tl;dr: spent 12 hours creating an api for a job interview challenge. Got rejected after 4 weeks with no real feedback, and all I can do is rant!

So I was in the interview process with a company that was a great fit for my background.

Got through a couple of phone screens, and was given a coding challenge consisting of writing a web API with a couple of endpoints and a filter function.

I'm like, ok no problem, I happen to have created apis for some mobile apps in the past, and I pick Django rest framework to get the job done.

Implemented it on a Sunday, wrote a medium size Readme.md and some unit tests and submit. Took almost four weeks and a partial resubmission to get a rejection with no specific feedback.

Now I'm shamelessly butthurt and I have nothing else to do but rant! Worse part is I looked back at the code and in my opinion is solid AF, so I put it on my public GitHub cause fuck it!

A recruiter contacted me regarding Django Framework and asked me to complete one assignment in REST Framework as a recruitment process.

Haven't heard from them since then.

In Django code, looking at a class for caching REST calls. The cache is using Redis via Django's cache layer. In order to store different sets of parameters, each endpoint gets a "master" cache, that lists the other Redis keys, so they can be deleted when evicting the cache. Something isn't right, though. The cache has steadily increased in size and slowed down since 2014 even though many events clear the whole thing!

... And then it hit me. Nothing empties the list of cache keys. Nothing. So it has been growing endlessly since 2014. And everytime it grows, cache eviction gets a little more expensive, network traffic increases a little more, and cache evictions get a little slower.

Fixing this bug took things that were taking routinely an entire minute to complete and made them take a couple seconds.

Started Learning django rest framework. Yay.

Part of my job involves researching a shitload of documentation and tutorials in order to have an established and well tested point of refference for the rest of the team. As a Django guy, I have always been happy with the plethora of tutorials and what not made available for this amazing framework. Until recently I had absolutely no clue that MDN had their own Django tutorial and I must say....I am impressed! I seldom recommend something over the already great tutorial made available by the Django page itself, but this one by MDN really is worth considerind for people starting into the framework. One can even see the love that they have for the framework just by reading the tutorials.

Kudos to MDN for creating such a great resource!

Django (& REST) tutorials in a nutshell 🙄

hmmmmmm let me see.

Web based? lets do web based.

Do something simple like a basic crud app on web api format:
Do it with full authorization and authentication.
Start hard. Do it with pure golang using NOTHING but the std libraries.
Now, do it in a magic mvc framework like Rails or Laravel
Now do it on dotnet core
Now do it in django rest.

Watch the differences in all of them, sell your soul to something and now do it in Clojure. If you do it on a Scheme dialect or on Common Lisp my CMS admin will suck your whatever you have. Dude seems to be pretty good at it, we are trying to keep him from pulling tricks on the street but he insists.

Then add a React client with Typescript to get them basic ass endpoints to display nicely.

It should give you a fuckload of perspective amongst the different tools and way we do things and might make you appreciate the differences in paradigms required(pro points for doing modular in c# dotnetcore using different classlibs for the major points of the application using some crazy pattern like the mediator pattern)

I would hire a mfker that throws all this shit at me on a portfolio on the spot.

Some of you know I'm an amateur programmer (ok, you all do). But recently I decided I'm gonna go for a career in it.

I thought projects to demo what I know were important, but everything I've seen so far says otherwise. Seems like the most important thing to hiring managers is knowing how to solve small, arbitrary problems. Specifics can be learned and a lot of 'requirements' are actually optional to scare off wannabes and tryhards looking for a sweet paycheck.

So I've gone back, dusted off all the areas where I'm rusty (curse you regex!), and am relearning, properly. Flash cards and all. Getting the essentials committed to memory, instead of fumbling through, and having to look at docs every five minutes to remember how to do something because I switch languages, frameworks, and tooling so often. Really committing toward one set of technologies and drilling the fundamentals.

Would you say this is the correct approach to gaining a position in 2020, for a junior dev?
I know for a long time, 'entry level' positions didn't really exist, but from what I'm hearing around the net, thats changing.

Heres what I'm learning (or relearning since I've used em only occasionally):

* Git (small personal projects, only used it a few times)
* SQL
* Backend (Flask, Django)
* Frontend (React)
* Testing with Cypress or Jest

Any of you have further recommendations?

Gulp? Grunt? Are these considered 'matter of course' (simply expected), or learn-as-you for a beginner like myself?

Is knowing the agile 'manifesto' (whatever that means) by heart really considered a big deal?

What about the basics of BDD and XP?

Is knowing how to properly write user-stories worth a damn or considered a waste of time to managers?

Am I going to be tested on obscure minutiae like little-used yarn/npm commands?

Would it be considered a bonus to have all the various HTTP codes memorized? I mean thats probably a great idea, but is that an absolute requirement for newbies, or something you learn as you practice?

During interviews, is there an emphasis on speed or correctness? I'm nitpicky, like to write cleanly commented code, and prefer to have documentation open at all times.
Am I going to, eh, 'lose points' for relying on documentation during an interview?

