Update on my shitty manager.
He's been in HR training and leaving me the fuck alone. So it's a win so far.7 -
Got moved to higher prio project
- disastrous security
- Built with Knockout.js in 2016
- entire folders of business logic duplicated 3 times to allow for the business requirements of separate regional branches to evolve independently
- Application server in ASP.NET Core MVC but the *real* backend is a WCF service
- there is an outstanding ticket for a list view that fails to load because the API response exceeds the .NET serializer's maximum length. The proposed solution is to stream it down to the client which then collects it into a JS array and renders a DOM node for all 6k rows
- mgmt wants to scale up to the entire European region, not with a single installation but still with a single codebase
- the Germans want interactivity with Relay
- prod database copied around and cleaned to establish new environments, migrations lost to time
- read-only queries have a tendency to deadlock18 -
What the actual fuck is this?
And you're meant to hang it on your Christmas tree?
What is wrong with people?10 -
"You can't argue with the TV"
This statement is true when engaging with people online. The TV has told them what to think. Sometimes it takes a jarring moment to shake someone out of this trance. For some nothing will break the programming.
I can tell when someone isn't thinking for themselves. They repeat the standard media terms, and then use those terms to dehumanize people. They can then dismiss any counter information as being from "those people".
I assume this is some kind of protection mechanism. I suspect people are afraid of being wrong and their ego won't allow this. So the conclusion seems to be: people who don't believe the TV "must" have character faults. Some even have fantasies of harming those who don't agree. I have witnessed this a few times with a few different people. It would be sad to live like that. I don't understand or comprehend that kind of hate. I can only suspect this comes from the TV content. I don't know because I haven't watched it in almost 15 years.
The AP is a trillion dollar propaganda machine. If you can see through its facade count yourself lucky.
Pray for people to wake up. Remember you can't argue with the TV. Just move on.
On a side note. Viewership of traditional AP media is now in the toilet. So I hope that is progress.9 -
And here we go, at least tell me outright that you want to farm data on how dry you can milk my cluster of personas, assholes...4

Every ticket I work on involves some nebulous, undocumented BS nobody can satisfactorily explain. And worse, even if it’s something I’ve already worked with before, it’s almost invariably different from the last time I saw it, so it’s still nebulous BS. It’s like I’m walking through Steven King’s Mist, except the bugs are more metaphorical.
Everything is spec’d out, except for the views, and half of the logic. But the rest is still technically covered because tests indirectly call the code, so that means it won’t crash right? 😅 Also, the tests that are there are also fucking nebulous, such as calling helper methods that are heavily abstracted, or that are written to test completely different things but kinda sorta work for this too if you set things up just right.
I’m going insane.3 -
"Posting is currently turned off for this type of place," so that photo of an oil rig off the coast of Tabasco will forever shape people's first impression of the Gulf of Mexico that US citizens are now supposed to call Gulf of America.20

Google Assistant got replaced by Gemini on my phone. What used to work before, me saying "Hey Google, set an alarm for 5 pm" doesn't work anymore.
"I am only a language model so I can't help you with that" is the default response.
Does big tech not like the idea of things working fine and smooth?38 -

TeamLeader2: Mister IHateForALiving, client is reporting a bug, we need you to check out what is happening
IHateForALiving: I'm on it, anything I should know before I start?
TeamLeader2: just check the logs, they should tell you pretty much everything you need to know
The logs:5 -
is there some trendy definition for "keyboard pattern" that im unaware of?
seriously though... while not always current on whatever scammer\phisher\wannabe hackers\etc are doing... im still one hell of a, beyond capable, cyber security pro... mainly cuz I've been networking professionally since half-duplex existed, know, and thoroughly enjoy data architectures, encryption and things like hardware drivers and low level systems down to the literal, physical\mechanical and digital bits...
basically,i have a rare viewpoint in comprehension; I'm used to nonsensical tactics being enforced as if they were actually valid (basically everything other than a min length (~6+) and *don't use basic words found in a pocket dictionary* is typically a double edged sword).
so wtf do they mean? i mean, technically, everything typed can be a keyboard pattern... itd be like how people say "vps" when they are talking about a proxy.23 -
When negotiating salary do you ask for the max in the range they provide? If not what’s the best strategy8
