The university system is fucked.
I've been working in this industry for a few years now, but have been self taught for much longer. I'm only just starting college and I'm already angry.
What does a college degree really mean anymore? From some of the posts I've seen on devRant, it certainly doesn't ensure professional conduct, work ethic, or quality (shout out to the brave souls who deal with the lack of these daily). Companies should hire based on talent, not on a degree. Universities should focus more on real world applications or at least offer such programs for students interested in entering the workforce rather than research positions. A sizable chunk of universities' income (in the U.S. at least) comes from research and corporate sponsorships, and educating students is secondary to that. Nowadays education is treated as a business instead of a tool to create value in the world. That's what I signed up for, anyway - gaining the knowledge to create value in the world. And yet I along with many others feel so restricted, so bogged down with requirements, fees, shitty professors, and shitty university resources. There is so much knowledge out there that can be put to instant practical use - I am constantly shocked at the things left out of my college curriculum (lack of automated tests, version control, inadequate or inaccurate coverage of design patterns and philosophies) - things that are ABSOLUTELY essential to be successful in this career path.
It's wonderful that we eventually find the resources we need, or the motivation to develop essential skills, but it's sad that so many students in university lack proper direction through no fault of their own.
Fuck you, universities, for being so inflexible and consistently failing to serve your basic purpose - one of if not the most important purpose on this earth.
Fuck you, corporations, for hiring and paying based on degree. Fuck you, management, for being so ignorant about the industry you work in.
Fuck you, clients, who treat intelligent people like dirt, make unreasonable demands, pull some really shady shit, and perpetuate a damaging stereotype.
And fuck you to the developer who wrote my company's antipattern-filled, stringy-as-all hell codebase without comments. Just. Fuck you.17 -
First Rant here.
So I was working on some integration test issues when I found this by accident made by a professional level SW engineer:
@Test
public void testMethod() throws ApiException {
Response res = null;
try {
res = serviceToTest.callMethod();
} catch(Exception e) {
assertNull(res);
}
}
Was wondering why tests were being green after some code changes I've made cuz tests could have not been green afterwards.
Together with a senior (I'm also professional only) I've tried to explain him for a good 1-2hrs why this code is useless and he still did it. Good thing there are no errors in the real implementation from him after fixing the tests as it's code freeze here and we are having go live in a few days 🙃
Also luckily he isn't working on our code anymore and has only been doing so for a few weeks.
Wasted a day with it and gonna check all of his code now before I run in the next surprise.1 -
My matryoshka keeping me company, because of course when you are alone testing a last hour deployment. shit will happen

Unpopular opinion: unit tests are often overrated.
Although a well written test suite is almost essential in some parts of the application (I.E. business logic) I cringe when I see hundreds or thousands of line which “mocks” everything to test a micro service which just does CRUD operations on a database, in cases like that unit tests are just a waste of time because almost every operation involves a mock which may not behave like the real database and often needs to be rewritten when the code undergoes a huge refactoring. In these case a integration test suite is faster to write and way more helpful.9 -
Overengineering. Finding the right point between overdesign and no design at all. That's where fancy languages and unusual patterns being hit by real world problems, and you need to deal with all that utter mess you created being architecture astronaut. Isn't that funny how you realize that another fancy tool is fundamentally incompatible with the task you need to solve, and you realize it after a month of writing workarounds and hacks.
But on the other hand, duct tape slacking becomes a mess even quicker.
Not being able to promote projects. You may code the shit out of side project and still get zero response, absolutely no impact. That's why your side projects often becomes abandoned.
Oversleeping. You thought tomorrow was productive day, but you wake up oversleeped, your head aches, your mind is not clear and you be like "fuck that, I'm staying in bed watching memes all day". But there's job that has to be done, and that bothers you.
Writing tests. Oh, words can't describe how much I hate writing tests, any kind of. I tried testing so many times in high school, at university, even at production, but it seems like my mind is just doesn't accept it. I know that testing is fundamentally important, but my mind collapses every time I try to write a single fucking test, resulting in terrible headache. I don't know why it's like that, but it is, and I better repl the shit out of pure function than write fucking tests. -
Not writing tests for your code is like leaving it unguided in the hands of future Devs who gonna just change something and break the core logic and there won't be any regression test to run and check the integrity.

