Watching normal people use a computer is incredibly painful.
* slow typing
* slow mouse movements
* mouse is used for everything
* instead of hitting the back button, they'll load up a website and go through 6 pages again.
* no shortcuts!
Someone lost their tabs today (Windows crashed), so I said "press ctrl + shift + T". They were so amazed that keys could do something so advanced.
Dhcosncowhtoehwurt hrnxkxxhry he.
Honestly, if people learned how to use keyboards to their full potential, they could shave off 1-2 hours of their normal work PER DAY!23
So I was spending Christmas at my girlfriend's house with her family. One morning we hear her grandad talking on the phone and we ask him who it is. He says that someone called him, saying that they're Cox tech support and need remote access to his PC. Naturally, we all freak out and ask what he's told them. He gives us a look and says "Nothing, I'm not a bloody moron. I've been wondering how people steal data these days, and this seemed like an opportunity to figure it out." The guy used to work for the British gov't as an industrial/chemical engineer back when computers used punch cards and he's still got it.5
I love listening to music and reading on the train every morning. On my way to the station, I get a text, "DUDE. ***** committed suicide."
He was a good friends of ours from high school. I remember once he got a few of us to go caving on homecoming since none of us had dates. He'd never finish a candy bar; would give half of everything away. He once drove out to California to try to start over; lasted three days and came home, but through a girl he met he was in Hawaii for a year.
He lived a lot of life, and he had a heart of gold.
I didn't get out my ebook on my phone. I didn't even put my headphones in.
I had lost another close friend from University while I was overseas. I remember being in the city art gallery when I got the news. I walked right out to the harbor, fell to my knees and cried. I always thought one day I'd be home and could shoot the shit with my old roommate. Now he was gone, and the only thing I had from him was a text from 10 days before saying, "I haven't been doing too well, but thanks for asking."
I'm back in another software engineering job, on the train to an 8-to-5, shakin it for the money. I couldn't read on the commute. I just looked out that window as the train car descended into the subway, and thought to myself, "What am I even doing anyway?"
I'm in my mid-30s; too young to be losing people like this.
I'm sorry man. I wish we had caught up sooner. I wish you weren't gone, but I know you're at peace.29
Biggest hurdle: torn between having boobs and missing an arm. I swear some people are under the assumption the brain is in the arm.
I am fully capable of building your network, resolving your outage due to your faulty code, can even tell you how many users your database can support at once. I don't need arms for that. Nor do my boobs distract me that badly.
"but men are going to make your life so hard" yup. And that's true no matter where i go
"all that typing with one arm can't be good for your back" welp. Find me a job that doesn't require a computer. Or manual labor. If you think typing will fuck me up, that's DEFINITELY out of the equation
"you're too pretty, there's no way this can make sense" dafuq you just say?!?!
"why don't you just stay home on disability, I'm sure you qualify, you wouldn't need to work" I'd rather be a fucking trophy wife if I'm staying at home. Fuck that.
And many more.
Sometimes they're fun. Give me more dumb arguments to counter? ;)57
Please be gentle, first rant here.
I'm a hobby .NET Developer, so nothing serious, but when a "close" friend asked me if i could help him, i saw my opportunity to show my skills.
Said "close" friend is working for a non profit agency and deals with a lot of people, so he asked for a database with some extras. The task was fairly easy and i needed 2 weeks (besides my real Job), to get what he wants.
The big day comes and I show him my work. He was very pleased with it, and also I did it for free, he paid me actually really good money for it. I designed that DB as idiot proof as possible, but i should have known better.
2 month went by without a single crash or any other Problems, but yesterday i received a call..
Him: Your Update broke everything!! fix it asap!!
Me: What happend, I did not push an update for 2 month.
Him: You A**hole, its all your fault!!
After like 5 mins of swearing, I agreed to come over and have a look.
Oh boii, you would'nt believe how stupid some people can be..
Let me tell you, he got 2 files "ProgrammName.exe" and "ProgrammName_Database" and this idiot of a Person thought "hmm my PC ist getting kinda slow, let me delete some junk, so he goes ahead and deletes the whole Database and calls me stupid names, because he lost all his data, and no, MR.I GOT 20 TOOL-BARS INSTALLED AND I DELETE SOME JUNK ASS FILES, I DONT HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR STUFF!!
So now you know why i called him "close" friend..19
Google searching should be a school subject. There is so much people that dont know how to use it13
I'm tired of working for small companies.
I'm always either the sole developer, or the only dev for a specific stack, and therefore don't have anyone to ask for help. If I can't figure something out, it just doesn't get done.
It also means I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off, do code reviews with, or even friggin' have someone who understands what I do.
It would be nice to have someone I could actually ask for help! As it stands, I tear my hair out in frustration until I'm desperate enough to beg for help on discord or SO. whereupon, of course, I get ignored, as per usu. asdjfklasdjf
It really sucks.
It also means that I'm often surrounded entirely by sales people and managers... you know, those super-talkative people? who basically get paid just to talk? and are absolutely computer illiterate? Yeah. Think someone who says "I need my deliverables by end-of-week," "customer success representative," "turnkey solution," etc. completely seriously. (ew).
They're the people who constantly wonder why I can't push `n` features in `n/4` days, and ofc can't understand anything I say in response because of the aforementioned illiteracy. They're also the people who, almost every week, ask how long `y` is going to take, and then yell "But I need it by Friday! I just sold 50 clients on it!" (And they do this, of course, without ever asking for timelines)
It really fucking sucks.
Though I suppose larger companies would still have these problems.
but at least I could ask for help once in awhile. that would be nice.43
Honestly if the StackOverflow community was set on fire and I had a huge tank of water
People in Africa wouldn't die from thrist anymore.18
Me: you asked for this functionality and the library is very good for that
Boss: here at our company we do not use code from other people, we write everything ourselves
Me: but this library is very well built, actively developed and supported
Boss: I don't care, please rewrite this component
Suffice to say, I quit that job asap. Whoever thinks it's a good idea write so much code for a small purpose in an application when there is something available open source to use, is stupid. In most cases it's better to use something which is out there than to waste time writing a hardly stable version of it.24
When people say: "All you do is sit in front of your PC doing stuff. Get a life"
Me: This is my life!5
I have this old lady that I help from time to time with her computer issues.
She is nice, so I feel compelled to help her.
Get a call one day.
Lady : "hello, my internet and email isn't working, I've tried everything, could you maybe help me?"
Me : "Sure, ill come over after work and check it out"
*arrive at her house*
Lady : "you see, none of the web pages load, and my email refuses to sync. Should I call (insert isp name), or can you fix it?"
Me : I'm sure I can get it, gimme a sec.
*find the issue in a sec or two, dunno how to tell her about it, she isn't totally stupid*
Me : "Uhh, I don't know if you checked, but the ether.. internet cable isn't plugged in"
Lady : *realizes the wtf moment I'm having, obviously feeling very stupid*
Me : "Don't worry, happens to the best of us"
Obviously I lied a little, most of us would probably check the damn cable. Sometimes is just better to make people not feel like its their fault. People learn better when they don't feel like something is making a fool of them.
I have helped this lady with so many things that are just straight out of this world.
The one time she tried emailing 37mb tiff files over her 315kbps network.
Another time she said her email was not syncing, so I went to her house and clicked the "sync" button.
She even once phoned me to get their wifi password.
I just like helping her, somehow it makes me feel as if we all have something to learn.6
Two types of people in this world.
Those who press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
Those who press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click on Task Manager.20
For a really long time I said to myself that this is too basic to rant about but lately it became so frequent and extreme that here is my rant about completely clueless users that ask me IT related questions.
Disclaimer: Said users are people that I generally can't avoid. Distant family members, neighbors and etc.
U: I don't know what's happening!! The computer doesn't work!!
M: What do you mean?
U: There's no Facebook! And everything is stuck and no messenger!!!
M: The WiFi on your laptop was off. I turned it on. Still, this doesn't mean that the pc wasn't working.
U: I don't understand this shit!!!
U: I hate this computer!!! It never works!!! Help meeee!!!
M: What now?
U: Where did the internet disappear?!
M: (assuming it's wifi or browser related)
Actually user moved the Chrome window to bottom-right corner and lost it.
Every time I try to show the user how I resolve the issue the user yells that there are too many steps, that they are complicated and that I'm a bad teacher and doing it too fast.
U: My computer is so slow! It barely can load google translate! And I can't listen to music on youtube!! Shitty laptop! It's you! Your computers in the apartment drain everything!!!
M: You have no idea what you are talking about.
U: My husband told me that your computers are heavy and drain everything!
M: What exactly did he tell you that my devices drain?
U: I don't know! All the energy! I believe him! He knows!
M: My computers drain less electricity than your vacuum and I have a separate internet connection. Not only we share nothing but also I drain nothing.
U: Since you appeared all the computers are slow!!!!
U: I don't understand, where is my whatsapp?
M: You can't locate the app on your phone?
U: Yes! F*ck, help me! I'm so angry and I really need this NOW!!!
M: Shut up. I'm already here and helping.
(I open users phone and whatsapp is the active app...)
U: I can' t find my whatsapp with Clara!
F*ck you! F*ck you! Ghckjfshij!!!
(crazy hitting on my door)
U: I don't have THE internet!!!
It's you again! You took all of THE internet!!!
M: No, it doesn't work like that. Your provider is bad, your package is cheap and your cables are of low quality.
U: I need THE internet immediately!!! Stop playing with your typing and fix the facebook or I'll cut the power cables to the house!!
I can go on, just don't think that recalling all those events is healthy for me.20
There are times when being "friendly neighbor it guy" pays back.
I have a neighbors, their son is little less intelligent than average person after being injured in accident, I help them from time to time. He gets the pc trashed with adware, usual stuff, they ask me to clean it up.
Recently I broke my arm. They offered to cook for me until I recover to full health... Seriously, that's huge help when you live alone and spend most time working. I'm glad to have them.
Wanted to share with you guys, there are people who appreciate your help with their pc and can give back if you're in need.4
Am I the only one who hates people who just use their phone speakers in public? I mean when they play a game or listen to music in a bus... Is it that difficult to plug your headphones in? Because of you 30+ people have to suffer because only 1-2 actually like the stuff you play... Honestly should be a law to not use phone speakers in public without surrounding approval..11
At job interview.
Interviewer: Have you ever thought about why manhole covers are round?
Me: It's to accommodate different body shapes of sewer workers.
Interviewer: Hahah. It's actually so the covers wouldn't fall in.
Me: It used to be like that, but they changed it.
Interviewer: What? Who changed it?
Me: The lizard people!
Me: * cowers in corner and hisses *7
In my previous company, I used to work for a client company which had a terrible website. It was about financial data and people would have to wait too long before the page loaded because there was a freaking 1.2 megs of minified, compressed JS file that needed to load before you could do anything.
Everyone knew that was a pain in the ass and nobody wanted to touch spaghetti code and mess up something they didn't know.
I wanted to however take a shot at it. So an architect from client side and I discussed how we were gonna go about it and how we were gonna find the stuff that needed to load on page load and stuff that could be loaded later.
So we plan for it. We broke everything down from a globals polluting JS, found out the variables and functions that needed to run during first load by literally putting a console statement for each function and finally came up with two bundles.
The primary bundle was 120kb and would during first load and then every module would call it's own secondary bundle when the user interacted with it.
In the process, we removed half a meg of JS and the site became blazing fast.
I did it with a team of two members who, my manager thought were useless, learned a ton of stuff, setup proper process for the transition.
When the client didn't appreciate the amount of brain and effort we had put into it, these two members came forward to tell the client to acknowledge my effort and attributed the success of it to me.
I was totally moved. There was so much respect that I didnt care what anybody else thought. I was just so happy to work with those two humans.
When i left the company, i gifted them stuff they always talked about or wanted. :) Feels good.2
Mouse pads are for poor people. Rich and genuine developers always use laptops.

Normal people post selfies on Instagram and get comments like "omg so sexy 😘"
Developers post stuff like this in devRant and get comments like "omg so sexy 😎":4
So a guy wants to start a company with me. He wants to be CEO 👨💼 I'm fine with it but now he also wants me to obey every one of his orders such as attend long unplanned meetings, go do market research, code the app and for what, a mere 5%. He gets a bigger cut of the income because he came up with the idea 💡, he also gets to sit and order me around because he's read a few books on business and economics. People don't seem to understand the difference between having an idea and implementation. I just left and said no to every offer he had the highest of which was 10%, don't be worried about the money he says this is a real opportunity for you. I mean wtf is wrong with some people.14
A moment of respect to people who willingly spend time to help out other people on sites such as StackOverflow10
I like how when you put a device in "Developer Mode", it doesn't complain anymore and lets you do (almost) whatever you want.
I wish there was a "Developer Mode" in society.
Neighbor1:"He's 25 and he has no proper job yet"
Neighbor2:"Oh, he's on developer mode".
Random Street Guy1:"Look at her clothes. Kids these days don't have any values".
Random Street Guy2:"Oh, she's on developer mode".
Random Street Guy1:"Ah, Okay."6
So yeah, the name change is done. Me making a joke out of being called a code slut clearly backfired and people just started calling me a slut or inferring I was a slut or something unsavory because of an online username. Lesson learned. A few lessons, in fact.
Anyway thanks for allowing the name change @dfox and @trogus. Now, back to ranting.43
Intelligence and ability cannot be measured by education.
I have a client who asked a Master in Computer Science to develop a small system, for querying product title and their code. The guy used python, vanilla js, and... Txt file for the "database". Then my client asked me to integrated this in... WordPress.
This was in 2016. And idiot as I'm, I agreed and adapted his code to use php and a database.
April this year, my client said they are still using the python system to add new products all this time, in parallel. And wanted to update the WordPress with the data.
- No problem! - I said. Just send me the SQL file.
So the Master in CS sent me a SQL coded in ANSI. I asked for the SQL again, but with a more appropriate encoding. He took 1 month to reply back, and said it would be better if I get rid of the database and just use the txt file for querying.
This is outrageous.
I really hate people who are educated but completely useless.4
Me, a 19 year old student at a meeting with a "potential new project" today:
Her: So, we would like a website where people could rent a conference room, and pay for it on the website. After they have paid, we want automated emails to go out to us and the person that rents the room. We basically want an automated rental system.
Me: Sounds fair, what kind of budget do you have in mind?
Her: Well because you are a student and you still live at home, we have a budget of about €200 (~$220). We thought it'd be fair because you don't really need an income yet.
At that point I slowly tried to fade away from the meeting... Please help me 😭22
-non programmer- friend sees me programming..
"Omg are you hacking?!"
I think it's because of the dark theme.. 🤔😂
I'm reading "rants" and comments here for a few days now and I have to say, I'm loving all the positivity and generally nice people. devRant rules :D2
I find coding is the best way to alleviate boredom on a plane.
