Did a very tiny migration for a client which would normally be done against our hourly rate but decided to do it for free as it would take me like 5 minutes and it was a very important thing for him and he actually offered to pay.
Fuck it, he'll be very happy, it doesn't take me much time and I know my boss would approve.
Did the migration, messaged the client and he thanked me.
Next day a cake arrives at work with my name on it and "thanks for helping us with the migration!"
Now that's how you make my fucking day!19 -
Got me some free swag. Thanks @dfox & @trogus! Might I suggest:
500++ stress ball
1000++ mouse mat
2000++ t-shirt
4000++ sexual favours
8000++ replacement soul11 -
Thanks, I am happy to be sharing my payment details with your company.
ATTACHED TO THE LOGIN DETAILS YOU EMAILED ME!3 -
Got bought these by our CEO today as a way of him saying thank you. Means a lot to get such recognition from someone you look up to.12
-
Not a rant, just awesomeness:
At my company our CTO organizes a meeting every month that gives us devs a chance to present new technologies to each other, offer advice about workflows and give feedback about current situations. This allows us to constantly improve.
Thanks boss!3 -
Big thanks to the guy who blamed the poor structure of a legacy database on me today because I'm young. You made my day4
-
The hour before i downloaded devRant i was a 9gager. Now i think i am devRanter.
Thanks dfox and trogus and all awesome people in this community. I am a fresh meat in dev world and here i learn so much things about real world i cant learn in anywhere. Cheers if you are reading.15 -
Hey everyone - apologies for the downtime earlier today. Our host is having a lot of issues and we're working to keep everything up through it.
On that note- there might be a little more down time tonight as they are trying to fix something and we might need a few server restarts. I will keep everyone updated and thanks for bearing with us!16 -

Dear DevRant Users,
Thank you for being such an amazing group. You make me feel less shitty, more confident, and generally happier. You help me fight off the looming depression, keep me motivated, and help keep me focused on the of being the best programmer I can. Thank you.6 -
Just wanted to say a 'thank you' to all people who bear with my privacy stuffs! I know quite some people who installed messaging apps, signed up to privacy services and so on, solely because --> I <-- want to communicate in private and I realise (I've always realized that though) that that can be tough sometimes.
Also a thank you to those people for not requiring me to get data fed into the big companies :).
Thanks!24 -
Since I discovered devRant, looks like I stopped using instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
I love this community so much!!
It even has functions facebook and instagram doesn’t have!
Thank you @dfox and all the others! Hope it continues like this!
Thanks devrant!6 -
This is to dfox and trogus. I think that a lot of devRanters are very happy with the support option! Although i hate Google pretty much i made a very unlikely exception for you because i would love to support the social network where i, next to being able to rant and be among fellow devs, met quite some very nice devs with whom i still am in touch with through slack and some encrypted channels. Thanks for this awesome place and I'm proud to be a supporter 😃7

