Dear Misinformed idiots,
Just because you watched Silicon Valley doesn't mean you actually understand how Software Development works.
-We don't sit in front of a screen in an AC room googling funny pictures
-We don't think of new Algorithms by pretending to be jerking.
-We don't "get lucky" with our code, it takes hours of studying and research to come up with a solution which actually works.
-And we definitely can't just "create the *next* Google", THAT is not how it works.
I swear to the God ya'll love and cherish, the next person to approach me to turn their shit idea into "The next big thing", I'll leave everything aside and drive a screwdriver through your neck.
- An Engineer tired of everyone's never ending shit storm.10 -
I just gave a 20 minute presentation in front of fifty people, and apparently did well enough that I got five private compliments afterwards, including one from the vice president. 🥳
And all of that without a single drop of rum!17 -
I'm really not much of a drinker, but last night I was apparently.
I thought I played video games until I passed out on the couch and was carried to bed.
This morning, my laptop reveals to me that I had an idea for a web app last night because I made a very misspelled, yet highly detailed to do list for the app, a very blank index file, and 37 open tabs of what looks like research for certain web features.
Project seemed to be some sort of organization thing with a lot of really random and unrelated features like "fruit meterr that scales different fruits you earn" (what does that even mean??) and "sassy bill reminder".
I'm closing out all the tabs I had opened, when I see the tab showing the domain name I chose and bought. I even got the SSL certificate and email domain purchased.
Drunk me seemed to have been really excited about this idea 😶19 -
I think I just invented a thing.
Mouse drop.
It should be a thing.
The next time I switch jobs I'll definitely do a mouse drop before I leave the building.9 -
The cool thing about side projects is you can do whatever you want.
The shitty thing is you never complete whatever you want.7 -
*meeting with boss about a quick site for one of her clients*
Boss- "okay so basically I just want you to copy the content from -already made site- and put it on the new one"
Me- "okay sure do you want it verbatim or "
Boss-"no but something similar"
Me-"okay so you want me to paraphrase this list that's on the homepage?"
Boss-"Well no we dont actually need the list at all as it isnt relevant to us so just take that out"
Me-"okay well that is the only thing on the homepage so what should I replace it with"
Boss-"I dont know, something similar to the list. You can figure something out"
Me-"....I dont know anything about the clients business. I am not going to just make up content, you guys can at least give me some direction there"
Boss-"i didnt think it would be that hard"
Me-"it's really not hard. You're making it harder than it needs to be for me though. Anyway, do you wanna keep the same exact pages as the other site or only transfer some of them or"
Boss-"something that resembles that website but isnt exactly it so some of the pages but not all"
Me-"which ones"
Boss-"the ones relevant to client's business"
Me-*closes notebook, stands up, starts to leave room*
Boss-"where are you going"
Me-"I'm going to get another two cups of coffee cause I didnt have enough this morning for this bullshit"
Boss-*raises eyebrow*
Me-"dont tell me to copy paste a website at first and then continue to tell me its going to be "similar" but different and then further continue to be as vague as possible about what is expected of me to be done in order to make it different! Take the time to decide what it is you want exactly and then tell me, with detail, what you're criteria is so I can do the thing!! I cant read your mind."
Boss-"..... I just didnt think it would be that hard to jot in a few sentences here and there"
I left the room at that point. Irritating as fuck. You dont know tech stuff, don't expect me to know enough about YOUR job to write about it as if I'm a professional. I cant fucking read minds, I have no interest in researching anything just to create the site content myself, and its fucking rude that they wont even take the time to sit down and decide what they want for a website that THEY are paying for. For fucks sake people get your fucking shit together13 -
At our first programming course at uni (it was in C), a student asks in class:
Student: what is a pointer?
Teacher: i don't know, i only know Java.
How the hell did the poor guy end up teaching C then?!6 -
So a fucking friend of mine makes me meet this fella who is a big shot according to his LinkedIn and please note has too much experience with Web Apps and Python
Me being naive actually trusted that and I meet him.
Fella: So what do you do?
Me: I am into Cyber Security nothing much I just do bug hunting for now
Fella: You know python will help you right?
Me: Sorry?
Fella: You see you have to be a python programmer for anything you want to do in CS
Me: Me yeah I kinda know python actually I am more into Ruby from start so ( Around this time I kinda sensed that he is a fake tech guy he is a corporate asshole)
Fella: show me any of your work
Me: (So to show him one of the thing I was working on I open GitHub desktop app) Me explaining blah blah blah
*Fella is in shock*
So at this point I was thinking probably he is impressed and that's why the shock right?
No a big fucking no
Apparently he never heard about GitHub or git and got blown away by the interface.
And the friend who made me meet that guy is not my fucking friend anymore that prick can die for ruining my day18 -
why are we having a flame war on best programming language! it is personal choice and everything has its own purpose and importance. as a dev we should respect that14

Micromanager: “@Root, you need to do <thing>! It’s important, and very unprofessional if you don’t. Bad things can happen if you don’t do the thing. You need to get into the habit of doing the thing.”

