Job Ad says "Web Developer". Requested skills were HTML, CSS, PHP & XML. Go to interview & get grilled about my design skills. Web Developer != Web Designer people! Get it together! 🙄🙄🙄5

Dev: I think we should send Dev2 for some training and certification
Manager: We do not train people or have them certified. When you train people and especially if you have them certified they always leave the company for better offers so we no longer do that.
Dev: So the plan is to have a the company operated by a bunch of untrained uncertified people?
Manager: 😡 You are being disrespectful again20 -
Dude, remote work in a country side city makes me feel like people think I'm a drug dealer or something
I never leave my house10 -
Dealing with non-techy people is annoying.
Dealing with non-techy people who THINK they are techy is even worse.8 -
When I self-published my first indie game on steam and people actually started buying it.
Remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of vodka trying to tell my girlfriend like that lunatic dotconnecting on a whiteboard meme guy, this is really bad because too much people bought it.
They should spend their money on something useful instead of me, I felt like a fraud.
It turned out good in the end tho, made some updates for it that made it better so i felt better about it, plus got a job from a publisher because they liked my game 😃6 -
The most disappointing (not so sure about upsetting) rejection was from none other than Google.
I was ecstatic when Google respond to my application by inviting me to an interview. If I recall rightly I had two pre-interview screenings, two technical interviews, and about four interviews with people. The people were great and the HR person I was dealing with was open that the feedback was all good.
And then the rejection came! I called the HR guy and asked what happened. He said there’s a central group somewhere who approve all hiring and they decided I hadn’t worked for a “big enough” company in the past.
Yet - my potential colleagues and manager thought I could do the job, I passed the Google-scale technical tests … and then some faceless person somewhere says “meh” and that’s that.
It’s not like they didn’t have my resume that whole time, or the opportunity to ask any questions they wanted !
So that sucked.10 -
Manager: Alright, we've decided we're gonna just going to accept PayPal and also credit card checkout through PayPal in the next two days!
Dev: ...
Manager: We can achieve this timeline, right?
Dev: ...
Manager: Alright, awesome to see your motivation! Let's do it!
Dev: YOU ANSWER PHONE CALLS, TALK TO PEOPLE AND 'STRATEGIZE' ALL DAY. YOU DON'T HAVE TO RELY ON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE USING THE APP WITHOUT ERROR. THAT'S ON ME, NOT YOU, SO JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
Manager: ...
Dev: ...rant i love it everyone loves it great startup we are awesome we love it features without error clueless6 -
I fucking hate toxic positivity. Every fucking corporation pushes the notion that "lifE iS aWeSomE, wE cArE abOuT pEoPle" and other such bullshit, and when you point it out, they call you a bad, toxic person.
No, you don't care about your community, let alone the whole world. You're just trying to make people believe that spyware, wage slavery and being fired by a neural network is the norm. You're making money off of those who don't have a choice.
If you account all people, not just American white rich 1%, it turns out that for the vast majority of people life is either an uphill battle or straight up nightmare. People are working in shifts and have no time or emotional resource to spend on themselves. Most of the people can't afford a house or a flat. Even those who can still suffer from mental illnesses, to the point where there are more mentally challenged people than mentally healthy ones. The word "neurotypical" meaning "mentally healthy" is wrong.
You want nothing but to sell your stuff and earn more money off of Chinese and Indian factory workers who work 16-hour shifts. Maybe your life is great, but aggressively pushing this notion is a big, wet spit in the face of humanity.
Fuck you. Fuck your space rockets. Fuck your twitter accounts. Fuck your institutionalized exploitation of the weak. Fuck your products. Fuck your "open source". Fuck your "GDPR compliance". Fuck your offshores, your hedge funds and your tax evasion. Fuck your bailouts. Fuck your ships spilling tons of crude oil, fuck your factories, fuck your slave labor, fuck your anti-suicide nets in Chinese dormitories.
One day, because of you, our planet will become unlivable. You will hop into your fancy space rocket to go to that top-1% elite Mars colony. Nice job.
But I will pray for a solar flare to hit you and turn you and your fucking rocket into radioactive ash.22 -
Yay, another item to tick off the bucket list.

colleague in a planning meeting: so now it's Easter, which in Germany is public holidays on friday and monday
PM: i as a manager would find it great if there weren't any public holidays
yeah not surprised, but thank fuck you're not the one to decide that... some people are trying to have a life^^11 -
People who message “I’m getting a error” without any context or even better the actual error message, no one else can see your screen and we can’t magic a fix, and we’re not f***ing psychic, tell us what the f***ing error is. Or better yet, figure it f***ing out like the rest of us, you also have google - go nuts16

I started to get super pissed off to people saying you don’t need a college, masters degree to get an IT job. Instead go and gain practical knowledge, showing your practical certificates projects is much better than a having a degree that doesn’t prove if you can do the job or not.
Is a degree absolutely necessary to get a job? No, I agree on that. You can tear yourself apart to be known make projects loads of people contribute in GitHub spend maybe years on practicing and creating stuff for your portfolio..
But excuse me what do you think people do in college studying degrees? Are we getting it from the shop in the corner on a Saturday?
Respect people’s achievements and titles. Especially Masters degrees push you hard, make you sweat apart from loads of courses you work at least a year on a practical project, dissertation, thesis and only pass if it is your own opinion and findings. It is not like a multiple choice exam certificate or you study watch videos for few months and create a web page.
Don’t throw shit on people’s efforts and accomplishments without knowing how it is achieved just because you don’t have it.
Yes it is not necessary. Does it make you learn? Yes! Is it practical? Yes! Does it help you get a job? Hell yes! Why most companies look for degrees? Do you think they might know what it takes to get it and the skills and knowledge you gain?
Don’t come and say in IT degrees not worth it without even knowing how to draw UML. Without knowing IT management you go and be a leader later on, no clue on how to manage projects, people and soft skills sweeping the floor.
It doesn’t matter if you are a YouTube celebrity or a president. What does the title say? “Master” now go, respect and digest it! Don’t be a sour loser.
Ooh I am fierce today and not done yet15 -
I feel like devRant is now a study experiment to test how long a software can run without maintenance and how long people are willing to keep using it.16

