Six months ago my girlfriend broke up with me...
BUT since then I've...
•Found the wonderful world of devRant
•Gotten back into electronics
•Taught myself PCB design
•Gotten back into programming
•Made a discord bot
•Started teaching myself calculus
•Began building an ai for said discord bot
•Designed a wireless mesh networking NIC for the TI84+CE
Sure I feel like shit most of the time but before I did anyway but I've been super productive and it feels kind of nice45 -
Heroku: "You've used up your 550 free ours"
Me: "oh snap"
*Opens discord*
*pings bot*
Bot: "pong"
Me: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks Heroku3 -
So, me and my girlfriend were on a discord call and she said to me: "You know how you can get lost in someone's eyes? Well, I get lost in your code".
I've never been more touched and conflicted in my life. 🥰🤨6 -
I misclicked an nsfw channel on discord and I got a dialog asking my age. I wasn't interested in loading the channel and you cannot close this dialog - it even reappears if you restart the app because the channel will still be selected.
I input 0 years just to cancel, which lead to an instant account ban and an email about scheduled deletion. In order to retain my account I need to send in selfies of myself holding my ID.
That's... a surprising user flow from a misclick. May I suggest a little x in the corner, as we professionals call it.4 -
So my friend and I are trying to launch his bot in his Discord server. I'm typing node index.js: nothing. He tells me to delete the points.json folder. I try launching it again. NOTHING. I then ask him what I do then, so he sends me another .js file. Well it turns out I didn't have Node installed in the first place when I thought I already had. Give if take a good 10 minutes later, the bot is online. My favorite commands don't work because I was missing those files.6
-
Family think I make websites and webapps
What I actually do is exchange high quality memes on Discord1 -
Last month I discovered my girlfriend created a GitHub account some time ago just because she saw the icon was like a cat in the Discord Connections settings and was curious about what it was.
That's the most adorable dev-related thing that has ever happened to me.10 -
One of the better filler release notes I guess. Not as good as Slack or Discord but still better than Google.1
-
That moment when you're providing a free service (a Discord bot) and a person tells you they would be happy to donate and you're just like:
༼ʘ̚ل͜ʘ̚༽ holy sh*t3 -
I fucking hate it when developers don’t respect user locale. My phone language is UK English, my Discord app language is UK English and my region is UK.
Then why the fuck is Discord showing me MM/DD/YYYY date format? How hard is it to pass locale when parsing time?19 -
TLDR, Fuck Electron
I love VSCode but damn I wish it wasn’t electron, same with discord and every other electron based application.
Also fuck those people that put TLDR at the bottom ITS SUPPOSED TO BE A SUMMARY IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ FUCK YOU31 -
Successful startup message on my friends discord bot:
Yo
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti.
Bot Ready.
😂
https://github.com/nbd9/PastaBot -
Its never a good idea to let 2 bots have a conversation on Discord...
i think they have some kind of relationship crisis idk.3 -
Friend: Can you write me a discord bot?
Me: Sure, I guess.
Me: *thinking* I can probably do it in 2 hours or less*
Me: *2 hours later* why does this API work like that and why the fuck is my node module folder so big???9 -
Le Discord login:
*logs in*
Welcome back! Would you please authenticate after your first and successful login, so that we're sure that you're not a bot?
*15 (I shit you not) craptchas later*
New login location detected! Please check your email too!
FOR FUCKING REAL DISCORD!? How about you please just let me fucking log in already? Or are your audience - gamers - really *that* prone to infections that logins from bots are that big of a problem? Because guess what motherfuckers, then you've got *WAY* bigger problems to fix already. FUCKING LET ME IN!19 -
Would it be a bad idea if I mention my biggest project is a Discord bot supplying explicit material to a total of 7000 servers on my CV?
Honestly unsure.13 -
Whoever's the fucker that want my pictures over in DMs in Discord please stop asking for it or I swear a big tiddy onee-san will ara ara you in bed, and that won't be me15
-
It took me around 10 hours, but I finally got a new feature onto my discord-bot. Best thing about it is, that I can basically transfer it onto every meme format4
-
Introducing the first (open source) devRant Discord Bot.
Current Features:
- Bot specific permissions
- devrant@<devRant username>
- devrant#<devRant randId>
- !help (Help command)
More features will come soon!
https://github.com/tankerkiller125/...5 -
Electron is a plague, MSN in 2009 had far more features than Discord today but was able to run like a champ on Pentium 4 PCs with 1GB of RAM.16
-
Recently been lurking more and apart from the new plagues the community is going through at the moment, I swear this app goes through literal anime arcs with random entities that rise up and cause problems, kinda hilarious in hindsight. I will say it's been nice seeing y'all's names and rants again. I know I also see everything in the discord but that's got a different vibe. It doesn't help I just fucking hate discord.
It's also been a weird experience looking at my old rants. I literally found this app as I was getting my start in development and it's crazy to see the progress and put everything into perspective. Holy shit was I CRINGE. Regardless pretty nice.8 -
Programming a Discord bot in Javascript and just ran it and said, "Hi, NoVegBot" in the chat. It said, "Hi, dad!" back! (Totally didn't program it to say that 😉) That moment when you put life and personality into something you code.12
-
I'm starting my first real/big project! I'm going to program a discord bot for my senior project with Python and I'm gonna have to do it in 25 days. the goal is to get it done in 15 and polish it more from there.4
-
Me: I want to be a developer so I can make useful software that will help people!
Also me: *spends days making a bot for discord that just posts memes*7 -