Saturday plan: serious switch to Linux.
1. Installs Fedora, lookin nice.
2. Let's update it, fails to boot.
3. Nouveau driver fails, lets install proprietary one.
4. dnf install dependencies, repo returns 503
5. Be stuck on a 640x480 bash.
6. Boot windows, start overwatch.15 -
PM: I spoke with x client, they really like x feature and want to continue.
Me: great, I'll let the team know.
PM: Yeah, I told your team already.
Me: Oh. What did they say?
PM: They all told me to tell you first, so you can tell them.
Me: 😏2 -
Thanks to @dfox @trogus for asking users for a pittance to offset server costs rather than inundating the app with ads that make it unusable.
This has been a longtime suggestion of mine for other apps and social media sites. People will pay a premium (even if it’s only $2) for quality; just ask Apple.10 -
devRant has rose astronomically to become my favorite bathroom browsing material. Thanks for making poops that much better, everyone!6
-
I love you. I live devRant.
All I need sometimes is scrolling through your stuff, and I feel better.
Be safe, girls and guys. Be healthy, and stay here. #OneBigFamily ❤️9 -
Creating an anonymous analytics system for the security blog and privacy site together with @plusgut!
It's fun to see a very simple API come alive with querying some data :D.
Big thanks to @plusgut for doing the frontend/graphs side on this one!20 -
So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!2 -
A special thanks to @dfox for the awesome swag that showed up today.
My daughter claimed the stress bar for her own.7 -
Thanks to all the sys admins and devs keeping the internet up and running through the holidays. It's a crazy time of year and I'm sure it only means more work for a lot of you at an already stressful time. So thanks again for being the glue holding it all together; we really appreciate your work 🍻
-
Programming has really taught me the art of anger suppression. You just can't be a coder and ill-tempered at the same time5
-
So guys and gurls...
I'm a member of devRant for about 1.5 weeks now. I already have over 130 likes on my rants in total about things I was never able to post without being labeled a nerd. I literally love you guys! Thanks to @dfox and @trogus for making it possible for us to discuss things that matter for us!6 -
I'd been constantly working on another prototype for the past 63 hours straight without sleeping and this was the best thing I could've asked for to make my day.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for the lovely stickers! -
Today is my devRant cake day! 🎂
Thanks everyone for making this community so great! This year on devRant has been so enlightening!1 -
Microsoft admits they were hacked. Explains how it worked and what happened. No big deal. companies get hacked. That's life.
Indirectly admits that all of their customer support agents have access to your inbox.
Cool. Deleting my Outlook email. Thanks guys.9 -
Thanks to DevRant, you have saved hundreds of monitors from getting smashed, keyboards from getting torn into pieces and mouses being flung across the rooms! There is a platform for rants now!3
-
100% honesty
I feel as if my friends from school are dropping me one by one and it's boiling down to my IT friends. I really like my friends and stuff but they're treating me like I'm invisible so I'm not posting this on instagram, not on twitter, and I'm not texting this to anyone, because I'm really starting to realize how big of an impact the life of IT studies has on me, and how amazing the community is. Thank each and every one of you for simply being here on devRant and I appreciate all of you.12 -
Sorry for breaking the protocol, but I'm not here to rant. I want to thanks all the ranters (is that a thing now?) for recommending Mr. Robot (the TV series). Just watched the first episode and I can see myself watching it all day. Be back tomorrow.6
-
Well, devRant has turned me from a bigot arse into quite the humble and decent person, and on top of that, introduced me to some new series (well more so the users than the platform, but you know what I mean).
Binge watched Silicon Valley (season one, I just started) and learnt about dick to floor ratio.
Prior to that binge watched Mr Robot. Cannot remember who suggested that, so I cannot attribute the appropriate gratitude to the appropriate person here.
Add to that that I no longer claim one language to be holy amongst others. Yeah. I was that dick before, we all have a bad side. I'm just admitting it.
I sat down and started utilising other languages, and even found quite a few that did what I wanted more efficiently. Plus I have gotten to meet some sharp people and broaden my own mind.
Fuck I hate my job, but I see a fucking brilliant future for myself thanks to coding and the open mind that I have attained. I attribute this to devRant (perhaps it was lying dormant, but you guys awoke it.).
Enough chitty chat, I'm off to sleep and then code my balls off.2 -
!rant Finally arrived.
And just in time for my birthday tomorrow. Thanks dfox and trogus for this amazing community. And for the swag! 🎉😀6 -
At work the other day...
Guy: "Oh hey I was thinking if you could help me with an application to visualize some data."
Me: "Ooookay...what did you have in mind?"
Guy: "I think we have XML files that could be turned into graphs...oh and we could add some trend lines. (Getting more excited) And maybe we could supplement it with live data...oh hey and maybe we could add real time alerts via email..."
Me: *thinks to self...there is no way in hell I am starting to work on something that he is literally coming up with requirements as he's talking* "I need specifics...so go take some time, think it through and get back to me with concrete details and examples."
Guy: "Ok. That should be enough to get you started for now at least."
That would be a big fuck no, good sir. Haven't started and won't start it. He has never mentioned it to me again since then.4 -
This community is amazing. I started developing an app from scratch, with no knowledge of how to do it but this community has helped me so much. I have just started it, been a few days but devRant is what got me into coding in the first place. I was more of a hands-on electronics/mechanical engineering kinda guy but this has been amazing and I might just switch to computer science branch for my engineering. Thanks devRant and the community :)8
-
!Rant, I just received some stickers through the post, I just want to say, I have been so impressed by this whole community, what a great group you all are..3