I am impressed Youtube made this year’s Rewind worse than the last year, it got to the point were people started removing their dislikes from Justin Bieber’s Baby and it went from 10 to 8 million dislikes so that Youtube Rewind 2018 ends up being the most disliked Youtube video in history in just few days with more than 10 millions.. lol7

Eu was sorting out the rules for Carbon Tax.
It decided that private jets, private yachts, and "leisure flights" will be exempt.
Because of course. Normal people are not, and never were, the clients of this system.19 -

One of the guys in my uni group project accused me of bullying, shutting him out of the group, ignoring him and taking over his work. He complained to head of year, I had to have a "discussion" with head of year, welfare tutor and my personal tutor.
For supporting evidence, I brought the message he'd posted in our team Facebook group where he told me to do the thing I was doing. The discussion didn't last long, but it seemed he was unhappy with me asking questions, mean things like "I need a draft api to do my work, why don't we sit down and design it instead of the UI you're working on?"
Conclusion? He "worked on a separate project". Got to the end of the year, the whole class went for pub drinks, someone else came up to me, had been through the exact same thing, exact same person, different group project.
Group projects teach you to hate people.5 -
"It is risky to release an app that depends on APIs that you don't control."
Yeah, dude, we also live in the real world.
Better to say: "Your app should handle cases where the third party API is partially or even totally down."
God, some people, they build a wall of rules around themselves and wonder why their skills don't improve.14 -
start teaching people how and why to delete code instead of teaching them only how to write code
compare functional and object oriented languages as well as high level and low level languages and explain what are advantages of using certain language without going into the syntax
let people do mistakes and don’t punish people for making them but let them explain what happened, if they know what was the cause of mistake it is worth ten times than doing things correctly
mix teams per period of time instead of per project
make showcases how to modify ugly code to pretty one and what are the steps and what patterns people should look after
teach by not showing old stuff but showing where old stuff exists in modern things and why it’s important there and what’s the purpose of doing things certain way instead of flat theory based on ancient examples1 -
Developing at university: What? No you can’t use a template that’s plagiarism!
Developing at work: Hey use this template from a few years ago and try to get it done in a few weeks we’re on a tight schedule and only three people will ever see this we all.1 -
Completely 100% not dev related.
But really I need the opinion of smarter people. Tell me how I don't make fun of the way people look, talk down on others regardless of <whatever>. Try to be as nice as possible to everyone, but the moment I say that I am not attracted to overweight people (women in my case since I am a heterosexual male) am I suddenly fatphobic and hate fat people. First of, phobia means fear, and I can assure people that fat people don't trigger any fear response from my end.
Nor do I disregard them as humans just cuz of them extra kilos. But suddenly because I explain how I can't be sexually attracted to someone that is overweight am I fatphobic?
This shit baffles me.52 -
People on dating apps say they are very pissed off and frustrated when they’re ghosted.
As a developer you get eager calls from recruiters talking for hours. They say I’ll catch up with you first thing in the morning. An HR manager says I’ll get back to you in 14 hours (in 14 hours?? very precise). Even you get a contract offer from a manager who is rapidly contacts and convinces you.
Than you hear nothing, you are left on read.
“Professionals” communicate in that way. They are also getting paid whilst taking your time. What can you say to random people behind nicknames?
I don’t know what I would feel if they get back and I’m zombied. I really feel like unmatching meh.7 -
I tweeted a silly story about how I accidentally hacked my principal's email account when I was in middle school. (Yes, I did say "accidentally". The school network's security was that bad.)
Within minutes I had four replies telling me to contact people on Instagram to get my hacked account back. I guess I said the magic words and triggered some bots.

So fed up with so much today.
- Idiots who have the word technical in their job title and get paid way more than me but are about as technical as my teacup
- Stuff breaking for no reason
- People thinking that I have nothing better to do than look at their shitty code for them
- My own grumpy arse
I would just say I’m sick and go home, but I work from home and don’t want to talk to anyone.2 -
Hello there! I’m back from the /dev/null to rant about how my teacher marked the “the new C# syntax” as a mistake.
I’m really sorry, but this “new feature” is a thing since 2015 - back then, iPhone 6s got released, Barack Obama was still the US president and the only Corona people cared about was the beer.8 -

My boss once decided to employ a team of developers from Ukraine because it was cheap.
I worked with these people (remote) for years and their humuor, hard work mentality and intelligence impressed me.
They became my friends and i have visited them in Poltava many time since.
Please fight for Ukraine! A lot of great devs are there!1 -
My professor asked for some images of cool stuff I worked on for a presentation he is giving. So here is me moving fast enough to cause motion blur :) The code is using the camera to detect people, and then project the bounding box down in the lidar frame, and mask all the lidar points within that cone.
Anyway, if someone is familiar with super fast agglomerative clustering code in C++ (or even python, if it's efficient), please share it with me!7 -
So, I'm trying to process the feelings from not getting accepted for the PhD project I applied for a while back. And it's just unfair. They've recruited people with no publication and less GPA than me. I also doubt any of them would be field-wise more relevant than me tbh. (Wouldn't be surprised if they hired MBA grads) I have all the relevant qualifications that even people working on that project do not have. I could easily get this project going beyond what they are doing with it rn. It's unfair. But it's life. And life goes on.
Am I angry? Yes. Am I disappointed, also yes. They didn't give me any alternative offers either. So I am going to steal the project and finish it so they have to throw all the money they've invested in the toilet.
... If only I wasn't depressed and could bring myself to apply elsewhere again. 🙄12 -
If refactoring scares you, fuck off out my team.
If you keep code in the codebase simply because it took you ages to write it, fuck off out of my team.
Some people must be wishing pain and suffering upon themselves and their colleagues.8 -
!rant Security training at work comes in the form of a serialized TV show where each episode concerns some security topic kind of tangentially and ends with a “REMEMBER… “ followed by the lesson you were supposed to get from the episode.
I kind of love it. A lot. I actually look forward to security training, and I’m not the only one. They stagger the release so you can’t binge watch all the seasons at once and you get three episodes at a time. 😂1 -
WTF is an agilist? Am I a codist now? This crap is getting out of hand. I’m really starting to dislike this industry- it’s the same thing we’ve been doing for years people, you’re just putting fancy names and certifications on top of it now.14

Nothing quiet like the feeling of choking an interview. 😞
Related note. Trying to program with 8 people staring "over your shoulder" (even virtually) is. the. worst.8 -
How is anyone supposed to compete with those kinds of numbers?

