I realize I've ranted about this before, but...
Fuck APIs.
First the fact that external services can throw back 500 errors or timeouts when their maintainer did a drunk deploy (but you properly handled that using caching, workers, retry handlers, etc, right? RIGHT?)...
Then the fact that they all speak a variety of languages and dialects (Oh fuck why does that endpoint return a JSON object with int keys instead of a simple array... wait the params are separated with pipe characters? And the other endpoint uses SOAP? Fuck I need to write another wrapper class around the client...)
But the worst thing: It makes developers live in this happy imaginary universe where "malicious" is not a word.
"I found this cloud service which checks our code style" — hmm ok, they seem trustworthy. Hope they don't sell our code, but whatever.
"And look at this thing, it automatically makes database backups, just have to connect to it to DigitalOcean" — uhhh wait...
"And I just built this API client which sends these forms to be OCR processed" — Fuck... stop it... there are bank accounts numbers on those forms... Where's that API even located? What company?
* read their privacy policy *
"We can not guarantee the safety of your personal data, use at your own risk [...] we are located in Russia".
I fucking hate these millennial devs who literally fail to get their head out of the cloud.
Somehow they think it's easier to write all these NodeJS handlers and layers around some API, which probably just calls ImageMagick + Tesseract on the other side.
If I wasn't so fucking exhausted, I'd chop of their heads... but they're like hydra, you seal one privacy breach and another is waiting to be merged, these kids just keep spewing their crap into easy packages, they keep deploying shitty heroku apps... ugh.

I'll admit - I come from a WordPress background of almost 9 years in the making. I guess I can justify it because of all of the sites I created using it, it was the best that it could be on WP. Fast, efficient, custom - none of that off-the-shelf themeforest crap. I created everything custom. I actually knew what was going on behind the scenes of WP.
And then a buddy of mine and I had an idea for a new company/software project. I was smart enough to know that WP was not the foundation for this, so I did some NodeJS/Express tutorials. Started learning React, and really getting into the Javascript world.
And now I'm wondering WHY IN THE ABSOLUTE FUCK I ever bothered trying to become an expert in WP. It's the largest use of PHP in the fucking world and it doesn't even have native composer support. And by the time you actually get your project set up using composer you have to add a fucking mirror of the wordpress.org plugin repo to get anything to work. It's 2018 and you'd think that WP and composer would have all of this shit figured out by now.
And don't get me started on git - as soon as you have more than 1 person working on a WP site, I hope you have hourly backups of your DB because someones work will get overwritten. So you all either need to work on the same staging area of work around each other by pushing/pulling the DB and schedule your workflows.
I guess WP CLI and the REST API are a step in the right direction, but the foundation of everything is just so fucked up.
I don't feel like I've wasted my web dev career, but I definitely wish I had started down this path a lot earlier. I guess you don't know what you don't know. Thanks for reading!2 -
PSA MacOS Sierra 10.12 will make any user who wasn't the original admin user a standard user, it will also reset the original admin users password back to whatever it was when the MacBook was first set up. It all just works!

My story is about a digital disaster. I thought I had $950,000 worth of Bitcoin stored securely on a hard drive. I was confident in my setup—until one day, the hard drive crashed unexpectedly. Suddenly, I found myself locked out of my own money because I had lost access to my private keys. I did have backups, but they were encrypted, and for the life of me, I couldn’t remember the password I had chosen to protect them. It felt like I was staring at a vault filled with cash but had no key to get inside, I spent countless hours searching for recovery tools online, trying everything I could find, but nothing worked. I felt more hopeless with each failed attempt. It was a terrifying experience to think I might lose everything I had worked for all those years. Just when I thought all hope was gone, I came across Digital Web Recovery while browsing online forums. At first, I was unsure if they could truly help me, but desperation pushed me to give them a shot, From the moment I reached out to them, their team was incredibly responsive and professional. They took the time to understand my situation and reassured me that they had handled similar cases before. This was the first time I felt a glimmer of hope since the hard drive crash. They explained their process for decrypting backups and gave me confidence that they could help, Over the next week, Digital Web Recovery worked diligently on my case. They kept me updated throughout the entire process, which eased my anxiety. When I received the message that they had successfully recovered my private keys, I could hardly believe it. The moment I logged into my wallet and saw my Bitcoin balance again was a feeling I’ll never forget. It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I had come so close to losing everything, but Digital Web Recovery saved the day If you ever find yourself in a similar bind, I highly recommend reaching out to Digital Web Recovery. These guys are the real deal. They know what they’re doing and truly care about helping their clients.
