So there was an inspection from government for our bank's IT security. I gave a tour to our server and security systems. I threw all possible acronyms as much as I could remember. Inspector nodded and noted down never uttered a word.
Finally, he breaks his silence, looking at a device he points out and says "What's that ?"
I look at the device then stare at his face back again at the device and to his face I reply "That's AC, Air Conditioner".19 -
I thought i'd see what the avatars look like with different color eyes.
I personally like red. It really brings out the undying hatred I have for my peers.9 -
>get hired at new company
>so big nobody knows anybody
>buy ancient company swag on ebay and put it at your desk
>everyone thinks you're a ten year26 -
devRant should add a polls feature for simple questions with yes no answers or what version of linux people use etc maybe?18
-
New devRant swag! Hoodies (zip-up) for all your fall/winter sweater needs: https://swag.devrant.io/products/...15

Expectation: arrive at work, everyone in awe of devrant swag, social status++
Reality: arrive at work, prod failing, get blamed, employment status--7 -
Picture taken in the dark but that's how I like to work. In darkness. Illuminated by just my awful code.9
-
Got some swag in the mail today.
I was told I could get a refund for the hat if it was too small. I literally have the biggest head in the world and it fits me fine.
For those who complained, did you try taking it off and on again?6 -
Swag store feature request:
I can't wear any of the shirts at work with current dress code rules. Any chance we could get some polos or golf shirts with a small, embroidered ":/" on it?
I'd buy a week's worth of those.3 -
Was watching a Chinese movie and there's a scene where someone is getting hacked, and this is the fucking code that they are show as the "hacking code". How hard would it have been to find something more legitimate than this?
If I hadn't had a few $0.69 hamburgers from McDonald's today, I would be more upset.15 -
I came home today to find my wife wearing my hacktoberfest shirt... She said it was soft and looked girly so she was stealing it. At least I still have the stickers.8
-
Well, that was fast! 1 week for international shipping (Canada). Thanks dfox and trogus for the awesome swag (and for making an awesome app). Didn't even have the time to finish my 3d printed ball before I got the real one :P10
-
Somebody asked me my API doc.
I don't have any API at all.
I will lie, and I'll write a swagger specification in few hours and I'll send them.
They will try to read it and understand, and after maybe a week, when they will ask for testing and endpoint I'll pretend to be on holiday for 2 weeks.
3-4 weeks gone already, I checked they should be on holiday by then. Only then, I'll answer with a fake endpoint with fake data.
I'll get another 2 weeks if I'm lucky.
When they discover about fake data, I'll say there is a bug.
In total if I play well, I have 2/2.5 months to implement some kind of API server with some more or less true implementation.
Thanks to Swagger. Swag11 -
So much swag arrived in the mail today.
It's funny how I end up paying for more stuff from a free app than from one of those freemium games that are so popular right now.5 -
FYI Google sends you a free Google Home and a T-shirt if you have a good standing Google Assistant Action15
-
I recently filled out an e-form that asked you to fill out your birthday in the format of:
DD/MM/YY
but it didn't accept 22/09/1997
I was confused at first. I'm over 18 what's the issue?
Turns out it would only accept 22/9/1997
What sort of monster does that?11 -
I get more TshirtViews (pageviews lol) whenever I wear devRant tee 😎 Today people were like wtf this logo stands for 😂2
-
I don't find a hoodie or sweater in the devRant swag store. Since winter is almost here, is it possible to see some in the store soon? Cos man, I'll wear the crap out of it!6
-
Finally, my stressball. 💓
Thanks a bunch, @dfox and @trogus.
For making this bloody awesome app and the cool swag.
If I happen to meet you in real life, I'll take you both out for drinks. 🍻4 -
I accidentally broke our office’s tablet device. Operations manager said it will be deducted from my salary next month.
Few weeks later, my operations manager breaks his laptops touch screen. I almost did a naked run in excitement.9 -
HOLD THE FUCK ON!
Since when has devrant had a swag store?!
Never knew it existed untill like an hour ago, guess I'm loading up on dev ducks on pay day!5 -
Have you ever realised that @dfox and @trogus have most of our addresses because of the swag store?
