Training the beast!
Hopefully I will submit my paper soon, and then I can share a video of the beast in action :)

    @ScriptCoded Yes, but I think it's been out of production for a few years. We ordered the Dingo from Clearpath as a replacement for this veteran.

    @mr-user No Kinect in this setup. For now the task I'm dealing with is localization in dynamic environments :)

    @mr-user My work is targeting indoor environments. Changes that are hard to handle are more of the quasi-static type - big piles of boxes that move around in warehouses, or rearrangement of furniture, that basically create a great discrepancy between the observation and the pre-built map. Fast dynamics are easier to detect and filter - but big stuff that can suddenly move and then stay in the same place for days and months require a different approach.

    Nice, autonomous indoor navigation with depth perception, lidar, deep learning and mecanum wheels.

    @NickyBones next iteration could have a shock sensing skirt (like a Roomba) or something fancy like a ground-facing LIDAR. All to avoid small, ground-coloured objects that could get in the way unseen and make things bad.

    Real story: we were testing these newfangled warehouse shuffling units (think roombas that sneak under and then lift and carry around pallets that look like metal cupboards, like in an Amazon warehouse). But those were first-gen, only-for-veeeery-clean-places dev kits. They were made to carry around plastic-wrapped industrialized products.
    We had low-value crap that was waiting transportation in the warehouse.

    And then a potato - a regular, light-brown-skinned potato - fell from one of the cupboards into the floor. Our light-gray, dusty and rough concrete floor.
    The robots couldn't see it. One of them hits the potato an STUMBLES. It falls down and dominoes the four other units behind it. We lost a couple pallets full of produce that night...

    @NickyBones what OS are you running?

    We also use a realsense camera for a realtime projection setup (AR if you like), c# with windows. But I'm suspecting some of our performance problems are related to it..

    @NickyBones our company uses lidar for that, iirc led based. But I'm assuming you considered it?

    @jkommeren I'm also using a 2D LiDAR, but when you have a scene with a pretty repetitive structure (rooms of the exact same size and lots of symmetries), LiDAR-based localization struggles. Add to this the presence of dynamics and yeah...

    Uh oh.
    Google had taken offline the robo wars series and alike after some AI research.
    They're taking sides with the future winners in evolution.
    Talking of robot's feelings.

    As much as I loved the machinery, programming and tension in such experiments, in a few decades it will be history as 'AIs dark age' and 'robo genocide' , thus I fully understand and embrace taking those materials offline.

    @scor I wouldn't refer to the abuse of technology by governments as AI. You don't need AI to track every fart your citizens make and oppress them.

    If you are referring to a new form of sentience that is digital, I really doubt it would find humans interesting enough to exterminate/enslave them. The fact that something so powerful would even bother with us, is a very human-centric and vain thought.
