*18 year old me VS computer lab teacher*
So, have you decided on a project?
Uh, I'm gonna draw some sprites and make them kill each other
That's not a good project
You said we could pick anything we wanted?
Yeah.
Well, that's what I want to work on.
I don't like it... how about a webpage?
Hmmm, how about no?
You'll fail this class
Fine by me.
ARRRHHGHGHGHHG!! JUST DECIDE ON A PROJECT AND GET TO WORK!
*a month later*
And so, have you decided on a project?
Oh yes, I hacked this together over the last couple weeks.
WHAT IS THAT?!
Oh, that's a templar. He commits mass genocide in the name of God.
I TOLD YOU to work on a project!
A-há, you said I could work on anything I wanted.
Yes, but not this.
What's wrong with it? It's just a game.
I don't like it, pick something else.
Wait. You want me to CHOOSE what I want to work on or you're going to pick the project for me?
You're SUPPOSED to pick your own project!
Well, you already had me do silly cutesy webpages for two years in a row. How about I do something a little bit more metal this time around?
I swear to God, you'll fail this class
Alright, alright.
*next week*
And so? Have you decided yet?
Yes! I added some archers and walls yesterday, look at the arrows fly!
...
Miss?
YOU'LL FAIL THIS CLASS IF YOU KEEP IT UP
Keep what up? Programming?
NO, WASTING MY TIME
Fine. What do YOU want me to do?
Anything you want... just decide on a project already!
But I did... I want to work on this...
That's NOT a good project
Then I can't work on what I want
Yes you can. Just pick another project!
Mmm... something 3D with Unity, maybe?
No
How about a rogue clone?
NO
WELL, then I CANT work on what I want. You say I can, but you don't like ANY of the projects I pick. *i was kinda crying here*
You CAN work on whatever you want, just MAKE A WEBPAGE!
*and next week*
Please tell me you've started an ACTUAL project already...
YES
Can I see it?
NO
You're still writing that stupid game, aren't you?
... YES
*sighs* alright, have it your way. But remove the blood spurts, please.
YES, OF COURSE. THANK YOU MISS.
*did NOT remove the blood spurts*
*totally FAILED that class*
*dropped highschool altogether*
Me today, unemployed: WORTH IT.21 -
Oh boy, prepare for the shenanigans of the professors I had in College and some instructors I had in my previous jobs.
Professor in networking subject picks a different student each day to lead the prayer before the start of his class. "Angel of jod, my garden deer.."
Professor in electronics is kind of a pervert and there's always that one too-old-for-College student with huge tits beside him even though she has no subject with him.
Professor in programming language X (I forgot) talks trash about her students. One of my classmates overheard her call me cocky for having a thesis that is a little more ambitious than another point-of-sale system (something that so many students have been doing that time).
Menopausal professor in whatever programming -related subject I forgot about would blow up and dumb down her students for no reason. One time was precious. She asked a dumbass question on what "scope and limitation" means. I answered her. She was annoyed and said it was wrong then explained it in the exact words I did. The class went silent and she became a joke.
Delusional instructor from the hellhole company talked about their dev team as if they're so elite and that I should be thankful to be given a chance to become a dev since my first experience was in support back then. A few months in, I was the one teaching her super elite team how to do shit because their "development" is nothing but drag-and-drop, bind this and that, and some small Python scripts.
Before that and when I just started with them, she made me the instructor for the new batch of trainees. Mind you, the system is new to me so I thought, "Okay, I guess she wants to assess or challenge me this way." She presented herself as my mentor but when I have questions about the requirements, she'd get annoyed. One time, I sent her my presentation and you can hear her keyboard clacking hard and I receive a furious message about how I did things wrong. I was like, "Huh?" A few minutes later, she says "My bad, it was correct."