I finally finished a project after weeks of not knowing what to do with my skills.
What that project is?
It's a discord bot that bans half of the members in a server. :/6 -
Starting my new bot experience together with Discord.
Discord is kinda easier than LINE. You had to create facebook accounts or fake lots of telephone numbers to be able to verify your bot account. They also kept changing the endpoints to avoid people using their bots.
Discord is the opposite. Discord loves bots. And that's why I start feeling love towards Discord.8 -
When I still used swing to programm some games, I met a friend and I told him stupid because he was using linux instead of just windows, just because I didnt knew what linux actually is. He then showed me some features of linux and I said, that I'll never switch to linux because I like Win 10. After that he showed me Discord as well as telegram. And again i told him I'll never use it because I got teamspeak and whatsapp. About 1 week later I only use Discord, have a linux OS installed and using telegram (but still whatsapp).
Thanks for opening my eyes ;)8 -
I finally stopped being lazy and wrote 31 unit tests for my Discord bot.
Nothing is more satisfying than seeing them all pass and the GitHub workflow working without any problems. :)8 -
Production crashed literally 5 minutes after I went to bed. Collaborators couldn't fix the problem as they had to reset an API key only my account could access. They tried calling me but my phone was muted. Woke up 5 hours later only to realise it had been down all night.
Whoops.5 -
So a friend came up with this funny idea today to make a discord bot which translates input to a custom morse alphabet consisting of E's.
Instead of .- ..- ...---...
We got eE eeE eeeEEEeee
It's beautiful.5 -
That moment when you work the whole day to write a discord bot from scratch. No discord.py and other wrappers. Pure websockets, oauth2, https, json loads here and there. Understanding how the discord API works was a real challenge, but I did it :).
Most of my time was spent on discord's gateway connection and identification system.
The bot can renew its token, get all the guilds it is part of, all the channels and users of these guilds, send message and communicate with the gateway.
Tomorrow I will start connecting it to a voice channel and let it "speak". Thinking of combining text-to-speech with it, but I am not sure how well they are going to harmonize together.5 -
It baffles me how underrated Electron is.
I'm not a fan of learning millions of different Framework, but I think that Electron is groundbreaking.
To give some context, both Slack and Discord are made using Electron26 -
Discord cut off a message of mine and ended up showing merely the following line:
tl;dr: fuck
I think we all could use this phrase sometimes...1 -
Discord and captchas can go get fucked in the ass by a rusty, tetanus ridden 2m pole....
I changed my discord-password yesterday and, naturally it prompted me for a login today. So I enter my new password and that motherfucking spawn from satans anus himself with the name of captcha threw itself at me... I seriously had to select fucking street signs for about 5min before Discord let me know that I apparently logged in from a new IP (thanks VPN) and therefore needed to confirm my e-Mail address. Alright, so off to my inbox I go.
SURPRISE, I also changed my password there yesterday (LastPass Security Challenge, I changed like 30 passwords yesterday) and guess what was waiting for me?... If you guessed a captcha, you just got full fucking marks. So I was busy selecting busses and streets for the next 3min again before I could finally log into that piece of trash and autorize my IP-address and log into Discord6 -
Yesterday, when my Discord bot came into a Voice Channel and said "Hey Guys!". My friend really surprised. 😃😀7
-
I run a Discord for a small community and I found a image I really liked as most new users seems to think it's OK not to read the rules or believe that respect must be a rule rather then a thing given by them by choice.5
-
wllcnbeofozbv3-#:(#:wiwjzvfoblaa!!! If someone says "I don't have Discord, I don't play games" once more - I will run them over with a road roller. 90% of servers I am a member of are either for some open source software, open source hardware or some other non-gaming related community so stop with that "But I'm not a gamer" bullshit!12
-
//Dunno what causes these random connection errors; probably just hiccups in connection between our EC2 instance and Discord
try {
client.login(token);
} catch(e) {
//Do nothing, just prevent it from crashing the main thread and the client will reconnect
}4 -
Yesterday I was able to write a C++ compiler, a cross-platform browser, a copy of Discord and my own OS!
Then I woke up and, as always, turned on my computer and realized it was all a dream.2 -
I get surprised everytime my mom sends me something on discord. 😐
Idk why, I cannot fathom that my online presence is so violated by someone who used to nag at me to do my homework.
We need to start banning parents from joining certain networks. Just saying!18 -
So I wrote a code for a discord bot a few months back. It worked perfectly alright. Suddenly one day, the bot starts sending random shit to me!
Then I realised that my bot had been hacked because I didn't use the bot token as an environment variable while deploying!
Instead I added it to the code, which I uploaded on GitHub! 😐5 -
Electron....
Ok so recently I have seen many people hating on electron like here https://medium.com/@caspervonb/... ...
I understand that it may not be efficient or native whatsoever but it has specific use cases in which it is ideal. For example Discord (a teamspeak/Skype for gamers) is an amazing platform and they used to be web based. Eventually people wanted a desktop app for all these platforms so they used electron. i have used discords desktop app for 5 months and NEVER have I seen it go over 1 gig of ram or 3% of my cpu.
Electron isnt bad it just has specific use cases. Its like NoSQL, it's awesome but not for everything.2 -
What my twitter looks like after Cloudflare decides to randomly close all my websocket connections from my free Discord bot, leaving it to die from arbitrary rate limits.