Why the fuck do people not change their router admin password!? I was at a hotel today and could access their router admin interface with the default credentials. I guess this isn't purely the fault of the hotel because not all people know a damn thing about security and only use the interface to change the SSID and password of the AP. But why allow them to leave the default password? Why isn't this a standard feature to be forced to change the password :|13

New opportunity coming to the people who try. Got this opportunity, i better not suck at it. Give it regular time everyday to earn atleast some title before my degree.9

I've forgotten how to make friends.
I think I've grown to the point where I can barely tolerate myself, let alone somebody else on a regular basis. Plus, being busy makes it hard to be decent to people and actually get back to their messages and calls.
Plus, I don't code anymore...

Team estimated a huge feature with 60 days. Made a prototype in a day, implemented it in the project the next day. Code looks a lot cleaner than a previous similar solution.
Now it’s 90% done. Should have worked with 2 other people. Oh well, sorry not sorry for that teamwork.2 -
Today's butt hurt sponsor is... Cordova!

How to make your employees feel like shit 101:
Continually praise a small group of people for doing something for a few days that someone else does as their full time job. Call what that team did "unlike anything else in the software development world"

People add you to a meeting 5 minutes before a call and then everyone expects you to answer question🥲😅

I don't wanna hear anyone dismissing college education, specially from people that can't do asymptotic analysis and have no clue what a pointer is. It's not fine. What do you think people spend 4+ years studying for? For this shit? There's a reason why a diploma has a weight, it's not just decoration.
I get it that the american educational system is fucked up and you guys have to pay a shit ton of money for it, but you can't just pretend it's worth nothing.
How diminishing it is to hear people shit on a life long struggle to get where i am today. I had to study a ton to get into college, and I'm still pouring my blood and mental health into my studies, only for some random to say that a youtube tutorial is worth the same.17 -
Working for a startup:

Fuck WFH. I'm so tired of kids yelling. people eating, fucking noises and people leaving their desks for hour, and sayigg I'm sorry I was speaking on mute. Fuck WFH. Everybody needs to get their asses back to the office, and actually do the damn work.
WFH only works if you have kickass passionate people who love their job with an ounce of responsibility.11 -
Not gonna lie I have toxic people in my life and I have caught myself in multiple situations where I behaved differently, did or did not do something just because they were near.
Whenever these people are gone it’s just the most beautiful thing to be able to relax (also in my mind).
It’s crazy what other people do with us and how we can exaggerate all these feelings and emotions. The best thing I can do is to get rid of this toxicity in my life and move on.
Anybody else or is it just me?1 -
A relative told me that if I were actually smart I would be getting other people do development work for me.
He is also very wealthy. Clearly wealthy off the backs of dumb people.6 -
What I learned from devrant:
There is someone, somewhere, that will upvote the stupidest shit.
Which I find both terrifying and humorous. This is not a criticism nor a putdown. I find people fascinating. I also realize that my definition of "stupidest shit" is very subjective. This is definitely the most "fun" forum I have been on in a long time.4 -

Company Motto: “Business is simple, hire amazing people and let then do their thing”
Company Culture: You can’t do that!! It’s really hard and expensive to hire people with those skills! How would we replace you or save money by continuing to not give you a raise if you did that!?1 -

Are my expectations out of whack? If you’re looking for someone in your city, you’re not looking for someone remote. You’re looking for a local worker who just has an office that’s not on your balance sheet.
Is it semantics?

I don't fucking see how others get their stuff through code review, if when I make an enhancement it gets stopped for stuff other people did before me. Like, at this point it seems like I'm spending more and more time refactoring than simply doing the requested enhancements.
I don't blame the team, they're going off of the documentation. But this is getting ridiculous.2 -
Just wasted 2 hours of my life looking through my colleagues code because he decided to build it at the last moment, install it at customer, and then take the day off.

Why the hell is JS so terrible, and why do so many people resort to using is as a back end. So many packages, so many outdated dependencies. My coworkers and friends have heard me rant about my constant frustration with this terrible setup.

Keep your projects up to date, it saves people a lot of trouble in the future.11 -
I really hate sales people. My stakeholder wants to buy an address verification service but is hesitant to purchase now because the dev time needed would be substantial. Now the sales rep has planted seeds of doubt in my SH and SH thinks I grossly overestimated the labor I quoted.
Sales rep is all “major corporations have installed this in a weekend.” 🤬🤬🤬 Major corporations also have more than one developer and probably aren’t dealing with a website that has a dozen address forms that all work differently. Oh, and I DON’T WORK WEEKENDS MOFO.
My SH originally requested a labor estimate for installing the AVS on all address forms and that’s what I delivered. My audit revealed a dozen different forms. I’m working with a legacy code base that’s been bandaged together and maintained by an outside dev agency. The only thing the forms have in common is reusable address fields. They all work differently when it comes to validating and submitting data to the server and they all submit to different api endpoints. At least a quarter of those forms are broken and would need to be fixed (these are mostly admin-facing). I also had to provide an estimate on frontend implementation when I have no idea what they want the FE to look like.
My estimate was 5-8 weeks for implementation AND testing. I wrote up my findings and clearly explained the labor required, why it was needed, and the time needed. All was fine until the sales rep tried to get into SH’s head.
My SH is now asking for a new estimate and hoping for 1-2 weeks of labor, which is what will SH to buy the AVS. Then go to the outside dev agency you used to work with and ask for a second opinion. I’m sure they’d also tell you at least month if not more for testing, implementation, and deployment because you have a DOZEN FORMS you want to add this to. 1-2 weeks is only possible for a single form.
My manager doesn’t work in the same coding language I do, but he read my documentation and supports my original estimate.
I honestly want to ask my SH if this sales rep is giving a very good price for the AVS. If not, are there other companies in the mix? Because right now you have a sales rep that’s taking you for a ride and trying to pressure you all so he can get another notch in his belt for getting another “major corporation” as his account. I don’t think it’s a good idea to be locked in with a grimy sales rep.3 -
all the fun people at my workplace have either been fired or they have left. my workplace is bone dry now3

idk when I became so jaded, but I don't have the patience to deal with a specific kind of people. the kind that are spoiled, are too "nice", in that very corporate way, speak in that nonsense business language, and they all look the same (white, well dressed, plain). the kind of people that consider making slides real work 🙄
sigh... maybe it's a prejudice of mine, but ffs... those people are fake af, and i have zero tolerance for work politics6 -

