Just had a recruiter turn me down because my GitHub commit frequency wasn't high enough, I asked for a link to the employers GitHub account, "sorry, they don't contribute to open source projects".8

Deep Thought Rant
It's funny how the world works these days...companies only looking for "senior *something*" developers to work...
Mentorship and internship also do matter. What's happening?...sure you can contribute to open source but having a mentor also helps. Working as an intern allows one to see not only tech bit but workplace environment. How to deal with deadlines, feeling good and wasted at the same time when one bug that took a 3 minutes to fix but 3 hours to find, presenting your work; well what's working only, being bashed when it's your fault or not (even though that sucks), learning from your mentor and so on
Are their companies that still do this?3 -
My System Analysis professor wants to fail me because I refuse to store PDF files in the database in my project.
He wants me to store THE WHOLE BINARY FILE in the database instead of on the filesystem.
When I tried to explain why that would be bad, he interrupted me and began the "you think you know more than I do? I've been teaching this for X years" speech.
How do such people become professors?24 -
I accidentally washed my headphones along with my clothes last night. One side has lost all bass 😢
On the plus side, they smell amazing.17 -
Porting Java Code to Kotlin manually, just to get a better understanding of the language. Best thing so far, NO more Assertive Exception Handling.
Damnit Java, I know it for a fact that the damned thing won't throw an exception! There's Careful and Paranoid. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE5 -
Just started learning Android with Kotlin and is really nice but why the hell the sintaxis has to be in some cases really weird 😲6

So our company hired a new COO few months ago, and he oversees digital department as well
recently he called the digital department into his office to talk about a new campaign for a client, and client's mascot is a ladybug, so he goes like this
COO: So i was thinking, we need to make people more aware about the new branch opening
COO: I have a creative / innovative idea, we probably can get an award for this and I'm sure client will be really impressed with this. Why don't we put ladybugs on Google homepage, just walking around flapping their wings and stuff, i mean everyone visits Google right ?
Our Team: awkwardly looking at each other
Me: 😐😐😐😐
( I was confused what to think )
Then our designer calmly explained him why it wouldn't work while we were trying our best not to laugh
how the fuck someone like him manage to stay alive all these years and become a COO, i mean he doesn't have to know it all but damn this is common sense10 -
Our CTO has been told, this morning by management, that our development department is "too quiet" and that it's spoiling "the atmosphere" of the office space.
So we've ordered mechanical keyboards.21 -
it was 12am when we are ready to launch our new web design which requires a lot of hardwork and routing processes. my team lead was the one who pushes the button to production using "cap production deploy" command. everyone in the room (including PM) was like counting down like launching a rocket to space. the feeling is great knowing that everyone was sleepy at that time. im glad it went smooth and everyone congratulates each other.3

Who shares this struggle?
I have a 9-5 development job and I also have a personal web application I am building and plan to bring to production.
There are simply not enough hours in the day. I struggle to find enough time to work on my personal project while still performing well at the 9-5 and spending some time with my family so I'm not absent.
Agh I wish I could pause time for productivity 😂29 -
why are we having a flame war on best programming language! it is personal choice and everything has its own purpose and importance. as a dev we should respect that14
-
The myth about the missing semicolon. I don't get it, if your editor doesn't pick it up, the compiler og interpreter will. How is this a common problem?4
-
When you've spent 16 hours out of 24 programming and realise that you've not eaten, drunk, or even pooped. Well, that just happened5
-
Can we all grow up and acknowledge that every programming language has its benefits and drawbacks? You don't sound edgy and sophisticated by only advocating for your language of choice, you twat.18
-
Am I the only one? When you pushing hard in the night, to finish some code; after you done, thinking to sleep, then your stomach reminds you - there's something called eating.3

It's my birthday and I just got enough upvotes for some stickers.
We need rubber ducks now devRant.6 -
I worked with another developer who argued with every choice the rest of the team made, wrote overly complicated code, and was so stubborn we ended up arguing every day for 2 weeks over his poor decisions. I nearly quit twice, and nearly beat him to death with his own keyboard multiple times.2

Today I turn 25!
All I want for my birthday is a stressball.
If the guy who just turned 30 can get one :) ...
~ shameless request ~15 -
Client: "Let's code a prototype to show our intents to the customer. We have 96 screens to implement as a native app in 6 weeks"
~Prototype delivered in 6 weeks, despite some changes in the design on-the-go. Few months later~
Client: "The customer likes the prototype a lot. They would like to see some changes (another set of > 40 screens). It's still a prototype and the changes should be implemented in a month, but this time it has to use real data from external apis. We don't know which APIs yet, but it should also go live on the app store"
Like, seriously?8 -
Her: what app is that?
Me: devRant. It's where devs go to complain about things only we'll understand and just talk nerdy to each other.
Her: So where you and your people go to be yourselves?
Me: Basically, yeah.
Her: I thought that was Twitter.
Me: It was, now it's this.
Her: Then what's Twitter for?
Me: ...news?9