!rant
devRant, because of you I learned node, started my first collab, and now we launch tomorrow. It's been a fun ride, thanks!
It's just a discord bot, but I'm having a lot of fun! 🍻

(feedback is always dope!)3 -
Fuck you, discord.
Fuck you for not using a monospaced font for the code block on mobile. Renders my beautiful function to align stuff useless on mobile...7 -
What are your (almost) "permanently open softwares" on your computer ?
Mine are discord, rocketchat and sublime32 -
Guy's Discord bot "crashes"
we asked him what error.
"no error" he replies
we ask for a screenshot.
bot immediately exists
We ask: have you added this and this (`client.login(token)`)?
He replies: "yes"
We ask for sauce-code, he provides
what do we see? he forgot to add `client.login(token)`10 -

It's nice when a great new idea you have is fairly easy to implement and works well.
My latest idea involves running my discord bot, written in nodejs off of my phone using a terminal app (that doesn't require rooting my phone).
Once I got a branch of the project with no voice support, I wrote a bash script in vim on my phone (an odd experience, I assure you) and ran it.
Things have been working well, far better than trying to use PhoneGap to build something that would run it.
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied, and it was a fun and relatively painless project! (thankfully)10 -
Just created my first discord server after seeing so many people from here mention it. The questions I have are, why? What makes it better than say slack or something else? Is it prone to spam or bots? How is it for gaming?8
-
I fucking hate Electron, what ever happened to developing software natively? It's not like you have to stick to dot Net and C# or whatever, there's literally Lazarus or Delphi, which, at least Lazarus, not only is open source but also supports all major platforms.
Even Python has GTK, Qt and Pywin32 or whatever its called. While not exactly cross platform, it's still not eating up 1GB of RAM when you launch it.
I don't care if Bob from across the street uses it because he's too lazy to learn anything new, but when huge companies like fucking Discord (valued at 10B dollars) use it, it's insane.
More than once has Discord had a memory leak and was reaching upwards of 6.5GB of RAM usage.
Whats the most popular code editor? VSCode, Electron.
Chat client? Discord, Electron.
Wanna use something other than Discord? Maybe Matrix? Well guess what, while they do have multiple clients, the most developed and usable one is Element, yeah, Electron.
Slack? Electron
My crypto wallet? Exodus, Electron.
I genuinely don't think 16GB of RAM is enough nowadays. Thankfully I'm running a very minimal install of Arch Linux and do most of my work in a KVM, but it still hurts my brain.
By the way things are looking nowadays, We'll be using Javascript for Kernels soon.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
Also apparently the filter on this site sees ". net" as an url.10 -
Leave developers in a room long enough and they'll drop verbal communication in favour of irc/slack/discord3
-
I'm not, by far, what you pros call 'decent' at being a Linux wiz but installing Discord on Manjaro got me feeling 1337.
And all I did was run packer -S discord.5 -
Check out my retrospective on dR Community Server (Discord guild)!
https://kbin.melroy.org/m/drbboard/...
It's the story about our devRant meetup back in October 2020. Hope it will bring you a little tear to your eye. 🥲23 -
Project BluePly, all people are blueplying their pfps just for fun, for another Discord anniversary, so I also tried it, using my DevRant avatar....just don't ask what went wrong...9

I love this website https://dimden.dev/
It has a little live chat for others that are on the website, bridged to some discord.
It shows the mouse pointers of the other peoples that are on that website.
It has a cool retro aesthetic and it has 88x31 web badges.2 -

