What my twitter looks like after Cloudflare decides to randomly close all my websocket connections from my free Discord bot, leaving it to die from arbitrary rate limits.

Production crashed literally 5 minutes after I went to bed. Collaborators couldn't fix the problem as they had to reset an API key only my account could access. They tried calling me but my phone was muted. Woke up 5 hours later only to realise it had been down all night.

Whoops.

Pushed an update to production but forgot to turn off the debug option to print SQL queries to the log. Now all I see is SQL queries.

It's now hopeless to read the log with tail ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pushing code to production without testing

As a single guy literally trying to run a free service with 1.5M users I know one thing:

SIGKILL never fails.

The joys of being the sole developer and sysadmin of a service with hundreds of thousands of users.

Just spent a couple hours with my family. In that time half the infrastructure died and the service became unstable.

Best of all is that I seem to be the only one getting this so called "java.net.UnknownHostException: System error" exception.

Although web developers are widely feared, only a few species are dangerous to people. Web developers will only bite humans in self-defense, and few web developers produce worse effects than a mosquito bite or bee-sting. Most of those with medically serious bites, such as JavaScript web developers and PHP web developers, would rather flee and bite only when trapped, although this can easily arise by accident. There were about 100 reliably reported deaths from web developer bites in the 20th century.

Looks like my users are enjoying themselves. Bringing my poor dedicated server to a load average of 72/8 at full CPU usage.

If only I wasn't just running an open source project by myself with only crowd-source money to rely on for server costs :v

I run a service with 157311 (mostly inactive) users and I test in production.

Chapter 1: Using all-caps to reach a greater audience

Opened my laptop this morning to see that the touchpad wasn't working
Restarted my computer to see both my touchpad and wifi adapter not working.
Restarted again and then the wifi adapter wasn't working, but the touchpad was.

And now the wifi adapter magically fixes itself.

When you test your backend code thoroughly before pushing to production, but a fatal exception with the much larger production userbase causes one of your vital threads to die with a NullPointerException.

When an app rejects your username for containing an underscore. It's "Fre_d" btw.
