Last week I was erasing a 2Gb USB thumb while copying some really important shit to my backup disk. I look at the terminal and see it's taking a lot of time to did zeroes on dev/sdb.
Then I realized that dev/sdb is the backups drive and I just erased the firsts sectors of my only fucking backup.
It's ok, I said, let's see what can TestDisk do for me. And it only could find an empty sad partition that had useless shit on it. Whdd couldn't even find the drive. Cat and dd vomited 160Gb of nothing to a file that couldn't be read. I was lost, because I failed doing something I'm really good at. And I did it because I was to stupid to check fstab...
It's the very first time I couldn't recover data, so I'm thinking about delete "Data recovery" from my resume skills and put "Data cleaning. Really effective. I can send you 160Gb of pure horse shit to prove it" instead.2 -
Follow-up to my last rant... The HDD is still not booting. I'm afraid it really is fucked up. (The screenshot is TestDisk doing a Deeper Search, and showing a shitload of Invalid FAT Boot Sectors)2

>Client: Hey, I lost my Facebook password but it's saved on my old laptop
>Me: ...alright, i'll look
>Laptop: won't boot - "No bootable devices found!"
hoo boy
>opens 'er up to pull drive
this is really heavy for an SSD, Corsair, and especially for only 64GB
>plugs into other PC
nothing
fuck me
>sees jumper pins
>jumps them
>BAREFOOT-ROM RECOVERYMODE SSD DEVICE - 128GB
that's twice the size of the disk, wtf?
but ok, i'll take it, any data?

>WinXP: *doesn't see it, TestDisk doesn't run because Kernel32.DLL issue*
>Linux: *Issues the instant SSD plugged in, they stop instant removed*
fuck it

>stick holding important data goes bad ("Insert DVD" IT'S A FUCKING FLASH DRIVE)
>no backups as it's a flash drive so my PC never did an auto-backup despite being configured to do so
>might be recoverable
>"short pins 2 and 3 while running tool to reconfigure NAND and controller then recover data from quick format with TestDisk"
*looks at drive*
Well.
Fuck.

The moment when you accidentally delete the final product instead of the experimental one because they have the same prefix and the shell's completion choose the final product when you type the name.
That happened to me today. I accidentally deleted a postfix calculator that I wrote in Scala instead of the sbt one (Which does nothing) because both of them have the same prefix (nimtha is the program's directory name, and nimtha-sbt is the sbt one). I don't notice that until I go back to the project directory and don't see the program's directory. I tried to recover it with TestDisk, but it can't. All because of fish's shell completion, and also because of me.
At least that was a pretty small project so I don't feel very bad.4 -
I open Photoshop, I open an image, I start editing colors. I think to myself "I need to change units to pixels instead of inches". I open the "Preferences - Units" menu. I approach the mouse and click on the selection box for units.... My screens go crazy suddenly and I get a BSOD...
The computer reboots, refuses to repair, complains it can't write on the disk. I launch UBCD, start TestDisk, it tells me my MFT and the mirror MFT are both completely messed up and the partition contents as well... Wow wow... What the...?!
Complete reinstall.
Thank you Intel GFX system driver.