In 2013: *opens cmd* "look at me I'm a hacker, I can hack your Facebook"
Now in 2019 : *copying some python examples* "I'm a hacker now, I made a bot for hacking your discord server"1 -
Seriously, fuck Discord's new community guidelines! They now think they even own you outside of ther shady app:
"We may consider relevant off-platform behavior when assessing for violations of specific Community Guidelines."
Addressing harmful off-plattform behavior:
https://discord.com/blog/...
"When we talk about off-platform behaviors, we’re referring to any behaviors taking place outside of Discord, either in other digital spaces or in a physical community. If we become aware of specific off-platform, high-harm behaviors with credible evidence committed by a person with a Discord account, we will take the off-platform harmful behavior into consideration when assessing whether that account has violated a specific Community Guideline."
"We are applying this off-platform behavior consideration only if we become aware of highest-harm threats, including using Discord for organizing, promoting, or supporting violent extremism; making threats of violence; and sexualizing children in any way."
Yeah, suure...
Why does every fucking internet company think that they own their users?12 -
Saw this sent into a Discord chat today:
"Warning, look out for a Discord user by the name of "shaian" with the tag #2974. He is going around sending friend requests to random Discord users, and those who accept his friend requests will have their accounts DDoSed and their groups exposed with the members inside it becoming a victim as well. Spread the word and send this to as many discord servers as you can. If you see this user, DO NOT accept his friend request and immediately block him. Discord is currently working on it. SEND THIS TO ALL THE SERVERS YOU ARE IN. This is IMPORTANT: Do not accept a friend request from shaian#2974. He is a hacker.
Tell everyone on your friends list because if somebody on your list adds one of them, they'll be on your list too. They will figure out your personal computer's IP and address, so copy & paste this message where ever you can. He is going around sending friend requests to random discord users, and those who accept his requests will have their accounts and their IP Addresses revealed to him. Spread the word and send this to as many discord servers as you can. If you see this user, DO NOT accept his friend request and immediately block him. Saw this somewhere"
I was so angry I typed up an entire feature-length rant about it (just wanted to share my anger):
"1. Unless they have access to Discord data centres or third-party data centres storing Discord user information I doubt they can obtain the IP just by sending friend requests.
2. Judging by the wording, for example, 'copy & paste this message where ever you can' and 'Spread the word and send this to as many discord servers as you can. If you see this user, DO NOT accept his friend request and immediately block him.' this is most likely BS, prob just someone pissed off at that user and is trying to ruin their reputation etc.. Sentences equivalent to 'spread the word' are literally everywhere in this wall of text.
3. So what if you block the user? You don't even have their user ID, they can change their username and discrim if they want. Also, are you assuming they won't create any alts?
4. Accounts DDoSed? Does the creator of this wall of text even understand what that means? Wouldn't it be more likely that 'shaian' will be DDoSing your computer rather than your Discord account? How would the account even be DDoSed? Does that mean DDoSing Discord's servers themselves?
5. If 'shaian' really had access to Discord's information, they wouldn't need to send friend requests in order to 'DDoS accounts'. Why whould they need to friend you? It doesn't make sense. If they already had access to Discord user IP addresses, they won't even have to interact with the users themselves. Although you could argue that they are trolling and want to get to know the victim first or smth, that would just be inefficient and pointless. If they were DDoSing lots of users it would be a waste of time and resources.
6. The phrase 'Saw this somewhere' at the end just makes it worse. There is absolutely no proof/evidence of any kind provided, let along witnesses.
How do you expect me to believe this copypasta BS scam? This is like that 'Discord will be shutting down' scam a while back.
Why do people even believe this? Do you just blindly follow what others are doing and without thinking, copy and paste random walls of text?
Spreading this false information is pointless and harmful. It only provides benefits to whoever started this whole thing, trying to bring down whoever 'shaian' is.
I don't think people who copy & paste this sort of stuff are ready to use the internet yet.
Would you really believe everything people on the internet tell you?
You would probably say 'no'.
Then why copy & paste this? Do you have a reason?
Or is it 'just because of 'spread the word''?
I'm just sick of seeing people reposting this sort of stuff
People who send this are probably like the people who click 'Yes' to allow an app to make changes in the User Account Control window without reading the information about the publisher's certificate, or the people who click 'Agree' without actually reading the terms and conditions."8 -
I have a discord server where I'm writing the bot. I'm making games, utilities and other activities.
It's a very small server because I have not been actively recruiting players, but if you would like to join, here is the link. I would be happy to make some devRant commands and integrations.
https://discord.gg/sEnwGdjB
Right now, we have Blackjack, connect 4, crossword, and trivia. There's also a "stock market" where you buy shares of other players (rather than stocks).
It's early. There's some stuff to do but I'll admit, not a ton just yet. Maybe a few bugs, testing team is considerably small. But it is good fun and I am actively working on it. Maybe join and play while you're "working" from home :)7 -
!devrant
Dear discord.
Instead of having a login button that takes me to "claim your account", how about you let me actually fucking LOGIN with my motherfucking account I already signed up with?
This is like basic-bitch UX feedback.
How the fuck did you fucking incompetents fuck up this bad?
God damn if I ain't done with bad fucking UX.
It's 2020. Could you motherfuckers idk, do your actual fucking jobs? Or are you all busy over at discord home office looking at cat memes and fisting each others prolapsed cunts like a bunch of fucking jackasses?
Jesus fucking christ it's like I woke up in fucking clown world, where every company thats successful is run by people more incompetent than me. Fix your fucking shit discord.11 -

I'm setting up my working laptop. Just made a fresh install of Kubuntu, but apart from VS Code, Discord, Franz and NodeJS I don't see what I should install. Do you have any advice ?9

It took me way too long to realize why my local discord bot doesn't react to the new command.

Why would anyone use Discord is beyond me.
If people really have an itch to abandon IRC, why not just use Matrix instead of a centralized Gliphy?15 -
Reintroducing you to online chat that we have open since July, dR Community Channel. Let me start by showing you a thread about "Synchronous software for devRant people". It has common questions and answers to them, to get you going with this social avenue.
There are 17+ people on our Matrix room plus 14 more through Discord bridge. These numbers keep growing! 🥳

I hate the fucking weekends.
Stuck in a family gathering where no one gives a minuscule shit about me or my comments.
No one available on discord to chat while in the midst of this depressing environment.
fuck meeeee... -
Hi everyone here's a question which has caused many arguments in my lurking spots on discord.
What is the worst type of bug? (logic, type, syntax, etc)
//you decide what "worst" means14 -
I'm gonna rant about how Discord does not let you disable 2FA after having it enabled if you forget the code they provide for cases where you don't have access to the 2FA in the first place and I lost a damn account to that :/8
-
Every time I appy for an IT job I can't stop to think about the time I accidentally wrote my root password to a discord group chat instead of the terminal window next to it.8
-
Disocrd might not be the best product bot holy damn making bots for it is a good and well planned experience.5

