After a long time just reading your posts, here's my first post:

Just for clarification: I'm studying electrical engineering in Germany. During your time at university, you have to work half a year as a intern to get some practical experience. So I'm in a position where I mainly have to say "yes" to work that is given to me. Also I'm working with a lot of PLC programmers, so I'm nearly the only one who programs non-PLC stuff at the department.

But now it's time for my rant (and also my most satisfying optimization ever). In the job interview for the internship, my task at the company was described as C# programmer. I only programmed C and Python before, but C# looked interesting and so I learned C# from ground up in the summer before the internship. I quite liked it and I was really happy on my first day of work. Then I was greeted with this message: "I know you are hired as C# programmer, but could you please look into this VBA program, it takes 55 seconds until it finishes its task and that's to slow". So I (midly angry because I had to do VBA and not C#) started the program and it was really horribly slow (it just created a table with certain contents from a very big imported symbol file). I then opened up the source code and immideately saw bad code. The guy who wrote it basically just clicked on the macro recording button and used the recorded mouse clicks in the source code. The code was like: Click on cell A1 -> copy cell A1 -> move to sheet XY -> click on cell A2 -> paste copied stuff and so on... I never 'programmed' in VBA before, so I used my knowledge of 'real' programming languages to do this task. After using some arrays and for-loops, which did not iterate over all the 1.000.000 unused cells after the last used one, the program took only 3 seconds after it finished the new table! Everybody was quite impressed, which led to much more VBA optimization... That was clearly not my goal haha :)

I am sitting at Starbucks trying to focus and finish some posts for my side project. The lady at the next table has been loudly 😁talking about her Disney trip in excruciating detail. Do we really have to know she will store her bagel and tuna fish in the hotel room fridge - really!

30 minutes in and she is just getting to the hotel - yikes 😫

No other seats open. I am trapped. Project deliverable delay - reason loud lady.

So my boss told me they will be interviewing applicants and he wants me to come with.

Reading posts here on devRant has enlightened me on what NOT to ask on interviews.

But what questions should i ask then?? Any tips for me? First time sitting on the other end of the table.

My first rant for ages

I'm working on a new project at a new company. We ha e a bunch of front end clients talking to an api.

I suggested that the api only communicate in terms of view models in order to bring some kind of standardisation to the project since at the time the gets and posts were either dB entities, view models, or just whatever the dev at the time decided.

I got a no, but that we could do posts and gets just with database entities. OK better than nothing..

I'm the front end angular app I implemented a generic form component and a generic data table component. The models given to these to build the components need to implement a view model interface.

Now we have a problem of the api giving us not view models and the front end needing view models so I put together a way to handle this in the front end.

My colleague with 8 years experience asks for my help and I'm happy to oblige. It turns out a model should have multiple child models in the database but the database entity models don't reflect this and therefore there is no way to build the view models. The data just isn't there from the api... Still I show him what the front end model should look like and write all the front end code for him to handle that.

2 days later he asks for my help again. It's exactly the same problem. Instead of fixing the backend and setting up the one to many relationship he has ignore the problem, retrieved a one to one relationship model and is just trying to force it to work - even though the data isn't there. He has also commented or removed all the code I helped him write and overwritten a file of typescript models that get autogenerated for us to be in sync with the backend...

I actually felt bad afterwards but I got frustrated as hell and he could tell...

i need advice, is this a good database structure? this is a comments table with foreign keys to users and posts table. the post_id and user_id can be repeated a lot of times so i wondered if i missed something here. i kinda forgot the 1/2/3 normalized form rules, so can someone give me a quick refresh? is this current structure good or should i change it?

What is the efficient way of querying database and fetch paginated posts AND also checking if the user viewing that post has liked it?

Just like on instagram or twitter, you can just like/unlike post.

Entities:
- user
- post
- user_post_like

Ive implemented fetching posts for 1 user profile and also liking unliking each post. Thats fine

But now how do i know which post has been liked by which user?

One way i can think of is:
1. Query paginated posts (e.g. 10)
2. Loop through each post and query in user_post_like table to check if this post has been liked and if it is then set flag liked to true. That way on the frontend i can easily set liked or unliked post via ui

But this means I'd have to query database 10 times all the time, aside from querying 10 paginated posts. This doesnt seem efficient... Or am i wrong? Is this normal?

How would you model this?