Judo.
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.7 -
You know who is pathetic? People who turn off comments after they get negative feedback on something they posted12

People should have mandatory lessons in vector processing.
In canteen, after lunch, there were 4 places you could place your trays. But only small, one-way corridor, for one person at a time to get there.
Every person picked the first place and while they were placing the tray, people behind them had to wait. Huge line started to form. If they, instead, always picked the last empty place, all tray places would be occupied for longer and the processing speed could increase almost 4 times.
Textbook vector processing example.2 -
So I met this person via a social platform.
They were absolutely silly and weren't able to hold a conversation. So I, like a normal person, just stopped trying to keep things alive.
Over the years, I have realised and learnt that if a person is interested in being friends, they'd put in efforts and I alone will not have to drag things on my shoulder.
I started cutting out people right, left, and center who I felt were taking advantage of me or using me in some way or another.
I ended up saving a lot of time and energy. I no longer feel drained or anxious about something not working out. Not dragging saved me from draining.
Anyway, they reach out to me again after few weeks and I was like let's give it a try to establish a friendship, because befriending people is my weak point.
The cycle repeats. At first I thought it must be because of the asynchronous nature of the platform so I drop my Telegram Id in case they preferred an IM approach.
I swear in the name of sweet lord, the retard does the same behaviour. So, I stopped communication.
And one fine day, the person tells me that they lack social skills and want to learn how to make friends and stuff.
Very fair point. So, me being me, gave them a few tips and critically pointed out their behaviour on how they reply with a one liner after every 2 or 3 business days.
Absolutely no change in their behaviour. They kept texting me the same.
At this point, I was like why am I doing it? I could find better people easily. Because for me, communication is everything. I cannot function without a good communication between two living beings.
So, I asked them why are they even trying to learn social skills when they barely implement it and don't want to change to which they reply saying that so they can use it to befriend people and network to getter better job opportunities.
I fuck them off.
And fuck such people who have intentions, are not clear enough about it, and play people for their own selfish gains.
And this where another learning I got from @scout is have boundaries.
Why do all good people in my life leave? Damn it! I need those good people back and be friends with them and not retards who cannot even communicate beyond one liner.10 -
I'm just super disappointed in people. A lot of people flaky and not as good as I think they are. I tend to be an idealist, and I believe in helping others to do a net positive. But what I find is that people just don't give a shit about anyone else except for themselves. If it's even a slightest inconvenience to them they won't do it. You ask for one little thing despite you helping them out a shit ton, and they won't do it for you.
Also, I'm so tired of people who always come up to me and talk big game about how we should work on a project together. But when shit hits the fan and I say let's do the work they don't do anything. Or I have to drag them along to get anything started.
Yeah, everybody is out for themselves, but I wish we were more kind to others and learn to take a hit to our own convenience every once in a while.
But maybe I should just find a better group of people to hang out with and fuck you all to my current group of friends. JK.
I'm going for a run to clear my head. Hopefully after I come back I'll be in a better mood.2 -

Brazilian health ministry got a ransomware attack this night.
Why? Not because every city is demanding you to show you're vaccinated in order to go somewhere. Because you have to show it using a 20+ year old system.
Don't get me wrong the UI is nice.
But the servers...
Well, at least I have a document where my shots are registered.
And good luck to us living in this country, where we're known for gorgeous cities (people too) but also for a government that earns 200k+ while working 2 days a week and can employee 40+ people for sitting there and do no fucking shit.
No wonder if you get bad news from here every now and then, it's all true.
The ministries are dumb.
The president is dumb.
And worst. People too.
People don't care. Because they don't know they are part of 94% of more than 200 MILLION that earns minimum wage and strive to live bc the country BUYS things that we ALREADY PRODUCE and have to put a tax to every product to compensate them paying 5x times more to buy in dollars.
Well,
At least I'm not depending on this sucker of government, never cared about it.
You guys deserve to collapse and become poor again6 -
After working with a bunch of people it occurred to me that almost anyone can work and learn for most IT positions. This is something that most people will realize, especially if they work with newbies that learn on the go. There are exceptions of course, but most companies are just making crud apps with their business logic.
What I wonder then is, why is it that the way hiring is done seems to be completely against this idea? Rather than whining about recruiters and bad interviews, I am curious about why this is so common. What is it that a lot of companies think or see that make their hiring process so bad or convoluted?11 -
I am always perplexed by people who write stuff like: "I don't know why people would use Rust, I simply never write code with bugs in it"
Just, lol
Like, using C or C++ is fine of course, but don't pretend you're perfect and that all of your bounds are checked, all of your allocations are freed exactly once and that you never forget to lock a mutex.18 -

I just realized a weird thing. It will soon be 6 years since i joined devRant. And while i havent been as active as i was before its still sometimes fun to come and rant or read some rants :)

Man I'm only 4 years in and I'm so tired of writing bullshit code that no one cares about. How do people do this for 20 years. I don't know. Motivation is at an all time low. It seems stupid to me that instead being out there with the butterflies I am dying staring at a rectangle for days on end. FML.18

If I had to name one attribute that dominates the software engineering ecosystem, it would be “arrogance” especially among young programmers. I think software engineering would be a much better place to work if people were more empathetic than being ginormous assholes trying to have a leg up over all their peers. Collaboration is much more rewarding than competition. It feeds your soul and feels a lot more natural.
Collaboration over Competition.
Have a peaceful day at work guys!5 -

Guys i had a question...do people managers get more salary than developers? If they do then would i ever earn more than them in future and how long will it take for me to earn more money than them? Dont get me wrong, i dont have anything against them, i just want devs who do all these stressful complicated stuff to have more salary than people managers...your thoughts please, thanks11