Candidates must check application essay sample to suit their specific purpose
Students require checking any available application essay (https://wikihow.com/Write-an-Applic...) sample for its authenticity and reliability. In this regard, students should remember that maximum number of the papers available on-line, mostly free, is simply the cut and paste job, which make the task of candidates difficult in making their decision. Therefore, it is essential to check the quality of written work of such samples, while students need hunting for the example, which can suit their purpose
For example, students desiring admission to a particular course program in pathology, would need an essay sample, which would relate to the field of analytical medicine, while any written work on the subject of pathological laboratory tests can be excellent. However, finding the topic specific essays like this one would be very difficult, as students need ordering such customized essays.
Therefore, students require spending quite some time in conducting a proper research to find the reliable and trust-worthy essay writing service for getting their customized essay written within the scheduled delivery time. In addition, students should check the sources that the writer would have used for gathering the information, which is presented in the essay, to support its thesis statement.
However, the following guidelines would help students to check the available application essay sample, with regard to its essential ingredients that should be present in such essays. Nevertheless, students could also go through a good term paper help to learn the art of writing a well-defined essay, which can ensure their admission to the coveted course program.
Introduction and the essay topic
Students should check the introduction part of the sample and the method of presenting the topic in it. In addition, the writer should formulate a close link of the topic problem with the thesis statement of the essay. However, as admission officers do not expect candidates to write research papers as their admission essays, the topic question and hypothesis of the essay should be very simple and easy to understand.
However, the topic of the application essay sample should be close to the theme of the assignment. In addition, the students should check the method of presenting arguments in the main essay body, while its introduction should provide hints about them, in brief. Therefore, the sample should provide supporting details like personal examples, while addressing the essay topic.
Check essay language and structure
The language used in the available application essay sample by type of https://500wordessay.org/blog/... should be simple and vivid, while the examples accompanying the discussions should be reader-friendly and easy to understand. Students should realize that selecting officers do not expect them to use any complex terms in their admission essay, as it would give an indication of their bragging, without much reason to do so.
In addition, the essay organization should be such that the contents are transparent and free flowing, while the whole essay writing must be cohesive. Nevertheless, students should look at research paper help for learning the art of locating a good essay sample, on-line.
However, they can find more tips to check the quality of an application essay sample from custom essays.

Not a rant, but seeking advice...
Should I abandon 2 years' worth of work on migrating a personal project from SQL (M$) to a Graph database, and just stick to SQL? And only consider migrating when/if I need graph capabilities?
The project is a small social media platform. Has around ~50 monthly active users.
Why I started the migration in the first place:
• When researching databases, I read that for social media, graph is more suitable. It was, at least in terms of query structure. It was more natural, there were no "joins", and queries were much simpler than their SQL counterparts.
• In case the project got big, I didn't want to have to panic-deal with database issues that come with growth. I had some indexing issues with MSSQL, and it got me worried that at 50MAU I'm having these issues, what would happen if I get more?
• It's a personal project, and the Gremlin language and graph databases looked cool and I was motivated to learn something new.
----
Why I'm considering aborting the migration:
• It's taking too damn long. I'm unable to work on other features because this migration is taking up all my free time. Sunk cost fallacy is hitting me hard with this one.
• In local testing within docker, it's extremely slow. I tried various graph engines (janusgraph, official tinkerpop, orientdb), and the fastest one takes 4-6minutes to complete my server tests. SQL finishes the same tests in under 2 minutes, same docker environment. I also tried running my tests on a remote server (AWS neptune) and it was just as slow. Maybe my queries are bad, but can I afford to spend even more time fine tuning all queries?
• I now realise that "graph = no scalability issues" was naïve of me, and 100% wishful thinking. Scalability issues don't care what database I use, but about how well tuned and configured the whole system is.
• I really want to move on. My tech stack is falling behind and becoming outdated. I'm unable to maintain dependencies.
• I'm worried about losing those 50 MAU because they're essential to gaining traction once I release the platform. I keep telling them about the migration but at some point (2 years later) they're going to get bored I feel.
I guess partially it's a rant because I feel like I shouldn't stop now having spent 2 years on this, but at the same time I feel like I'm heading towards a dead end.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading:)10 -

