Not sure if happy or sad

A nice side effect of running a neural network on my home server is that I no longer need a white noise machine

I tend to go hide in the IT closet. It's dark and the only noise is the fans on the server rack. Very relaxing and no one has figured out that's where I disappeared to.

... Yet

I once had a client that lived near by and I had setup a server in his office. One day he calls me begging for help because it keeps turning off... He put it in a sealed foam box to try to reduce it's noise. Temps were 80+ Celsius (176f) within 5 minutes of it booting.

Not really a dev rant, more of a "home tech support" kind of rant but I guess a lot of devs will relate...

So I was looking at building myself a little storage server, mostly for backups and stuff. This led to the fail of this rant: I thought it would be a good idea to convince my father to switch from using a ton of USB HDDs to get himself a NAS.

This is where I didn't think things through...

The only place he was able to set up the NAS is in the living room. Now I have to use my noise cancelling headphones all day just to not have to hear those HDDs rumbling around in there🤦

(also, I specifically got some super quiet fans for my gaming PC in the living room, but now I realize I could have saved some money and gotten some louder ones, since that NAS is so much louder...)

Please tell me there's an alternative to speedfan than lets me set up a custom curve for fan speeds. At the minute it's either constant server level noise. Or adjusting speeds manually every time i want to do something that requires high CPU load and putting them back to acceptable idle noise levels afterwards
