so guys, how do you say SQL? "sequel" or "es-kyu-el"?

Just like the language usage itself, it depends.

I just say SQL ?

this is how I see it, you have two choices:

1) go with the one everyone uses, sequel
2) try to be a smarty pants or troll and nitpick on the fact that it's more correct to say sql, es-kyu-el, even when practically no one does that

the same for saying gif with a jay

Actually I have not met one person in Germany that says Sequel. Everyone said it like es-ku-el (Changed it to German pronunciation)

I agree that we Germans are a weird bunch of people...

I've only met a few people who say "sequel" -- and many of them were nontechnical. In my experience, saying "SQL" is significantly more common here in the States.

It's weird. In my native language I pronounce it like the english sequel, but in english I say es kyu el.

I think if you're using MS stack, sequel is more common, as SQL server is easy to say as "sequel server," where if your using postgresql or MySQL it'd make more sense to say the letters.

The former is not how 'S' is pronounced in english. And 'sequel' was a patented name for an aviation company by the time sql was introduced to the world.

Es-kju-el, I think its related to language groups, never heard slavic people calling it sequel

I only say it in my native language, so I say each letter ( S-Q-L)

In Brazil I have only heard as reading the letters (ésse-quê-éle in the local pronunciation). I have heard before that some people abroad used to say sequel, but I have never heard someone say it.

In my country, if you are trying to be posh, use sequel, if you are normal programmer we say es-kyu-el

In my experience, it's S - Q - L in the programming world, and sequel in the business world. Since I work with sysads and other business people, I pronounce it sequel mostly.

I think jesustricks has it right, except he accidentally swapped the options.

Either you go with the option everyone uses (case in point: this thread) and say es-kyu-el or you try to be a smarty pants and/or want to sound super kewl by saying sequel.

In my native langusge everybody is using S-Q-L. The only time i use "sequel" is when english speaking people look confused at me after saying S-Q-L.

@myss true that, i'm also slavic but recently i keep on hearing young programmers pronounce it "sequel", so i question myself if i've been pronouncing it wrong whole time
