Hey @dfox consider to migrate devrant to flutter? I can contribute this. As the appcelerator titanium is discontinued.

    They don't even have time/motivation to update the current clients.

    I think we should make our own. I can help.

    @WildOrangutan great. What's the devrant API?

    @WildOrangutan nice . I will start a repo as an open source and see who want to contribute to devrant.

    @WildOrangutan I will set up the codebase and get every assets ready.

    Because the current app is too buggy. I hope by open source this we can help this platform and make it better.

    But we need approval first from @dfox or any founder of this app.

    Some clients exist already, so it may be ok :) Maybe others can comment on that.

    Would be nice to get confirmation yeah, but I don't think we will get it.

    I think it should be fine as long as we don't try to challenge their client. Like publishing it next to their own on the app stores :)

    I guess copying is the ultimate form of flattery lol

    @dfox @trogus what's your take on this? The idea of community creating clients for your API.
  • 2
    I could be wrong regarding the username.

    My brain is bad at names. Very bad at names.

    I know of at least 2 clients.

    devRantron, dead since 2018

    And another It think Windows only? Not sure, but someone posted some updates every now and then

    @Omar sorry

    @OmerFlame wrote AltRant

    ... Did I mention that my brain is bad at names?

    I am planning to use flutter to develop once for Android, iOS , desktop client and it is easy to maintain.

    @C0D4 after this can I upload to my onlyfan

    I don't think tagging dfox and trogus will help. They don't seem to be alive anymore, at least not on this platform :) Someone should send an email.

    @johnmelodyme I'm feeling experimental. What if we tried using jetpack compose?
  • 0
    @WildOrangutan sure. What about iOS?
  • 0
    @WildOrangutan I really like jet compose but I chose flutter because we need one codebase for all platform iOS ,Android and with a clean codebase.

    First I thought react native or ionic but then flutter is much stable in some sense so...

    @johnmelodyme works for Android and desktop. Not sure how far iOS support is. But definitely possible.

    But just fyi, for serious multiplatform client, I think Flutter is a better bet.
  • 1
    @WildOrangutan we are damn lucky that windows and blackberry phone are discontinued. Otherwise..... We will...

    @WildOrangutan maybe we need first gather those who would like to contribute, and then we get the vote on what tech to use and when to start.

    !!!! Bear in mind, devRant TOS explicitly prohibits alternative devRant clients in app stores, both apple and google ones.

    @kiki oh sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
  • 2
    @johnmelodyme this is why devRant PWA client is the only good alternative I see. The amount of work required is comparable to that of your proposal.

    I would really be fine with devRant PWA client that allows to read rants, comments, answering, favourites, etc., but without avatar builder, as it's really complex. I can tolerate opening the official app to change my avatar.

    This kind of 80% solution might be the good way to provide a devRant experience without constant crashes and stuff, all that without the app being a massive work that is very hard to pull off without a budget.

    Also, if it's PWA, there is no need to pay for hosting.

    @kiki maybe I will just have webview the web client 😁😁😁😁😁

    It would be great to have a client on F-Droid, it doesn't really matter if it's on Google Play Store or not.

    @electrineer but the problem is "what about iOS?"
  • 5
    @johnmelodyme I consider iOS discontinued if it doesn't have an alternative app store for open source apps

    @electrineer I wish someone sponsor me to publish for iOS hahahaha

    I have tried Flutter in the past (before I expanded my knowledge and knew the stuff I know today), and I really didn't like it. Flutter has an insane amount of potential though, maybe I'll try writing something this week or whatever.

    Thanks for pinging me though! @Ranchonyx @IntrusionCM

    @OmerFlame count me in ... I'm actively program for flutter application since 25 dec2018

    @johnmelodyme you're like a prisoner, counting the days since your involuntary admission to death row.

    Personally I love the buggy app :(

    @dmonkey ...you like the crashes?