I get kicked out of my fucking house because my house”mates” just pissed off without paying rent or finding someone to replace them in time.
Great.. really fucking awesome.
There’s nothing else available in my town and I have time till the end of the month.
Thanks for that asshole.
Never, ever sharing a house / apartment again.
I’m better off doing my own thing.
Fucking lonely as I’m used to be but at least there’s no one to stab me in the back.1 -

Thank you, senior developer!
Thanks for offering to help me when I said haven’t slept at all tonight.
Thanks for having a pair programming session with me when I said I would have trouble finishing todays tasks that the customer was expecting.
Thanks for being understanding and explaining, instead of just staying quiet and do everything yourself, when I couldn’t understand even simple solutions with my sluggish brain.
Thanks for making sure I understood what tasks needed to be done and how to do them before you resumed to your own.
Thanks for caring, and telling me I did good work even though I wasn’t my sharpest today!4 -
Not an actual teacher but definitely the guy who thought me the most: @java9
@java9 is a friend of mine who started the apprenticeship with me, but had serval years more of experience than I did.
At first he helped me get through the first complex tasks.
Luckily we are in the same class at professional school, and he helped me studying a lot.
Because of him I was able to develop my skills rather quickly.
Over the years our relationship developed into a close friendship.
Now we are working together as a team on more than side project and I've learned to love his perfectionism when it comes to code.
It's a pleasure to work with you @java9
Thanks for reading fellow ranter, here is a picture of us sharing a beer as a bonus2 -

Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2 -
!rant
I've been lurking here for quite some time now. Decided to create my account today.
I'd love to share a good rant but the last couple of days were the most calm I ever had. Thanks to you guys giving me hope and strength and see others feel the same.
Thanks for the good posts and funny comments.4 -
Finally I've got my stickers, thank you guys!!! Made my day *.*
(I told my classmates to join... ;) )3 -
Which open source documentation tool would you prefer among these:
https://docusaurus.io
https://docsify.js.org
http://daux.io
I'm leaning towards docusaurus.io. Any thoughts?4 -
This might seem insignificant, but I just hit 2000 ++'s!
Thanks everyone!
I think it shows how the community here appreciates each other, it's great 👍7 -
Why I love this community : I posted this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1084912/...
And by once @Root wrote a comment about lmgtfy, I was looking for that since more than a month didn’t remember name and by once I got it without asking!
Thank you @Root and this fucking awesome community.
Hope to spend happy coming years with y’all!17 -
Hey guys,
I think the topic of this week is very important.
Older, experienced devs are giving their skills and advices to the younger one.
Some of you maybe know it, I'm a young developer, who started his apprenticeship at september.
I'm feeling good there, the others are friendly. I learn a Lot there. I had experience before I started there. It's my Hobby to code so I started coding when I was 14.
You can't know anything, everyone makes mistakes, this is what I've learned and this is important to remember.
There are these days like today, when your Boss isn't there and you have to work alone. You have to do many things, and you are desperated because nothing Works, you can't ask anyone, you are completly alone. There are these days, when nothing seems to work. But there are also these days when everything Just Works fine and you are happy with yourself.
This is important to remember.
For me its very hard. Days like today are driving me crazy and I'm very sad, even when I know, that this is Kind of normal not to know everything and have Problems, especially when you are young as me and started your first apprenticeship 3 months ago.
Tomorrow I'm also alone, I'm a Little Bit feared of tomorrow (you say that in that Way? :P) When I think of tomorrow and that I don't know How to proceed and sitting there, I'm getting frustrated and Kind of sad. But I know that this will Make you even better some day, because you learn and gets better - day for day.
At least there was something good today. My stickers finally arrived! To Germany! That was fast! Thanks everyone, Thanks! And Thank you @dfox for building this great community!
What are you advices? And how you handle these situations? I hope tomorrow everything Works fine :/2 -
We got it! Only took just over a week. Thanks!
Best pic I could get before the little monster started eating it.2 -
Just reached my 512th ++.
Thank you everyone who did it, and special thanks and congratz to @devTea for being the 512th.