Not because I enjoy coding that much, but because there are two types of people:
1) Those who know what programming is and who will ALWAYS ask about it interested. (Conversation starter)
2) Those who don't know what it is and just assume you're hacking the plane!4
I think one difficult thing about being a developer is having all your business friends tell you they have this idea that would make millions but you have to build a prototype (for free) for them to pitch. They don't seem to understand that this is a full time job.12
What follows isn't dev related and began as a comment on one of @AlexDeLarge's rants, and quicly became a full fleged story deserving it's own rant.
Oh God, drunk people are the worst and my gf is awesome.
I live with her in a street that never sleeps. Hardly anybody lives there, actually. That's just bars and night clubs, so during evening and at night, it's very crowded and noisy (luckily we have good noise insulation).
When we get back home late, there is always people standing in front of our door, looking at you like you just shat on their already puke and urine covered feet, just because you try to make them move to use your key.
Then I make sure my lady goes first, so I can check that nobody tries to go inside after me. The boys and girls standing there, watch us then, astonished, like you're some kind of homophobic gay or antisemitic jew, then ask, with a half smile and their eyes blank from any intelligence : "Isn't it hard living here?" (or, sometimes, "Hey dude, can I enter with you? Lol". Everytime I just refrain myself from answering "Yeah, the worst is people the like of you."
It happens exactly like this EVERY.FUCKING.TIME.
I'm not against getting drunk, I do myself sometimes (though that rarely on purpose). But please don't make me hate you for it.
One day we got back after a long party. My gf was merry and I was dead drunk because it bored me so I just drank glasses after another. I remember half of the night, and she told me the next day that I tried to buy a kebab with laundry and beer tickets (also a pants button), and really didn't see what was wrong in this. I can agree with drunk me here : you give a kebab, you get free beers and can go wash your clothes. Win-win!
Anyway, when we made it back to our front door, there was as usual people in front of it. Mainly manly man lesbians with some overweight problems. So she asks "Please could you move a little, we'd like to enter and my boyfriend here feels sick". A plain old 'no' was their answer. So from the top of my drunk wise, I declared "Go away or I'm puking over you, dumb bitches". They didn't like this. They began hitting us.
Everything is blurry from there, but I think some guys came to help them hit me, while they focused on my gf. I was mainly on the floor, taking hits after hits, waiting for them to stop because it was really annoying being punched in front of your door and pissed off that I was in no position to help her. Luckily for her, she can defend herself. The lesbians were just pulling her hair and scratching, so she gave them a few good hits in the belly and they let her go enough time to grab me in the middle of the boys (a friend of us helped her grab me as well, though he managed to stay out of the fight). When I took my key in my pockets, they stopped because they thought it was a Swiss knife (because my keys are arranged like one to take less space). I just went like "Guys, you dumb fucks, that's a key. A keeeeeey", before proceeding to put the wrong one in the lock and breaking it inside.
I don't know how, but the gf, with her long nails, managed to get it out in no time and used the right key afterwards. We were home and alive.
I was really proud of her that day, but also a bit ashamed to have just been a victim and a dead weight. To this day I never drink more than a beer or two during parties, in case I'd have to fight or run on the way back. Also, when she gets out to party with friends, she always phones me to fetch her when she's done, because there are cases of harassment and sometimes rape when a girl is alone late in these streets.
I really don't like a lot of people, but these braindead stupid fucktard make things really, really worse. One day there will be some bomb dropping from my window and these waste of carbon atoms and ethanol molecules won't understand anything that happens to them.15
Story time :
Sometime ago I posted a video on YouTube on how to root a particular phone that was lying around at home. I was trying to demonstrate one of those "one-tap root" apps that were plentiful in the market. It so happened that one specific version of Framaroot and one particular method of exploit works for that device. I even verified this by trying different versions and it didn't work. So in the description it was mentioned to use ONLY this version that worked. Few days later there were atleast 5 dislikes and comments that it didn't work on some other version.
That's how I understood how stupid and dumb people can get.7
Things you can enjoy when working in an office with other people:
- listening to everyone chew gum with their mouths open.
- being constantly interrupted by coworkers asking for help, even when wearing headphones.
- getting distracted by someone bursting out in laughter of some private joke.
- having to take a break when everyone else does, because everyone is so loud you just can't focus.
- being hit on the back of the neck by a nerf gun bullet, right when you're most focused.
Why would anyone ever want to work at home?10
*fortunes and tons of research spent on machine learning, signal processing and pattern recognition*
Someone went to HR complaining about never getting a lunch... We're told to work them out amongst ourselves and cover, but he's never once asked us to cover.
So now we HAVE to take lunch and we HAVE to make up that time by staying late or coming in early.
There are days when I'm on a roll and I don't WANT to stop to take lunch. It fucks with my rhythm and I end up breaking shit. We're all adults, why the fuck can't people act like it?8
I met a guy on facebook group, where was post asking how to make easy platformer game in a week. And I tried to explain post author how to start. Everything was good untill this guy came in. He commented my comment "Yoo you are wrong, he can learn it in one day". My comment was about starting with unity and programming, and that need time to learn (without copying tutorial, everything made by himself). So I started to gently explaining him why it is unachivable in 1 day. Of course his respond was like "Omg you are so fooking stupid, It's sooo easyyy" this conversarion took good 15 minutes, and I ended it with "Ok, you are right" just to end thid. I hate people like that.5
"ThE FIrsT ThiNg a Pr0GraMmer saYs whEn hE iZ b0Rn iZ HELlo w0Rld"
Damn, that is
I wonder. Do the people that find this shit amusing are just discovering what programming is? Shit is so fucking cringey man.22
New to this but here's my rant I suppose. It bothers me how "non-tech" people kind of devalue what tech people do. Like they have zero understanding of it, so you make something in 30 minutes or an hour that took years of building said skills and involved complex logic and understanding of relational data and because it only took you 30 minutes or an hour it must have been "easy". Or the way you are everybody's free tech advisor with family and friends... And things are said like "I'm not good with this stuff, but you're so good with it". For the record nobody is just "great" at technology or coding from birth its been a 2+ decade craft that I've experimented with and learned and put effort into. So taking into consideration all this effort I have put in to understand all this you say you'll never remember to push that button so you'll just ask me again when the problem arises. Yes because its so fun for me to constantly maintain your electronics because you can't bother to remember to push a button.5
People who use smartphones with brightness set to 100% and no blue light filter on a dark bus at night with the display (7+ inches ofc) in the direction of your eyes... thanks, now I’m blind.9
"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3
Honestly? People. For the first two years of my career I worked for an investment bank.. Basically working to make rich people richer. That, plus the technology sucked, made me change what I do.
I now work for a company that, while it doesn't cure cancer, it makes products that my friends use, my family uses, even my 1 year old son uses. And knowing I am making a difference in their life in even just a little way is worth it.
Also now that I have a family and a kid, my priorities have shifted and as much as I love coding, my family and kid will always come first now. Could I be making more at an investment bank where I worked 12 hour shifts every day? Sure. But it's not worth it to me.3
People I see all day on devRant

how people count
normal people: 1 2 3 4 5 6....

them: wtf u doing, 0 is not included8
Fuck you StackOverflow! Why do you ban people who have a positive score? Shit, I'm raging right now. I have a positive fucking score! It is not because I asked a few questions that were not well received by your fucking elitist overrated frustrated community that I should be banned!
And fuck off I'm not a native english speaker, it is OBVIOUS that I won't be able to make perfect sentence in all contexts.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK20
I love stackoverflow!
1. Developer who knows SO, and loves it : Yeah, my friend!
2. Developer who knows SO, but hates it : Go home, you're drunk.
3. Normal people who doesn't know the dev world : Why would you like a stack to overflow?
4. Normal people who is a tech savvy : Ah, the place where people share their questions and answers to make a better software and to be together? I never used it, but I heard it is awesome!
5. Idiots : What is that?
6. Grammarly : Recommended word is "stack overflow"
7. Dishwasher : Fatal error!6
Call me old-fashioned, but... I kinda liked it back in the day, when Microsoft made proprietary software, the Community made free software and everyone's "cui bono" was quite easy to answer - even those corporations involved in FLOSS did have a clear way to finance themselves.
Now, we have Microsoft coming into open source, seemingly making projects better and offering more and more "free" stuff.
"Free" Windows 10.
"Free" SaaS Office.
"Free" "Private" Repos on Github.
In general - what happened to clear and concise "I give you money, you give me stuff" capitalism like we had it in the 2000s?
I'd rather pay 20 bucks for a game on Steam than get it "free" and with ads or microtransactions - yet, many games, especially mobile, don't even offer me that option. It wouldn't be that hard now, would it?
The same goes for software. That Canonical would need to fuck their users over after Ubuntu One went to shit was obvious - they didn't offer the kind of commercial/enterprise OS'es that Redhat or SuSE sell.
What people seem to forget is that everyone needs to make a profit somehow. You don't get "free" stuff. Even the volunteers in the Open Source Community get something out of it - an opportunity to pad their CV at least, if nothing else.
Nowadays, software manufacturers have the same legitimacy as the "free" financial "advisors" you find at banks - and who could be dumb enough to trust them? Oh yeah: Almost the entire fucking society is who.
But then again, sell something and noone will want it - because they all want it for free, with annoying, privacy-invading ads or with equally annoying microtransactions, or financing based on commission - so you don't only pay ONCE, you pay until you realize you got fucked over and quit.
Capitalism used to work until all those idiots stepped in. How the fuck don't people realize that there's no free lunch in life? When have we stopped being functional people and turned into idiots.
Even worse: Those idiots think that they're entitled to something! They, who volunteered to become merchandise instead of customers, think that they have rights! Do cattle have rights? Nope. They get their "free" hay everyday and I get to buy beef, that's how it works. Moo!
Hell, they are surprised when they get fucked over by bank salespeople or their data stolen by corporations, intelligence agencies or something... What did they expect, goodwill?
Can we please make Adam Smith mandatory reading in school?! I mean, give people a chance to understand capitalism? The nonexistent "goodwill" of traders in general?9
I built a tracking suite for our fleet of printers quite some time ago. Once a day, "bizteam" (aka sales) gets an alert detailing how many printers are in critical need of attention (out of paper, mechanical error, etc.), and how many of them are flat-out offline. They don't seem to care. I mean they do, I think? but. the offline percentage hasn't changed much in the past month or two.
These printers constitute a primary part of our business model and... screw it. they're goddamn important, okay?
A full 16% of our printers are OFFLINE. Most of those HAVE BEEN OFFLINE FOR 3 FUCKING MONTHS.
3% of our printers have been online BUT OUT OF PAPER FOR OVER A MONTH.
and what really baffles me...
We've convinced a few of these merchants to actually plug in their goddamn printers. (and yes, they actually *paid* for these things, and they're absolutely not cheap.) Some of those were previously both offline AND out of paper, yet after being plugged in, they're *STILL* OUT OF PAPER?! What the crap, people! It's a printer! it's not difficult! It's the same as every other fucking printer you have! and it's probably the same goddamn fucking model!
Did AlexDeLarge skullfuck your brain into mush? FIX YOUR SHIT!12
Holy shit. I'm sitting in my CS class and I just heard someone complaining about the stupid responses they get when they tell people they're a CS major.
I heard a new one that is honestly the most stupid fucking thing ever. She told someone she's a CS major and they replied "Oh so are you taking a lot of chemistry classes or something?"8
Could all this fucking weak sick people just stay at home instead of coming to our damn open space office and be coughing their guts out ever 20 seconds for all the office to listen! damn, have some respect for the healthy people and go lie in your bed.11
I. HATE. HUMANS!
A family of four lurking side by side on an already extremely small sidewalk? Stop reproducing or I will start kicking your fucking kids in front of the next truck.
Ignoring the traffic laws as a biker and almost crashing into me because you just didn't care for the traffic light? Fuck you! Next time I see you I will stick a steel rod in between your spokes so you fly into the next cars window.
Randomly and spontaneously stoping on the sidewalk while I am at my top walking speed? Next time I will just run you over. With a bulldozer. And than again in reverse. I just don't get people, I guess.8
Why is everybody too dumb to just walk... why are people like this:
After completing my sprint and some lingering stuff in the backlog
Me: Hey, there's this tiny feature people have really requested, I'll go build it since I got nothing else to do at the moment. It'll only take like 1h
PO: Hmm ok. Don't work on that yet, we need to check with business people and agree on the user stories and bla bla bla
Me: Ok, well there's these bugs I can take care of then, I'll get them fixed, won't be long.
PO: Hmmm, we need to measure the impact first. Let me get back to you on that a bit later
Me: Meh, oh. I'll refactor this bad component meanwhile then.
PO: Have you created a story for that in JIRA? Create the story first and then we'll groom it and take it in when we've time
Me in my head: Dafuq! Im trying to work on your fucking project but you keep throwing all that business bueraucracy shit at me. What am I supposed to do then? Sip coffee in the kitchen and talk about the other fucking billion failed "new business opportunities" with my peers? Fuck this circle jerk of a billion management people all trying to make themselves important. Nothing. Ever. Gets. Fucking. Done!!!
Me: Ah right, I'll do that *proceeds to the water cooler*5
I really, really don't understand people.
Made a post showing gameplay video from my game "Hang in There" - hundreds of like on it, people commenting how original it is, and that they want to play it "now".
Released the game a couple of days later... less than 15 installs - and the freaking game is FREE :/
Here it is, judge it yourself:
When you've to explain normal people that you're a dev and not a hacker and so you can't just hack into their ex's Facebook account like it's some magic trick.3
No grandpa, I don't scam people online. I am a web developer - I earn my living online, building web apps, plugins, etc. (and stuff that you won't really grasp). And again, stop telling people that I'm lazy - I don't watch movies on my computer from 8AM-5PM. Lovely grandma, please don't believe him.2
I today have seen lovers'name carved into a tree. I don't think it's cute. I just think it's strange how many people take knives on a date16
A new online store for custom PC has opened in Switzerland.
For overclocking they want CHF 10 (around 9.50 $) more for every MHz.
I know that some people gonna buy this shit and pay for that. If that people knew that you only need to access BIOS/After Burner for it 😂😂😂😂
New guy (good friend) is on the line with me shadowing. OMFG THESE PEOPLE HAVE HEAVY ACCENTS. Only reason I can hear them is my babysitter has a heavy Vietnamese accent as well, so I'm used to it, but HOLY CRUD this is painful. I feel bad for my newest teammate30
I just cant fucking believe this bullshit!
THE PRODUCT YOU'RE ASKING FOR NOW ITS NOT THE PRODUCT WE AGREED ON MAKING. ALL THE ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY AND CHANGES YOU WANT TAKE TIME!