I just think some people, in some countries, simply lack the culture for the type of communication DevOps requires. Observing from the sidelines I've now seen multiple people complain in different kinds of meetings how teams don't communicate and nobody knows what others are doing and this leads to conflicts and duplication of work. But when it's time to actually build a community where those developers would be able to discuss freely and safely about that work, nobody fucking says anything. Nobody responds to threads, nobody opens up discussion, everyone just shuts up and ignores the community.
Why the fuck are you whining about silos then if you behave this way you ignorant monkeys!?4 -
I have noticed I have had great success using another co-worker as a metaphorical rubber duck (sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally). It improves my productivity vastly. However, I know that it probably distracts others when I am using them in that way.
That's why I want to buy a literal rubber duck and talk to it. I could do it very quietly and most of my close co-workers use noise-cancelling headphones 80% of time while sitting at their desks. My only concern is other people passing by my desk would think that I am weird. My desk is in an open space and several people pass by it every hour. (however on my floor besides developers we have HR, marketing and people from high up who might be unfamiliar with the rubber duck method).
Is it unprofessional to talk to a rubber duck at the office?4 -

I found a vulnerability in an online compiler.
So, I heard that people have been exploiting online compilers, and decided to try and do it (but for white-hat reasons) so I used the system() function, which made it a lot harder so i decided to execute bash with execl(). I tried doing that but I kept getting denied. That is until I realized that I could try using malloc(256) and fork() in an infinite loop while running multiple tabs of it. It worked. The compiler kept on crashing. After a while I decided that I should probably report the vulnerabilites.
There was no one to report them to. I looked through the whole website but couldn't find any info about the people who made it. I searched on github. No results. Well fuck.7 -

The popups on websites pisses me off.
If you try to google something quickly and enter various websites you have to close all popups on each site you enter.
Some websites try to make these popups more discreet by making them small and putting them at the bottom of the screen but then your brain just ignore them and focus on the small content above them.
In the year of 2022 people visit a lot of sites during a day. The human brain is programmed to put in as little work as possible to reach a certain goal so therefor everyone ignores popups.
I know its a law to inform people about cookies etc. But isnt there a better way?15 -
I wish people took concurrency more seriously
I get the feeling that often people start writing a project while giving 0 f*cks about thread safety, thinking that it is somehow handled "automatically" by the framework
Only to discover later that large amounts of their code are not thread safe and were only working fine in the past because there were fewer requests, so the chance for two requests happening simultaneously was low5 -

If you ask any sane person "hey, do you want to get some disease with fever, headache and potential risk of dying?", I doubt anyone will say "yes".
But if there exist a way to prevent it with a proven efficacy from both evidence-based medicine and science, why not get it today? I'm not even talking about covid. Why people are not getting their flu shots? How's that logic works? You mean you don't want disease, but you also don't want to take any measures to prevent it?
Every time in late autumn people get cold. For a sane person, one such case with themselves is enough to say "hey, I don't want this to happen again the next autumn". Yet people do nothing.
I can't understand this.
And this is only a flu. Hepatitis will destroy your liver and potentially will destroy your whole life, so why avoid vaccination?10 -
I feel like contractor companies are crazy overfunded at the moment..
They keep hiring more people to put on the invoices but everyone seems to be working at 50 capacity at most...
I understand that clients rather overpay contractors than hiring people themselves that they don't need anymore in a few months and can't easily get rid of but dude.. I'd gladly do the job of 3 contractors for twice my salary in this current climate.
Not to mention that the amount of hiring brings lots of underqualified engineers with it.3 -

I'm getting tired of coding. Not really the coding part, the dealing with people who tell me what to code and why part. Sort of considering making a move into a scrum master or PM role just so I can get fired when I say "No, we're not changing everything they've been working on in the middle of the sprint" or maybe "Yeah, no we're not going to put in a bunch of tickets to change the UI/UX without first talking to the designers, because that's what they do. Yes, I realize we aren't Facebook, but do you realize we "compete" with them because a huge number of people will compare our usability to theirs? (even if just subconsciously)"3

!dev, just a rant
I got covid a couple of weeks before Christmas. Would have been considered a mild case as I didn’t need hospital treatment but felt really rough for about a week.
A month later I still have a cough, hardly any sense of taste or smell and exhaustion.
One day I think I’m fine and then I struggle with everything. It’s like having severe depression again.
I keep hearing about people having hardly any symptoms and being better in a couple of days. I am definitely envious of those people.
Covid sucks!!9 -
Not strictly a dev-goal, but anyway:
Now that I am responsible for a few people in the company I work for, my goal is to find a balance between managing and dev, and to help them develop their skills, be productive, and enjoy their work. -
Why is it that when people are anal about linting they don't like the default/mainstream conventions?9

Pixel perfect layout bugfixing doesn't even feel like development, it only proves that some people got their priorities terribly wrong if they worry about a 2 pixel margin anywhere. And I do say this as a front end dev who does respect a respect a good design. But still, pixel pushing sucks!7

Why does Google have to buy big billboard ads at the bus stops to convince people to use Google search?

I think I've noticed a human behaviour I wasn't aware of before.
That in any group, there will always be at least one bully..
I had thought once the current bully wasn't in the group anymore, that the group would finally become civilised !
But no, it seemed once the top bully was gone, another would replace them..
I wonder if that would continue until there was only 2 people left in the group ? ( Actually I do remember such a group, and yes, the other one was a bully ! )
People who you had known for decades, suddenly become a bully, why ?
Is it some kind of alpha human behaviour ?
Why can't we just get along without some asshole trying to make our lives more difficult..28 -