@dfox and @trogus I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of the stickers I got back in October. They have been enduring near daily use from taking my laptop in and out of my backpack to dealing with my sweaty palms on the keyboard deck. No discoloration at all.
Appreciate you guys and this platform you are cultivating! Thanks again.11 -
So after 7years of sound engineering, I started working as an intern in a startup company which does "anything" for money.
( Sending me to a seminar for taking photos of our customers is also in the list. )
Yesterday, I managed to grasp the basics of node and web sockets to build a simple chat app in order to satisfy boss' needs for a small website. He wanted to add it as a feature and assigned it to me as a task but it turns out nobody has any idea about putting it online. Seems like I still have lot to do.
Thing is, this is my 3rd month and I already started making no sense to anyone when I try to exchange information about coding/programming and latest technologies which we should encountered long ago. I am happy to experience and learn different things but I am feeling really alone.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for boosting me with amazing real life experiences and supporting my career changing decision even without knowing.
Have fun ranting!1 -
Was running low on ssd space, so I decided to have a thorough look at what was occupying all of it. First I found out that I had about 5 gigs (!) of leftovers from microsoft sql server which I unfortunately had to use once (thanks microsoft for your shit uninstallers). Then I found I still had a .gradle folder (uninstalled a while ago, maven ftw) with another 5 gigs of cache. That should give me some room to breathe.4
-
Ya know what I hate? People who always find an excuse to let people know about their problems or if they are vegan.
Every time I'm like, THANKS! DIDN'T ASK!4 -
Man....I keep up with this strange love hate relationship I have with Python....
Last night it was python that literally wrote my homework: define all possible equivalent partition tables with cause and effect analysis and boundary value checks for a program. The whole thing wrote itself and all I had to do was verify the inputs. Something that I was able to do using jupyter with pandas and numpy. On one hand, I despise the lack of static typing and use of whitespace as a block delimiter. On the other I cannot but help feeling a high level of gratitude over the language and its high availability and ease of use for this.
Sure, I could have used other tools, but this language has dominated hardcore in this regard enough to the point of not considering it being a crime against humanity.3 -
So after someone mentioned Haskell in a post, I googled it and started some kind of tutorial.
It's fun!4 -
hey everyone.
guess what - it’s my anniversary of first joining devRant. I joined exactly 0x16d days ago, and it’s been great.
ive learnt so much, made more stuff, and y’all are great.
id like to follow up on my resolutions from last year ( https://devrant.com/rants/364344/... ), and im proud to say i did everything except the 3d game (i was looking opengl and got distracted by opencl).
when i first saw devRant, i was on a plane, coming home. i saw a news article and decided to check it out, and when i joined i quickly realized i was the second youngest on the platform. one year, 316 rants, 2181 comments, and a score of 18594++ later, here i am.
thanks for this wonderful platform!20 -
Just received my sticker and I am glad of being a part of the DevRant community. Thanks for you for being the best community I've ever seen 😊8

also how many times would you recommend i hash passwords?
and should i look into hardware acceleration?14 -
This February, I posted a !rant here ( https://devrant.com/rants/1999689/... ) about getting a NLP internship with the help of the community.
In the past few months, I have gone up, and now I have a job offer from a small organisation (StrataVAR) as their Python dev.
I received the offer letter today. Since I am in the third year of graduation, then want me to work parallel to the university classes, they pay way above Indian freshers' average, and they have put me in a team that works on things I like.
It would not have been this way without the help and support of the communities I'm a part of, such as DevRant and StackOverflow (obviously). I just wanted to thank all who cared and helped. It means a lot.8 -
Just love the customizability of phpstorm. I can work as minimal i need !
PS . I use also sublime, vim and atom based on what i need, but phpstorm is my main tool :D1 -
Marty Stepp(Stanford) lectures are amazing, going thru his lecture videos on YouTube.
Thanks Marty, God bless you sir!1 -
They will be the first stickers on my laptop. Thanks devRant for hours of fun in this great community!
-
I finally found something to rant about! So what happened is that I am participating in the Digital Ocean competition (I need to do 5PR's). So I find a report with a lot of scripts. I decide to contribute and write a discord webhook API (send messages through a webhook). The next day, the guy goes "No thanks :)" and closes the PR. Words cannot express how triggered I am. I ask him if I can make anything else out of exasperation (I did not intend to do anything for him anymore, I can't explain why I did that), he tells me no...
;(3 -
I would like to thank everyone for their interest in my last two rants (that two with my CVs).
From what I saw, that rants were in the most popular, for which I thank you all!
As I promised, I will soon release the templates of that CVs
Anyway, thank you all! -
They say it will take you 300 years to download the internet. You probably can't do that but you can get pretty close. Just hit Rebuild on Android.
-
Happy birthday to the best community for developers. Thanks for all the laughs, friends and good times you have brought us all.
-
thanks to everyone for all the upvotes so far through the years! it's been a wild, and mostly depressing, ride.
i put the parrot on my shoulder now because it's the closest thing i could find to a 🤡 mask (which I already requested!!!!)
also updated some clothes, trinkets, pets, table, and monitor 😎 probably gonna leave my avatar like this for a while now
cheers