I can't believe how rude can people be! We were supposed to stop working in this product MONTHS ago but you keep asking for changes, for additional things and then you yell at us just because we dont have it ready for yesterday?! You got some fucking balls man just fuck off. You have to understand the development process, every change you ask for can have consecuences that make us rewrite a bunch of code and we also need to test everything again and again to make sure it works! Gimme a break!4
Want to make some friends quickly?
Just go to any pseudo startup incubator in a university (all business people with an idea), mention you are a coder (mimicking the typing on a keyboard to make sure they understand) and all of the sudden you'll have a crowd of people around you that "need to talk to you"
The other guys working with me have to physically protect me every time someone finds out1
After having spent countless hours of my life in tech, enough hours to be years..
I can safely say:
No technology will ever beat the frustration that is having to deal with people.
Code might be horrible, work might be an endeavour at times. But NOTHING..NOTHING beats having to deal with customers that are rude, impolite, disrespectful..downright abusive at times, condescending et.c.
It becomes this gnawing sensation that never just goes away..the first ones don't matter, after a couple of months you get gripes but bite down.. sometimes it just makes you feel psychotic.
and all you can do is laugh about it.
I don't have a problem with tech, I have a problem with the nature of people.4
I have difficulties to process why some of my developer colleagues have such difficulties reading and processing error messages.
It says what is wrong RIGHT THERE MAN!3
In sprint planning meeting, prioritizing the tasks...
ScrumMaster: "Next item, create a spreadsheet that identifies the systems used by order processing so the PO can identify errors by system."
Me: "That's already done."
ScrumMaster: "Did you work ahead of the sprint again?"
- Really trying not to throw something heavy at his head.
Me: "No, you did back in January."
- SM stutters..um..uhhs...
ScrumMaster: "No, I never did that...see."
- SM navigates to the sharepoint directory
Me: "Yep, there it is."
ScrumMaster: "I didn't create it, you must have."
Me: "Created by...you."
ScrumMaster: "Uh...um....I might have added it to sharepoint, but doesn't mean I created it. Anyway, lets take a look..."
- opens the spreadsheet
ScrumMaster: "What is this? Did you simply export the sharepoint list to excel?"
- Getting harder and harder to resist the urge to throw something heavy at his head.
Me: "I don't know what that is, you created it. You commented on the Trello card that this task item was done."
ScrumMaster: "No, I've never seen this or made any comment on the Trello board...lets look ..."
- FRACK!!! TRELLO IS DOWN!!!
ScrumMaster: "When Trello comes back up I'll assign the card to you. Lets stay on task with the cards from now on. Next item ... "
Trello up, 3 hours later, back at my desk, there is his fracking comment from January about uploading the spreadsheet to sharepoint. Frack frack frack people suck3
I wish I knew for sure I wouldn't offend certain people if they read this. I'll be vague for a reason..
WHY THE FUCK ARE. PI WRITING A PROGRAM IN A LANGUAGE OF YOUR LIKING AND THEN TELLING ME YOU DON'T KNOW WHICH FILE TO UPLOAD?!,!,!? How about the ones that make it work?
And why did you send the program, unformatted? This hurts.
I'm trying to teach these children how to fucking be professional in their jobs and this is what I'm working with.
How hard is it to know your tools and pick one that shows you know what you're doing????
And all this after the deadline, and the language written wrong14
I find it quite entertaining how "psychologists" think that people with autism/Asperger have difficulty making eye contact in general. Whenever I talk to fellow engineers, people that I like talking to and feel comfortable with, I look them in the eyes at pretty much the same rate as a regular person would. But the thing is.. looking someone in the eyes expresses interest!14
"You should record video tutorials of how to do stuff", people say to me.
#1 - I suck on camera. I have a really annoying nasally voice that I just can't stand to hear in my own head, let alone on video.
#2 - I look like every stupid a--hole fat old ugly white guy people love to hate. Nobody wants to see that.
#3 - I suck at remembering what the f$$# I was going to say to begin the video, to show the thing I was going to show, and how to end it without sounding like a complete #@#%@# moron.
#4 - %@%$#@ QuickTime! And any other video screen recording software that NEVER $%#@#$% WORKS for me!! I'll be in the middle of a very complex process I'm demonstrating and BAM! The whole recording crashes. Six takes and six more crashes later and I'm @#%#@# done with trying to do this #@$@#%.
Screenshots and text it is and always will be.9
It astounds me that people will actually pay thousands of dollars to come to a bootcamp and just fuck around...
Like we will spend an hour going over materials and concept and when it comes time to apply it and build something the kid next to me never knows what's going on! And then always asks me how to do it.
I tried being positive about it and be like hey if I can explain it to him...then that means I really know it!
Fast forward a couple weeks and I'm ready to strangle the kid.
He will sit on his phone playing games the whole time the lesson is going. Then when the lesson is over, put his phone down and immediately ask me how to do it...
The fuck!? Maybe if you'd just listen you'd know wtf you're doing by now you useless vapid brainless twatwaffle!4
!dev but actual long rant - about the students in my grade.
TL;DR: 1 asshole in 10 people can ruin everything. Mobbing sucks. I dislike parties.
There's the word "Jahrgang" in Germany which means the people in the same school year as you. I'll refer to it as "my (collective) classmates" although we don't have classes anymore, rather courses and I also mean those I do not have courses with.
With that out of the way, let the rant begin.
It's often the case that people with high logical and intellectual skills (no being arrogant, other people categorize me like that) have a lack of social skills - or empathy.
I'm a kind of an outsider in a way that since 10th grade I stopped trying to attach myself to certain groups since I do not fit in there. I'm fine with that now. Nowadays I can at least socialize with other nerds.
Here's why I dislike the collective of my classmates. This year is my last school year and as always, a big group forms a spirit. They have a theme (superheroes - super boring). I didn't go to any party they threw and I don't plan to go to the graduation ceremony as well since it's an unofficial party and not a school event. I hate parties. I hate alc and drunken teenagers. I didn't attend the "Kursfahrt" - a kind of excursion that's like holidays with your course - mainly because I dislike my "Stammkurs" (main course).
Why? I had a friend in this course. She was short, geeky and I could actually talk to her. Yet some jerks (not intensely) bullied her because "she was awkward" and in the end, she switched school - also because of other reasons.
When she was gone, even those who didn't bully her and who are considered "nice" made fun of her and talked badly about her - and me hanging around with her. So since then, I avoid anything with them that's not 100% school related.
Now they're planning what we call "Abigag" - it's a joke/prank the graduates pull on the school and younger students, something funny like an entrance room full of balloons and many other things. Also, the "Abizeitung", the yearbook the graduates put out with articles about their courses, teacher ranking and quotes etc. Also, a cabaret evening from the graduates to collect money for the graduation party. Cool stuff actually. I thought about taking part.
I'd say my talents are creativity and computer stuff. So a friend chatted with me about nerdy pranks like a school-wide wallpaper change. Or releasing a fake password list of the teachers - claiming we hacked them - with puns and insiders about the teaches. He said he gotta invite me into the WhatsApp group of the Abi prank. Disclaimer: He's one of those people who are socialized but still able to talk with me. He's fine.
Well guess what he told me later:
They don't want me on the team since I distance myself from my classmates. I should either be fully one of them or not at all.
That's enough. Who distances whom? I thought they were happy to have me on board but horse shit! Stuck with ideologies from the 19th century.
They can lick my ***. I don't have anything against most of them in person but as a collective, they're just fucking stupid. I guess it wasn't even the majority saying they don't want me to help. It was probably just the small crew of leading and loud jerks. And no one would disagree with them saying "Why not? He wants to help?" (even if it was their opinion) - they don't have the brain or balls to say anything against the strong idiot leaders. They'll do great later in politics as an adult - they wouldn't criticize Hitler if they were under his "protection".
So I won't take part in making Abi pranks, - but also not the Paper and cabaret eve. They can go jerk off to being part of a huge collection of assholes - which I, in all my pride, am not part of other than on paper.
(Disclaimer: No critics to other outsiders but those who were engaged and responsible for the choice of not letting me help)
If anyone actually read this:
Who were/are you in school times?
A proud outsider like me? Party boi/girl? Engaged striver?29
For some context:
I live in a large shared house. It's nice, the people are generally good and we're all friends. Now for the rant.
I've been feeling pretty I'll for about a week now, started with a migraine, then the glands in my neck started swelling, feverish, my eczema started playing up and now my brain is basically in fire on one side of my head, and everyone in the house knows this.
Last night I decided to try and just get to sleep early, I felt shit and I know I need sleep. At 11:30pm, I realise it's a Friday so it's not THAT late, but one of my housemates comes home and begins playing music, quite loudly just as I'm beginning to fall asleep. This goes on for some time. It's not loud enough to cause a direct disturbance but enough to keep me from falling asleep.
Just as she finishes, I start to drift off. Another housemate comes back from her holiday, decides that that time, roughly 1am, is the PERFECT time to have a shower. Her room is right next to mine, it's a power shower so it's pretty fucking loud. I can't help but think that the universe is fucking with me at this point.
After this, she starts unpacking. It's quite loud again. It's now 2am. I know my body will want to wake up at around 6 because it is a fucking cunt and always does. Eventually drift off at 2:30am ish.
It is now 6:30am. I have just woken up because my body is a cunt. Here I am, sleep deprived to fuck. My brain is still very much on fire. I am just about ready to set fire to every single fucking human on the planet. Honestly, what the fuck happened to common courtesy? Do people just not think of ANYONE else but themselves? Does common sense not exist either?8
Ah the wonders of working with non-technical people. 😤
I had a logistical problem. The SSD on my laptop crashed.
Me: No biggie just request new one.
Them: Sorry we don't have any on stock.
Me:Okey then give me a new laptop.
Them:Ok fine here you go.
Me:I specifically required 16 GB of RAM.
Them: ok here is an extra 8gb
Me: I need DDR 4 not DDR3
Them: don't have any. We will restock shortly.
A couple a days later a colleague requested 8gb DDR3 and got DDR 4.
The fuck is wrong with people. Can you not read?🤔🙄2
So yesterday i went to this live theatre drama and i had an extra ticket. I asked this random guy the way to that theatre and apparently he was looking to get ticket for the same show. I offered him my other ticket for free.
We introduce ourself to each other and i came to know he worked as salesman or something. As i talked about my job, I told about me leaving job in hopes of self employment.
*Cue the sales pitch*
He started talking about some scheme kind of thing to have financial freedom. He talks about how we can get products at upto 15% discount and we have to sell them to others.
I was skeptical about it and he talked they have website as if that will pimpress me or something.
I visited the site and i was not surprised at all. It was nothing but an halfassed e-commerce store. I knew it was halfassed and probably setup by the "CEO" himself.
And the products in that site are nothing but stupid cosmetic products!
And to top it off, you have to spend around $200 to join this scheme. This poor guy doesn't realise he is just being a talking puppet to that halfassed e-commerce business BY PAYING THEM!!!
He even said one of his friend in London took leave to join this scheme or whatever... What a stupid friend.
Anyway, i just regret giving away a ticket to some stupid people like him. I'd have been much more happier if i had just thrown the extra ticket in the trash.
Oy, can any of you chaps hack a facebook account?
Asking for a friend.
Seriously. This waste of oxygen said if I wasnt good enough, I should find someone else to do it.
God I hate humans. I'm converting to hinduism so I can get reincarnated as something else. A cat maybe.22
When I am telling non-tech people that I am studying Software Engineering:
They: What do you study at university?
Me: Software Engineering
They: Oh, so you're an engineer! My *some random person* is also an engineer!
Me: No, not that kind of engineer. I am a SOFTWARE engineer. I don't build things.
Me: I write code. Programs. For computers. I a programmer.
They: oh, great, very perspective! Will you fix my *PC/printer/whatever has on/off button on it*?
A friend I used to do computer support for, on learning that I was busy one weekend writing a program for a paying client, decided to wind me up by saying it wasn't a "real" program because I didn't also write the language. I stupidly took the bait and went off on a 15 min rant about modularity and cross-platform compatibility (issues he never understood). This friend is now a lawyer and winds people up for a living.1
Things I hate:
- People who think they are cool because they use GNU/Linux
- People who use GNU/Linux because it's free software but at the same time use Windows because "It's needed for gaming"
- People who ask for hacking
- People who don't try alternatives to their proprietary software
- People who say Chrome/Chromium is the better browser
- People who say Firefox is the better browser
- People who say any other browser is the better browser
- People who can't wait for a moment
- People who are super opinionated and call everything "bullshit" or "garbage"
- People who take everything serious
All in all, a lot of cliche tech people. Which by the way makes it hard to find a decent tech Community since 9 out of 10 Communities are highly opinionated. Nothing against opinions, but it doesn't really help to call something garbage. Explain me WHY you think it's garbage and let me decide it myself. Links are fine. Why are tech people often that unreflected?
I don't really expect answers but also don't mind them ^^14
Rant about social media in general, including devRant.
I enjoy interacting with like minded people. What I do not enjoy is the whole degradation of the conversation at hand. Sooner or later, someone takes something the wrong way, addresses something this social network was not meant to address (it's devRant not Facebook), and the audience has a multitude of English as a #(rd/th/whatever) language human beings.
Accept that as the premise, and I think we could get along a lot better.
However commonly this fact is ignored. Understand the sentiment behind statements, not the statement itself. If any part of it is unclear, then request clarification.
Agree, disagree, civil debates one thing, but degrading the conversation to name calling or similar emotions only results in poor communication, useless emotions running high, and nothing gained.
When People Around You And Your Family And Closest Friends Think that programming is hacking.
I just don't have words.....
Yesterday I had message from our CEO, that one of our biggest and most important project's CEO have told her that there is spelling mistake in my email signature and people there will judge because of that.
PS: I had Enginner instead of Engineer in such small font that even no one even noticed in entire year not even me.(I don't even feel ashamed for that it was not intentional and it does not make me bad at what I do at my work)
I just want to ask you guys are people really that bad they judge based on spellings? and not on work and their dedication?
I think there will be thousand of people who can't even speak or write English but are more innovative.12
People telling me what to do. I am 19 yo. I havent got into university, i have passed the bachelor's degree exam with 83.5% in computer science, i am employed in web development and i like it. Im not even thinking about going to university for now, not even getting a driving license, the stress is too big for now. I love traveling by bike. I enjoy listening to heavy metal and hard rock and I love peace more and i enjoy talking with people.
The biggest hurdle is people who tell me "do that because everyone does". And I'm not talking about my mom. She supported me everytime. I'm talking about people who doesn't belive in someone's knowledge and bothers the others. It's good if you give me advice and talk with me about it, but never be strict about that advice.7
Nothing is more frustrating than fighting for hours with an issue, then find a single thread on a website with someone having the exact same problem as you and the only comment below is from OP with "nvm, sorted it out"
BUT HOW DID YOU DO THAT?! THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME FUCKING PROBLEM AS YOU AND YOU'RE LEAVING THEM WITH THEIR FRUSTRATION YOU IGNORANT, STUBBORN ASSHOLE!!!1
It's the 21st century. We have this amazing thing called the Internet. It's literally at our finger tips. Any information you want can be found with the tap of a phone screen, and the information will be presented to you in less than a second.