I swear, the amount of people I had to work with that has this stupid nonsense tantrums decreased my tolerance for such human emotional garbage that shouldn't be present at school, in the workplace, or any non-personal setting especially with instructors. These days, one minor attitude problem and I'm already writing a draft to the HR, browsing new jobs, and keeping my distance.
So yeah, my definition of terrible is misplaced high emotional garbage. Someone who doesn't know much could be good enough, bad, or incompetent but certainly not my definition of terrible.6 -
Professor in Programming 1 & 2, 54 years old, divorced, has two kids in our age, golf player
Every time, he came in, we started with the lecture, than he started to talk about politics, greta, the stupid young people, specially the women, always the women. While he was talking to himself or asking us students very personal questions to judge us and recommend how we should do it better, he was talking himself into rage. We never learned something about cs or java longer than 10 minutes, the other long hours he only talked and talked about personal stuff or politics.
One day he asked us about the method of training a dog. You train a dog with pushing his face into his own pee. Than he said with us it is more difficult and that if he would be allwoed he would use methods like this and other very effective stuff on us.
He always starts his emails with
Dear humans
To make fun about gendering.
Another day a student came 1 minute to late, the prof stopped talking became very angry, first he went to a armchair and was sitting there for 15 minutes without saying a word, than he left without a word the room for 30 minutes and when he came back we had to listen to one of his monologues for some hours like usually.
And these are only some samples, he always acted like a little kid, but our university is very poor and i dont think they can effort a better professor for this.8 -
Inspired by the comment I posted on another rant.
My uni decided to be one of those progressive tech schools that start people with Python. Mind you, I had prepared myself with studying as much as I could with math and programming by automating things and similar stuff in our computer when I was at my previous job, so I had a better idea as to what i could expect.
Introduction to computer science and programming with Python or some shit like that was the name of the class, and the instructor was a fat short ugly woman with a horrible attitude AND a phd in math, not comp sci and barely any industrial knowledge of the field.
She gave us the "a lot of you will fail" speech, which to me is code for "I suck and have no clue what I am doing"
One assignment involved, as per the requirements the use of switch cases. Now, unless someo knew came about, Python does not have swio cases. Me and a couple of less newbie like students tried to point out that switch cases were non existent and that her switch case example was in Javascript, not python, curly braces and everything. She told us to make it work.
We thought that she meant using a function with a dictionary and we pass the key and shit, a simple way of emulating the switch case.
NOPE she took points and insisted that she meant the example. We continuously pointed out that her example was in JS and that at the time Python did not have switch cases. The nasty woman laughed out and said that she didn't expect anyone to finish the assignment with full points.
Out of 100 points everyone got a 70. No problem. Wrote a detailed letter to the dean. Dean replied and talked to her (copied her in the email because fuck you bitch) and my grade was pulled up to full mark.
Every other class I had with her she did not question me. Which was only another class on some other shit I can't remember.
Teachers are what make or break a degree program. What make or break the experience, going to college is putting too much faith on people. If you ask me, trade certification, rigorous training is the future of computer science, or any field really. Rather than spending 4+ years studying a whoooole lotta shit for someone to focus on one field and never leave it.22 -
Oh I have a good one.
A dev once was added to the team -he deleted all of the whitespace from the backend code (minified) and called that optimising. We had a lot of back and forth and me reverting the things back to non minified and him back to minified on live environement. I shit you not i had to endure that shit and he kept on insisting that I'm the shitty developer because I don't know how to optimise. I'm starting to rage even thinking about it....13 -
University, first year. I went to my Java/OOP teacher's office to about the course (I had started programming C++ ~5 years ago).
I wanted to discuss the fact that some parts of the course seemed too theoretical for beginners in my opinion. Rookie mistake : do not criticize the cursus of an academic if you are in your first year, even when you are right. I learned it the hard way...
The teacher started to tell me that I was just a first-year student, I had no experience yada yada...
To that I replied "I'm doing C++ for 5 years. This is OOP so yeah I do know a little more than you think".
I will never forget his reply "LOL C++ is not Object-Oriented !"