They know where we all live! They could just come to our houses any time they wanted!
I'm sorry, I just sent them mine so I just realised that 😂10 -
How many times have you sat down at someone's desk who's asked for your help on something they've been unable to solve only to get them to read over the prompts and the problem is fixed in 2 minutes?10
-
Awhhh yeahhh!
Thanks @dfox and @trogus, y’all are cool kids!
These are gonna go all over the place!
Also, pretty sure my ducky is in the post office, being delivered Monday 😄
Y’all are awesome!6 -
Custom devRant swag! 😃
(I bought some genuine swag as well, I'm not just doing it to get cheaper swag...)3 -
Best swag ever: 3d printed dev rant avatar? I would love to have my mini-self on my desk! Or for playing board games! For rubberducking! In the fishtank! Oh man, inifinite posibilities ... *_* what would you guys do with one????18
-
I had just started as an SDE intern, and was fiddling around with the code base.
Me: Hey, can you send me the link to our version control system?
Mentor: Umm, what!?
Me: You know, where we keep our code backup...
Mentor: Hmm, is there a need for that?
Me: Yeah, I mean, my past experience tells me to always backup code, just in case something goes wrong.
Mentor: Ohh, that's easy. I'll teach you how I do it.
So, he comes to my workplace, and does this:
1. Go to your workspace folder.
2. Right click it.
3. Zip it.
4. Open outlook.
5. Compose email.
6. Attach the zip file.
7. Mail to yourself.
8. That's how it's done!
I was like what the hell!?!?! Is this really happening?? And then he started basking in his glory, as if he had taught me some secret hack! Seeing this, I couldn't even get myself to introduce him to git. That was the worst part.8 -
I can assure you there's nothing agile about an all day meeting that definitely doesn't require every dev to be there. Industry is weird.3
-
Top: Mine, Bottom: My boyfriend's
We thought it's about time to post a pic of our devRant swag and current laptop sticker collection!2 -
dfox, trogus - you guys are so incredibly nice!
thank you so much!
(ordered stickers from the shop hoping some of the money goes to the guys and they put an extra free swag without me asking for it)1 -
Boy do I love when Snapchat sends me a snap telling me happy father's day.
I don't even know who my father is but thanks for the reminder assholes.
I wonder what dipshit thought that sending everyone on Snapchat messages during all sorts of holidays that not everyone celebrates was a good idea.9 -
9:00 AM: devRant stickers arrived.
12:00 AM: devRant stickers lost.
15:00 AM: going to Swag Store to buy new stickers and a stress ball.10 -
Just got started on my first summer project.
Drinkaloo: The Ultimate Drinking Game.
Never touched android studio before. This should be fun.7 -
!rant Finally arrived.
And just in time for my birthday tomorrow. Thanks dfox and trogus for this amazing community. And for the swag! 🎉😀6 -

My fucking awesome ass JS #SwagDuckie arrived!
Awesomeeeeeeeee!
Also, stickers arrived the other day. I ended up mounting them on Black because the Apple logo shining through annoyed me 😊
Now I need a vinyl design that looks like a duckie for the back of the laptop.
Thanks @dfox, @trogus; international shipping to the uk was remarkably fast, I was shocked.13 -
I used to think I was so clever by viewing the source code of websites, and would just scroll through it for fun, but what really got me started in programming was the TI-83 calculator I got in grade 10.
You couldn't view the code of most programs on that calc without a computer connection, but I managed to get my hands on the source code of something simple and learned how to prompt for values and calculate things with them. Before I knew it, I was making little programs in BASIC that did formulas for me (Area/circumference of a circle, etc.). One of my professors caught me showing my calculator to another student in class, and assumed I was being a bad student. When I said I made a program as a shortcut for one of the formulas we were learning, she tried to call my bluff and said to write the whole program on the whiteboard for the class to see. 10 minutes of writing and more than one blank stare from my classmates later, the teacher just waved me off and continued the lesson. I was chuffed :-). I made these simple programs for all my math classes throughout high school.