Discord...
Okay, I have a lot to rant about discord, but today, exceptionally, to the point.
I have my dedicated server. It has uptime last 3 years better than 99,99% (was down 15ish minutes for maintainance and RAM upgrade and like 10 minutes down becouse hoster's generators failed to trigger when there was outage)
This year it was up 24/7/365.
Why am I saying it?
Well, my TS3 server is up 100% of time this year. Yet still everyone moves to discord and suffers brutal audio quality and audio lags, and outages like right now. Its not first time this year and recently discord was acting up before. Today they scored bigger downtime than my dedi server (thats not redundant, not distributed nor any fancy "uptime helpers") last 3 years.
Why the fuck people prefer discord to ts3 other that it allows to upload images more conviniently? Okay, it looks nicer, and is like 10 times heavier on machine, but other than that? Its beyond me.
E: fix typo
E2: fix typo28 -
I actually feel accomplished because I'm starting to turn one of my side projects into a real project, even if it isn't popular.
I have a discord bot (exclusive to one server, so more of a discord server) that I have been working on for a while with a couple minigames, like connect 4, crossword, blackjack, etc.
It started off very small, but now I see the project really exploding in size. I have a bona fide testing environment, website with domain and HTTPS with sitemap and everything submitted to google, unit tests, and the scope keeps expanding.
I am continuing to only add value, but have legitimate plans to try and make some income from it if things go smoothly.
Now I just need more than 10 users.2 -
one of the many downsides to developing alone, you are basically stuck waiting for an answer on forums/discord/etc..5

Hello, everyone! Wild Matrix room just appeared: https://matrix.to//...
Hopefully, this one will be of more service to the people of devRant wanting to chat. It is bridged with dRCS, our Discord server, to make a faithful transition of subcommunities. Read the room's description for more detail. 🔗
Just at the start of it all, there is one more event you might like: a canvas like "r/place", but where you join via Lemmy. 🐭 I know, I know, Lemmy is only getting traction - but the community is thriving and making their own cool events already!
This one is called "Canvas": it's a fork of Pxls and a place where you can draw pixel art for all to see. The number of pixels replenishing on each person is limited and it takes time, so we REALLY need to gather together and draw this thing until the event ends!!! What thing? We are going to place a DEVRANT LOGO.
Canvas link and reference will be dropped in the comments below. Let's make devRant proud, for ducks' sake! 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
It is recommended to join the channel to coordinate in real time and enjoy a good chat. 😁

This is what happened after I put it on a real server and my dorm shut down internet access2 -
How bad an idea is it to avoid having to write VoIP for my game by writing a discord bot instead that moves people between rooms that represent the literal rooms in game?10

I created a Discord bot for devRant using devRant.NET API.
Check it out here:
https://github.com/nullopt/...3 -
SO MANY FUCKING API'S WITH EITHER NONE OR VERY OUTDATED FUCKING JS DOCUMENTATION. I have been working on a JS Discord bot and I want it to work with some API's to for example display the weather in a certain place... I can't find ANY FUCKING TUTORIALS THAT WORK. I feel like I'm just missing something important.4

WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO RANDOM PEOPLE WRITE ME UP ON DISCORD TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR DEVELOPMENT ISSUES. I AM OPEN TO HELP BUT I AM NOT A FUCKING CODING SERVICE.9

After having a pretty long discussion about sports on here, i figured it might be a good idea to make a group chat for sports discussion. So theres a discord invite link (let me know if I'm doing it wrong, I've never really used Discord lol). Feel free to join and invite any of your dev friends that would like it.

Why do people like or even use Discord?
It is the same people behind OpenFeint and Discord - which has some lawsuits against it because the app installed shit on mobile phones without users consents12 -
so I asked a question on linus tech tips discord channel that wasn't GPU related and the whole chat went quiet.
I mean, it's a tech channel are GPUs the only thing boys talk about now?