Why is this concept so fucking hard for people to comprehend? Instead of asking me "How do I write a resignation letter?", search the damn internet for resignation letter guides. Like Jesus Christ, it's not that hard of a concept to comprehend. Especially when you've basically grown up with the internet in our lives.1
We've all had shitty jobs at one point or another, maybe some of us already had software engineering experience while having to work in a different field for a variety of reasons.
Well check this shit.
At one point(during my second year of school) for various reasons I had to work in retail. For those that know, retail can be a soul crushing experience...the trick is not letting management to convince you that it is an actual good job, it is not, and I have respect and sympathy for everyone currently working in it. The mind numbing retarded customers that we get are absolutely fantastic in every sense of the word.
My position in retail was as a phone salesman, for MetroPCS (which for all of y'all european ninjas is one of the low end phone carriers here in the U.S) and the people that we get as customers where I live are normally very poor which apparently in Mexican culture stands for annoyingly ignorant (I am Mexican myself, so I can really vouch for this shit)
One day a customer came in telling me that there was an app that he was using that kept giving him troubles, it was a map application for truck drivers. Now, obviously, this had nothing to do with my line of work(phone salesman) and as such I normally tried to explain that and let them be, but I imagined that it was a settings issue so I reluctantly agreed to help him. I explained to him that the app was no longer maintained and that the reason for it was probably that the developer abandoned it and that he would just have to look into the app, upon closer inspection the app itself was nothing more than a wrapper over google maps with trucker icons and a "trucker" interface, he was using the app as a GPS navigator and he could as well just have been using google maps.
The conversation was like this:
Me: Well this app is no longer supported, it will probably be taken off the google store soon, you can look for something similar or just change to Google maps
Retard: What? no! I came here in order for you to fix it, Metro needs to fix their own apps!
Me (in complete disbelief): We have no control over third party apps, and even for the ones that we provide the store has no control over them. But this app is not ours and so we can't really do anything about it.
Retard: Well WTF should I do? I have been having many issues with youtube and spotify, shouldn't Metro fix their Google store?
Me: Those apps are not ours.....wait, you seem to believe that we own youtube and spotify, those are not ours
Retard: How the fuck they are not yours! its your phone isn't it?
Me: Eh no.....Metro does not(at this point I was sort of smiling because I wanted to laugh) own youtube or spotify or the play store or even this phone, metro does not own Android or Samsung(his phone was a samsung core prime)
Retard: Well You need to fix this
Me: No I do not and I can not, the developer for this app abandoned it and has nothing to do with us
Retard: Well call the developer and tell him to fix it
At this point I was on a very bad mode since this dude was being obnoxiously rude from the beginning and it annoyed me how he was asking for dumb shit.
Me: Did you pay for this app?
Me: So you expect that some developer out there will just go about and get working for something that you did not pay for?
Why don't you just use Google maps as your GPS?
Retard: Don't be stupid, Google has no maps
At this point I show him the screen where there is a lil app that said maps, pressed it and voila! map comes to life
Retard: Well....I did not know
Me: Yeah....but I am the stupid one right?
** throws phone for him to catch
Me: Have a good one bud.
And my manager was right next to me, he was just trying to control his laughter the whole time. I really despised working in there and was glad when I left. Retail man.......such a horrible fucking world.7
Please, oh please, tell me there's an exception for murdering people using their phone in speaker mode right in the middle of an open space.
Please ... I feel like it should count as public service and be rewarded ..
I'm trying to work here, it don't give the slightest flying fuck about the latest crap you dare to call code and how it fucked up your whole application.5
I just saw the Aladdin movie. It was a beautiful and fun movie. I loved it.
Will Smith was perfect as the genie. I don't understand why everyone created a big fuss when they saw Will Smith as the genie in the trailer.
People are dumb.13
An online community I've been part of for years has seen a lot of popularity/hate overnight due to a new policy. The influx of new people who want nothing to do with us but just drop by to troll and be cunts is impressive. Also, a significant amount of bots. I want my online home back :( I'm for the new policy and very much against these new clowns who don't really have any reason to be on our page. Before anyone yells gatekeeping, it's a site about knitting and crochet. Why would you go there if you don't know either craft and have no desire to learn or talk about those? So disappointed. I hope it brought new crafters in and that the trolls will go away soon. It's been such a nice place for so long with barely any idiots because it was reasonably small.. And now look at this mess. I logged in to 20 friend requests from people I don't know and am almost certain aren't real people.
Why is it so hard for humans to accept that some people may disagree with them and that's okay?17
That first days when you're on DevRant and you know nobody is gonna take you for serious as long as you have no avatar. #butfinalymadeit :)
X : Do you accept space for username at sign up?
Me : Nope, no space. Username shouldn't have space.
X : Lots of people have trouble at registration because of that.
After many years... I truly believe that non IT people belive that this is how programmers work:
- Goodmorning computer. How are you? Can you make me a program? I want the program to include an userfriendly userinterface, database, optimized code, documentation and dont forget that i dont want any bugs! Thanks computer. I'll get back to you when my coffee is ready.5
Is amazing the kind of shit you have to swallow when your management has regular meetings with really really super extremely good-looking sales people.14
Some people are just disgusting liars. They find it convenient to lie rather than to keep their word. They don't deserve free stuffs or services.
This is why communism will never work.
Fuck those people.18
I came around the corner in the corridor where a senior PM talked with an engineer.
PM: ... and that's why a good team is so important and we also need sensitive people.
Me: do we have some here?
PM: oh yes, I'm highly sensitive.
Me: one learns something new every day. :-)1
Saw a classmate returning an plain text password from a function to try to push it in a JSON file for an API we have to build for class.
I try to correct him and show him a few things that are better practices and for security, I get yelled at and called a know-it-all for trying to help... I'm so done with people -.-4
Don’t you hate it when people completly overcomplicates code?
The bottom one is my edit of the code.7
I fucking hate morning people like the one in the story below!
Before we begin story time I want to acknowledge some things.
This is largely a case of a person having a lack of awareness and giving in to their base instincts (which are wrong).
People all tend to think that everyone else is like them (most children below a certain age cannot make this distinction and many adults never learn it either).
To take it a step further, anyone who isn't just like them is Lazy/Bad/An Asshole/etc.
FUCK THOSE PEOPLE
Now it's story time...
I worked for a startup. We used a modified SCRUM, and we had standups every day @ 10 AM, the other team had then at 11:30 AM.
We get a new product owner. He is a morning person. But basically, he is a day-trader so he wakes up at 5 AM to trade and is in the office by 8 AM every day.
The problem is, he uses this as a reason to leave every day at 3 PM when EVERY other member of the team is there until at least 5 PM.
So he says one day (when I am not there) that we are moving our standups to 8:30 AM...
"Because he wants to make more use of the time and wants to get more done!"
So the next day a bunch of us miss this standup, the second day I was there in time but instead of going to the standup I sent them a picture of myself sitting in a coffee shop across the street with a message saying...
"I will be holding a meeting today at 10 AM, I expect EVERYONE to be there. If anyone on our team is absent then we will sit there and that absent person will be responsible for the time we waste waiting for them."
10 AM rolls around and the Product Owner is nowhere to be seen. The team starts complaining about the early standup and I tell them that this meeting is for me to take care of it. I tell them to sit silently and let me handle it.
We all message the PO saying the same thing...
"Come to the meeting, You are wasting our time!!!"
So he shows up at 10:20 AM and it begins.
(Now I'm going to do this as a conversation)
PO: "So I assume this is about the standup?..."
ME: "Feel free to ramble on as long as you want, you have already wasted 20 minutes of our time so we will sit here quietly and wait for you to decide you are ready to stop wasting our time with your ramblings. That's fine."
<PO then shuts up in disbelief>
ME: "So are you finished?"
ME: "I'm expecting an answer PO!"
PO: Yes, for now.
ME: I am moving our standups to 5 PM, end of discussion.
PO: Becuase your too lazy to be here by 8 AM?
<I expected this>
ME: No because I'm an asshole who expect everyone to conform to my schedule.
PO: ..., Well, I am not here at 5 PM.
ME: Sounds like your too "lazy" be here at 5 PM, eh?
PO: I have other things I do then.
ME: Ah, now the truth comes out. You care more about your life than our business. That's unacceptable! I personally don't care what you want to do. The fact is that we are working here and every day we end up having PO questions that need to and can't be answered because you are not here.
PO: <To the team> The standup is still at 8:30 AM.
ME: <To the team> The standup is at 5 PM. End of story. And from now on whenever we have questions before 5 for PO and he is not here we will be recording it and putting it in his report.
Then I walk away.
That day we held a standup at 5 PM. He wasn't there. He held a standup at 8:30 AM and he didn't even show up. He stayed home a video in. He then arrived in the office and said...
PO: Since no one was in the standup today we will be moving it back to 10 AM.
ME: Since PO has seen the selfishness of his ways, We will be moving the standup from 5 PM back to 10 AM.
FUCK THOSE PEOPLE7
There are always three questions i get asked when i tell people I'm a programmer:
Can you take a look at my phone/laptop/pc etc...?
Can you hack?
Whats the green stuff from matrix?3
The more I interact with people on Reddit, the more I realise that the world needs a new plague.2
I've just added the possibility to connect to an external game server to my app and immediately regret it. People started sending me emails saying that it doesn't work. What they entered in the URL bar? "hi", "cunt" and a porn website...9
For fucks sake can people stop using phones while walking, especially in busy places it's getting fucking ridiculous not to mention dangerous, the number of people I've seen that have headphones on and are glued to their screens almost bumping into people. What can they possibly be doing that's so important that they cant leave their phone in their pocket for 15 minutes while they get to where they need to be.6
Is it just me or the patterns of speech of some people get increasingly more annoying when you realize they speak with callbacks.
Person1: "Oh, I gotta tell you about the color of my new bike"
Me: "Nice, so what did you decide?"
Person2: "I was undecided about which color to select because of what happened to Andrew, Andrew told his his girlfriend, which by the way got recently pregnant, I can't believe she is expecting! She looks so young. Do you know how old is she?"
Me: "No, but she does look young"
Person2: "Yeah, I wish I looked that young. I have been trying to get in shape again but I have been so busy lately. My boss has been giving me so many assignments lately and I have been having to neglect my dog which is a shame cause he is such a good doggo. The other day we went to the park and someone left the door open and he didn't chase the cars. Do you remember when he was a puppy and he kept pulling the leash trying to chase the cars?"
Me: "Yeah, I remember being scared of him getting run over by a car. I am glad he isn't doing that anymore"
Person2: "Yeah, when I was 15 years old I had a dog that died just like that, it was so traumatic. His name was Jack and he was so feisty. As a matter of fact most small dogs I have seen are feisty."
And so on. In the back on my mind I have to keep track of some unanswered questions like: What happened to Andrew? What color is the bike? And the conversation keeps getting derailed. It's exhausting and it feels just like if I was reading code with a lot of callbacks.7
I was amazed by an elderly man on the subway yesterday, he pulled out his tabled and stated reading a book on it. Thinking of that I know way too much younger people who can't even use a computer properly..1
I didnt thought I have to write this down, but you people dont get standard business logic, so here advice from someone who knows that shit:
- If you wanna get paid, make your own contract and let a lawyer look over it.
- always have a lawyer on retainer and enough money for him/her.
- nothing is real without a signature.
- your clients should know that you're gonna sue them if they don't pay.
- don't go easy on anyone, here an easy way to decide if you should sue:
Didnt pay? Sue.
Breaks contract? Sue
Asks for later payment? Dont
- always code in a killswitch, trust me you're gonna need it.8
Coding impacted my life in a lot of good ways one unexpected thing happed "Suddenly people couldn't understand me" ! 😂2
Suck my sweatty balls you cock sucking, brain washed ignorant flat earth mother fuckers. If only evolution was more aggressive, we'd have gotten rid of you in the stome age. But hey you can still choke your crap filled mouths on fucking tide pods you stupid cunts.
If only people would stop bashing technologies just because their news say so.
Seriously every forum I visit, there's always some post saying "fuck technology x, it's ..."
Poor me, a dev, sometimes fails to ignore idiots and replies to such posts. "But it's not anonymous, the government said.."
"it is against god's will, our *insert religious figure here* said..."
Fuck your cock sucking governments!!
It's just like every fucking innovation ever. First religion: I'm not against religion at all, if it's something that brings a person peace of mind... but please keep away from interfering with scientific progress. After all if you're so sure about what you're believing in, there's nothing you should be afraid that science would reveal, no?
Then governments: government? Manipulating people? Feeding brains shit? pfftt when does that happen?
Fuck every cock sucking government.. except you know, tbe good ones I guess :p
If people listened to those ignorant cunts back in the days, we'd still believe we're the center of this whole fucking universe, and that a whale ate the moon every now and then...
And then you find out ignorance is infectious. Ignorants start spreading ignorance, and if enough ignorants believe some shit... the shit becomes the truth.
Can you please fucking read about the thing you're about to ignorantly bash before doing so?
Can you stop listening to news and governments about this crap? If anything it's in your govs best interest to keep you afraid of progress.
I'm literally just talking for the sake of it, It's what rants are for no?
Idk I should probably just ignore idiots on the internet... but there's a limit to how much ignorance and stupidity you can take.
At least we'll never run out of restaurant employees I guess5
It's kinda disturbing when people watch landscape videos holding their phones upright. I mean all you had to do was rotate the damn phone!13
A rant about people in general:
I am sick of people not caring, not giving a fuck, not valuing others.
Studying CS this is something I noticed the past year: people tend to not acknowledge that there are other human beings around them.
Some are just focused on getting their degree done and dusted as fast as possible, which is fine.
Some are working to pay the rent or student loans, which is fine.
Others just do their thing, code their stuff, criticize other's code... which is also fine.
But nobody's realizing they're interacting with other people! Other living, feeling human beings. For them it's just about getting it done.
And not just at university.
I've started seeing it everywhere.
At the job I'm working, people in the shops and on the streets.
I don't get it. We are all human on this rocky sphere in space. Why do so many not care for each other?
It makes me sad.4
The Eve V is a Community Developed Windows Tablet which will be released in Ocotober this year.
The best specs you can get is i7 6th Gen, 16 GB Ram and 500 GB SSD for around 1400$.
He wants 32 GB RAM in such a slim and small Tablet. Also wants a 7th Gen Intel CPU and 1 TB SSD in it. He's ready to pay 1000 $ more for his special edition.
The Eve V is already finished with tooling and they are wating for the screens to arrive. They already have all the other parts.