Unfortunately, my first year of university I took a CS course, and my teacher was probably the worst I've ever had in my life. I decided it wasn't for me, and though I did maintain my general aptitude for tech (and was still the person who fixed everyone's printers and viruses), I took a different path, eventually getting an Arts degree in Anthropology.
Where I live, the market for this is more than stale. In fact, it's completely flat, so I thought I would take a course about programming with Arduinos for fun and see if I should return to school for a different certification. It was AWESOME! I made a wireless weather station with Xbees and sensors and built my own anemometer.
I got a job at a manufacturing company, and had the fortune to build a robot which eventually made it's way to the second season of Battlebots. The level of intelligence and enthusiasm I encountered really inspired me, and now here I am at 31, halfway through a BSc in Computer Science and working for a company that makes 3D printers.
It's been a long journey, but the adventure always starts anew tomorrow.5 -
Got my new @gatsbyjs socks! Super comfy! Thanks!
Free swag for contributors. Contribute now! #buildwithgatsby12 -
I'm proud to be part of this community ;)
Thanks for the swag stickers.
My laptop is waaaaay cooler now!
@dfox @trogus1 -
The feeling when you realise the 4 letter username on devRant you wanted hasn't actually been taken.8
-
So many stickers so little space..
But there is always place for devRant :D
Thanks @dfox and @trogus7 -
First ever devRant Swag Store order and my stress ball from 150++ on a post! I can't wait to wear the shirt to work tomorrow!4
-
I got stickers!!! B)
P.S. Only a week for NYC to Veliko Gradište, Serbia?! I'm pleasantly surprised!6 -
How am I supposed to deal with unwanted swag? I attended a VR dev meetup (turned out to be pure corporate advertising) and someone placed unsolicited swag at my desk. After the corporate spiel I privately asked one of the coordinators where to return this because I don't want to put it to waste. He called me rude and walked away.3
-
!rant
Woot, that moment your free hosting company sends ya some swag. Netlify, stay awesome.
... Hey there Heroku, how you doin'?4 -
Sure go ahead throw me off a bridge into a task thats completely out of my ability in an area I have no experience or understanding almost completely unrelated to the role in which I applied for.2
-
Just did an internship test for Autodesk and came away from it with the conclusion that I'm really stupid.
May as well give up on my dreams.4 -
Worst career choice: Not programming when I was younger because someone told me I would pick up bad habits. As a result if feel behind some of my peers at University.
Best career choice: I'll let you know when/if I have a career.4 -
Glad to support this awesome community! Thanks @dfox & @trogus for the quality shipment!
I'll look like a DevRant salesman with this Tee and the stickers on my Macbook :D Goto sleep, wake up covered in bitches with all this swag :D5 -
Recently I won a Qwiklabs speedrun with global rank 1.They gave me a $25 starbucks Egift card ! Nice right!?
NO.
Supposedly this can be only be redeemed in US.
Its always super irritating when you win some swag or voucher but always end up not able to get it due to residence in a Different Country.
P.S They are trying to resolve it. Its been forever since.4 -
Every tech-related company sell more and more swag : tshirt, hoodies, GitLab even sell socks and Docker baby stuff.
Do any of them sell underwear ?!6 -
Just started using GitHub for my Uni assignment. Summer is coming up and I hope to get a lot more green on here with some projects.2
-
I aspire to become the type of dev that understands frameworks and has technical depth rather than the type that just implements things but it's a struggle. I don't know where the foundations are.7
-
Maybe I should’ve gotten a smaller 1.
Anyway maybe just using it hood-up half-zipped.
Thanks to @idontgiveaduck for showing me da swag shop12 -
this.rant.isFirstPost == true
Found this gem while sorting the endless pile of hackathon swag: two tattoos and a sticker.7 -
Forgot all about the swag store. I'm already a ++supporter but I've never ordered anything of the store. So today I've ordered a PHP duck, a separate linux cape and a stress ball (already got the free stickers).
Can't wait for them to arrive! -
Damn, there's so many different Hacktoberfest t-shirts available this year. Time to sit down and go "clothes shopping" I guess!
https://devswag.io/2 -
Today I Fucked Up. I tried to do something involving hardware.