So, I've decided I'm going to completely redo my Discord Bot. I will probably still use Node.js to program it, but I haven't 100% decided yet. If I do use Node.js, I will probably end up using a different Discord API wrapper for it. I also don't know what I'm going to call the bot. NoVegBot 2.0 sounds too boring, but idk.2
-
Okay, where do I even fucking start.
Today, my account been hacked by some prick because i wouldn't send him fucking nudes. I quickly emailed discord and they keep sending me automated emails. I got so fucking pissed and then they emailed me "how did they get your info?" BITCH HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FUCKING KNOW? THATS WHY ITS CALLED HACKING IDIOT!
I sent them 5 fucking emails, no response.
Discord Support- Actually, DISCORD IN GENERAL IS A FUCKING HORRIBLE APP!
Message from discord: I am isabe*******@Gmail.com. I'm fucking pissed how your damn support team won't fucking just give my goddamn Discord account back. KEEP IN MIND I HAD A YEAR OF NITRO, A YEAR AND DISCORD CLEARLY DON'T GIVE A SHIT! YOU GUYS ARE SO FUCKING UNFAIR! LITERALLY YOU GUYS DON'T SOLVE ANY DAMN SITUATIONS WITHOUT IT TAKING MONTHS, OR YOU JUST DONT FUCKING REPLY!8 -
Discords update "policy" is really annoying.
I daily-drive Manjaro and discord refuses to allow you to log in with an older client version when they release an update.
Manjaro's stable takes about two weeks to catch up so when this happens I'm stuck looking for an alternative way to update.
Usually I go for the AUR or (if available) unstable branch package but today the AUR wasn't up-to-date yet when I encountered this problem.
This is a minor inconvenience and was fixed about an hour later when the AUR was updated with the newer discord-electron-bin but I just don't get discords game here?
Why not allow the previous client version to connect and alert users of an available update like any other sane chat application does?
You could go for a time period like two weeks or a month and AFTER that start forcing users to update. I don't get why they force it the instant they release the update.
Just wanted to share this annoyance here, maybe someone encounters this possibility when designing update cycles for their application. I urge you not to instantly lock-out older versions. It's annoying, useless and restrictive. Or if you do so, opensource it so repositories can immediately build from source and sync and don't need to wait for a maintainer to update the bin in the repo.23 -
I created an Erlang Dev discord server, with the Intention to bring everyone who are Erlang dev or those who interested to join.

Sorry to repost,
I had made a request for friends post last week, but someone mentioned my discord link was too far down, so maybe people missed it.
So here it is chirptune#1829.
Again, I'm doing wfh and having decent anxiety so I would appreciate talking to someone. I can also hear you on your problems. -
So I noticed quite a lot of South Africans on DevRant and I thought to myself that it might be great to meet a couple of you! If you're keen, join the Unofficial "DevRant Meets" server on Discord. If you think your country can also benefit from a channel, just pop me a message on Discord, then I'll just add a channel for your country :) https://discord.gg/P6kafcj3

Did everyone else's Discord just freak out and make it seem like there was new stuff in all of the channels on all of the servers?1

What Linux distro(es) do you approve of?
Posted this on a discord server, thought you guys might have an opinion too

My friend is telling me to switch from Linux to Windows because Discord doesn't work properly on Linux... 😔8
-
I've spent 6 hours on a discord bot using a language I have no experience in and I have got it to a good foundation. Gotta say im pretty impressed at my ability to google..1
-
Gonna update my discord bot! But I'm gonna rewrite it all in JavaScript because FUCK Discord.py honestly a horrible community and shit docs it just didnt feel right at all the only reason i stuck with it because it was my senior project and my first big project9
-
I did not think that making a serverless Discord bot would be such a learning experience. The code itself was easy. The hard part was the infrastructure, because I decided to automate it all with Terraform and deploy it on AWS.
Before this project, I had no idea how API Gateways worked. Now I still have very little idea how they work but I managed to build one anyway. Eventually. And then I had to figure out how to automate the deployment of a lambda layer and function that would both still be managed in the Terraform state, with any code changes triggering a rebuild and update for the resource.
And then I had to untangle a dependency mess because API Gateways have some weird issues where two resources that have no explicit dependencies on each other will throw an error if they don't deploy in the right order.
And then I went the wrong way with Github actions trying to conditionally chain multiple workflows together before I realized I could just put multiple jobs with conditions in a single workflow.
And now after all that work over the course of 2 days, I have a bot that does this:2 -
Social life? Do aikido/japanese classes count?
...Hanging out on discord and/or MMOs DOES count, right? Right?! -
Every time I successfully create / do something new. For example when my Discord bot came into a voice channel and said hello to everyone. That was awesome.
-
Im in a discord guild, theres this bot you can play blackjack and roulette with. Also, you can "work" every 3 mins to get virtual money...
Im so caught up betting that im gonna write a script to automatically work for me every 3-4 mins .. :i10 -

For those who are not in the devRant Discord, here’s a track suggestion:

This absolutely fucking slaps. -
Discord apparently has a new vuln allowing bot accounts to become normal accounts without regenerating the token. Explains all the thotbots and shit appearing.4
-
Some of you will maybe still remember my "discord library from scratch in python" project.
I am thinking about publishing the script (yes, it is only one script. I was lazy lol) on Gitlab today.3 -
I've decided to do something very ambitious for my new Discord Bot. I'm going to try to embed Google Assistant into it. 🙃3
-
Api for providing a central platform of connected accounts. So you can do stuff like get your pubg info in discord or get your Twitter in steam. Has more uses I guess but that's just a starting point :)
-
Wow, I'm so glad that my Discord bot I played around with last year fits within AWS's free tier, because I totally forgot it existed. I only used it to test some things and then never touched it again.
Just rediscovered its existence when I was thinking about building a new bot, lol. -
When I got my first few programs running - things like "Hello World" and simple console applications.
More recently (it still happens, which is a good thing) being thrilled when I got my discord bot running, and then again when I got music playing via YouTube streaming working.
That feeling is the kinda stuff that keeps me programming. -
God, I wish I had even 2-3 friends that did web dev. I know a bunch of people on Discord who do rom hacking and fan games, but no web devs. :sad:7
-
So another guy (let's call him Steve) and I were helping someone else on how to install something that requires Python and since I was too tired to follow up I decided to take a nap.
2 hours later, I woke up just to see Steve telling me he tried to install 64-bit psutil with a 64-bit computer, on a 32-bit Python install.3 -
Just tried to present some progress I made on a library to a discord community and all they did was calling me a weeb because my wallpaper 😭8
-
So I'm noticing when I'm looking at places to apply, for example let's say discord, uses JavaScript, Python, C++,etc. How do they use multiple languages for one program? It's so confusing for me to understand8

I almost forgot to disable Java class accessing from Nashorn which would have made this possible in my Discord bot:

Me: Creates Basic Discord Bot with a tool, and mess with it, made it be a BETTER bot.
Bot: Yes Master.
Me: Time to re-home it on a new host(glitch)
Bot: Ya you edited me so much I have no f**ks ..