For a long time I could not understand how do people put up with watching ads in Android apps. Then it dawned upon me: they grew up like this and they never had a proper classic old-school desktop experience. Back in the day it was unimaginable to have intrusive ads. I will never put up with intrusive ads. I despise it
Now even developer tools have ads, like Docker or NPM8 -
The number of roles you are expected to do these at this company, to be paid for just one of them.
Business analyst , developer, tester, first line support, architect, devops engineer, recruiter.
And you have the cheek to ask us what we need to keep this shit alive.
(Obviously it’s more people but the answer to that is no).
Fuck right off.
I do not care if this company doesn’t meet its contractual obligations and goes into administration.
It’s not my company, I can walk into another shit company easily, maybe I’ll even get lucky and find a good one.
Why don’t you people at the top who are being paid six figure salaries and telling everyone things are wonderful pull your fingers out of your collective arses and doing what your paid for.
You fuckers deserve all that is coming. -

Ahhhh I'm in the mood to make a few complains against the company I work for.
Reason: management is done by children, expensive machines are breaking down due to lack of maintainance, having to deal with problems everyday due to machine problems.
Although that's not illegal, just stupid, there's also bad company policies (like if you get hurt can't call an ambulance, must go to the local private clinic, even if you lose a hand ), problems like pools of oil everywhere, electric boxes open (and we do have to put our hands inside to reset the machines)... Stuff like that.
But fuck it, I'm just a temp gaining minimum wage.8 -

CAN 👏 PEOPLE 👏 STOP 👏 ADDING 👏 `/// <reference lib="dom">` 👏 TO 👏 NODE.JS 👏 PACKAGES
It's a Node.JS package, for fuck's sake. But for SOME reason, sometimes to get around the lack of `URL` and `URLSearchParams` in @types/node, people keep including the *entire* DOM typings in their definition files/TypeScript files!
Sometimes I upgrade my deps in a Node.JS project and find that DOM typings have been added, causing errors when trying to use the global `URL`/`URLSearchParams` (I've shimmed these so that these (Node.JS versions) are in the global namespace). Then you have to search in all your dependencies for which one is including the DOM definitions.1 -

Corporate hackathons are bullshit. I've swore them off. There is no way I'm going to be put in additional hours for so little gain ever again.

I've been in this hostel for three weeks. Near the surfspot, close to the beach, everybody here is nice and loving, there are people from everywhere, we all speak some sort of creole between english, portugese, french, spanish, german, and so on. We exchanged recipe and song, made connection in half a dozens country, and overall had a great time.
But then there's this creep who's a violent alcoholic fuck, made creepy comment about a girl half his age, called women bitches behind their back, constantly using excuses like his mummy, his job, the booze to be a shitty person, hiding himself behind humour to annoy people around but threatened to slit my throat when we did the same to him. I swear to god if he doesn't shut the fuck up this is gonna get ugly.

And smart people actually use the tools they’re most comfortable in to get the job done. At the end of the day, what really matters is how much money you’re making for the capitalists at the top.4

I have the concept of making and selling NFGs to people. I suppose it would use some blockchain. Some initial NFGs I would like to sell:
- I don't give a fuck.
- Don't worry, be happy.
- Live and let live.
- Shit happens.
- Whatever...bitch.
I suppose some good memes could work as well. Not just slogans.
Please add to the NFG collection.1 -
Having a vacation in Italy ATM. Walking around Naples, hoping to see beautiful things, but.. So far the only thought spinning in my head is
while(location.contains("Naples"))
System.gc();
Jesus, how can people live in a dump like this. A full GC is loooong overdue!15 -
> totally disable logging on console
> logging is redirected instead on some 1200 separated files (no, not "log files rotated through 1200 days"; every part of the program has its own log file, and there's 1200 of them)
> still, in all those files, none of them contains MY log; somehow it disappeared
Why some people even chose to become developers will always elude me2 -
It can’t be only me.
Long story short. A second grade classmate suddenly reconnects with me. We talk about this and that, exchange some memories, the usual. 20 minutes into the conversation… she goes: Can you do a website for me for my….
I hate these kind of people, I mean you have a better change just telling me without the foreplay, it’s just making me angry.4 -
so people who are used to automation and ci/cd , how deep you can go? i seem to find ci/cd runners not much powerful than running some gradle commands locally. what am i missing?12

Is it something like, with a great salary band you don't need to go to US? I'm a software developer, I get good money, in India.
There are a lot of people moving to US, the people I think can only take right decisions.14 -
Why does no one stop the war that Russia started against Ukraine? Innocent people are constantly dying there!20

Let me just warn people that if you quit your job but they offer you to come back with a significant salary increase it's probably not the right answer.5

I hate my scrum calls so much. People go into the fucking weeds and the scrum master is so clueless. Doesn't stop them and let people ramble. Jesus christ.
If scrum calls last more than 10 minutes, I think you're doing it wrong.1 -
The ugly truth about PM tools is that they empower stupid people disproportionately more than competent people. "It's the person, not the tools' fault" is a false dichotomy that perpetrates the convoluted workflow anti-patterns, plugins-for-my-cute-charts hell, overload of red herring metrics, documentation fragmentation and overall enterprise bureaucracy that justifies the existence of otherwise useless positions.
-
We should find a way to replace passwords: any password manager which I tried is inaccurate in identifying login forms and is too hard to use for non technical people older than 40 and convince people to not use some stupid name + birth year combination as their passwords is a frustrating uphill battle.13
-
Why why do people bother making so many lazy Stackoverflow spinoffs? Who would ever want to read that garbage low effort websites?9

Because of a previous post today I looked up the cost for these bootcamps. Is really someone out there paying 15.000$ for something you could learn for free ? Why do people do this ?2

getting mogged by people with less experience and/or spending less effort

Every now and then I see people writing fucked up society everywhere. I want people to write here what is fucked up and how do you want to solve it if you have all the necessary powers.5

The new job is sucking all of my motivation away. Been a while since I’ve did any coding just for fun. It’s tedious to even start learning new things after work.. how do you people deal with it?7
-
I always urge people to bring their own story into their social media content. I try to do that as best I can.
Sometimes I’m happy.
Sometimes I’m bemused.
And sometimes I’m just amazed by the stupid stuff I see around the web.
Alas, today is one of those days. I’m not cranky often, but when I am, it helps to just write it all out. Simmer down now y’all. It’s ranting time.1 -
Wow, it seems a lot of people on here hate web dev.
It sounds like they dont know what they are doing 😊12 -
So two weeks ago I said I want to make a website
After 9 days of working 9 hours per day I’m finally done with the basics. It’s a website that’s basically an infinite post board
I’d want to invite people here to test it but I’m also afraid that there might be people just attacking my server. So now idk what to do4 -
Life is shitty till some people work off hours, on Saturdays, ping you anytime. Fuck those people!2