Understanding Medicare Part B with Variety Benefits Insurance Services
At Variety Benefits Insurance Services, we know that navigating the complexities of Medicare can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding the different parts of the program. One of the key components of Medicare is Medicare Part B. Whether you are just starting with Medicare or reviewing your coverage, we are here to guide you through the ins and outs of Part B and help you choose the best options for your healthcare needs.
Located in Scottsdale, AZ, our experienced team of insurance professionals is here to provide personalized service and expert advice, ensuring you make informed decisions about your healthcare coverage.
What is Medicare Part B?
Medicare Part B is the part of Medicare that covers outpatient care, certain preventive services, and medically necessary services and supplies needed to diagnose or treat health conditions. While Medicare Part A covers inpatient care (such as hospital stays), Part B helps pay for services that you receive outside the hospital setting, including visits to your doctor, medical tests, and preventive care.
Enrolling in Medicare Part B is essential for comprehensive coverage, but it’s important to understand exactly what it includes and how it works with other Medicare options.
Why Do You Need Medicare Part B?
Here are some reasons why Medicare Part B is an important part of your healthcare coverage:
1. Outpatient Care
Medicare Part B covers outpatient care, including routine doctor visits, specialist consultations, lab tests, and diagnostic screenings. Whether you need a physical exam, a check-up with your specialist, or diagnostic tests like bloodwork, Part B helps cover these essential services.
2. Preventive Services
One of the key benefits of Medicare Part B is that it helps cover preventive services, such as cancer screenings, vaccinations, and wellness visits. Preventive care can help detect health issues early and keep your healthcare costs down. Services like flu shots, diabetes screenings, mammograms, and colonoscopies are covered under Part B with no additional out-of-pocket costs if received from a doctor who accepts Medicare.
3. Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
Medicare Part B also helps cover the cost of certain medical equipment that is necessary for your health, such as:
Wheelchairs
Oxygen equipment
Walkers
Hospital beds These items can be crucial in managing chronic conditions and improving your quality of life, and Part B provides coverage to help offset the cost.
4. Mental Health Services
Medicare Part B also covers services related to mental health, such as individual and group therapy sessions. Mental health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and Part B ensures you have access to the care you need to support your mental health.
What Does Medicare Part B Cover?
Medicare Part B covers a wide range of services, including but not limited to:
Doctor’s visits: Whether for routine check-ups or specialized care, Part B covers physician visits.
Emergency room services: Medicare Part B helps cover the costs of emergency services if you need treatment in an emergency room.
Diagnostic tests and lab services: Includes blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, and other diagnostic services that help detect or treat medical conditions.
Outpatient surgeries: If you need surgery that doesn't require an overnight stay, Part B covers the procedure.
Ambulance services: If you need emergency transportation to the hospital, Part B helps cover the cost.
Preventive care: Services such as flu shots, cancer screenings, and other preventive tests that help catch health issues early.
How Does Medicare Part B Work?
To get Medicare Part B, you must sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which typically occurs when you turn 65. Medicare Part B has a monthly premium, which is automatically deducted from your Social Security benefits.

Navigating Product Development: PoC vs. Prototype vs. MVP
We understand the challenges that startups face because we’ve been working alongside entrepreneurs for over 12 years, helping them bring their business ideas to life. One key factor in ensuring success is understanding the differences between PoC (Proof of Concept), Prototype, and MVP (Minimum Viable Product), and how to use them effectively in your product development journey.
Choosing the right approach can help you save time, money, and effort while making sure your idea is on the right path. In this article, we’ll break down PoC, Prototype, and MVP to explore their unique roles, benefits, and outcomes. By understanding each, you’ll be better equipped to decide which one suits your startup’s needs.
PoC, Prototype, & MVP: The Basics
Before we get into the details, let’s first define what PoC, Prototype, and MVP mean so we’re all on the same page:
Proof of Concept (PoC): This is a model or demo built to verify that a particular idea or concept is feasible. A PoC tests whether the core functionality of an idea can be achieved in real-world conditions.
Prototype: A working model of a product that demonstrates how it will function and look. Prototypes often include limited features and are used to gather feedback on design and user interaction.
Minimum Viable Product (MVP): This is a simplified version of the product, featuring only the essential functions. The goal is to launch quickly, gather user feedback, and iterate based on real-world usage.
Now, let’s compare PoC, Prototype, and MVP in more detail.
PoC vs. Prototype vs. MVP: A Quick Comparison
Understanding the differences between PoC, Prototype, and MVP is essential to navigating the product development process. These stages help you minimize risk, save time and money, and ultimately deliver a successful product. Whether you’re at the feasibility stage with a PoC or preparing to launch with an MVP, the right approach can make all the difference.3
