Sadly to say, but devrant is slowly moving away from dev part of its name, even rant part.
More I see posts about this tech sucks vs that tech sucks. That being annoying, would be fine, not for me, but fine.
The worse part are the memes. Repost memes, not funny, though, maybe funny to some, still no effort reposts.
Even worse are posts that have nothing to do with dev. Like recent post about soldiers and gay people (maybe you saw it). Why the hell post it here?
Going down are the ++ beggers, sadly I see even more of them.
Yes I understand I can just leave this platform.
I just wanted to express these mixed feelings I have been getting for my once favorite place to read about other devs experience.16 -
I think I got a problem... The standing desk extension I bought is 40kg.... But after carrying it up... Even with a pull cart and elevator... It feels too fcking heavy for my desktop... I have a feeling it's going to crack it in 2....
Any tips/ideas? Feels like I need to put a metal safe under it, in the middle now... To make sure it doesn't collapse too much...18 -
I got my first own office... We did it. We just painted our mini Iranian office in two nights and we about to code it,has 5 min distance to our college and it's a golden opportunity to work and study at the same time.8

If git was written in english or in ancient greek it made no difference. It's everything counter-intuitive and you have just to learn commands by heart and google the errors. Because nothing makes sense, even if you know how it works and you used it for years6

Wait... You mean to tell me that other programming languages that aren't python exist?!?!
Fucking blasphemy!!!11 -
Your mental stability closely matches that of Microsoft Windows. Especially that side when it gets this blue coloured screen with a sad emoticon.
As for your credibility and trustworthiness, I'd say you're at Facebook/Google/Microsoft level.15 -
Random guy : Well I'm not tracked on the internet, I use private tabs.
Me : Well, I'm not sleeping with your mom, I use condoms10 -
After months and months of unrealistic deadlines, pulling late night shifts coupled with an insane commute and two very small children at home I had a total burnout. Turned up to work one morning, and stared at the Java code I had been writing for the past couple of days and it might as well have been written in Martian. The more I stared, and the more I tried to keep things together internally the less I was able to make sense of anything - just a random jumble of characters on screen that were as intelligible as the green scrolling lines from The Matrix.
My office manager saw that I was obviously in some distress and took me into a meeting room to have a quick chat - and there I was, a grown man of 35 bawling my eyes out like a two year old. Not the most edifying moment of my life.
However, the company couldn't have been more supportive afterwards; one of my colleagues drove the 100 miles to get me home in my car and took a train back up to the office; my GP signed me off work for six months and treated me for severe depression; the office instituted stricter working policies - not on the developers, but the sales/PM teams that were handing down ridiculous timescales simply so they could get a sale.
For my part, I've learnt to push back and say "NO!" - work is not your life, it's an important part of your life, but my no means everything. Don't feel beholden to a company to meet unrealistic targets that you haven't agreed to. Talk.3 -
More than half of all support calls and tickets we get are so fucking easily searchable through our own fucking website and search engines, it's really fucking annoying sometimes.
"how do I redirect a site?"
Type the fucking word redirect into our helpdesk page.
"how can i reset my email password?"
Literally fucking type the word EMAIL into fucking search bar?!
"hey the article said to go to yourdomain.com/webmail, I'm not getting anything!!!"
"what domain did you use?"
"yourdomain.com of course!"
😥🔫
"how can I add a domain to my hosting?"
Search for the FUCKING word DOMAIN on our online helpdesk.
IT'S REALLY NOT THAT HARD, PLEASE APPLY COMMON SENSE AND USE YOUR FUCKING BRAIN.17 -
What music do you devs listen to while coding?
I listen to Jazz, lo-fi, and other slow, melodic instrumentals with minimal/no vocals7
