Haha, today I learnt that agile doesn't just stop in the enterprise with SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), management has continued the theme in my new company with Lean-Agile Center of Excellence (LACE) and Agile Release Trains (ARTs).

That moment you get the satisfaction of deleting 2468 lines of legacy code.

Just started a new job as a software developer, even though I basically applied as an embedded software developer. I knew from the interview there was gonna be alot of legacy / high level stuff and they were pushing me away from embedded with the promise I could do it 'later on'.

Finally started and it turns out there's a shit tonne of legacy Python code for their non-existent test framework that's basically tied directly into a Qt GUI app and I'm doing shit that nobody else wants to do. Can't see myself wanting to do this for anywhere more than 2-3 months. Should I just bail now? Seems a bit dodgy if I leave having only worked there for a week? Job actually pays really well though.

Plan was to take an extended vacation around July/August, so quitting this early and then telling another employer later on that I need to bail for summer seems wrong also, not to mention COVID sucks and is making everything hell now.

Project Manager: Reckon we can get a demo/status update tomorrow?

Friday:

Project Manager: Alright great

Monday 1pm:
*basically a shit tonne of noise all morning, can't get anything done*
Project Manager: Reckon we can get a status update right now?

Me: Uh...
Project Manager: Ok, let's aim for a demo anyway.
Research Lead: Great!

Org Lead: How is everything going?
Me: I don't like how Project Manager micromanages.
Org Lead: Ahhh, yes, but it was me that asked him to manage like this

In the beginning I created a CLI script to manage some production tests of our embedded product. Then they wanted a GUI with a single textbox and button. Then they wanted a shortcut on the desktop to that GUI.

Now one guy I know in 'production' insists that I keep adding to the documentation for things outside the scope of the software and more towards what will be sent to other production workers. Some of which includes 'ensure the cables are plugged in'. He says that he and other production workers are dumb and need a bulletproof guide. Fair enough, I say...maybe get a brain also?

New guy taking over senior software developer since the last one seemed to burn out / got tired of all the bullshit. His coming replacement has a habit of making 'software walkthroughs' for every repository we have. The project organization is so badly managed and we only ever work on requirements when we have something concrete. After Outlook-declining one of the walkthroughs I get this little gem from him in an IM:

Guy: <Old Snr Dev> felt that you built the base for it and it would be good if you are there as you might take it forward is what <Manager> told me

Me: yeh but it is like so straightforward
and basically there are other projects on github which do the exact same thing

Guy: okay, just that I have not seen the code yet. Or anyone else to take it forward

Me: i think - go through it when you need to
if there are problems, then ask

WTF? You didn't even check it yourself and you want me to handhold you as a senior software developer? Totally nuts.

It feels like I cannot take it anymore, waking up to goto work at 9 feels unbearable for a hacker. My mind doesn't work and it's routine as fuck. How do you guys do it?
