My hubby saw me using Secure Shell to install some software on a cloud server I'm using through the terminal. After a few minutes of watching, he said, "Oh, the government better watch out for you!"

I've been unable to successfully convince him I'm not some elite super-hacker like he's used to seeing in movies and NCIS.

I have teens in my classroom who want elite hacker status but complain about doing programming exercises outside of class. >.<

I explain to them that learning to code takes a lot of practice and can be frustrating at first. Some still went to the dean complaining that my class is tough. I work at a private school where open communication is encouraged and social justice is a thing.

So, I'm over here like "How do I reach these kids?"

I'm optimistic and I try different approaches to teaching and learning. Some stuff has worked. A lot haven't.

I figure I'd ask here: Does anyone have a suggestion for any creative programming exercises/projects that are beginner-friendly, legal, and hacker-ish? (I teach intro to Java.)

noob misconception #527: during my first hackathon i didn't know what version control was (i thought github was this magical elite hacker tool), so id copy my code into a google doc every few minutes along with a timestamp 😫

1) where to download a lot of music (hardstyle)
2) how to do project management in vim?
3) how to tmux in multiscreen?
4) how to use github in cli well (ik how it works, but maybe there are some things that are good to knew)
5) is lynx REALLY my only option for browsing the web?

So I'm trying to get used to using vim and I've spent a couple of days setting up my vimrc and practising commands and what not.

Come today I'm doing my first proper coding session and my codes sending back weird errors and I can't work out why

Then when I read very carefully I find :w somewhere it's not supposed to be... Of course I'd forgetten to enter normal mode a ton of times and now my code is littered with :wq and :w so I spent a few minutes combing my code to find them all and it all works now.

Am I an elite hacker now?