Today, I started a new project with Rails. I used always an own auth implementation, now I thought I'll give devise a try. Hell... the documentation is bad, really really bad. I really don't know why people are using this and don't write this by themselves. Anyway, I kicked devise and write it again by myself.8
-
Working as a Dev for a while now, I tell new people not to bother with it. There is never any job satisfaction as people in charge never understand the basics.
Instead of learning to write efficient code, figure out how to solve real business problems, work towards a maintainable flexible product to quickly deliver value on changing requirements, write automated tests to improve quality, maintainability and prevent live issues - basically do anything a good Dev strives for - you will just constantly end up working for people with no interest beyond the next couple days, on a shit code base that no one can understand, with people that don't want to learn anything about software design and just check boxes off.
Apart from pay this must be the worst career possible in a technical field.4 -
the mistake people keep making when they're happy about some new tech and its possibilities is that they keep forgetting we are being ruled, and the tech is being controlled and monopolized, by a cult of megalomaniacal, narcissistic, powerhungry, moneyhungry, ideologically fundamentalist control freak lizards who give exactly ZERO shits about people, or the quality of their products, or some vision/ambition of making things better for people/humanity.
you think "vr metaverse", and you imagine Oasis because you think it's being made by James Halliday, while, in reality it's being made by a team of Cthulhus so it would be closer to reality if you imagined the people pods that ensure your lifetime connection to The Matrix.1 -
Tuesdays are great days to waste in meetings with vendors that have no idea of what they're talking about. Too bad these people always manage to convince the business side.

I've got a question for people who understand GO:
Why do I get this error in one of my projects but not in the other?
> gopls requires a module at the root of your workspace
Both projects lack module at the root of my workspace, but only one of them refuses to cooperate...
Bother.2 -
Hello, people of devrant, i dont have alot going lately and im always trying to find new ways to make money, im still applying to jobs of this type, please visit my github, if anyone wants to reach me, please do so.3

To get a private company job, you need skills, not books.
To get a government job, you Connections to big people, not books or skills .
To get a scholarship for higher studies, you need books.2 -
i wanna be happy but i think im afraid of being happy, because being sad and alone is sort of comfortable at this point, since im like this since a long time ago. i still feel hurt bcs i feel so alone and i feel like a loser but im able to find distractions so i dont have to deal with all this guilt and sadness, but when things start working out in my life i keep thinking "do i deserve this?" and i get scared and really ashamed. scared of what people will think of me, scared of what they will do to me, ashamed of what people will and do think of me, so i just end up isolating myself all over again and being alone and sad and depressed all over again as well3

In python, is there a way to make this work?
----------
# list of people
people = ["Nick", "Sue", "Bob"]
# class instance
Bob.pockets = ["gum", "paperclip", "coins"]
# convert string to prefix of a class instance
Print(people[2].pockets())

This is the simplest way to show what I'm needing to figure out.
I need to convert a string into the prefix of a class instance.
I'm having trouble figuring it out.7 -
I've just been asked if I can help find a PHP developer. For backend.

Don't get me wrong, I love clojure, BUT, is it really that surprising how hard it is to bring in new clojurists?!?!
I mean,
"oh, people get confused a lot about namespaces, why is that?"
Don't you get it? "namespaces"? Really?, I mean, seriously??? In VSCode days, to call source code paths as "namespaces" and hope people that are still learning about the JVM will understand it is NOT FEASIBLE. Thank God I was already a seasoned vim user before clojure, otherwise I'd give it up pretty fast.4 -
anything humanity invents to help people, after some time turns out it’s becoming tool to control and kill people so maybe stop inventing that shit to help us so we can live2

Job offer, searching for somebody with (amongst others):
- UI/UX
- React, Angular
- Go
- Azure, Kubernetes, Redis
- Mongo, MySQL
- gRPC
Why do they want to fill 3-4 positions with a single person? I'm afraid I'm only 2 of those people they're searching for.8 -
I have decided that massive natural selection events are a thing with humans. When resources appear to be getting low a group of people will prepare and wipe out a large portion of consumers. The most straight forward way is to create a crisis and then offer the "only" solution. Make that solution a weapon and you are done. The masses gladly accept the solution. At all times appear benevolent. Silence dissenting voices swiftly. Make the dissenters look like nutters and publicly humiliate them and apply labels to them. Labels are effective because it creates pariahs. People like to not be singled out and called names.
What do you end up with? People who distrust government and the institutions. I don't know how this benefits the orchestrators (how to spell) of the genocide. Perhaps if the numbers are small enough they can just be rounded up and killed by force rather than coercion.
I get the feeling this approach has been used in the past. Like it has been at least tested on smaller scales. Maybe even on past civilizations. Did we learn to do this from space visitors? I wonder.
2021 has certainly been an interesting year. I used to think people were just stupid. This year has confirmed that for me. But I am not sure stupid is the right word. They are certainly book smart. Maybe naive is a better word. I pray and hope 2022 turns out better for people. Maybe they start seeing signs they have been lied to by people they trust. Maybe not. When you are in the matrix it is hard to see through the facade. The matrix feels very real, until it doesn't.
Dev Goal?: To not be murdered by the matrix.8 -
I can see people who fight biological limitations and deny dogma from a mile distance. They shine from within.
If the immense work of creating a full map of pathological automatic thoughts is required to beat anxiety, I will do it just because it constitutes pure, conceptual beauty and the idea of reasoning beating primal biology. When I look in a mirror, I see myself shine.
There are no limitations to personal development other than laws of physics.1 -
Another first world mimimi but still an obstacle when just wanting to get work done quickly. I don't know what's more annoying: the multi-line pasted styles that used to be useful one-liners, or the fact that the top search result for this issue was closed/locked without even linking to the appropriate Chromium bugreport?! People report that's fixed, but the fix did not land in Vivaldi yet. Maybe I should consider using Firefox as my default browser again.1

i don't really care.
plusses abd minuses, comments and reactions.
none of it affects my shitty life in aby way, sane as nothing else does.
everything is a Skyrim quest. paper flat cutout pretenses of people trying ajd failing to convince me this is a life, this is reality, i should care.
failing.
it's all just subpar pretense.4 -
I am hearing reports from less computer savvy people that some Apple devices will refuse to charge the battery if updates are not applied. Supposedly as a way to strong arm users to update. I cannot find anything on this when searching.
Has anyone heard of this?9 -
ffs man, is there a better way to make money online that doesn't involve dealing with people as often? just a lil less stupidity and streamlined work~=money would be nice.
rhetorical, unless somebody knows6 -
Some people try to talk by changing their accent to look cool.
And my mind every time is like - man stop that and try to change your mindset first.1 -
I’m unnerved by the number of people printing money in their basements using graphics cards. We have a global inflation problem and a semiconductor shortage. The cherry on top is that our solution is to make more semiconductors…6

