Friend of mine during workshops yesterday:
F: "Shit, my copying is broken (ctrl c shortcut)"
Me: "stack overflow down and/or broken copy/paste - worst nightmare"
F: "oh it works again... For a moment there i was afraid im gonna loose my job..."
* I guess the comedy of situation doesn't translate well to rant, but still, it was funny * -
People are whining about frontend bloat, overengineering, too many packages on npm and whatnot.
And I'm just like: "Hey! You still can write your own leftpads y'know..."
I just don't get why having lots of options has to be so bad... -
My gf (she is a dev too) gets mad at me, cause i ask for her help and it usually ends up as plain rubberducking...
Not my fault!10 -
I'm fed up with my work. I am the only dev so I have to manage everything, from negotiating integration protocols to design and implementation. The field is rather exotic and I don't have much room to grow and develop my skillset. I earn literally 1/4 of what my peers make in other companies doing more interesting things...
But then again my boss (the company is real small) helped me a lot during some difficult times and I don't want to pull the rug from under him. So I'm trying to get things organized and done as much as possible so as to leave everything good for my successor, but that's hard since im the only dev and i have to do everything...
Kinda vicious cycle...4 -
Am I the only one bothered by the way devRant ( and to be fair also Twitter) previews images?
It just kinda crops some unknown up front amount of edges. It's annoying in and of itself, but also directs viewer focus to some arbitrary part of the picture, and you can't unsee it even after opening the whole thing...
Is there really no better way to handle the issue of size? How can that be a good UX ??1 -
You pay a dev for 8 hours of work, he/she thinks about (ie. works on) the problem for 24...
Best deal ever :/2 -
I hardly run into weird bugs at work anymore, im scared that i might stopped progressing as a programmer.1

I used vim, Sublime and most recently vscode. I had Webstorm lying around for about 2 months now, and I'd really like to switch to it but it's constant fight, and not one im winning either... :(
Any advice from fellow "devs who rant" ?6 -
Trying to start working in Webstorm... And you have the audacity to whine that "vim has a steep learning curve" bitch please....1

!rant && feature_request
Could we have option for being notified when particular user posts something? There are people here that i'd like to "follow".
I imagine it would need some granular control there (for instance being notified about user rants but not necessarily comments).
Also it shouldn't be visible for anyone - meaning that you don't know if and how many people "follow" you just to prevent it from being twitter-like outlet and popularity contest.
Thoughts?

When im working more or less steadily and then stumble upon some issue which isn't entirely, prohibitively blocking but neither is an easy fix.
Then I'm just loosing myself in it... -
Anyone encountered issue with vanishing hdd space on Windows 7 ??
My father has this issue: amount of free and used space doesn't add up to the correct total. The problem slowly but steadily worsens.
I tried to help to the best of my systems knowledge but no cigar.
We checked sizes of everything with windirstat so we are somewhat sure that used space is calculated correctly.
We ran native disk cleaning, the trash is empty and pagefile is set to static size.
Honestly i ran out of ideas, last one is take a peek at the disk in something like gparted but i doubt I'll learn much.
I'm counting someone here will help me...
Google failed me, only devRant can save me now!14 -
Worst was so bad im ashamed of mentioning it here...
Best was switching from ubuntu to fedora i guess, at least that's the best i remember7 -
Anyone else has this feeling that every tutorial ever explains basic things in minutae details and then in parts that are actually unintuitive and hard it does not explain anything?
Case in point Angular 1.X
Now, i feel pretty confident with my ng knowledge, but it still looks like there is lack of balance to docs/tuts, it shows up in questions ppl ask on irc etc.
So I don't think it is a question of my subjective viewpoint.4 -
Python ecosystem drives me nuts!
Not the language tho, i kinda like it, and some features are damn straight awesome.
But ecosystem... man!
The way ppl write code in it, the lack of documentation (or in quality of it)...
I recently wanted to check how library does one thing (debug purposes), and not only i had to track some method up 3 classes, the other method i hunted only by signature and still i have no idea how it ends up being accessible where it should...
"Explicit is better than implicit" my ass...
Also dev managed to make the code very unreadable. In Python. Language with such strong opinions about code formatting. HOW ?!!
And the worst part is, it wasn't that big of a library and didn't really need the full freaking Enterprise OOP treatment with layers over layers of generally named classes and fucked up architecture.
FUCK THAT LIB, FUCK THAT DEV, FUCK IT ALL !!!
PS.
Project seems to be abandoned for a year or two, so there is hardly an option to fix things with the author sadly :(3 -
Game with AAA technological qualities but with gameplay and polish value and size of the games of old. Basically something even better than, say, Witcher 34
