site to be capable of, already exist and are easy to put together? As long as I am still extending and customizing the site's backend and/or front end functionality with manually coded bits I am still a web developer. Any attempt at manually coding a site would just lead to an inferior, more buggy, less capable, less optimized, and less SEO friendly site.
No reason I need to go down that route and waste so much more time than is necessary. Instead I can now focus on what matters to the client, which is the site's content. -
DataSecs9348y@Linux I agree that Not touching code is web design. My intention was to say that even it's just some small task of coding one is being a web dev, in my opinion
-
What fucks me off is clients requesting the site be done in Wordpress. Turdpress. Blog off!
-
Linux434838y@Koolstr
The problem is, that if a problem occur (your site get's pwnd or some shit like that) you propably do not know how to fix it without using a backup.
As a sysadmin, the lack of "webdevelopers" not knowing the codebase is frustrating, and makes my job a pain sometimes. -
@linux if I wasn't using code I wouldn't be on this app, I thought that would of been evident, and if you had of checked my bio you would of seen the language I know and the fact that I'm a sysadmin as well so if shit went south with my site I ain't gonna be a fucking bumpy and not know what to do. The reason it pisses me off so much is because even the people who are fluent in web development(ie myself) still get flack for using Wordpress. Like how is it any different to using shit like Joomla, Drupal etc
-
Koolstr27858y@Linux why are backups a bad thing? Lol I can fix it by going deep into the code if I choose to, and I sometimes do.
So what do "real web devs" use to build their sites? What should I be using? -
In the Joomla CMS world, we use these terms:
Web Designer - able to create templates from designs, fluent in CSS & HTML, with some JavaScript. Frontend coder.
Web Developer - able to create custom extensions (components, modules & plugins) and customize existing ones. Fluent in MySQL & PHP plus JavaScript. Backend coder. Advanced web developer can do complex external API integration as well.
Web Integrator - able to utilize existing templates and extensions to create a "custom" website. Not a coder. What most "web designers" in the Joomla industry actually are.
These might not be the way clients understand these terms but they are pretty well accepted as the definitions inside the J community. -
philcr30548y@Linux also restoring a backup probably leaves the same vulnerability open once restored as you don't know the cause
-
philcr30548y@httpjordd I'm not getting involved in the Wordpress thing as it's heated enough already, however your argument about coding and using devRant is invalid. As I'm fairly sure there are many people who don't code that use devrant
-
Using Wordpress for anything other than a blog or a simple website, is like trying to use a broken blender as a jet engine.
-
@DebCinkus and if we're front end but make our own design not from templates? :p with a little back end
-
Arlekin8948yI don't do WordPress. I can do frontend, backend, both, but WordPress is beyond my abilities for some reason... I think i just lack some critical piece of information...
-
@ScribeOfGod - in Joomla the frontend is always controlled by a "template". They can be built from scratch or adapted from a commercially sold one, but Joomla site frontend is always a template. It doesn't imply pre-made off the shelf code in the context of Joomla, although certainly it can be.
-
I personally fucking hate it. The amount of trouble/wasted time it has caused me is too fucking high. But, for that matter, same with Joomla for me!

Why do people hate wordpress so much? It honestly fucks me off the amount of hate it gets and I honestly get a little triggered when people give me the "aww people who use Wordpress aren't real web devs" comment? Like fuck off i use Wordpress to make using a site more easy for my clients you daft cunt. 😩