Micromanager: Doesn’t do the thing.

Micromanager: “You need to work on your reputation, @Root!”16 -
Stupid bloody PM.
I asked him for two images a long time ago: a 1x and a 2x ‘0’ monogram for Apple wallets, since we currently have monograms for glyphs 1-9 and a-z. And this is in production, so any merchant whose name starts with a ‘0’ will cause a crash. We’ve been fortunate thus far.
But this PM. He lied about who needed to make the images for three weeks, saying it’s up to the designer, when he actually made them himself. He also said he was going to take care of handing the task off, and never did, and then said designer when on FTO. When I asked the designer about it after he came back, he had no clue what graphics (and even the feature) I was talking about, or even what the requirements for the graphics might be. I had to confront the PM before he admitted he made the originals, and (begrudgingly) said he would make the new ones.
When said PM did finally make the images, the colors were all wrong. They’re not the light teal from our branding, they’re dark blue and the font is different, making them pretty ugly.
Also, after assuring me that the naming convention for the new images is the same, I discover that they’re neither organized into folders nor even named properly. (And yes, he is aware of how it should be.) I can rename and move them around easily enough, but come on, don’t say you did the work and then give me a mess to clean up!
And to top it all off, he completely spaced making the ‘u’ monograms, so I’m still short a fucking glyph!
Asdfjskldf.
How do you do every single thing wrong? Like, how!?1 -
What's the best thing to do the day before your deadline you ask?
Personally I've found discovering you've done the whole thing wrong is not the best idea... -

So, I set up my computer after moving and settling in.
Turns out all the jostling killed the pump on my water cooler 🙁 It now sounds like an unmaintained soviet train at full speed, and starts burning up. Poor thing.
Guess it’s time to build a new one. Though parts aren’t exactly available right now...

Is this learning job cpu intensive or memory intensive?
I don't know and I don't give a flying fuck, because it's 6:20pm and I have not found any of my favorite servers free to rerun this shit the whole fucking week, so this server (which I have actually killed before, btw) can suck a dick and do its fucking job.

Pulled this from a web site's privacy policy. Remember, just because there's a switch doesn't mean anyone has to abide to that rule.
Browser “Do Not Track” Signals: Most browsers contain a “do-not-track” setting. In general, when a “do-not-track” setting is active, the user’s browser notifies other websites that the user does not want their personal information and online behavior to be tracked and used, for example, for behavioral advertising. As required by recent Shine the Light law amendments we are required to inform you that, as is the case with most websites, we do not honor or alter our behavior when a user to one of our Websites has activated the “do-not-track” setting on his/her browser.5 -

This was about 3 years ago. I’m on vacation and just getting off the plane, when my boss calls me on his cellphone. Apparently the crontab on our main file upload server had gotten nuked, and he was asking if there were any backups.
A word about this server. I work with video, so this thing is doing about a few gigabits of traffic incoming at any moment. The cron jobs are necessary to move and organize these massive files into a sane scheme for processing. Hundreds of drop folders receiving thousands of files resulting in terabytes of data every single day. Our storage vendor tells us we have the third largest deployment they know about.
No cron jobs mean all of this content is just sitting around piling up. I tell him sorry, try contacting $otherAdmin since he’s more familiar with that system.
A few days later, after the vacation, I come back in. $boss and $otherAdmin have reconstructed the crontab from scratch after an all nighter.
I ask how it got deleted.
$boss was training some people how to set up new customers on this file server, and he told the trainees to open the crontab in read-only mode. One of them ran:
crontab -r
Yes, we back up our crontabs now.3 -
GodDAMN, C# 7.0 is so ridiculously feature packed. I can pattern-match inside a predicate on an exception filter. Want to catch ONLY NHibernate's exceptions caused by a SQL timeout? Boom:
catch (GenericADOException adoEx) when (adoEx.InnerException is SqlException sqlEx && sqlEx.Number == -2) { return Failure("timeout"); }7 -