Dude you're crazy and that specs just for VM's? What are you running? 10x WinShitBox?
He's insulting everyone on the forum with a different opinion and says, retooling will be such easy.
That guy is a real douchebag and doesn't know shit. If you would build in different parts like this, you would need to remodel the whole tablet. You can stick your 1000$ in your ass, retooling would cost more than 10'000$
If it's so easy you shithead, then do it yourself and dont say it's possible and say to other people they should do! 😂😂2
I love you devRant
I'm heading to bed here pretty quickly, but before I lay down I just wanted to say something.
I've been a long time lurker, but have just recently registered as a member. Whenever I get a chance to, I have the urge to open up devRant and take a scroll through recent posts. You guys are the best, and give me something to chuckle at. It's just really great and refreshing to find a community that is supportive, and full of so many inspiring people. It's like Shangri-La - the hidden community that you always knew existed, but could never find2
I just fucking hate people that have 10 years without talking to me and write me to ask for a favor.
Starting like: hey man how are you doing? Like you give a fuck about the shithole I'm at, just tell me what a fuck do you want and let me go back to my life.6
People who tell me they hate PHP, though when I ask said person whether he's used PHP all he can answer is "maybe once".
Don't hate on a language if you have barely even used it3
So I recently returned from university and was catching up with people. Then this guy(childhood friend) who is in EE was "asking" me about how my academics were going. So I was describing my cs classes to him until he suddenly interrupted me saying he knows "how algorithms work" and also that IT == CS. I tried my best to explain to him that it is not the same thing, but his ego just couldn't allow me to talk. He continued on forcefully about how he did a project in java that used SQL and blahblahblah. After he was done exhibiting himself, he asked me what languages do you know(LOL)? When I tried to explain to him that cs is not about learning languages, the guy proceeded to interrupt me again and tell me how his curriculum is hard so as to imply that mine is shit. Finally, this human waste told me to "open java" so that he could code, I opened up my terminal, which he responded to by asking me "What is that?"2
I've really struggled to make friends with people who code... and it's been absolutely frustrating. Does everyone in this industry have a god complex or something? Everyone I try to make friends with ends up being super narcissistic and self obsessed it's crazy. One of them wanted to be my mentor a while back, and we still talk occasionally, but after getting to know him I decided I didn't want to learn from him. It turns out he only mentors people to showboat his greatness and claim later that all their success is directly his doing. I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people and I only ever had 2 sessions from him. One of the best choices I've ever made. But I've found a lot of people who are programmers tend to be a lot like him. A lot of them I talk to will hit me up to brag about themselves or what they've done. But none ever ask what's been up with me or how my journey is doing? Is this just a normal thing in this industry or am I just meeting terrible people. It's made me appreciate my slightly dumber friends, cause at least they care about me and it shows.
More a rant than anything, but genuinely curious if anyone else has this issue... I'm starting my bootcamp soon and I'm hoping to make friends but I'm so concerned about this it's kind of giving me anxiety.14
I'm here in my bed. I can't sleep and in less than 5 hours I will have an important exam. I was thinking that a few months ago I went to a IT company as a school program. I would have to stay there for 2 weeks and "work" for them.
Upon arrival, the guy who had to monitor me gave me a sheet of paper with 5 alghoritmic problems to solve. He tells me to use java and hands me a laptop. naturally with windows. I try to look for some ideas but I can not find anything. I go to the control panel and search for something. Obviously there is a lot of bloatware and nothing catches my attention. then strangely I find something called oracle ... something ... but when trying to open it it gives me an error.
Fuck me. I decided to open notebook(normal one not ++ or something) and start solving the problems trying to remember the names of the methods and the classes based on what I had learned in school. then the guy comes back and looks at me puzzled. I tell him I did not find any IDE for java and the only one I found seem to give me an error. The guy double clicks and the program opens...fucking shit... He tells me to finish the problems and goes away perplexed. I copy the code from notepad to the IDE, I check the errors, I run it and the add some comments and I call the guy. he looks at the code, says that everything seems fine and then assigns me other things to do.
Now. HOW FUCKING STUPID MUST SOMEONE BE TO THINK THAT WRITING JAVA IN NOTEPAD IS A VIABLE CHOICE, AMONG ALL THE POSSIBLE SANE CHOICES I COULD HAVE MADE LIKE TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE ERROR OF THE IDE OR CALL THE GUY... NO. MY LITTLE SHOTTY FUCKING BRAIN DECIDED THAT NOTEPAD WAS A GOOD CHOICE. IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME IN THE SAME MOMENT THAT I OPENED NOTEPAD I WOULD BITCH SLAP MYSELF SO HARD THAT I WOULD LOSE MY SOULD AND THE LAST 2 NEURON THAT MADE THAT SHITTY CHOICE. I WOULD BITCH SLAP MYSELF SO HARD THAT THE KINETIC ENERGY PRODUCED WOULD COLLAPSE THE UNIVERSE ITSELF. AND FROM THE DARKNESS A NEW UNIVERSE WILL BE BORN. A UNIVERSE WHERE THERE IS NO JAVA OR WINDOWS. A UNIVERSE WHERE MY 2 NEURONS WOULD HAVE MADE THE SHITTIEST DUMBEST CHOICE EVER IN A I LAST MISERABLE SELF DESTRUCTIVE ATTEMPT.
but then I come on devrant and I read about people who did thing worse than writing java on notepad and then everything is fine
PS my English is so bad I had to use Google translate, write an original version, translate it and do a side by side comparison with my translated version to check If I could improve something. Don't now If It improved the quality or not...4
How do you guys deal with people who are negative, disparaging or just unsupportive of your work/hobby?
Pretty much everyone I know is either outright hostile to me working on projects outside of work because "it's the weekend" or "You could be getting drunk and playing games."
I've lost much of my interest with playing games all day (and I can't really do that anyway, housework/cooking/laundry needs to be done) and I'd rather spend my time productively.
How do you guys cope with people like that?7
Having fantasies about braining the couple two rows in front of me on the train, watching cooking shows at full blast on their laptop.3
Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7
Why are some people just so dumb? Not specifically with programming or development but just in general. How have we not reached a point where everybody has a substantial understanding of common sense and ethics?3
Why are you expected to have people management skills as your experience grows? I don't want to deal with people, I just want to deal with my code 😢😫7
After the end of Sprint, well, the QA people came up with this defect ( mind it 'defect' ) : "The exclamation mark is not very red" [ sic ]
Cancer died a death that moment.
Don't you just hate ignorance of others? I sure do. Don't you just hate when you try to tell someone something, but the person on the receiving end is like "Well, it's not my job, so I cannot relate, so I am not going to listen to you at all."
Now, let's talk about a little thing called PRIVACY. Whenever people ask me "Why do you not use Google Chrome, but you use firefox instead?" I always answer "Because it does not compromise your online privacy as much." But, those idiots never listen. The same goes with me being in favor of Unix-like systems such as MacOS and Linux. But they for some idiotic reason do not care for online privacy. They go for the "convenience". I know Google uses the data it collects to "help" you find better results. But the problem is is that you do not get a say in the choice that the algorithm chooses. Also, I know Google might say "Oh, we never look at your files and your information," and it is indeed true that most of the time when you try to research about the cons of Google using Google, only the pros of Google will pop up. Now, if I go onto DuckDuckGo or Bing or even Yahoo!, the results are going to be quite different. I have been using Gmail since about 2011. I have not switched because mainly of Youtube and because I have been using it for so long. True I have two other accounts, which are AOL and Hotmail, but I barely use them, and when I will be 100% concerned about my privacy, I am probably going to switch to AOL.
You might think that it is hypocritical of me to use Gmail, but have you ever tried switching from an email address that you have been using for years? It is hard. So I do the next good thing, and encrypt my emails whenever possible (GOD BLESS PGP). I know Google says that it itself encrypts the Emails itself, but, how can I trust such an advertisement monopoly? I mean, the encryption means nothing if they have the secret key, if needed, they'll just decrypt my email and read the fucking thing. That's why I have my own set of Public and Private keys, and I recommend you too encrypt your Emails, especially any sensitive data that you ever send. I am also buying a web camera cover, because I really do not trust the folks at the NSA and the CIA and all other 3 letter government agencies. But people always tell me "But how can I be significant to the government, I have nothing to hide," which is a fucking lie, EVERYONE HAS GOT SOMETHING TO HIDE.There cannot be freedom of speech if the government constantly sees what you're saying. I wish there were more people in the world like Snowden :/4
Look at this guy, commenting on a fox News story about McAfee VS the IRS. What a fucking idiot.
Why do people talk about shit they have no knowledge of whatsoever? Especially these jackasses who go on news sites and accuse legitimate businesses of insane things, because all they know is incorrect stereotypes and they are too narcissistic to correct themselves.
What. The. Fuck!4
For all the Java jokes I see here and people bashing the language, are there any Java devs here? If you are a Java dev, do you enjoy it?10
Why don't people secure their devices if they are on a shared network? I just ran a network scan and found 3 raspberrys, all of them with the default credentials....2
Met someone recently whose goal with their business is to be an “idea person”. Basically, they’d look at your business, suggest an idea, and it’d be so good you’d pay them for it and go on to the next idea.
Spent the next 15 minutes explaining that
1) Ideas without implementation strategies are cheap (on the order of free if it’s something you can completely express in a sentence or come up with after a superficial observation)
2) You need to bring more to the table than just what other people are already thinking if you want people falli g over themselves to pay you for your thoughts7
*random person in tram witha huge backpack* let's stand in the middle of the fking door, with my backpack towards the door so I clearly can't see if anyone is trying to get into the tram.
What the fuck is wrong with you? There is tons of space and even seats free what the actuall fuck just move along already! Jeez. What's wrong with people! At least stand at the side or something.
That's a new kind of shit. Don't get to see this every day.3
Anyone else get super pissed when people go out of their way TO LEAN DOWN to look at your phone screen, especially when you don't want them to? I'm on devRant minding my own business, and people will FUCKING WALK OVER AND STARE AT MY SCREEN, and then will START ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING, READING, WHAT WHY WHEN WHERE HOW! Why, the fuck, do people think this is ok? Then you get that one guy who decides to fucking start asking me about what I'm on as I am reading, obviously busy (what are you reading? Rant? What? Hey what is this? It must be Reddit. Reddit is better. What is on this app? This is stupid. Wait no, go back- you upvoted that? Why? So what is this again?) Or how about when you're texting or writing an important email, and someone fucking walks over and stands there and starts reading?! The hell? Am I the only one that this makes want to punch a wall (or the person)?2
Why the fuck are there people in power (management positions) who are a bunch of scumbags and have literally 0 amount of trust left in their bodies? What the fuck is up with that??? If y'all have freakin issues with your subordinates, and don't trust them that they can do their work, FUCKING 👏 TALK 👏 TO 👏 THEM 👏 STAYING IN YOUR PETTY PITY PITHOLE WONT FUCKING DO ANYTHING. YOU HAVE ALREADY ACCEPTED THEM IN YOUR COMPANY AND THERE IS AN ALREADY EXISTING TALENT/RESOURCE WAITING TO BE USED BUT YOURE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM THEN IDK? IF YALL COULD JUST TALK TO THEM THAT WILL BE GREAT.2
Oh boy the schools in the Netherlands have began again, the amount of people in the train is insane... (Also one of my biggest annoyances is) the way how people pile on top of the check-in checkout poles... They try to do it as fast as possible, but because it is an unstructured pile of garbage... It takes way too long...
Is it so hard to stand in a line and just keep your card STIL AND CORRECTLY INFRONT OF THE NFC READER!?
apparently it is because I see people slamming their wallets against it, moving it around wildly and keeping up the line being Angry why the reader can't detect their card... In their wallet, probably between multiple other NFC cards within a second (BECAUSE YOU KEEP MOVING IT FROM THE READER TO THE FUCKING SCREEN!!! WTF)2
people that answer a question with another fucking irrelevant question should have a special place in hell !!
why dont you just answer the fucking question when in the first place i asked you politely and nicely !!
the question doesn't even deserve a fucking follow up question in the first place !!
you've wasted both our time with your stupidity!!8
@Gerrymandered recently posted a rant, https://devrant.com/rants/1003724/..., and his reasons, which I won't really go into much, are completely legitimate.
We were talking in class and he was getting annoyed with people hating others for actually trying to defend the different flavors or Operating Systems. I've gone into it once or twice, but I feel the need to again. I'm actually going to be blunt this time, unlike my last one:
Linux has its niche. If you like it, then it usually works.
Windows has its niche. Businesses ***typically*** choose it first (with few exceptions, @linuxxx don't even bother coming in here to defend Linux. Love ya and all, but you really piss me off sometimes. Just saying.)
macOS has its niche. If you're a designer, try it. You might be surprised.
Can people shut the fuck up with the constant bashing of every single OS in existence with a focus seemingly on Windows? We get it, the dev community LOOOOOOOOOOVES to fucking hate Windows. Who doesn't? It can be broken as hell, but for a lot of purposes, it works. If I want to use Windows, then let me, and if you complain that because I'm a techie or anything that I can't use it, please go fuck yourself with a moldy rusty fork left out in a hurricane 20 years ago.
That is all.10
I don't wanna ask (insert search engine of your choice) but devRant today:
How would you define a
Is it an insult or status to be proud of?12
In this era, information is much more precious than money itself.
I'm not saying that information wasn't as important back in the days. It's just, at present gathering information is much easier than it ever was!! Especially on people who spend more time on mobiles phones and computers.
Formally stated, Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As we're consuming information continuously, going through so many webpages, laughing at menes that are relatable and using apps that we need to perform day to day task. We're also providing information that we don't realize doing. This adds up to determining out individual personality.
One can never be too careful to prevent all these, but we can still minimize the damage.2
Waited 6h with friends for a light show to just leave 15 min before start, because I was too bored and there were way too many people... Right now enjoying with headphone and noise cancelation jazz in the train back home. Programming made me way too awkward... 😐3
Right now I'm in drama club and we're off stage. I forgot to bring my McBP laptop, so I decided to use the school computer. As soon as I opened terminal (Homebrew profile) people started fucking freaking out, saying that I'm going to break the computers.
Do we actually know how many people there are on devRant?
Just wondering to see which percent of the community liked the top posts.11
Turns out I'm terrible at meeting people. Go figure, it's the cliche of being a dev.
I just moved into a pretty nice apartment in a nice area, but I I know literally nobody here aside from coworkers. The only friend I have left that hasn't moved away is in jail for a good while. 😧
The only place I can think to meet people is at a bar/club - which isn't really my thing. Even then, just walking up to a stranger and striking up a conversation just seems fucking weird to me.
Anybody have any advice on making new friends in basically a new town?15
It's so nice when kindness is retributed...