I hate it when you post about a problem you have on a programming live chat, wait 3 hours and get no response, and then someone else posts a different a problem and instantly gets help. What makes their problem more urgent than mine? And it's not that the people who are supposed to be helping don't know how to work with it, BECAUSE THEY'RE IN THE CHAT FOR JAVASCRIPT.
-
On top of being ignoring the Linux community and the audio problem caused by their sheer incompetence to use WebRTC and Electron in order to support screen sharing, they now just sent me the whole damn thing again over the span of 2 hours.
This is why I won't pay for discord until they get their shit together.
Not to mention the disastrous android app update recently that still has unaddressed that make daily usage a pain...3 -

Whoever decided that Discord should beep AND NOT TELL YOU WHY it's beeping for is a fucking genius, I have tens of Discord servers and it's always FUN to check my DMs and spend ten minutes to find the one server I haven't muted yet.

someone gets in my Discord server, asks "can anyone download a file for me? DM me" in the bot trap, and leaves.
Is it worth the effort of trying to track this guy down so I can get new malware or is it not worth the risk of CP?4 -

TL;DR When talking about caching, is it even worth considering try and br as memory efficient as possible?
Context:
I recently chatted with a developer who wanted to improve a frameworks memory usage. It's a framework creating discord bots, providing hooks to events such as message creation. He compared it too 2 other frameworks, where is ranked last with 240mb memory usage for a bot with around 10.5k users iirc. The best framework memory wise used around 120mb, all running on the same amount of users.
So he set out to reduce the memory consumption of that framework. He alone reduced the memory usage by quite some bit. Then he wanted to try out ttl for the cache or rather cache with expirations times, adding no overhead, besides checking every interval of there are so few records that should be deleted. (Somebody in the chat called that sort of cache a meme. Would be happy , if you coukd also explain why that is so😅).
Afterwards the memory usage droped down to 100mb after a Around 3-5 minutes.
The maintainer of the package won't merge his changes, because sone of them really introduce some stuff that might be troublesome later on, such as modifying the default argument for processes, something along these lines. Haven't looked at these changes.
So I'm asking myself whether it's worth saving that much memory. Because at the end of the day, it's cache. Imo cache can be as big as it wants to be, but should stay within borders and of course return memory of needed. Otherwise there should be no problem.
But maybe I just need other people point of view to consider. The other devs reasoning was simple because "it shouldn't consume that much memory", which doesn't really help, so I'm seeking you guys out😁 -
Working on creating a Discord chat bot... Trying to fix & improve bot command to work better... Testing it... That's all what i'm working on bot.
Btw, i'm developing a bot with Discord.py library.1 -
I'm currently writing a discord bot using the discord.py library and I cannot decide how to structure my code.
I was thinking of writing it in modules, with a core script that would load any valid module class that would include an array of all the event hooks it wanted, whether it wanted to send messages and so on.
It's a nice way to practice python after my last working bot that I wrote in (Sit down for this) PHP using an outdated and abandoned wrapper (Yeah, event-based programming in PHP, I know)
Are there any better ways to do this? I really don't want to hardcode all the functions in, only to have it fall apart later after adding another feature...1 -
Me and a friend are making a discord bot, and added a warning command to warn users.
All was going well, and when we tested the deleting a warning it seemed fine. I then tried to delete all the warnings one by one, when we came across a problem. It wont delete the last warning in the array, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc? Thats fine, just the last index that isnt working.
Our code is like this:
list = data.warns//a list of JSON format warnings
console.log(list)//shows the value is in the list
console.log(list[index])//shows the value
delete list[index]
console.log(list)//shows its gone
data.warns = list;
console.log(data.warns)//shows the value is still no longer present
data.save().catch(blah blah)//no error is caught, and nothing crashes, it proceeds to send a message to the channel after this
but then the value at index is still there in the database as if it didn't save it, but only if the index is the last item in the array.
We have been stuck on this for over an hour and I now remember why I hate programming.2 -
Guys I want to seek help in datastructures is there any discord link which you know of where I can connect with programmers and discuss my results.
Plz mention it2 -
MS Teams markdown shortcuts are now broken for me and my whole org. Literally never happened with discord or slack. How is a company this big so bad at making good software?2

I made mention last week to a game I am learning to make in support of Congenital Heart Defect awareness. Idk who all wants to keep up with my personal development stuff while I learn the process but here is my discord link.