I gave you a chance, Nvidia. It could have been a good thing, but no. You are still crap. About two years ago, my son's graphics card (an Nvidia) died, so I thought, I'll give him my nice Radeon card, and got myself a new card. For some reason, reason failed me, and I got a GTX 1070. It's been a nice enough card, and worked well. And then the last driver update happened. Fallout 4 started to CTD before it even booted to the main menu. Me, not thinking (again) thought it was a mod, so I uninstalled and deleted and reinstalled again, with all 120 mods. Nope. Still crashing. Then I noticed, as the game booted, the fans started to ramp up, and I could tell exactly when it would crash be the sound of fans. I was expecting the computer to taxi out the room. Rolled the driver update back to the last one that worked. Now I can log in again, and things are mostly stable. Still crashes, but not as bad, probably due to reloading the mods and missing something. When the RX 3080 hits the market, bye bye Nvidia. You haven't changed a bit over the years. We're through.8

Windows is weird. Flagging a fully functioning game application as (Not Responding). It's not even lagging or freezing. It's just. Working. Perfectly.14

Do one thing... That's where the trouble starts.
Yeah. Architecture and separation, these are the foundation.
If you don't do these two in a proper and sane way, you most likely end up with the rotten pile of shit most companies call micro services.
Hot glued unmaintainable mess of deprecated shit stapled together by a custom framework abomination cause no one gave a flying fuck to properly design it.
I see these things daily.
I write the reminders every week.
"Hey, lil retarded dev, you don't need that dependency, you can just use languages feature XY added in version XY"
"But that's how I always did it"
Moments where you want to apply violence from the category "inhumane".
Or even more retarded: Yeah it does everything that was written in that one epic that took 6 months with 30 devs to finish.
I sometimes really wonder how some people managed to survive till they got the job. Parents must have been pretty vigilant 24/7...

The piece of software I'm working on at my job just feels fucking stupid and brainless right now. I know it is not, I know it's working, I know it'll be actually useful to its users but I don't feel like that.
I usually go by telling myself "Most of the time I do like what I do, but sometimes it's just work that has to be done" - but for the last month or so it felt like my motivation is completly drained and not coming back fast enough. Just thinking about it feels like desperate, tired crawling on Legos.
On the other hand, at least I've got some motivation for my studies back which feels great. -
hey ranteros! i like to dream and i know many of us dream of a nice machine to do anything on it, if you want to post the specs of your ideal build(s) (even a laptop, pre-built pc, space gray macbook pro... doesn't matter). and your current one.
here's mine:
ideal: {
type: desktop-pc,
cpu: intel i7-8700K (coffee lake),
gpu: nvidia geforce gtx 1080ti,
ram: 32gb ddr4,
storage: {
ssd: samsung 960 evo 500gb,
hdd: 2tb wd black
},
motherboard: any good motherboard that supports coffee lake and has a good selection of i/o,
psu: anything juicy enough, silver rated,
cooling: i don't care about liquid cooling that much, or maybe i'm just afraid of it,
case: i accept any form factor, as long as it's not too oBNoxi0Us,
peripherals: {
monitor: 1080p, maybe 1440p, i can't 4k because of the media i consume (i have tons of shit i watch in 720p) + other reasons,
keyboardmousecombo: i like logitech stuff, nothing fancy, their non mechanical keyboards are nice, for mice the mx master 2 is nice i think, i also don't care about rgb because i think it's too distracting and i'm always in darkness so some white backlight is great
},
os: windows 10, tails (i have some questions about tails i'll be asking in a different post,
}
i think this is enough for ideal, now reality:
current: {
type: laptop,
brand: acer (aspire 7736z),
cpu: pentium dual-core 2.10ghz,
gpu: geforce g210m 2gb (with cuda™!),
ram: 4gb ddr3,
storage: hdd 500gb wd blue 5400rpm (this motherfucker stood the test of time because it's still working since i bought this thing (the laptop as it is) used in late 2009 although it's full of bad sectors and might anytime, don't worry i have everything backed up, i have a total of 5 hdds varying from 320gb to 1tb with different stuff on them),
screen: 17 inch hd-ready!!! (i think it's a tn panel), i've never done a test on color accuracy, but to my eyes it's bright, colorful, and has some dust particles between the lcd and backlight hah,
other cool things: dvd player/burner, full-sized keyboard with numeric keypad, vga, hdmi, 4 usb ports, ethernet, wi-fi haha, and it's hot, i mean so hot, hotter than elsa jean and piper perri combined,
os: windows 10, tails
}
if you read this whole thing i love you, and if you have some time to spare on a sunday you can share your dream rig and the sometimes cruel current one if you dare. you don't have to share them both. i know many will go b.o.b and say "what you're hoping to accomplish, i already did bitch.", that's cool as well, brag about your cool rig!6 -
HR: good news! We're going to be moving your whole floor to a **newly renovated floor** in our main building.
Me (thinking): sounds good! It'll be all new and I'll be reintegrated with the main population, see young ppl (girls) finally.
HR: there will be no assigned seating though. Do you think you will have any problems finding a seat since your deaf?
Me: Hm.... should be fine... (Thinking: so no nobody will care if I work from home or not...yes!)
HR: Actually they said they can give you a fixed seat!
Me: wow thanks!
(Wait... Fuck... Did they actually review my low physical attendance rate so now if I become the only guy with a fixed seat on the floor, I will have to show up more instead of working remotely whenever I want (the rest of my team are in different countries)... I will literally be the center of attention...)4 -