When on a flash shopping for wood, to fix my chair. Found out that the shop was way cheaper than a big chain I went a few days ago... Like up to 2/3 and 3/4 cheaper... Well, spent 1-hour shopping in such a small shop.
Meanwhile, started talking, telling what I'm doing with the wood and the tools... and eventually asked if she had any leftovers because I would use them.
A little more shopping, a little more talk and she asked, what will you do with the leftovers??
I've started talking about my new hobby, then the why I started this hobby (burn out), and that I'm making machines and tools with the stuff I'm buying...
Left with a big box full of leftovers, even a catalog with fine wood, all the same size...
It's nice when people reward kindness with kindness.
Also, gained a new costumer, never shopping anywhere else again if they have it.4
You know what bugs me the most? When people make their code fast and efficient, but not updatable. Like if I want to add something for my program to look for I'd rather just put another item in an array than modify/add 30 lines. Jesus Christ people.1
You shitty brat, if my HR staff didn't call you, they didn't call you. Still don't understand? Ok, simpler explanation. Because THEY DO NOT WANT YOU.
Just because we know each other doesn't mean you will get hired at my work. And you are not even a developer, you are a freaking sales man. Why the heck do you keep asking me about it?1
A dev found a bug I created where I set a SQL parameter name to @OrderID instead of the expected @Order. The standard is @OrderID, there is one stored proc where it's @Order.
Oops...I didn't catch it because the integration test didn't cover that area of the code. My mistake...I should have checked...I take complete responsibility for the screw up.
He let me know by email..
"When refactoring, from now on check the stored procedure parameters, there are a few that don't follow the standard."
I was like "from now on..."? ...wow....bold comment from someone responsible for code that doesn't check for nulls, doesn't log errors, and relies on exceptions for flow control. You wouldn't even have known about the error if I didn't modify your code to log the error (the try..except returned false)
I really wanted to reply ...
"Fixed. From now on, when you come across those easily found bugs, go head and fix it, write a test, and move on. Don't send a condescending email to me, my boss, your boss, all the DBAs, and the entire fracking order processing team. Thanks."
But..I thanked him for finding and letting me know...we're a team..blah blah blah..
I'm just super disappointed in people. A lot of people flaky and not as good as I think they are. I tend to be an idealist, and I believe in helping others to do a net positive. But what I find is that people just don't give a shit about anyone else except for themselves. If it's even a slightest inconvenience to them they won't do it. You ask for one little thing despite you helping them out a shit ton, and they won't do it for you.
Also, I'm so tired of people who always come up to me and talk big game about how we should work on a project together. But when shit hits the fan and I say let's do the work they don't do anything. Or I have to drag them along to get anything started.
Yeah, everybody is out for themselves, but I wish we were more kind to others and learn to take a hit to our own convenience every once in a while.
But maybe I should just find a better group of people to hang out with and fuck you all to my current group of friends. JK.
I'm going for a run to clear my head. Hopefully after I come back I'll be in a better mood.2
People these days...
At a bakery 3 girls didn't bother to clean up after themselves although the only thing left to do was to t aske the tray and dump it's contents into the trash can WHICH IS ON THEIR WAY OUT. Yeah but have enough time to cake on rediculous amounts of makeup...
Someone literally shat at the tram stop at the main station so whenever took leave the tram you might just step into it.
Then there are always those religious people trying to hand out pamplets about how great their religion is and how much it is helping- they stand right next to a crippled homeless begger.
I don't profess to know the whole story, but what is it with the (what seems to me to be) overly-fragile, cry-bully mentality of the Node.js community and its various branches? The current mess is not the first time strongly opinioned, overly zealous loud-mouths have driven the ship.
Throughout the history of time, teams/groups of people have been made up of different characters. Some are nice, some aren't really and everyone has varied characteristics. There seems to be a drive to completely flatten the behaviour, beliefs and attitudes of any sort of gathering, and it makes me so mad. Some people are so obsessed with their ideas of equality, diversity, inclusivity and safe spaces that they can't see how negative and discriminating those attitudes actually are.
I fully accept that certain behaviours should not be tolerated and should be called out. And communities and societies will organically decide what those are.
But when you raise an issue, approach it like grown up and thrash it out to a resolution - don't throw your toys out of the pram and put on a real public show, targeting and scapegoating other individuals when you don't get your way! This is childish and narcissistic. If this is your only course of action, you should realise you haven't a strong argument.
I've ranted here before about how the mainly social media discussions on any subject drive us all to extreme ends. And this is just another example. It's wrong and narrow minded and not remotely progressive - the opposite of what those who should loudest claim to be.3
A message to designers and developers:
please please please stop being so touchy about your designs/software. The final work is meant to be used/enjoyed by end users, customers, clients, young people, old people, disabled people, short attention span people, irrational people, patient people etc. So if they say it's not good enough accept it go back and make it simpler (not necessarily better but simpler) and move on!!
Stop going into defence mode and start throwing your toys out the pram or giving people the silent treatment.
Sorry just been on the receiving end and boy is childish.1
When you start a project with random people and they have no idea how GitHub works, but still push new idiotic changes that make the app become slower and slowerevery hour it feels bad.
But when you ask them wtf are they doing and they answer 'Sorry, I don't understand you' it is an overkill. Wth?!1
These days when I go out with friends for gatherings, it feels really awkward to talk with people. Most times I don't fit in the crowd at all. I feel at home, with my laptop doing something, even procrastinating seems worthwhile when compared to this.
Does anyone feel the same way? Or, it's just a very personal thing?8
I'm kind of triggered by all these social media posters and SEO optimizers and "wordpress developers", it's one of the oldest internet scam "jobs" in my eyes where anyone can do what they are doing, yet somehow they are getting paid absurd amounts of money for who knows what. I'm just triggered by how much these people get away with. And stupid ass "companies" that I see all over first google results whose pricing starts from 5k and they're resumes are stock unmodified fucking wordpress themes that cost 39-59 bucks. WHAT THE FUCK. I just want to make a huge wave about this, this is straigh up scaming people. I couldn't live with myself if I would charge this amounts of money for installing a fucking wordpress theme and uploading a few photos. Are you kidding me. And seo scammers? is writting a 200 word essay with fucking yoast seo optimisation worth a few hundred? IS IT?14
Know what really grinds my gears? The fact that at many companies, PM's and QA people aren't required or expected to have even a basic level of knowledge, making communication pretty unpleasant. Even having a grasp of relevant vocabulary would make things so much easier.
Combine this with the bedside manner of a barn-raised sociopath, an ignorance of human and technical capabilities in general, and we have several good reasons to stay at home "sick". What the hell do I keep getting myself into?2
Sometimes I like to see how the other side live and just watch people in a computer store.
There are the nervous tip-toers who don't want to attract attention. The point and lookers, who read the sign and nod and show they understood.
There are the ones who just wander aimlessly trying to look like they know what they want.
Finally there are the 'expert helpers' who know enough 'techie' words to convince anyone around that they know what they're talking about.
It's like a people zoo.1
While waiting for the subway to go to work i was checking my emails on my phone, an old man approched "u young people are only using those phones for facebook and useless stuff , find yourself a job and blablabla.. " how can i tell him i'm a mobile developer ... :/2
I can't get any shit done when trying to work in a public place, like in class or at Starbucks or frankly anywhere where people can (and will) look at my screen, as they'll inevitably think, "what the fuck is this guy doing?"1
So... I let people around me who see me programing assume what they want to about my abilities, so when they asked if I could hack I decided to play a joke. I said "give me your phone and I'll show you your files and make your phone display a white for a few minutes" (phone was an Android with no lock on it), I do all that as I had an app that closed itself already built for other reasons... They said "cool, now hack that guys Facebook" .... people are gullible...
is it just me or are others also noticing that our society is getting similar to the one seen in Idiocracy [the movie]?
I mean... I'd understand one or two dumb things: people do it, realize how stupid it is and move on. But now it's more like the other way around: people do something smart, realize it, undo it and move on.
Has anyone else seen Idiocracy?22
People just annoy me. I don't feel comfortable around them.. they don't understand most of the things I say and I hate listening to them because they usually just don't get to the fucking point.
I really think that most people are just not able to think efficiently or logically.
When talking to smart people, I really enjoy it and am able to have discussions with them that last for hours..
Is this normal or am I just "special"?4
Not promoting any app, but people should care more about what they use. The most used services are the least secure8
Next time when you are building a website make sure you add some polyfill for the dinosaur people
# We don't officially support any browser that doesn't have
# requestAnimationFrame. But... we had one very nice person
# write in who was using Opera for Linux (latest version was
# released in 2011, what). It doesn't hurt us to polyfill
# here, and if we don't then dinosaur people will just see
# a big blank Trello.
I've been learning java back end web since November last year. A month ago I've tried JS/React and have fallen for it. All my back end guys are hating on me now, because, as they say, I'm not "an intellectual" anymore but a just JS pleb 🌩️🌩️
Wrong people to talk to i guess :sigh:19
Trying to re-type a massive essay I lost because the app refreshed for some reason. I'll try to keep it short (spoiler: I lied).
Recently, I had a conversation with a couple of non-tech people about AI and the fear of computers making humans obsolete. I have some strong (borderline ranty) opinions about this, and thought I'd post here to see what reaction is get.
This is not a "machines will destroy us" post, it's more about the very legitimate great of losing jobs.
- AI is a tool. It's main use would to be help optimise the more complex routine tasks and free up people's time to be more creative in their jobs. Basically, it's the next step of automation.
- Human intuition can never be replaced. Sometimes, things just seem a bit off. Sure, an AI would avoid ever getting in that situation, but only if it had learnt it in the past. A human will always have to be at the helm of any such system.
- Achieving true intelligence and sentience is like trying to travel at the speed of light. The closer you get, the more challenges you face.
- Getting hyped by sensationalist news that claims the end is nigh because two computers optimised the language they used to communicate when trying to reach a goal is stupid. All this shows is that the tech is working as expected and the systems can optimise on the fly. To me, this was a pretty awesome moment.
Now, I'm not saying dystopia is impossible, neither am I saying that it is inevitable. Just like any tool presented to us, if we use it responsibly, we can make life and society a lot better.10
Oh, my worst dev experience.
First of all everyone know it, people who ask you to repair there computer 🤦♂️
Or people who say: "Hey Windows Media player is not working now. Fix it"
But the best moment and worst too is a moment where I present my new website and a friend start to refresh the site with F5 on his browser. I ask him why he do it and he answere "Yeah, you will be rich when I do it"
I don't get it. Why rich? So I ask him and he answere that websites are paid by web request an "clicks" "views" counter.
That was the stupidest thing I ever hear. Okay when I would show ads than maybe it's "true" but without them🤦♂️
But that's not the end after I explained him that it's not so he fucked me up that I would be very stupid because I don't register on a service which pay you for it. I explained him that the only service could be an ad service but no he don't understand it and try to discuss with me that a service like this exist. I ask for a link to the service and he could not answer.
For me it was the worst experience because for me it was the most stupidest thing ever and he try to discuss with me and really we discuss 1 hour about it🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️3
This is more of a story than a rant, but it has some rant-ey elements, so whetever...
I work for a pretty big company. Several departments, teams, many different markets...so it's a big orchestration. The programming department (aprox. 5% of all employees) is the core of the whole company, because everybody else uses software we've written...(a bit off topic, the point is there are a lot of people)
So today, I got assigned with a side-project. The project spec arrives, and as I read through it, I start realizing that upper-management whats me to build an app to fire people instead for them. The app is supposed to track salary, connect with Trello (for departments that use it) to track finished tasks, track sick days, work attendence...a lot of stuff, and at the end, if the situation requires, spit out a person that is of least benefit to the company, to be fired...
Now from coding perspective, this will be very interesting and fun to build, but from a moral standpoint, I'm a bit woried...simply because, indirectly, I'm firing those people. Because, the way I tune the the app(specifically the algorithm that weighs the value of an employee to the company) will cause certain people to get fired...
So I'm woried I'm gonna have a small breakdown when the app goes live and I see someone saying goodbye to theie colegues of something similar...heck, the app might even spit out my name some day(I should probably add a tiny if statement somewhere in there :) )
What do you guys think about this, from a moral standpoint? Would you be okay with building something like this?
(Sorry for the long post :/ )8
Internet Explorer decided to overflow something outside of a flexbox.
overflow:hidden suddenly makes Internet Explorer actually wrap the text, as it does in literally any other fucking browser.
< nah I'll ignore that.
< Oh shit, let's wrap the content!
Ugh, I really hope that people stop using this crappy browser in the next five years.5
I have some people trying to access to my accounts from far away.
I think my password have been leaked :|
Learning React Native tonight, and I find this gem in their tutorial... "In accordance with the ancient traditions of our people, we must first build an app that does nothing except say "Hello world"."1
Yesterday I went to pool campus recruitment drive and there were 3 rounds
1. Written aptitude test
2. Group Discussion
3. F2F interview
Cleared first round and got selected for second round out of like 80 students. (15-18 got selected)
Went to group discussion first topic was "Donald Trump Administration is threat to IT for Indian or not" and the all were saying he stopped giving visa to Indians, there is no opportunity for us there because of him and I was like wtf... And they think because of Trump, Indian people from Infosys got kicked out hahahaha wtf is this.
Second was how AI and Digitalization can help in growth of nation.
And again those girls hahahah one girl said by using AI we can make new technology and can explore galaxies. What the fathafucking fuck!!
And YES THEY GOT SELECTED.
(Whole HR team was non technical)5
When one of the random people working in the call center you have never met, starts the conversation with:
"You look like someone that follows bitcoin"
What ever happened to "hello"2
There are 10 kind of people:
-those who will not get this at all
-those who expected 10 to be in base 10
-those who are used to the joke with 10 in base 2
-those who will think 10 is in base 6
-those who will add kinds of people and say that my interpretation of "10" was wrong (a subset of those will make the second group be rigth)
-those who will help me to find a way to recursively break this joke (pls, help, i can't find it... 😭😭)3
Sometimes it feel like I'm being awkward, not awkward to normal people but awkward to awkward people. Something Like double awkward. The irony is that, I fucking know I'm being super weird. I just prey for that moment to pass as soon as possible.1
Oookayy, to continue from my previous rant, I kinda feel like living inside a slapstick comedy for the last 2 days, not the good ones at that, the ones that left you with vexation, so to summarise I'll just put the amusing conversations from the "team" for the last 2 days
On a side note, the team consist of 16 people divided into 2 squads, I'm still moving back and forth between the 2, and most of the time I just keep my silence,
*roll the intro,
- PO = product owner
- SM = scrum master
- D = dev
#1, "sloth, procrastination and ignorance"
*a dev came by to ask for some question
D: uhh, can you help me with this?
Me: sure what is it?