I'm an average programmer on my good days, and the only thing I really have going for me is a *weird* combination of ADD and autism-like focus that basically neutralize each other. The only other skill I have is talking at people's own level to gauge what they need and understand. Unfortunately, and contrary to the grifter persona I present for lulz, I hate selling, let alone grifting.
Otherwise I would have enjoyed telemarketing way more and wouldn't even be asking this question. But thankfully I escaped that hell and am now here, asking for your timeless nuggets of bitter wisdom.

What are truly *entry level* web developers *expected* to know, *right out the gate*, obviously besides the language they're using?

Also, what is the language they use to program websites? It's like java right? I need to know. I'm in an interview RIGHT now and they left me alone with a PC for 30 minutes. I've been surfing pornhub for the last 25 minutes. I figure the answer should take about 5 minutes, could you help me out and copypasta it?

Okay, okay, I'm kidding, I couldn't help myself. The rest of the questions are serious and I'd love to know what your opinions are on what is important for web developers in 2020, especially entry level developers.

Stop shoving Django admin down everyones throat as a client facing solution every time we need any admin functionality.

It’s great at first but then you have to dick around customising it when you could build the same thing with any modern frontend framework and REST API easily.

Not to mention Django admin couples the models to the view it provides you (inlining particular models given their relationships)

Im having a sort of dilema. I recently started taking freelance work for web developement (and design ack) and Im uncomfortable with the state of the industry. Ill explain: Say if I bid a client for a simple 1-3 page site w contact form (a new page, not migration) My suggestion is to use djangocms, django, or just static html/css/js (ie bootstrap), which produces clean, fairly secure, and fast sites. Of course I can throw a templated unoriginal wordpress site together in a few hours 2 days latest, so I offer that option as a sidenote on the bid, charging almost 2x more. For some reason I dont understand they choose the wp shitshow. I explain all the reasons that not the way to go( which I wont list, if u dont know, u never used it. google up) but they dont care abt the details, they rather pay more for shit job. OFC I reluctantly deliver what they want, but as a result my portfolio is full of unoriginal shit Im not happy showing off. I have a few sites Ive done on the side my prefered way, but they not deployed and sit in my github for all intents n purposes unviewable to potential clients.
I want to be proud of my portfolio, and it to be a representation of what Im capable of. BUT, I gotta eat, and work is better than no work.

There are so many "wordpress designers" oversaturaring the field and it lowering the overall standard of what we are capable of. I just begining my dev journey, but if I cant have a body of work Im proud of, theres no way I can see doing this the rest of my life, and that makes me really sad. My love of developing, coding, and IT/computers in general drove me to change careers from audio engineering to web development, and the fact that this fucking mr. potatoe head of a CMS is slowly turning that love into hate really pisses me off. So Im ending this !rant looking for hope.

So I'm a fullstack Python Dev & I wanted to learn Django Rest Framework so I can ease into making PWA. I figured let me learn it as I build out an MVP for a web app I'm creating...WRONG! This shit is mega annoying! It's taken much much more time than i'd like just to set up User sign up and sign in using a form based on the serializers. I started this project Friday....I still have no forms 😭😭...If i just had used Regular Django Models/Forms, an Ajax call here and there i wouldve been done!! What makes it worse is I feel I'm legit the only person having these issues...sheesh

I almost looked for every possible source but is not satisfied or not found optimum way or path.

Actually i have to build a netflix clone (not exactly but a video on demand platform for one local client). The tech stack will be React at the frontend and DRF (Django Rest Framework) at the backend.

I know the node will match my purpose at best, but this needs to be done on DRF. How should I return the video, should I return it in bytes, packets and what can sample code look like, how frontend should fetch it. It will really help if you put your insight, in general. Thank you

While working with Django Rest Framework, the Post and Delete requests were giving me 403 error. With no help from stack overflow, I decided in vain to check it with Firefox browser instead of Chrome.

So I made a rant about an hour or so ago about Django Rest Framework....this rant is about my own stupidity...Why didn't I just FULLY watch tutorial videos? The same videos I quickly blasted through like Haribo Sugar Free Gummy Bears blasts through your intestines are the same videos that are providing the answers I needed.

What the differences in performance between Django REST, expressjs, spring boot and Flask. What of these frameworks recommend for an API for quickly development and hosting with a $5 -$10 droplet.

I've been trying to make this work for at least 1 hour. If I use Postman, it works alright, but using axios messes it up.

Practically what happens it's that Django does not picks the foreign keys, it loads all the fields except those two.

Currently working (trying to) with Angular 2.
Spent lots of time trying to make angular work because ng needs arrays instead of objects when I finally realized it was a matter of the API.

So, I've been working on a few Django projects at my company & we've been handling it quite well up until now. For those who don't have an idea of Django, it uses templating format as it's frontend & the data is served using APIs or context'.

Now the problem is, we're been told to use React js at the fronted with the current working projects.I've even gone to the 5th page of google & still haven't found a useful blog/answer on how to use react with django (i know that django rest framework will serve the apis).

There's no clear documentation for this. Even if there is, it's only basics which isn't quite helpful in my case.

So anybody can please guide me through or even provide a syntactical way to get this done, I'd be really grateful.