I tried to fix my mechanical keyboard by myself with no thought towards how electronics work. My first time using a soldering iron and trying to fix something myself.
I went from needing to replace one key to burning some plastic, failing to get new solder onto the parts to attach the new key to the PCB and getting solder where I didn't want it to needing a new keyboard because I think I've fried some stuff so badly half the bottom row of keys no longer works.
Fucking wonderful.
Guess it's time to buy a new keyboard.
Sigh.5 -
Was watching a video tutorial narrated by a south asian guy(am not racist). Middle of the tutorial, he burped. I rewind the video to confirm if he actually did that. Mofo literally burped.
Now i feel stupid that I rewind to hear that.11 -
Started my internship Monday. Got given a new top spec MacBook Pro. Yay. Except it has the German Keyboard layout. () require shift and yet {} and [] require alt. Whoever designed the layout clearly doesn't program.
Oh and the imposter syndrome is coming on strong.9 -
Something isn't working, I play around with the code, and try all possible things in the code. Still it doesn't work. Spend a couple of hours reading each and every line but still in vain. Finally, I find out that I was editing the wrong file (same file at another location) the whole time!! This happened a couple of times when I was a newbie, one of my most annoying mistakes.
Lesson learnt: Now when anybody asks me to debug his code, I first edit/add a print statement to make sure this is the correct file. I thought I was being skeptical, but it has saved me a lot of time (mostly interns do this rookie mistake).2 -
Currents is back! Take DigitalOcean's survey on Open Source and get free Sammy stickers: http://do.co/currents-survey2

Finally.
Coming home from my parent's after an extended Christmas vacation, this is a great gift to find on my doorstep (figuratively) -
I Have got a lot of swags going to events and meetups! Shirts Pins IDs Stickers ! what is your most Treasured swag of all time??
BONUS IMAGE down3 -
Did some changes and raised a code review. Some lines' indentation don't align. The senior dev (reviewer) asks me to format according to the project scheme.
Changed all tabs to spaces; lines don't align.
Changed all spaces to tabs (with a heavy heart); surprisingly it still doesn't align!!
I'm like okay, let's dive deeper.. Found that the surrounding lines were indented this way: 4 spaces followed by a tab..!! SERIOUSLY!?! WHY? HOW? I mean how does this kind of shit happen?!
Worst part -> getting ship it after following the current convention! -
!rant
They've arrived! Now I just have to decide which and where.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus, keep the swag on!
Happy coding everyone!1 -
I turn 21 in a month, and I still have no idea what I want to pursue as a career after university or how to get there.
Sure its two years away but I feel behind already.
Also how does one go about getting an internship in the UK?
I've yet to speak to anyone from any dev industry and it's beginning to concern me.6 -
Time check 12:21AM in Philippines. Someone is knocking on our house. Suprisingly received a swag from #devrant. Thank you guys!3
-
Swag idea: Rubber ducks with the DevRant face on them instead of a ducks face. No beak. Just a freaky slash where the beak should be. 👍🏻
The whole duck can even be the speech bubble orange!
I don't know about anyone else but I'd buy the shit out of this!4 -
Representing. T-shirt's quality is all I hoped for and oh man the stress ball...let's just say staying away from cigarettes for good while debugging just got a whole lot easier :)
Thanks for providing awesome swag @dfox && @trogus!3 -
It's kinda calming to find out that the atlassian-guys themselves don't know very good about their stuff either3
-
Goals for 2019
- Land an internship at either of the companies I'm in the final stages of interview for.
- Nail my exams.
- Publish an application to the app store.
- Buy an RTX 2080ti.
- Start a blog.
(Dev-ish goals I guess) -
Just received the swag for MLH Local hack day. This is gonna be our first ever hackathon as a community. Awesome things are about to happen!
-
I recently purchased a new laptop, so I needed some stickers for it.
Luckily I was still able to request some free devrant stickers. (:
My devRant swag and some other stickers I ordered all arrived in the past week.