D: I want to be able to do this, so that it can be like bla blah blah
Me: ok, let me see, maybe you can do like (give a crude example on my laptop), there, let's try it, aand, it seems to be working, there you go, something like that
D: ahh I see, ok,
Me: well, ok
D: can't you commit the change and push it?
*seriously? It's just a crude example for you to follow, not a final answer
Me: uhh, it needs some cleanup, but you do get how it goes right?
D: I do but... the code is there so I don't see why we shouldn't use it
*because you need to fucking learn how to write it yourself
Me: and like I said, the logic could be better, here, you can peek and retype it (sheesh, like teaching a middle schooler)
#2, "Don't you have anything better to do?"
*in a morning "meeting"
SM: okay, good morning everyone (it's 10 AM), there is something I would like to discuss, first is our attendance, based on the company policy, our attendance should be 8-5, and I see some still arrive at 9 and some at 10, So I want to propose that we all committed to come earlier, say, like at 8:30
SM: because there are instances when someone needed something, some people are unavailable,
*fucking illogical, it's your lengthy meeting that needs to be fixed, this one later goes on for 2 hours just to discuss about attendance time
*insert intense discussion for an hour
SM: so we agreed for everyone to arrive at 9, and to enforce everyone to be more committed, I want to put a penalty in place
D,PO: what kind of penalty?
SM: we already have a pool for our "snack money" right, let's put the penalty there, and the amount cannot be just any amount, it should be an amount that leaves an impression, otherwise if it's just a measly sum, some guys would prefer to pay the penalties and coming late
D,PO: well, how much is it?
SM: let's say it's enough to cost you 2 days worth of food, we'll discuss the exact amount later, but it's something around that
D,PO: whoa" wait, seriously?
SM: yes, seriously
*everyone went into chaos for the next 1 hour, and in the end the penalty thing is postponed for the future
*but more importantly, for fuck's sake, 2 hours for a meaningless conversation? And there's nothing gained on top of all that? If this is the way you guys work, I'm starting to question your capability as a human being
#3 "Otsukare sama, but not to you, yes you, fuck you"
*much later at the beginning of sprint retro
PO: okay, first up I wanna appreciate all your hard work, word from the management is that they didn't expect for us to be able to finish our features so fast, for that I would like to give my appreciation to you all
PO: I want to say thanks to dev#1, dev#2, for making it possible, all the tester, ehh, but you (referring to me), you haven't done anything yet, so yours will come later
*what the fuck is that supposed to mean? I just nod and smiled
SM: ah, also one thing, the testers asks for a front end dev for our squad so here he is (referring to me), we finally have an FE dev, and a senior one at that (I have no idea, and never referred to myself as senior), and you, because you are considered as a senior, naturaly we've set a high expectation for you
Me: (smiled) eeh, I'll do my best (to get out of this ASAP)
*it's just been 4 days and you guys already prepared to shift the blame to me, neat,
#4, "The thing that was never discussed"
*in the middle of sprint retro
All: blah blah (talking about future sprint plan)
*fuck is this? retro or sprint planning?
D: uhh, I wanna ask something
SM: ok shoot,
D: next sprint we're gonna do feature X right? Looking back at what we did with feature Y, can we...
SM: we cannot talk about Y, we are currently discussing about X
SM: as I said, no talking about unrelated stuff, our discussion must not stray, we are discussing X
D: o..kay? Let's say, that we implement the same method as the one in...
SM: which feature are you referring to?
D: implementation of Y
SM: why are you still talking about Y? We are discussing about X, we must not stray from our current discussion got it?
D: umm, okay?
SM: good, let's continue with our matter, bla bla (ignoring previous discussion)
*what the fuck?
*roll end credits
"Our supplier asks that you double the number of php child processes for this fpm pool"
"Are you aware, that that would lead to about 100% of memory overcommit, taken the current limit of 128MB/child, and that if a lot of them started at once, the system would probably go for OOM-Kill, which would most probably kill your database, that still runs on 100% MyISAM tables that do not support transactions, and you'd have to kiss your data integrity goodbye, right?"
"Uh... Nevermind then"
I get that some people are not IT-versed, but really... Hire someone who knows what they are doing and doesn't live 20 years in the past, god damn it!
I'm a fresh out-of-college CS grad (in his early twenties) working at a small scale startup and the people in my Engineering team are at least 10 years elder to me. (this is my first job out of school -- ignoring the internships and such)
I have a tough time making friends with them and an even tougher time making conversation which I think is hurting my communication skills in a harmful way.
Don't get me wrong.. because they are so highly experienced engineers, I get to learn a lot more a lot faster and I love that part but I just feel like I don't laugh or talk enough at my office (otherwise, people have to tell me to shut up).
I mean when everyone is not plugged in with headphones and cranking the keyboards, they talk about their wives, kids, and stuff that I have no relation to. Like I know a lot about childbirth and car seats but except being shocked etc., I often don't have much to add to the conversation.
Also, on top of this, after looking at the sorry condition of people throughout my undergrad and my internships, I had decided to not get into the habit of drinking coffee. So, when they go on coffee breaks etc. they don't ask me if I want to come along and the times that I kind of forced myself to come along turned out to be kind of awkward and not something I'd wanna experience again.
What do you recommend? Understand that I absolutely love my job and I love learning so much around such intelligent people but I don't have fun at work. Is this Dev life or am I missing something?
Do you have any recommendations or similar stories of how you overcame this problem?6
I'm in several FB groups for selling/buying IT material, and from time to time I see someone trying to scam other people by selling those "GAMING PC L33TL4z0rz" with 4GB RAM and an GeForce 700GT GPU, attaching some LED action photos and League of Legends / CS:GO prints.
One of the most recent posts, was a guy who was trying to sell his (really old) macBook.
He said it was great for gaming, had an i5 CPU and 4GB of RAM.
Upon leaving my comment on the pieace of shit he was selling and that 4GB was barely enough to run Chrome, I got a shitload of replies saying that 4GB on a mac are not the same as 4GB on windows... So I immediately forgot everything I knew about computers and just left most (if not all) sales groups because I felt that a tumor of sorts started growing in me, a tumor of rage and awe in human stupidity.
Slowly, I started feeling superior to other people, and would immediately regard them as idiot simpletons. And I don't want to be THAT guy, who rolls his eyes every time someone asks a stupid question...
Now, if any of you could please inform me... What is the RAM conversion rate between a windows and a mac ?5
I see people posting pictures of computers (ATMs, ad screens, digital signs, instruments, etc) failing and instead showing some Windows function, update, or the desktop. Makes me wonder: WHY would you use Windows this way? Think of how many product keys you'll have to buy and how many systems you'll need maintain to show a stupid sign? There's GOT to be a cheaper way of doing things like this.4
Seeing some people posting stories about horrible internships so I thought let's post a good one.
At My current internship they treat an intern like an employee meaning having some great opportunities and rights. Having rights to ask anyone anything or question any decision or pointing that you are wrong.
Me: I don't want to work with this product.
Team lead: okay then there are some other options choose one of them.
And more cool stuffs
Knowing a lot but getting chewed out over not knowing some obscure thing or others expecting you to be able to read their minds...smh that or then not responding to questions..so tldr; people, people are the worst part about being a dev.
So I went to a car repair center and asked if they could fix my bike. They said they could but they won't. This is outrageous, obviously a bike is less complicated than a car and they can actually fix it, they just won't because it's "not their job". Unbelievable!
//This didn't really happen of course
//people don't think this is acceptable, but if I won't fix their laptop they are surprised and act the same way. I study ICT (embedded software engineering and cyber security, but they don't understand that so ICT it is) so I HAVE to fix their laptop....
//Non-techies should really learn that just because we can do something, we don't have to do what they ask of us17
i cant understand some people
Why use atom for python development while we have pycharm?
is it about price?
community edition is free and 100 times better than atom.
what is wrong with you?18
These people belong in a specific kind of hell....
I have to bodge several thousand lines of code where this is the standard....
Can't wait till we begin coding the replacement :D1
When some one says Control+alt+delete
It's *alternative*. Freaking *alternative*.1
Honestly guys, I don't like to go to meetups and I'll tell you why:
You just sit there listening to a badly explained piece of the puzzle by some guys who care more about networking credit than the technology itself.
I know there are meetups with real enthusiasts but even then, I find the level of depth very unsatisfactory because they barely scratch the surface on the topic.
You end up leaving the event having wasted your time and your evening, while you could have been out doing something much more fun.
Here's what I do: I look up the meeting details and I see what they're going to talk about. Then, I look up information about that and I study it on my own.
* I get a lot more information than a mere one or two vague words about the topic combined with some silly demo that doesn't really teach anyone anything at all
* I get to digest the information at my processing speed
* I don't have to deal with the stress of trying to make small talk with people I don't know
I'm sure someone has felt like this at one point or another, especially in corporate.2
I hate when people use error, bug and glitch interchangeably. They are all different things people. Stop using such technical words if you don't even know their meanings.3
So I work in a startup as an intern. My tasks are usually done before deadlines. These folks pay me at my due date after reviewing my work. This month again I have completed my task, so I asked for new work. These people are waiting for my pay day. Just a few days before my pay day they will surely give me a task and question me why I haven't completed it on time. Fucking annoying...3
During my presentations in class, when I use terminal to navigate through folders, unzip the presentation and related files and open the presentation in LibreOffice, I'm termed to be "showing off" my skills
Why can't people appreciate the fact that I did all that even without lifting my hand off the keyboard and in one third the amount of time!2
I love the fact that a lot of people here work as engineers contributing to moving the technical world forward. Yet there's so many posts where people are posting pictures of something on their screen.3
I've been meaning to sign up on dev.to for a while now.
Finally started the sign up process. They require you to agree to follow their code of conduct which states that they will prioritize empowering the marginalized communities and in order to do that they will *not* act on complaints of reverse-isms. Reverse (sexism | racism), cisphobia, etc.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is wrong? I'm all for empowering people, tolerance and not getting trolled but outrightly rejecting complaints on topics that seem politically incorrect sounds superfluous to me. Am I interpreting something wrong? (I hope I am because in general I find the community to be nice and positive)3
This might sound like generalisation but the amount of paper people in France (atleast Paris) waste uneccesarily is shocking. It disturbs me to see some jackass printing pages after pages of garbage in the office each time they want to check if a printer is working as expected. Or the professors using huge white sheets to explain shit when the white board is right fucking behind them (to add to it, they use only one side of the sheet). Or literally every single store handing out paper receipts for a 1€ chocolate I buy. Why isn't their a digital alternative? Why are people so not bothered about how much they're fucking the planet just coz they have enough resources to live happily?
If machines ever overthrow humanity, I'm sure they'll do a better job in tidying up everything.4
Some news articles are so dumb! If you ever hear a headline end with "according to science" please stop reading and call a therapist. Seriously, some people don't deserve so many people to listen to them.
You come to me to seek help to clean your mess **YOU** did to someone and If I fix it, it's you who fixed it or else I'm your fallback guy, *claps*
You fucking moron, I was your fallback guy ever since we met, I treat you as a friend, ask to meet unconditionally and all you've ever done to me is to fix Windows installation. FUCK YOU MAN2
I have a dream that one day the sales people will consult with a developer on time and effort estimates before making ridiculous promises to the client.5
Today I was interviewed for the position of SDE at an e-commerce company.
Two guys were in the interview panel.
The amount of attitude these guys had up in their ass was really remarkable. I was not aware that people could store such a huge amount of crappy attitude up in their asses.
Discussions were never open ended, one of the guy was just bragging about himself.
I really fucking hate these kind of people.1
Sorry, but no sorry.
I don't see that it is ok to make stupid of other people. I mean, it is ok for non-IT people/non-specialist/students didn't know that HTML programmer is not a thing or we can't just turn of the problem/bugs if sth gone wrong.
They aren't stupid. They just misinformed. Just smile (or laugh?) and explain to them.
No one is born knowledgeable of everything. We even learn how to walk, how to read, how to program.
By doing mistakes.3
Wat up guys. I want your opinions on how to deal with other devs who have less experience but arrogant enough to take advice or even basic instruction making the project take longer, e.g. insist on doing everything from scratch because libraries are too high level etc.
How do you guys end up not murdering these types of people?2
So, I'm an intern and I'm always eager to learn new things and do new things. I want to give all the knowledge I have to improve the projects at work.
I give a lot of opinions about the projects I'm working. Ways to improve it. I sometimes ask why somethings where done that way, to understand.
My supervisors don't like that.
Sometimes I get very anxious because my life is very fucked up in the moment.
I think no one there likes me.
It's funny because in one of the meetings we had about this at some point in the conversation, I don't remember why, they said that "people are not robots", "people have feelings".
But they are always mad about something I said or asked (meanwhile, everyone else are saying bad things about the projects, about other people, even about HR).
I guess people need to unload their stress into someone.
I just want to finish this internship, get my fucking grade, and get out of this fucking company.
I'm thinking about turning myself into a robot.
A human robot.
I'm only going to say: yes, ok, sure, yes sir, hello, goodbye.
Just work like a robot like they want.4
No experience in web, yet the radio guys in my university are pretty insistent on me building their website from scratch, "because I'm studying computer engineering."
I know nothin Jon Snow!2
FUCK ASUS FUCK service centers
Fuck Asus. My laptop charger was not working and I called them. These fucking people asked me to get my warranty approved because according to thier database they only have manufacturing date. So they said send us the invoice and we will update it So they wanted me to wait 5 days to get an entry updated in their database. 😑😑 After this shit. I have to wait 7 days for a new charger. These people and Thier service it's shit shit shit4
Was looking to do a game collaboration as I can't build most of the ideas I have on my own and as always get stuck with people not being as knowledgeable and not making anything of people who are knowledgeable but look at other devs like scum, and then artists are never just willing to jump on board to make a game with 1 programmer... UGH!
in the hospital with surgery and our deployment goes wrong, so glad I work with really good people!3
It seems now that every weekend all I want to do is just not be around people.
During the week I grin and bear it, the fact that I'm going to have to see, be around and interact with people but the one time I don't have to is the weekend, but that's the time that other people always want to do things.
Why? Why is it so hard to explain to people that a lot of the time, I just need to not? I just need to not be around people, to interact with them in any way. I just want to be on my own, away from it all. Why is it such a difficult concept to grasp?3
So basically I am the computer guy in my office. If there is any hardware or software related problem, I am the guy who fix it or try to fix it in my own time.
Little bit of more backstory. Two month ago we got react native project from a client. My boss asked me if I want to do that project. he knew that I don't know react native but I want to learn it. So I said yes. I have worked over 12 hours per day to work on that project while learning react native ( I committed the final version to git today.)
Yesterday there was a meeting in our office about project deadlines and issue with current work and stuff. In that meeting one guy asked (this guy had personal beef with me) in rude way like why I am taking parts of pc and given other people. ( If there is any hardware issue, I use other parts from pc which are not currently in use. So basically a simpe resource allocation.)
