I was an oilfield machinist for about 10 years. During downtime I'd read blogs and books on my phone. Eventually I wrote an app to manage parts drawings and CNC programs for my shop. Any time I came across a package or pattern I didn't understand I'd pursue it relentlessly. CodeWars and reading other people's code got me a long way. Now I've got a job in silicon valley and things are pretty sweet.

I just finished a 5 kyu quiz on codewars, grabbed my mouse to click the "submit final" button and accidentaly hit the button on the side which jumps to the previous page. I lost everything and have to rewrite it now.

Why the FUCK are my project ideas so easy to implement. I wanted to make a static site sharing webpage (imagine github pages), and i fucking made it in 2 hours?????? Fuck me, does anyone know something like codewars or something but with project ideas instead of algorithms?

Does anybody know of other contests like google code-in, summer of code and hacktoberfest? Not things like codewars. Any type pf contests with large tasks that are challenging. Thanks!

so i have to practice on codewars for homework and my code.. doesnt work! what a surprise. i was wondering if anyone could tell me whats wrong since yall are professionals. its probably a stupid mistake. this is the challenge: Implement a method that excepts three integer values a, b, c. The message return true if a triangle can be built with the sides of given length and false in any other case.

That moment when you're very happy you just completed a hard Haskell kata in CodeWars, with 8 lines, three functions, a lot of functional concepts (which would take at least 30 lines in Java or C#) and they show you the top voted solution by another user with JUST TWO LINES and a lot of function composition.

So our company wants us to start learning/sharpening our Python skills for work. We signed up for CodeWars and ran through our first Kata today. I'm excited to learn, but I don't have any actual experience with anything but HTML/CSS and super basic JS for just things like animation... I feel like such a fucking moron trying to work through this Kata. Because our manager wanted us to only spend like 15-20 minutes on it. I spent over 4 hours trying to figure out the right place to even start, even with reading documentation and trying to find similar examples online and after 4 headsmashingly long hours I couldn't even get an idea of how to tackle the problem.

Watching python videos to try and figure this out...

How many of you guys use codewars fo stay on top of your skills?

One thing that is really difficult is when you are writing let's say C code for months, and then you switch to C# or Python, you immediately use C-style logic and forgo the easier, shorter Python syntax!

I did a python kata on the Codewars website. After submitting it, I realized my solution was like 10x longer than every other solution. Talking about hand in face.

Stuck to basics and forgot about Python's amazing shortcuts. What are you going to do!

Has anyone here heard of codewars? It's a website I've been using it for the past few years to train myself for programming competitions. I highly recommend taking on the challenge of one problem per day.

I recently came across codingame and codewars. I haven't had much time to explore yet, but they look like they'd be helpful with learning by doing. I'm not so great in a classroom type setting. I enjoy jumping in and hands on. But I also have a hard time thinking up my own (useful) projects to use or create for practicing and I'm nowhere near good enough to contribute to something that's open. Anyone use these or have similar favorites? I'm not necessarily a beginner in my languages of choice, but I am rather rusty.

Confession:
I've been working as C# programmer for an entire year, and I wrote desktop app as well as win services, but when it comes to practice (cause I moved to PHP about 7 months ago) on Codewars I go completely wrong, and it's even worst on Hackerrank.
Have to admit, feel so dumb and lost

college, codewars, stack overflow. college has so far only taught me the concepts, though

1. Makes account on CodeWars to see what the fuss is about, have a bit of fun on a quiet weekend etc.
2. Does a few 7kyu challenges, feels neat.
3. 4hrs later is 10 commits into a 1kyu level challenge called PuzzleFighter.

WHY DO I DO THIS

I know a lot of people know about this already, but I'll put it here anyways. So, I've know for a long time that I don't need to know more about a language, I just need experience (As a learning dev). So, I was just being an idiot looking for projects to make. Then, I found codewars and I am hooked. Can't wait to see what I can eventually do with it.

Anyone familiar with codewars or codingame? Know of an iOS app for similar? I like to work through short exercises when I have a few minutes to burn and the sites aren't exactly pretty on mobile.

I graduated a boot camp in July and can't find a job to save my life. My skills are dwindling and I have tried to use codewars and got frustrated. I went back to the basics with free code camp. I question my sanity now. I just want to build things but I have forgotten so much. Pity party over. Time to go build something.

I wanted to design an operating system when I was younger after giving up on the idea of being a video game designer. While researching that I learned I need to know how to program. I tried too learn solo with websites like Codecademy. I completed several tracks on the site. After getting the basics down, I took two Java programming classes. After that opportunities to write code for free kept popping up and I kept saying "yes". Fast forward a few years and I'm working as a programmer. I'm by no means good at this but I'm learning and I love my job.

I also kept trying to solve coding challenges on websites like codewars over the years.

Would anyone know of a hackerrank type of api, where users can hold language agnostic challenges? I want to add that to my project but they stopped their api.

Anybody know of any other apis?
CodeEarth & CodeWars don't provide what I need.

I normally would create what I need and don't find but I assume that making something as sophisticated would be very very time consuming

Codewars needs to enforce that people upload avatars. I've created all these hateful feelings for this black and white ninja-raver image... Is it that one asshole again? No. It's just everyone - and I can't tell who the jerks are anymore. it's silly. Just leave it blank or something. Anything else. AAHHHHHH!!!!

There's no one correct way to get better. As with any skill, practice is one of the best ways to hone those skills. Various methods for that. Researching best practices, repetition, personal projects, professional development classes, online resources like codewars, codecademy, learn _ the hard way, etc