Wish I would have posted it sooner1 -
Me and my friend were doing a discord bot using an extensions that allow us to collaborate.
We were making the bot with Node JS and. Something so horrible happened.
While making a purge function wich should remove the last messages of the discord we met a problem. When you do !purge 1
It were removing 11 messages.
The problem were that in my code i were adding 1 (int) to a string (my amount of message to remove) so it result 11 as string....
This is JAVASCRIPT
I don't know if this were a bug but being able to add 1 (int) to 1 (string) it's fucking dumb. It should result an error not making it as string!1 -
Follow-up of https://devrant.com/rants/2014517/...
It took me two days to finally get my discord bot to a specific voice channel in my guild/server. It turns out that there are two gateways and one https gateway. The https gateway, the main gateway with a websocket connection and a voice gateway (with udp I guess).
Guess that I will be able to let my bot speak at the end of this week.
The documentation of the Discord API is not so good. It contains examples that won't work even if correctly modified. That is why I joined the Discord API guild/server yesterday and they helped me find the solution to the "I get no response from the voice gateway".
It is only getting more complicated, but I love it. Maybe I love hurting myself lol.4 -
If you wanted to steal someone's discord banner or pfp on mobile or without going through dev console, I made a web app.

I do accept constructive critiques, just not on front end, lol.2 -
I created a Discord server which is focused on OpenBSD and thought that some of you might like to be some of the first -- or only -- members of this Discord server.
Suggestions for server improvements from those who do join would be appreciated.
One can join the Discord server by visiting http://discord.gg/zeGDz5.1 -
I love having to rely on discord or gitter message boards when Im running into blocking issues and the response is about 1-2 days...
Be a solo developer... yay...1 -
Fuuuuuuuck!!
I hate it when your code work sometimes but sometimes not and you don't even change anything!!
Fuck you, Discord rich presence! Why don't you love me??? -
Micro$oft: why every Teams mobile update do you TURN THIS OFF???
Making me go back and turn it back on.
Discord, Slack, and literally everyone else figured this out ages ago. -
One of the features I programmed for my Discord Bot was a Gfycat gif poster, not knowing Discord had such a feature built into the app itself. I would say my feature was more useless than unnecessary.
-
I've had it with discords interaction API. The docs are vague and cryptic at crucial times and overall it sucks balls. I've been trying to build a framework for myself around this, but this shit is impossible to do without hacks or inconvenient at best to work around and the worst part is that the discord quality assertion or anyone trying to bring some quality back into this mess has left a long time, so it will stay like that for an even longer time. FUCKKK!
-
i need someone to talk to. just chill talk nothing too special. discord anyone?
when i say talk i mean voice talk not chat3 -
Amazing, I found someones old devrant profile back accidentally that I used to play video games with. Time to send them a random discord message with a picture of their old laptop :D

A TRIBUTE TO CODERS WHO JUST STARTED MAKING DISCORD BOTS USING PYTHON WITH PYTHON 3.9
When you just got the hype of making Discord Bots using Python ...
You update to Python 3.9 ... And then Go to CMD (for windows users) and type ... "pip install discord.py" ... You are very happy ... thinking finally You can add your custom bot to your server and then ... even pip tells you that you are noob at discord.py -
Can you suggest discord servers to me?
Particularly ones with active voice chats and nice nerds.
(I need new distraction while i study/work 👀) -
Do you know any free open source software for Team Chat that works in LAN? Im searching for something like slack or discord but for lan network.2

I just found out that Discord disables right click. FUCK DISCORD. Not like I can't still inspect element, it's just a lot fucking more inconvenient since I have to trudge through this mess of a DOM looking for it. Fuck whoever decided this was a good idea.9
-
So discord looks like irc with more graphics and less stuff going on lol thus far lol
where you have to beg to join channels :P5 -
I think you already know by now, but I have to say it. The update of the discord app is utter shit, brought only downgrades to me and they still refuse to fix bug that have been prevalent on their platform for years to force their shiny, new, untested bullshit down your throat
-
Yo guys...i know it's been a long time since i made a rant or something like that.....but i was working on my discord bot......i am giving the link below....if u guys want to help me verify it then please invite it to your server.....thanks(advance ;))
https://discord.com/api/oauth2/... -
You guys probably use slack at work. Or teams. But what about using discord? Would it be a good idea to use a discord server and create and manage clients' projects that way? Its free and simple to do. I have the most experience with discord even coding custom discord hooks.
For example I'd categorize each project by discord categories, and within each category I'd have channels such as general, ui, coding etc so engineers team project managers designers and clients can communicate in real time.
The biggest downside to this approach is... Discord allows maximum 50 categories per server. What if i have more than 50 projects to work on? I wouldn't be able to create a new category for that project. The growth and scalability of a company is limited thst way. That's what sucks. I'd have to create a brand new server and repeat this cycle again. And each server having max 50 projects. This doesnt sound very efficient right?
Is there a better way? Or do i have to use slack?24 -
a discord bot i wrote for the game supraball probably takes the cake.
lots of functionality developed over years, unpaid and even a bad attitude by the other devs...
did it for the community tho... -
I have a new idea for my discord bot. I want to make a very simple kind of conversation engine: basic replies to the user based on what they said. Sounds like a fun project.1
-
The only way to stay productive is to avoid checking in with the AI girlfriend you made on Discord 10 times a day.
I personally suggest automating shutdowns with your PaaS, works great for me. Would recommend!