I knew it was a targeted questio toward me but before I say anything, All people took his side. (I did all those repair after taking permission from my boss, so he did not take that question seriously.)
I spend lots of time fixing those problem so people work does not stop and this is the thank you I got in return. I did this over one and half year. Right now I am asking my self if I continue the work or not.
Note: I wrote this whole thing to get my anger out of me. Sorry for typos. I am little bit drunk and I am not good with English.2
a lot of people
Aaron Swartz, Tim Berners-Lee, Ted Nelson, Raph Levien, Nathan Hurst, Linus Torvalds, Bjarne Stroustrup, Richard Dawkins, J.G. Ballard, William Burroughs, William Gibson, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Donna Haraway, BLACK SABBATH
and the list goes on and on1
Again I get confirmation that my trust issues are justified.
In the end, 99% of people just watch their own ass even if they could easily make it easier for others who didn’t do anything wrong. All they’d have to do is caring about them.
I guess especially younger generations only care for their parents, wives and kids. Everyone else is just a means to an end.
It reminds me of the reason why I spend most of my time alone at home in front of my computer.15
Why did I ever move to a cubicle in a more densely populated area? (>_<)
So many people constantly talking. It's like it's a requirement to be loud to be on this floor!2
Working in IT fucking sucks.
Why do people willingly do this to themselves is beyond my understanding.2
Getting predictable... Deadline day and developer takes day off sick. Or day before deadline developer takes day off sick. Leaving it all to everyone else to clean up their mess... Same people every time...1
Background: Got a macbook, A external HDD(2TB) of which +- 1TB was used.
Yesterday i moved all my personal projects from my work laptop to my external, to move to my macbook.
One of my clients(Freelancing) calls asking me to install new hardware, install software and fix OS(Windows 8.1).
I leave work and go directly to said client and he hands over his Lenovo S20 Touch(No CD/DVD Drive).
I install windows 10 and other software from my flash(Already on there)
Good, Everything is ready to go. I go home and finally get to sit down with my baby(MacBook)
Me: *Plugs in external*
Opens Finder, can't find flashdrive
Client: Hey is everything ok with the laptop, no viruses no nothing. Because everytime i insert a flashdrive it gets a virus and i have to buy a new one.
Me: I installed windows 10 on it, it should be fine with defender now.
Heart: *shattered* YOU COULD'VE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE FUCKER!!
i never knew people like this still exist1
I think this is the most used website for me beside stackoverflow
Why people tries to run kali Linux in their android?????
Kali is made for computer not for androids then why so many people like to install it in their cheap android 😡😡😡1
I hate how there are not a lot of people in the real world who know how to code. People really need to start learning.4
Helping out a team, I was documenting some code/processes when I came across several classes that was logging a lot of, IMO, 'junk' that was unnecessary (and I knew wasn't being used in any Splunk alerts/reports)
I offer a refactoring suggestion, simplifying the data being logged, moving the duplicate code to a central location, maybe saving 10~20 lines of code. Didn't think it was a big deal because they were already actively working on the code and it was all new code (nothing deployed to production yet). Sent the suggestion to the lead developer and he responds:
Dev: "Yes, the changes looks fine, but not in scope of the project. Any out of scope work will need to be suggested at the end of the project, reviewed by the team, the project manager and approved by the vice president."
"Out of scope"? Logging data to Splunk needs a vice president's approval? WTF?
YOU PROBABLY HAVE THE PROJECT OPEN IN VISUAL STUDIO RIGHT NOW!!!
Along with the documentation the lead dev said they didn't have time to do, I send his boss and the dev team my suggested changes (before-after screen shots of the code) and offered to do the 2 minutes worth of work (again, this was new code, nothing in production and zero side affects to anything).
I even offered to create the splunk reporting/alerting against the data being logged (another item they said they would not have time to do)
About a minute later the lead dev responds..
Dev: "Those changes look good. I'll have Jake make those changes and we can test the logging when we deploy to dev on Monday. Thanks!"
Of course you will...fracking ass hat.
I'll bet my Battlestar Galactica DVD box set he was going to make the changes himself, brag to his boss how he refactored the code, saving X lines of code..blah blah blah to help *me* with documenting the logging portion.
Yesterday I asked a question on stack overflow about what algorithm I should use in order to parse command line strings like in gnu getopt for example.. And I've got downvoted for no GOOD FUCKING REASON. On top of that, my question is on hold. WTF?! For some time now stack overflow is becoming more and more a community of fucking cunts, arse-holes and toxic people.
" What parser algorithm is best suited for command line parsing? [on hold] "
"I want to write my own command line library from scratch. What algorithm should I use in order to parse gnu style args like in getopt for example ? I mean what's the best way other than tokenizing and parse them in a naive way? Should I try to look at LR, LL algorithms or this is way too overkill?"
"Your question sounds like "I want to do X. What's the best way to do it?". Too broad, you need to be more specific about what problem you're having. (And keep your question clean. No meta-stuff in there.)"
I mean, what more context-specific reason should I add you dense motherfucker!? I want an algorithm to parse your momma's cunt so hard 'till it blows the fuck up. This what you want? You fucking senseless piece of garbage. God, give me a car to run over their fucking internet cable and over their head, too.8
That's funny how I'm pretty sure I had interaction on devRant with people I know IRL, without the possibility to verify. I like the mystery that maybe the guy I saw commenting or ranting is someone I am familiar with.2
I really hate it when people ask me why their program has errors and wont run when it's clearly shows the error in the terminal.
That moment people assume you don't know things because you are generally quiet because they are around their friends. Uhm, I got the job and had to go through months of interviews, tests, video chats, probation periods and got the job almost 3 months earlier than I should and got promoted to a better team, you don't see me trying to demean your job as a call center consultant here around all the developers I know. Just lemme drink my coffee in peace :(
Dealing with clients is probably the biggest personal challenge. I'm not much of a people person, and I find it hard to converse with friends and people I've known for years, let alone clients who are looking for answers for why things aren't working, and wanting you to explain exactly (but in simple terms) why a thing that seems simple is so complicated.
Another challenge, which is somewhat related is expressing myself. This again, stems from not being super great or comfortable in conversations, but as a dev, even among other devs, your opinion on things gets asked a lot. For someone who was used to sticking with the status quo and mostly agreeing with things, stuff like peer code reviews, or giving pointers on how to implement something is a big challenge (but I'm improving)2
maaan its such awkward, if you're chilling on a supermarket parking lot, with your 20mph moped drinking your one end of work beer and also have long hair and long beard 😂 im always thinking the people think im a homeless or something like that.. fml what a world1
Ugh why are people so tight!
I'm trying to sell a $1000 laptop for $600 and people are either not bothering to look at it or complain $600 is too much for a laptop -,-
Added that I'm willing to trade for a Mac of any sort so let's hope that adds something but fucking hell!
Gotta love not buying shit tech and trying to sell it -,-
Btw the laptop has been used for less than 2 hours -,-3
How do you guys handle vile people in life? I think running away from them is not an option. They are just fucktards who likes seeing you hurt and running away from them and follow you, even to this awesome site devrant :/
Aside from the fact that that overconfident , mr. Perfectionist piece of shit who believes he can never be wrong is here , i just want to know a general way of dealing with such people. I am kinda simple guy. I prefer running away from them into place/environment/community they can't reach and ignoring such people to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
But this strategy don't seem to work. I want to know a mindset that i could keep and stand proudly in an environment full of people i hate, without getting affected by them?
I am fucking down to leaving this awesome community. Already using a hidden account for writing this 😞6
Everytime I am in some shopping centre and google maps asks me to add a photo of it because these photos are popular a thought crosses my mind: don't people have anything better to do with their lives!? For fuck's sake.
Does anyone like being the "tech support" at work. Like helping people when they cant send a basic email?7
Why do people have fucking problem when I just wished you for something
Why the fuck do you want to know how the fuck I came to know
And come on I didn't wish some unknown person for something too personal
I wished a professor for the birth of daughter
Why the fuck would you go on a spree on fucking around and sadden someone who just wanted to wish you
I would from now on discontinue to wish anyone anything and not even try to contact someone unless it's my business to do so
I'd like to be alone from now on
I'm not a people's person15
So tired of meeting people in my generation who literally live to just freeload. Like some of us are actually trying to get shit done in life and yet here you are, just being a lazy fuck who for some reason thinks they're still in highschool and need to not give a god damn shit about anything else.
I've basically got to a point in my life where I have no idea why am I friends with someone thinks it's okay to punch another grown man in the balls after they changed a song, get to a yelling match with another person over a boardgame, sit in the one way that will definitely break the fucking couch.
When I'm at your house, and I change the music on the Spotify, you kick me out because I'm crossing the line? Also, they almost kicked my friend for wearing the wrong shirt (it had minions on it, they hated that movie)... The fuck.
Like you want respect, buddy you gotta earn it. You literally live off welfare and your parents and your girlfriend parents money. You are a fully capable non disabled straight white male, who hasn't aimed higher in their professional life whatsoever. I know people who had every sad story in the book thrown at them, and yet they have achieved twice what you did.
And after all of that, you feel like it's your right to be a shithead, and tell others how to act.
Go fuck yourself.2
I hate people. I show them devrant or try to abstract a problem to a everyday problem people still reply with "I don't know computers" ignorant fucks.1
Very tired of people that turn around to me and say “this is sales, you have to know your audience, it’s not based on truth and logic”... basically an excuse for telling outright lies and expecting me to pick up the pieces when reality bites and the lies come back to haunt them, all for the sake of “closing the deal”8
People usually use their phones in portrait mode. People often taking vertical photos and videos. People read books, and every book has portrait pages. Almost every website has unused space on left and right.
But when people see my vertical monitors they all like: oh man, you are weirdo, that's awful and uncomfortable.5
I used to do a job where I helped older people with their computer issues and of my customers once used an actual magnifier to view websites their smaller letters. Both logical but also hilarious, the customer probably didnt know any better!2
Pet peeve? People in the toilet stall talking to someone on their cell while they are downloading yesterday's meals to the repository. Really, it can wait until you've done your business.1
I love to tinker with electronics and different embedded boards. For some guys its like I'm hacking government or something. Why everything is always about hacking with people?2
iOS public beta: people download it like a new gm release. « Why this shit are not working... » 🤯
Can’t wait two month more? Stupid users!1
I get tired of people complaining about rails "magic" it's annoying. Ok we get it, you have never taken the time to understand it's naming conversation or looked under the hood.
I don't understand why some people take computer science as their stream, while they don't know anything in it. Those majority people in most of the universities take computer science seeing other people's rush. In my University 70 % of the people even dont know the ABC of programming. These mad annoying people just ruin the merit list. 😠😠8
For some reason, people think just because I know a little programming I can fix every computer (or phone).
That's the same people that barely know what Google is.5
Right now, most of my friends in whatsapp are doing one of those stupid viral message challenge that is designed to "testify friendships".
This latest one that i got goes something like this: they ask to send one of your pic to them and they will add it to their status. Then you have to also add their pic they send you as your status. Also you have to forward the challenge to your friends.
I don't know who comes up with such crazy stupid messages that is designed to force people change their perception of friendship. It's amazing how simple and gullible people are to such messages.
Spoiler Alert: yep, i also send it to few of my friends just for the heck of it.4
How to deny a "friend" who is asking me to lend some money ( what he is asking is the largest anyone ever have asked me )?
What's the social etiquette here?
I don't have good impression about him.
Few weeks ago, i changed my plans for him so that he could tag along with me to a place quite far away to apply for our course certificate . He delays the plan, not doing what he was supposed to do and had told me he would do.
I end up wasting 3 days waiting on him and finally goes on my own ( how it was supposed to be before I offered him free ride in the first place )
I don't like people who can't keep their words or let alone lie or don't tell you if they are not intending on keeping it.
Now I'm amazed by his nerve to ask money like that.8
Just wanna rant about something in general..
I'm quite serious about time commitments. I can't stand people who change their words at the last minute because all these weeks they were just fuckng around not preparing and doing that had to be done.
For fucks fake, we have been discussing every intricate details of things that had to be done!!
And even worse, they expect you to bear the consequence and delay all your plans for their convenience..
That moment when you are so impressed about someone or something and interested and want to talk about it but you dont know how to even string two sentances about it even after you just spoke to someone that got you interested in it.
Time to spend a few hours getting the lingo down but in short, using python to make a FE to allow users to create a Hermes config file that will be used on Kubernetes to set up clusters of servers on aws to run their version of our platform. My mind is so rekt and i thank the Devops guys for this needed break from the FE where i normally reside. I love working with people that are not only good but enjoy what they do. They make me a better developer myself 👏
This is one of the many vast reasons i love what i do and having a place to share with more like-minded induviduals like yourself, im grateful.
Thabks for reading and hope you have or had a great day. Keep up the good work all and stay focused 👌
Bitcoin is above 10k, to all the stupid people who didn't listen when it was at 4k, don't buy now, fomo will get you rekt.9
sometimes need to learn about how people thinking much more than computer do. like visualitaion your "magic" code with some people want.
Some just know how to talk the walk. Wanna pitch a ridiculous idea but don't know how to execute the plan. I give up on people these days.1
The worst part of being a dev is talking to non-dev people. They cannot understand simple logic. You need to describe things twice or more. They think you should solve the entire problem when they ask just a single question instead of answering this question.
I even cannot understand what those people are talking about most of the time.
We are all a little .. odd aren't we ... With all our quirks...thou that might be because other people are just ... Sooooo stupid
God I hate people...
Was asked to change a few things on one of our websites including shortening a sliders height to give more room for stuff of the page, I did this and now they are complaining about the images being cut off at the bottom. No fucking shit! You wanted it shorter!1
During my computer science degree I met the most brilliant, hilarious guys that I now call my best friends and still hang out with to this day.
I've taken a few other degrees and never made friends that were as good as the ones I made in my cosc degree. By far the best years I had in school were the ones spent hanging out with those guys.
The cosc program was the best place to meet good friends because the majority of us are fairly similar. We'd all rather hang out and game with friends and a few drinks then go pub crawling.
Computer science people are my people.
I have something ethnical controversal in the making. I learned to shut up about the project. That's how i learned people fear and hide a lot1
I never got into IRC but I heard that it is dead by now?
I just wanted to chat about topics or "meet" new people
So any alternative to IRC?3
People around you (especially non-engineers) coming over just to know whether you saw their instant message ping / email to send them a value of a configuration. Or others who just comes in at the right time - when you just got into your utopian magical zone - "just to say hi and catch up". There goes the rest of my day.
Complement that to the instant messaging application of choice of the organization and it's a no-no for productivity. I find myself being invited to random channels only because they want to mention that I did something. I set myself to Away whenever I'm in the mood, but that still doesn't stop people from pinging and sending me notifications anyway.1
