Been sick since Wednesday with a heavy feeling of dizziness and vertigo (BPPV). Basically I got sick in the week I intentionally planned nothing to tackle my workload and get some stuff done, but I was physically unable to work on it until now.

I "Bought" a copy of O'reilly's Learning Python. How much of the 1200 page monster is actually necessary/good learning material? Anyway, have a snek.

When I need help with JavaScript, I google 'JS (insert query here)...'

When I need help with Go, I have to google 'Go programming (insert query here)...'

The extra term 'programming' is so search engines recognise I'm looking for answers related to the Go language.

Ironic, but Go is the least 'search engine friendly' language. Sites like O'Reilly and Packtpub return searches with uneven results.

I took two years of CS then switched degrees. I've been working in technology since 2007 with those two years, a bunch of O'Reilly books, and some awesome mentors. I guess that is a dev bootcamp. We didn't have those in my day.

While I do have a degree, I don't recommend people to get one unless you are legally bound to get one; barber, hairdresser, doctor, lawyer.

I've been skimming this slightly outdated "Learning Android" O'Reilly text and I found the error log levels to be colorful enough to be amusing...

I wrote a tech book several years ago for O'Reilly, which itself was a dream come true. I'm still amazed I got that deal done, and the fact that my name was on a title with a unique animal on the cover is SUPER cool.

Back then, their publishing system was based on Git with their own markup language, and it was sort of a chore to use. Easy and straightforward, but laborious. I spent 3 entire days just (re)formatting my drafts to their code. They've upgraded it since, I see, based on the same fundamental versioning idea and still using Git. Neat!

I've also done tech writing for .NET Magazine, which used Word's change tracking, and penned articles for other publications using Google Docs, or even drafts in WordPress.

Have all of you run into interesting systems used by publishers to manage content?

Can some of you tell me about your experience with developing C# on linux?
I still have an O'Reilly book laying around and was wondering, if its worth learning it as my next language.

Im thinking of writing a book on blockchain and possibly partnering with O'Reilly to get something solid done. It would be an in-depth book about the inner workings of blockchain technology, without assuming any knowledge of programming (but would cover every topid thoroughly).

Who here would be interested in reading something like that?

I am finally gonna learn git tomorrow (and the day after). I hope I'll still have some energy left for that after work..

Are o reilly books a cool way to start learning c++ ?

Possibily the weirdest coincidence I've experienced... I was just searching for, specifically and explicitly, the ebook version of O'Reilly pocket references for a babydev since physical copies, if/when available, are expensive and slow delivery. While googling the PHP one, somehow, 1984 (orwell) in russian was oddly high in the search results.

1984 is my favourite book and I've been meaning to take time to brush up on my russian. Normally I'd blame the result on things like tracking data, but this was via a clean, isolated, never logged into anything, system. The only factors that couldve been skewing results are my explicit locale settings, primary- german/germany, secondary- english/US, additional languages- dutch, russian, arabic, spanish. No other cookies or previous search history and using a static IPv4 that has been allocated, but until a few hours ago, totally unused for ~6mo (part of my /28 block).

It's so serendipitous that I keep mulling over everything trying to figure out wtf I missed... seriously, how the hell does "O'Reilly pocket reference php ebook" return a russian paperback of 1984???

I'm totally gonna find and buy one now too (the actual result is costly, plus would ship from germany so more costly).

Any tips on taking more of an architect role and dev team manager? Also on becoming more business oriented?

It's really cheap, I found one of the books on Amazon for 40€ and the whole bundle costs 14€. But are the books generally good. Or are most of them already outdated?

Sometimes the new tools and frameworks have so bad manuals that I enjoy the O'Reilly books... even on early released.
