Thanks to @dfox @trogus for asking users for a pittance to offset server costs rather than inundating the app with ads that make it unusable.
This has been a longtime suggestion of mine for other apps and social media sites. People will pay a premium (even if it’s only $2) for quality; just ask Apple.10 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3

This is a proposal for an entirely free and open source rant like site/app.
devrant today has a couple of problems that I hate:
* Posts in the wrong categories (usually by new users)
* Low effort posts in the "recent" feed
* Good posts in the "algo" feed that are too old
* Longtime bugs
* No official code format in comments, ffs.
* Unimplemented features (like inability to search posts in android, or inability to mute posts in web desktop)
* Lack of admin involvement with the community
but it also has some aspects that I like a lot:
* Admins aren't trigger happy to suspend/ban you
* The avatars are awesome and help to associate users to faces
* The ++ system is good enough
* The community isn't too big so you know pretty much everyone
* There's a lot of variety in the roles and techonologies used by users
* Experienced ranters are usually smart
* Super simple UI
* The comments have only one level (as opposed to reddit comment trees)
This project should try to reimplement the good things while fixing the bad things.
I wrote two posts about a possible manifesto, and an implementation proposal and plan.

I think the ideas outlined there are very aligned to concerns of privacy and freedom users here vouch for.
This project is not meant to **purposefully** replace/kill/make users abandon devrant. People can continue using devrant as much as they want.
I'm hosting a discourse site on a 5$ linode machine to discuss these things. I don't know if it's better than just github.
If you feel that you would like to just use github issues, let me know. I'll create a github org tomorrow, and probably setup gitter for more dynamic discussion.21 -
Longtime reader, first time ranter!
I'm just here to complain about how everyone at my company sets "latest" for every dependency.
This wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, expect that no one fucking manages their version numbers...everything is still 1.0.X where X is the build number. Even if there have been breaking changes. Even if it's been like 5 years since the repo was created... -
Start mongo, start my node server, start the app, quick "5mins" look on dev rant started 30mins ago!1

I wonder if this latest devRant update that includes Rant Types truly is going to be the end of one of our longtime staple identifiers: !rant2

What's up guys! Welcome to your first android tutorial for The New Boston, my name is Travis (aka Bucky). If you're watching this video and you don't know what a "Boolean" is... You're an idiot!
Inspiring? This dude!5 -
Yesterday a longtime friend asked me if I finally become a programmer.
Is it really being a programmer looking for solutions on stackoverflow?1 -
Yo been a longtime.
So I basically quit my last job to have successfully reached the top company in my country only to find they are such a mess.
No code quality whatsoever, testing? Yiu crazy? And all the old people who think they are senior whilst they do not know jack..
I do distribured web applications, but shit I hate titles and I think of myself as a software guy, I can do software that opens the fridge when I close the toilet lid ffs!
So, I am looking to deviate my career from web to something more deep such as distributed systems and services where I can use all of my skills and expand my knowledge more, and be able to code in js, c++ golang and more, handle and tackle infrastructure issues, virtualization etc...
So I want to ask you guys what would be an interesting project I can work on to concretize my skill and be able to convince my next recruiter that I walk the talk.
Thank you everyone7 -
I have a longtime friend who is looking for input about the broken candidate process and how to fix.5

On January 2, 2024, I was contacted by a broker who convinced me to invest in a platform called CryptoGlobaltrade. After discussing the opportunity with them, I decided to make an initial investment of €190,000. Shortly after, I was told that in order to access my withdrawal, I would need to deposit an additional €14,500. Trusting their advice, I followed through with the second deposit. Unfortunately, after making this payment, I was unable to access my funds. For two months, I made numerous attempts to contact CryptoGlobaltrade, but received no response. It became increasingly clear that I had been scammed. As I started to lose hope, I spoke to a longtime high school friend who had gone through a similar situation. She explained how she had managed to recover her lost funds with the help of a certified wealth recovery team. After hearing her story and learning about her positive experience, I decided to reach out to them for help. I discovered that the recovery team she recommended was called TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY. After doing some research and reading reviews from others who had successfully recovered their funds with their assistance, I felt confident that they could help me too. I contacted TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY in November 2024, after an extensive search for a trustworthy recovery team. My friend had specifically recommended them, knowing that they had handled her case efficiently and professionally. I was impressed with how quickly TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY took action. Within just three days of reaching out to them, they successfully recovered 100% of my lost investment. They kept me informed every step of the way and made sure that I understood the process. The recovery team only charged a 10% fee on the amount they recovered, which I was more than happy to pay given the outstanding results they delivered. Looking back, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY through my friend’s recommendation. They provided me with the support and expertise I needed during a difficult time. If you find yourself in a similar situation and have lost money to a scam, I highly recommend reaching out to (EMAIL T.e.c.h.c.y.b.e.r.s.f.o.r.c.e.r.e.c.o.v.ery @ cyber services . com) OR TELEGRAM ID +.1.5.6.1.7.2.6.3.6.9.7 . They are professional, efficient, and most importantly, trustworthy. Their services helped me recover my funds, and I am so happy.4
