DAMN frontend can be a FUCKING pain in the ass!
I JUST WANT TO GET A SIMPLE BOOTSTRAP PAGE WORKING, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FROM A BACKENDER? 😭30 -
Hello! A tiny update on the privacy site thingy. (linuxxx here yas).
I've finished the preview page (description of what will be on the site really) and slowly preparing for deployment.
In the mean time, since @ewpratten is very busy at the moment, I'm giving the frontend part a shot myself! Working on the general layout/presentation right now and I will show a preview as soon as I have anything solid enough to show :).
Also working on the custom CMS which is going well!
I am kind of hestitant to publish the preview page because I am not a frontender and I know that I'll get all criticism on here so please, please go easy on me! Also, just in general, if you find any kind of flaws in the web app or wherever, please report them to me! As for frontend, I won't fix anything because I've got bigger priorities (like creating the actual site itself xD) but general feedback would be appreciated :). And as I said, I'm a backender so don't judge me too hard on the frontend!
Alright now let's gather some courage to actually publish this thing 😅57 -

a second former colleague (which works as backend dev) was seeking frontender, and remembered about the React frontender we both worked with.
I decided to warn him:
> *Giggles* According to his words, front is not like back. Git and testing aren't required there.
I received next replies:
> actually I don't need tests as well
> I did not write them all this time
> I have testers in a team for that, which do the testing for me
> I think I'll need it in cv though.
My comments:
I am trying to imagine their code... architecture, and I am a bit scarried to see how it looks like, are you?3 -
Frontend developer mainly, getting all excited by C#, net core, apis, http, databases. A new world of trinkets and hard-edged engineering. Makes me eyes glitter.
But my day job needs me to become as proficient as possible on the frontend of the stack. As we warm up to a huge application rewrite, with me as the sole frontender, it becomes clearer and clearer that, if I am not only to survive, but leave a codebase behind me that is clean, thoughtful, well modularised and built with maintenance and performance in mind, that I must let go. I have to focus.
I feel a little sad today. Somehow, right now, the frontend world does not feel as exciting. Javascript feels loose, unpredictable...my work open as well to everyone with every flavour of opinion. Because it is observable.
But I am mortal. Time is precious, and limited. I feel I need a dose of curiosity discipline and that, if I can do so, I can devote myself not to my coming and going whims of interest, but the real hard work of learning craftsmanship once that feeling of glitter has faded.
My brothers and sisters, steady my hand.