Got 'em stickers woohoo! All the way from Philippines. Letter got wet in the rain but the stickers are in good condition. Thanks devRant!4

i was around 8, i saw my dad coding with VB3, I was fascinated. He taught a bit and showed me his project : A complete and very feature-heavy radar simulator, with lots of graphical elements and planez flying by. I was dumb struck. he even gave me a little project to do : A calculator. Thank you dad
-
Love the new classifications of posts! Its gonna be easier for everyone now! Thanks @dfox and @trogus. Its an awesome community.
-
Recieved my free stickers and paid for them on the same day!! 😁😁
If only there was an option to toggle the show-offy badge...1 -
Thanks thanks thanks devrant to not add theses useless story bubble shit in your apps like every other one7
-
So instead of hiring someone qualified they took someone from an irrelevant department and are making me teach him while doing all my own work -_-
-
Working on a project, got stuck, thought to call it a night but nooo. Fucking brain decided to come up with a solution 0.0000001 ms right after I shut my eyes. Now I am way too tired to open my laptop back again and I am forced to use Facebook Graph API on my cellphone. FML

Some gratitude.
I know I've come on here in the past emotionally wound up from work / project stress but I feel like some gratitude is in place.
I work with a lot of really cool people, my company is fair and my boss treats me really well. I got a bonus range increase and I've been there just four months. Boss even arranged to cover my moving expenses in September. Learning how to cope with office life has probably been my biggest challenge.
Thanks everyone that reached out in the past you guys really gave me some good perspective and other things to consider! -
Have grown wierdly fond of devRant in a very short time.
Reading about devs around the world getting as frustrated and magnetically fucked as me, gives me some sort of sadistic calmness.1 -
Just received my stickers and stress ball! A big thanks to the devRant Team. Keep up the awesome work!
-
Rant = false;
Thanks devRant for making me laugh and I honestly enjoy the discussions, the rants and the community as a whole!
Looking forward to continuing using this app and being part of this community! -
Just came home to cook supper at 11am again before I go back to the office to pull an all nighter to implement last minute changes thanks to a hosting provider in south africa getting hacked last Friday.
I love being a dev but this is one of those moments I really think to myself "your the moron that chose to do this for your career you twit" 😑6 -
Lunchtime mail delivery brought me some decorative goodies! devRant looks right at home on my XPS 13 with the EFF, Tux, and company! Thanks for the stickers and this wonderfully witty community.3
-
Thanks devRant for stickers, they're awesome, but I want to give a special thank to my brother, who opened mail, stickers left me on desk and rest threw away, so I don't know what was inside. 🤷♀️😂1

The devRant update is so great. So many of us love devRant and it keeps getting better and better. Thanks guys!

Finally!! The rust team fixed the environment setup thingies for Windows. Finally! I can run rust without needing to do all those bullshits like downloading things manually and installing thingies.
Thanks rust team. Good job5 -
New one for me. I got an email out of the blue from someone asking me if I was interested in their open position. Sorry bro I’m diggin my job and not looking to change 😎

Wow just wanted to give a big shout out to this community I never posted here before and all I got was support and how to get better! Y'all rock!

what a sweet fantasy
>admit weakness and knowledge gaps, get punished for it
thanks world, universe, society, etc -
Can anyone recommend a tool I can use to allow my users to crop / position their profile images before they are submitted to s3?
I’m building in laravel but I’m guessing the best solution will be some JS library.
I’m really struggling with this.
