Search - "rip ram"
"You can't run Slack, Premiere, After Effects AND Photoshop at the same time with only 8 GB RAM!"
I know it is 1 week too late but i dont care. Im aware that my workbench looks like shit but in reality it is a "creative mess"
@Condor Do you envy me now? I have 1054z that is hacked and has all its features unlocked! I have desoldering station and crappy (very crappy) soldering station. In addition to that i got simple sine/square generator that goes to 1Mhz (old communist poland tech - indestructible and great)
Situation with my pc is complicated. My main pc (with the curved monitor)
-12 Gb or ram (2*4Gb and another 4 that friend gave me)
-radeon 7800hd (*RIP* cant play games anymore 😥)
-256Gb sata SSD
-2Tb WD blue HDD
In addition to that i have a laptop
i5 4 cores, 8Gb ram, 1Tb HDD, GTX1050
I use my lap for gaming now, i even connected that monitor as main lap.
(double monitors yay!) sometimes i use my old pc for minor things but i use rdp for that, it is great experience! (my lap displaying rdp from my old pc on second monitor that was my old pcs main one 😂 i find it a tiny bit funny)15
Who knew running OCR on a 70 page scanned document would take 42 minutes and eat nearly all your RAM? RIP server 🤣🤣🤣1
Slack has to be joking. I just wanted to use it in my browser, because their beautiful and definitely not electron based app takes 600MB RAM. Fuck you Slack!3
Question: What was the worst mistake you made in Linux?
So... Because I've finally upgraded my PC (rip money on bank account) I can now run a VM with Linux all the time that isn't slow as a snail.
I installed Linux mint, with 4Gb of Ram and 6 cores, and it runs like a brize, while I play on windows and stuff. BTW I'll be using the VM for programming stuff, since I'm finally at home (homesick because of burn out), when I'm better I'll finally have the patience and memory to learn new stuff and get my projects up and going.
And because I've never really used Linux I'm watching YouTube videos about Linux, and found a Perl I've watched before, #Linux Sucks
And It's great... I get so many laughs, but also, learn stuff I didn't know, like, how Linux Pros make mistakes that Windows users can't even do, like breaking the OS.
So... I would love to know, what was the worst mistakes you ever done on Linux? How did you brake you're system?
BTW this would also be great for noobs like me to not make them... I hope. Since I'll be moving full Linux when I'm comfortable.
BTW @dfox this would be a great wk ...18
the new hp stream has accessible screws
under those dumb rubber bands
can't upgrade the ram though
RIP my soul
Started learning Android development in Kotlin.
My first impressions:
- Kotlin is good, but class syntax is not very appealing
- Overall it seems to be quite easy, at least the basic stuff
- Android Studio is a fucking memory hog, RIP my RAM
- As good IntelliJ is as bad is Android Studio somehow
- Emulator seems to be really advanced which I like9
I really need to but a new laptop, my current 2012 MacBook Air with 4gb of ram can’t take the workload anymore. But it’s so hard to find a good alternative ! The new MacBook Pro sucks and it’s so fucking expensive (and I don’t want the silly touch bar). The competition isn’t much better, most laptops with the same quality doesn’t allow you to upgrade the ram and are about the same price range than the MacBook. Really , I miss the days we had good, affordable, upgradable choices (RIP MacBook Pro 2012).17
Bullshittery continues. This time around, absolutely innocent, clamav is root cause. For once not incompetent idiot, but piece of software. IDK if that makes me happy or upset.
So our email server that I configured and took care of died. RIP. Damn, better put it back together ASAP. So Im under pressure, while still pissed at everything that I ranted before (actually my last 2 rants were throttled, and in total all of that happened past 60 minutes but devrant rate limiting) I start auditing logs. You imagine, we kindda need it NOW, and it's second time last month clamav is pulling stunts and MTA refuses (properly) to work without antivirus. So pressurized, I look at logs, what the fuck went wrong.
clamav deamonize() failed - cannot allocate memory
Hmm. Intresting, but sounds like bullshit. I know server is quite micro becouse they wanted to save on costs as much as possible, but it has well over half a gig free ram just before it crashes (like 800MB) with that message. Is it allocating almost gig in one call or what? Looked carefully at trusty htop while it was starting, and indeed, suddenly it just dies with quite a bit of ram free, almost as much as it weights already. And I remember booting it up when I was configuring it, and it had fair bit of headroom.
Google, help me friend... Okay, great, so apparently at some point clamav loads virus DB into ram (dafuq?), and than forks, which causes spike of 2x the ram usage, and than immidietely frees it up.
Great, that sounds like great design decision... At least I know, I can just slap on SWAP file, restart it and call it a day.
It worked, swap file is almost empty (used 15megs, 900 megs free ram, whatever).
That leaves me wandering, who figured out to load DB to ram? That means pretty much that clamav will eat a little bit more ram each vir db update, and that milisecond "double ram" spike will confuse innocent people who just wanted to run clamav and it worked last *long period of time* and now crashes without warning without any changes to configuration.
Maybe there is logical explanation, I want to know it.8
Alright, so i'm making an MS-DOS 6.22 box on a modern laptop: 80GB HDD (SATA 2), 2GB RAM (rip 9x, smallest stick I got,) AMD x64 CPU (they stuck a single-core 1GHz CPU in a laptop meant for Win8.0, with age it's slowed to around 600MHz effective, so it's more suited to being an XP box but I have no XP drivers...)
I'm not strapped for space at all (I could make 4 2GB partitions with no issue) but should I use DRVSPACE? I've never used DOS-era disc compression (and won't fucking touch DoubleSpace, for those that remember that and its issues) and i'm wanting to fuck with it some.
EDIT: fuck CSM, gotta use GRUB to load DOS...2