I never went to his course after that. I learned a few years later that the teacher was a well-known a**hole along his peers and got fired by the University...41 -
One of my theoretical CS teachers always complains and makes it sound like everything around him is an annoyance to his existence
- being late or in a bad mood? His pregnant wife is very tiring (good ol' haha women are hormonal much?)
- having to create and correct exercises for us (students) is a nuisance because it's so much work and we're not supposed to be spoon-fed (which makes the whole learning experience very demotivating)
- every explanation start is continued by at least 3 changes in the explanation itself, which makes everything super-confusing
- all his helpers are incompetent and not rising up to his expectations
Someone needs some self-reflection2 -
I've actually had mostly good instructors for CS. Or at least mediocre. The worst teacher I had was actually my Algebra II teacher in high school. She taught by reading, word for word, from our textbook. She would copy the example problems from that chapter onto the whiteboard. And then give us the rest of class to work on homework. She was basically a Text-to-Speech program for our textbook.
We all joked that she was drunk and the one locked cabinet in her classroom contained liquor. A year after I had her class she was fired. For drinking on the job. The joke turned out to be 100% true and they actually did find alcohol in the locked cabinet. -
Uni, programming 1.. professor had worst ppt presentation..I think it was about java..5? /* yeah, I'm old */
He was droning off in the most monotone voice..reading off the ppt, about types and blah blah blah..
Took us about 15mins to figure out he stopped teaching and was 'yelling' with the same monotone voice at one of my classmates to take their laptops and go play need for speed in the lobby..
I was sure I'd flunk the class and will never be able to complete the course, let alone get a job as a dev..he made programming look like the most boring thing on earth.. -
My junior high school computer programming (Visual Basic) teacher.
She was the spoiled brat of our head teacher. Had just graduated and gotten her bachelor degree. Didn't know jack shit about programming or teaching. Would constantly mock and belittle us for not being able to answer the questions and didn't actually teach us anything.4 -
There was this woman who would write code on the board at lightspeed which the students were supposed to copy to notebook and then type in TurboC then run it before the class end. I had to do this for a semester and my brain crashes every time i am reminded of that. And no one in the class was interested or cared enough to complain. She was a nice woman but a terrible instructor.
Oh, and there was a guy who taught a theory class and all he did was read some notes which we were supposed to write down and memorize for exams. He scored the paper based on how close the answers were compared to his notes.
Now i got a headache and have to take the day off. thanks and bye2 -
Our cv teacher at school basically just printed out selfhtml.org on paper and told us to start writing websites. He then went on to chill on his chair for the rest of the lesson.3

First year of college. We had to write a program in assembly to let lights go on and off slowly but I couldn't get it to work and googled the shit out of it trying to get it to work to no avail. So I go to the teacher as I expected him to have a bit more documentation/knowledge on how the shit worked. He literally said oh let me google that for you. Which made me go 🤦♂️. In the end I never figured out how to get the lights on or off but luckily my team mates did a good enough job to get us passed in the class.4

Took a software engineering class at my university. The class was online which is common at my school.
The entirety of the class ends up being the prof. scrolling through a google doc while sharing her screen. No watching her program stuff, no opportunities for us to program in class, nothing. Basically like reading documentation for 3 hours.
The final project? A fucking command line tic tac toe game written in python.
My group asked if we could do a tic tac toe multiplayer web app instead and she denied us with no reason
Complete waste of time1 -
We hired someone to make the new front site because I was too busy.
The guy had a plain text password system to show, mispronounced "FontAwesome", and used WordPress.
He was not an instructor but was supposed to be the "senior option" for when I couldn't do something for any reason.
I later asked him for some opinion on how to translate the site, and he disabled the Captcha plugin. I. Don't. Know. Why. I figured because of all the spam I got suspiciously after he "took a look" at the admin panel.
Luckily I could get him out of the contacts and now we are looking for more devs.