I wish I could be paid by task, that would be the most flexible way.
Any idea? I know there are some web3 / FOSS projects that are incentivizing people to work on their issues that way.11 -

Since there are less people around can we lower the requirements for the free stress ball back to 100++?
I know I can just buy one but earning one is so much better 😁4 -
How do people make well organized js backends? I've been using express for a long time for simple backends and messing about with APIs but I can't seem to organize it in a way that feels efficient enough for my standards. I'm wondering if other people with lots more experience than me have either resources or rules that help them keeps these kinda projects organized.8

I've been at my new company for about a month. It's a startup that went from a dozen people last year to over two hundred right now. During the dot com era, that type of growth typically spelled disaster. It's crazy how many people I've met have only been at this shop for one to three months. Everyone is 100% remote, across multiple countries, and vast timezones.1

thoughts on apply to the same place but different roles?
i imagine different people will see your resume? never been that far up on that side of it though. does it get consolidated and it's only one person? do multiple people notice?4 -
Did you know 2021 saw 44 unicorns startups? For people who don't know what unicorns are, unicorns are startups having billion dollar valuation. This made me wonder about startups with no revenue, how are they valuated? So researched a bit on it and penned down my learnings in this article.

Stack overflow people are all so fucking annoying, but every now and again you get a rare gem that ACTUALLY helps you, and doesn't just close your question for no reason or downvote without an answer. Like, I'm sorry I didn't spend my entire like learning computer science, I just have some questions!3

Back in the day when I was a student, I travelled for almost 3 hours by train multiple times per month... I played Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 on my laptop all the way. Surprisingly, even while wearing large headphones, I connected with many people who saw me playing a game that they loved.
RCT2 remains a brilliant game today. The OpenRCT2 project is very well maintained and I can highly recommend it if you want to play it on your modern computer. -
When people write functions/methods with bodies smaller that the call header (-_- ).
Function calls are not free people! Just Inline that shit manually (or at least make sure the compiler does so)!

I like to switch up my Google Meet and Zoom backgrounds. Keep people guessing where the heck I am. I’m a remote worker. It definitely messes with some people. Both the backgrounds and the permanent WFH thing.

For me, at work, it's very important to have an inspiring figure with whom I can interact and in lucky cases, get to work with.
I recently changed companies and in my previous company, inspiring people were left, so left.
Now in my new company, I have met 5 6 people and not finding anyone inspiring enough, everyone is young, I am also only 27 but still I'm an old soul. My manager is young and he's chill person but I'm not at all inspired by him I don't think he tries to charm anyone anyway. All other developers too in the team are just meh. Product is good, so I'm looking for work but losing the motivation to do good and better each day as I don't have anyone I want to become like.

People are like programming environments, in basics all people are the same like all programming environments are the same, every programming language have a loop and conditions, numbers, strings and dates. The problem starts with syntax to write code or can you call it communicate with person. There are syntax errors, someone use functions and classes and that’s ok but someone is writing everything in one file and then it’s hard to communicate or change something. But the real problem are libraries or you can call it believes. Everyone is believing something but when you start using it and want some advanced functions there’s always something missing. When you want to contribute to fix that stuff you often can’t cause it’s closed source or maintainers are pricks. You end up writing wrappers and decorators, ignore malfunctions to somehow live with that problem. That’s called social skills.
We’re just programming environments. That’s all.2 -
When a product owner starts explaining why the team needs code reviews, instead of the team, that's when you know that the organization is fucked up and business people are the ones setting up checks and gateways for "quality assurance" .. Sure, you need code reviews when 90% of the developers don't even know what automated tests are. Hopeless morons!1

as my first rant here I thought i'd start with one of my favorite relevant quotes:

Hi.
I wanted to ask this and didn't know where else to ask. How can programmers help the ukrainians, in other ways than donations? I'm specifically looking for programming projects to be implemented, that could in any way help these people.
I currently don't have the circumstances to help with monetary donations, but I want to help them somehow. Do you have any ideas?
Perhaps other people with extra time, like me, could also take some ideas from here and implement them.5 -
Hey people, ive had this question and it had been bugging me for a while now. If A^B, then A, if AvB, then B. What does that? What kind of problem is similar to this problem? Also, it it a contradiction, if so, what kind of contradiction is it? Does it have solutions, if so, what kinds of solutions?1

Join has the effrontery to send me reminder emails to fill in the same details already contained in the resume I uploaded. What the fuck is wrong with these people?1 -

There's a special place hell for people who put their entire documentation on using an NPM package in the fucking READ.ME file.

Meta made Horizons World open to all people that have Occulus.
I don't but watching a YouTube video all I can think is that the avatars and world look like the Wii one years ago... And well no better then mobile.
So would be better if they just used the anime art like Genshin Impact or Breath of the Wild...4 -

Hey, have been having several job interviews, does anyone have any advice on how to approach being interviewed by people from India, have been doing a lot of job interviews for a lot of companies in the US and seems like I'm interviewing for a position at India, it's very difficult to understand them and often they get offended when asked to repeat themselves... I try to be as positive and optimistic as I can but often poor audio on their part and very thick accent makes it difficult... any tips? this happen to more people? am I the only one?
Thanks...5 -
Does anyone find any value over doing paid courses online vs just watching youtube videos about the content?