Pic related7 -
After a long time waiting for it, I finally got my swag ! Just in time for the Friday's devrant meeting !4
-
My Cat-magnets make me smile every time I look at them!
OfferZen gives the best swag for developers in South Africa!1 -
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for the stickers! Letter got a little wet, but swag is in good shape. I'll definitely use them when I'll buy a new laptop 😀
-
Kind of a rant towards devRant.
Thought I'd buy a t-shirt to support devRant, but a fat fuck like me is too big for 2XL shirts. Should I buy two and stitch them together maybe?
@dofx7 -
Here's an idea:
What if we bundled swag store orders to a particular country so the cost of shipping everything gets spread across?
Although I don't live in a central area of the UK, I'd volunteer to receive multiple orders and then further post them to their final destinations. Posting locally is definitely cheaper, so if the math is done right, everybody wins.
:)15 -

When after one month of the event, a month n a half of the request, and a failed delivery attempt, the swag finally arrives!!

Happy scenes!

I just got some free swag :D
I put it on the HP logo, didn't think about it sinking into it, it looked shit before I started to press it on there
It turned out quite well though, now I like the HP looking through
But now I can see how misaligned I was...
it's going to annoy me :/undefined fuck hp whoeverfuckingreadsthisisalegend stickers! misalignment toomanytags stickers arrived stickers devrant stickers free swag awesome4 -
Finally decided to do some planning before writing code but now I feel like I'm just procrastinating around writing the code.
The struggle is real.2 -
The Office at about 7am when no one else has come in yet because it's peaceful.
Definitely my most productive hours so far. -
Internships just kinda suck.
Like sure I'm probably not as good as the other Devs but knowing I'm getting over 5x less pay than anyone else in the room hurts.
Salaried and it works out at less than minimum wage if you convert it to hourly. Honestly what the fuck.
The experience im getting has been good but having to continue being on a student loan while working 38.5 hours a week is outrageous. Living in an already expensive city and I'm probably spending 10% of my pay on lunch in the office's canteen.10 -
If someone here reads on Medium a lot, this might be useful for you: https://producthunt.com/posts/...
This is my second browser extension and it's open-source. It lets you read all Medium stories for free. Hugs and / or bugs welcome! 😇8 -
Well, few days ago I got mine free swag. The stickers look AWESOME!
I really do like them, but since we have holidays, I'll put them on my notebooks in the next school's year.
Greetings from Gdańśk, Poland. Have a great holidays y'all reading this right now!4 -
I remember few years back when I had subscribed to this ISP, where few months on subscription worked flawlessly. Then it was all downwards from there. Customer care never answered. Charged for bloddy whole month whilst the working was just for 2 weeks. People subscribing to this ISP had a facebook group named ISP Victim. Was forced to change my ISP.
Now, few days back they put up a stall in an IT exhibition. I went up and signed in for their service. Now they call me for setting up their network, either i tell them am not available or dont answer at all. I do the same to them what they did to me. That utmost pleasure HAHA. I shared this idea in the facebook group and people are starting to do the same.
I feel like a con artist now. -
We use MDD!! I coined this term one night after getting frustrated and having a lot of drinks. What's that, you ask?
MAGIC DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
It's when you're working on a not-so-recent code base and are afraid to make any changes in fear of breaking things up. You've touched some modules, and now you restrict yourself to work only on those treating all others as a blackbox. Even if something can be achieved by a small change in one of the blackboxes, you still go for multiple changes in the modules you're familiar with! Such is the horror. You start saying that those modules work by some dark magic that nobody understands! -
When you spend all day searching for a bug that prevents you from proceeding but it was your fault all along...1
-
Have anyone in Norway/Scandinavia ordered a devduck/apparel from the swag store and can tell me how long it did take? Want to order one, but not until at the start of next year.
-
Finally got my stickers! Thanks devRant! Ready to start filling my laptop up with things only developers understand!7
-
Anyone here from Germany who ordered from the devRant Swag Store?
I've ordered some devDucks and I'm wondering how customs will be handled, considering that the amount I paid is above the 22€ which would pass customs just fine.