My first freelance dev job thing, turned out alright. For the first year though, the dev job thing became a tech support thing. Oh the horror.

Ok, so I have been lurking around here for a while now. Not at all knowing what to rant about. I like my work, I don't have to deal too much with annoying (or almost any at all) customers and all in all I feel fine.
However, I feel like I want to, in some way step into this awesome community in other ways than just comments and ++.
So this post will be about a book. It's almost our Bible. Well it's probably the closest thing to a proper part of the trilogy we will get.
And for not being written by Douglas Adams (the almighty) himself; this book is surprisingly good! If you haven't, and get your hands on it, do read it!3 -

Actually have a dev thing to say now.
I wrote a script to compile my kernel with the latest mainline version using my current config options. It works...so far. I'll check back with it in a couple months and hope it still works good. It also checks daily if my kernel is out of date (yes I'm one of those, fight me)
Also managed to get my laptop to boot from power on to LightDM in 15 seconds, and 9 of those seconds are firmware. It DOES have this thing on occasion where it freezes during the boot process while initializing everything tho?? I've been meaning to try and figure it out for a minute but I put it off so much cause I don't reboot that often anyways.
As for a personal update, I hung out with some good friends today and my best friend heard my singing voice for the first time, she said I have a good voice (she does a lot of musicals and stuff and just sings all the time, so I trust her opinion). I also gave that friend a gaming laptop as a late birthday gift/early graduation gift today because she doesn't have anything to game on and I didn't really use the laptop much anyways. Plus she's like my favorite person ever and she really deserves it. Unrelated note, I have had an off and on crush on this girl for 2 years. She's always been there for me and she's just an amazing person.9 -
I worked for 6 hours on my website and I have done just the header. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing.2

Apache why???
Your projects' page let's me view all the projects sorted by category, language, etc.
https://projects.apache.org/project...
But I can't view a description... I have to open the link...
Starts writing a scraper and realizes the project list is not static, it's loaded from a JSON document using JS... The document has all the descriptions and other info...
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU NOT SHOW THIS ON THE PAGE BUT MAKE EVERYONE OPEN ANOTHER PAGE SEE THEM...
Spends an hour writing an app in C# to parse the json because a simple Flattener isn't good enough because of the structure...
Probably going to end up creating a GUI so I can browse it more easily and Star the ones I may be interested in...3 -

I hope I’m not the only person who drafts a plan to build a thing to do a thing, and in the course of research about implementing the thing, winds up mashing together several other unrelated things because they looked like fun and the original thing gets left behind. (Oh, look, squirrel!)1

I just noticed that it seems reading devRant has made me more prone to cursing (when I'm texting)... Is that a good thing or a thing?4

Trained model with L2 regularisation. Didn't really see much of a difference to L1. Checked everything again... turned out I had re-run the L1 setup instead of the L2. *facepalm*1

The nice thing about being a developer? Learning something new every day. The worst thing about being a developer? Going back to the code you wrote before learning these new things.2

The challenge of interesting side projects is that it's not just the thing. It's the thing then a whole-ass visualisation library. Or tooling for whatever stupid thing I want to do.
Also then I get bored and start on the next thing.9 -
Thing<T>
Them: it's that thing<a>!
Me: actually it's this thing<b>.
Them: oh of course! Because of these reasons!
*Next day*
Me: it turned out it is was thing<b>
Them: oh so I was right! I knew it was thing<b>. I'm so smart you should listen to me more.