That being said, I can't wait to bring them to work and surprise my coworker. We're just 2 devs in the company, so I ordered 2 ducks and a cape to swap them. This way, we always got a duck that knows what we're talking about. :-)1 -
I moved house yesterday and now it's been around 27 hours since I last used my computer.
All I want to do is create but my setup is in boxes in another room and it's 5am.
Why must motivation strike at the worst times?2 -
Just got a new work laptop which is absolutely awesome. Only bad thing is that i can't transfer the sticker swag :/4
-
I just published my second chrome extension: mediumship! It lets you read any story on Medium. Feel free to try it out at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...

Yet another probably final Hacktoberfest swag
From Umbraco
Received by improving documentation
Thanks to Umbraco for sending stickers which were missing in my pack ^v^ -
When I forget how to do something simple and I have to look at past projects or look online.
Makes me feel disappointed in myself.1 -
When you use ls to look at a directory other than your cwd, decide you don't need that folder and rm -rf * in your cwd.
tl;dr: Alias rm to mv before you regret it. -
How I got my first Free Swag?
I stole it?
Obviously no,
So it dates back to year 2016. After learning about open source project and working with few organisations, I noticed few contributors and developers with t shirts having logo of the company or organisation.
I mean if you see a guy wearing google tagged t shirt don't think he works in Google, he might have purchased it.
Next, I started searching for ways to obtain one. I reached and texted developers and all they told me were two golden rules.
1. If you develop something or update something, showcast it.
2. Always show the organisation what you do for them, even if it small contribution.
After this I started mailing and texting the contact mail id of companies and organisation I worked and contributed. Some texted me- no we don't have free items, some said we can't ship to India.
But out of 100 replies with 85 negatives, I recieved 15 positive replies. I was amazed to know that I'll recieve one.
You know what I was showered with
Stickers
T shirts
Laptop skins
Keychains
And many more.....
This Rant is for you to motivate and showcast what you do.2 -
Just spent an hour salvaging some code from an app project I abandoned so I can reuse it in the future and add what I salvaged to a portfolio of small things I've made.
It was a simple multiple player name menu that generated player objects once the user was done entering names.
Loads of potential future uses.
No point letting it sit inside an abandoned project even if it is somewhat trivial to reproduce. -
For folks who are participating in #Hacktoberfest this year, here's a good resource to keep tabs on everything that's on the table: https://producthunt.com/posts/...1
-
I was going to buy a duck but then I realised that the shipping cost was 1.5x the cost of the duck itself :(1
-
Haven't finished it yet but just doing it has helped me land an internship in the field I want to work in.
-
Wish devRant can show the timeline of where the Swag stickers have reached in the delivery Pipeline. Eagerly waiting for my Swag Stickers to arrive.
-
Are there any good sites/outlets besides redbubble where you can purchase decent to high quality developer themed swag?3
-
read and get a basic understanding ->
create using simpleton syntax until confident ->
read a bit more ->
refactor with a more advanced approach
-> repeat until GODMODE
-> sad panda if the next version is completely different (Angular 2.0)
-> flex your muscles
-> buy some swag
-> happy panda
-> retire. -
Both Devrant swag and unixstickers arrived today.🎆🎉
*After wating 2 and half months but really worth it.*1 -
Always fun when the thing you've been working on is definitely going to the dark corner of the projects that never get looked at again. Oh well, it was giving me a headache anyway. Can I do something useful now?1
-
From the people here who already got free swag and live outside the US, how did you formatted your address and how long did it took you to get a response?1
-
A guy asked for retweet so that he can get free chicken nuggets for a year. Can I ask upvotes so that I can get free swag ???2
-
So I'm wondering if anyone here have claimed the free swag from Codeship? If I'm understanding things correctly you can get 10(?) T-shirts for free? Can anyone confirm or deny this? Sounds too great to be true ^^12
-
DevRant should send out different swag you achieve with points then the one you can buy. Your achievement of a 500++ literally cost $6.4
-
You know that your are working with a DB-Guy when he provides you a "REST" interface that is outputting table data in JSON format and not even the JSON syntax is correct.