Every day about anything. Why are people so annoying?3 -
I used to think that nothing could load faster than the "Thing With 'S' Logo" on a 4 gigs machine. But then Nadella's army updated their "Thing With Blue Logo" to the "Thing With Orange Logo". Plus the extra features, integrated source control, extensions and more.14

Is 'Ikea Programming' a thing?
If it isn't yet, we should make it a thing - for those people who call themselves "programmers" after copy-pasting a few lines of code from stack-overflow ( or elsewhere ) and gets it working.
And then claims, "It works right? Don't touch it."
I'm going to start using it already.
( but it wouldn't be any fun to call someone names over video conferencing. that's the fun of going to an 'office'. I guess I'm missing it now. )
PS : the long conversation screenshot is only for context, but the highlighted part should be sufficient to get what I'm talking about.question ikea programming copy-paste not programmers we should totally make it a thing copy-paste programmers3 -
I was told I have to integrate my current project for my current group with my first group's baseline. W/e. As long as I get paid.
Well the issue is, I haven't been with that group in a year and a half. And their product, I now realize, is terrible. I better get a great fucking performance review. -

Is there one thing right with this page's css? If they can't get such an easy thing right, why would I trust them on getting their server software right?

I was at school the whole last week, and could work on my Ruby / React project the whole time, but now that I'm back to work, I forgot how to PHP 😅

Are there any JavaScripts dev out there using Eclipse (excluding students who are being forced)?
Is this actually a thing in 2019?
I'm being asked to run a JS seminar with Eclipse as the IDE. I've not seen this used in a JS shop for ages. Are there significant pockets of use out there that I'm unaware of?3 -
First time using Expo in an already built React Native project. Good thing makes project lighter and easier to work with on slow devices.
However:
Bye bye Gradle build
Hello Build queued, let's see how this will go -
What is your goto style of music? What is your empowering 'lets do this' or " I'm in the zone" thing?
For me I have a collection of various genres of music I've collected over time and I slap together several songs at the days start and get going.
Usually I end up looping a single high energy song all day (rock usually. Especially older rock)13 -
Make something useful not everyone will utilize the thing.
Make everyone believe something absolutely necessary or give them no choice and everyone will utilize the thing.13 -

Found this randomly on the internet. Does anyone know what it does?2 -
One thing I do well and the only thing I like doing, and the only thing I could think of doing at all1

interesting thing when I google "timer js" and see no package for timer.js yet? like timer.start(thing). timer.end(thing). should I make it? 🤔😁2

Best thing: Getting into some pure functional programming
Worst thing: Being forced to work with VS2013 -
I thought the hardest thing in life is getting laid for me but it turns out the hardest thing in life for me is starting a startup2

So how you like opera accepting ipfs crypto domains ?
I just started being interested in it as it might move people to encrypted internet.
You think things like unstoppable domains and metamask are the future of internet ?
I can find anything useful that is on crypto domains right now.2 -
Until I started posting on here, I was the only thing that was working on my computer and the only thing that I expected to work on my computer.

I'm seeing the rails intro by the creator and being honest, I'm not sure if all the abstraction is a really good thing or a really bad thing.1
-
Maybe, instead of making a cloth, I should just make tutorials teaching people how to code the duck? Also other things? Like the chat box I have(literally a box written in html and css), the rabbit thing, the cat thing, the avatar thing.
God I have so many useless projects I can showcase.3 -
Testing, Software testing, every industrial tester, it's your call, can you come up with one cool thing about software testing? For me, cool thing about testing is to see the automation. What about you?3

@dfox must have known asking what the worst thing about being a dev is would get far more responses than asking what the best thing is.

Generally dissapointed with the AC series the last few years but, I'm too hyped for Assassin's Creed Origins. It's a bad thing getting hyped, but I can't help it, damn it.
-
I can't remember the results of this thing I'm writing well enough to know whether its a pointless thing to do.2

Honestly bad at this front-end thing. CSS you fix one thing and it affects something else, at least that's what I've been experiencing.4

1. Only thing where correct logic doesn't backfire at you.
2. It is a wonderful thing where you get the satisfaction of solving something, organizing things and making things look beautiful all at once.
3. Its the only thing I know how to do to make money :p -
The only thing I really need from the library has protected access, so I had to fork all the thing and add it as a module just to change it to public
