!rant #meta: I registered just yesterday and woke up this morning with 44 notifications, which is great because this community is obviously refreshingly active, plus I really love getting notifications. Nevertheless, is it really necessary to create an individual notification for EVERY SINGLE +1?! Dear devRant devs, I love what you're doing. But please, PLEASE, merge/group these notifications into just a few. I don't want to go through every single one of these, it's just cluttering my notification list. I always just clear the list and then use the in-app bell symbol to navigate to whatever item I'm interested in. I can't be the only one.4

That moment when you realize that you are workaholic, make final push to your personal project, hide computer away, and gaze out of the window, realizing that you are nothing without computer.5

Never ask a woman about their age.
Never ask a man about their wage.
Never ask a dev about their bugs.7 -
This was a picture I found from about a couple years ago. My aunt got me the shirt for my birthday.
much frustration

Just spoke to my boss about the fact I got another job offer.
Possibly the roughest meeting I've ever done.15 -
So today I got fired.
Why?
The Ceo forgot they asked me to take care of some business while he was gone. They went on a trip to get thier butt inflated (quite litterally kim kardashian status) for two months.
Me, A general employee, not a captain, or a division manager.
Turns out I ran the company a lot more efficiently than they did, reducing our man power from 5 staff per task down to one per task.
Not only that increased client retention 78℅
Was let go for overstepping my company roles.
I think they we're just a bit jealous, or ego was too large.
Luckily, one of the division managers took me under one of their teams and is secretly keeping me on until I bust out of this joint.12 -
Stop f*cking calling me minority or part of a underrepresented group. Yeah I noticed I am one of the only women on a conference. I DONT CARE, I AM A PROGRAMMER NOT A SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE. Hire me for my work, not because you want you company to be more diverse.50

Just set a cron on a coworkers machine to play "What does the fox say" at max volume at 8 when he's the only one here.
May need to review the security footage in the morning.2 -
You know your idea was shit when you ask a freelance dev to make it for you, get denied and then see your idea being ranted about on devrant...7

A young guy I work with burst into tears today, I had no idea what happened so I tried to comfort him and ask what was up.
It appears his main client had gone nuts with him because they wanted him to make an internet toolbar (think Ask.com) and he politely informed them toolbars doesn't really exist anymore and it wouldn't work on things like modern browsers or mobile devices.
Being given a polite but honest opinion was obviously something the client wasn't used to and knowing the guy was a young and fairly inexperienced, they started throwing very personal insults and asking him exactly what he knows about things (a lot more than them).
So being the big, bold, handsome senior developer I am, I immediately phoned the client back and told them to either come speak to me face-to-face and apologise to him in person or we'd terminate there contract with immediate effect. They're coming down tomorrow...
So part my rant, part a rant on behalf of a young developer who did nothing wrong and was treated like shit, I think we've all been there.
We'll see how this goes! Who the hell wants a toolbar anyway?!401 -
Sat for hours programming in a great new feature. At the end I tested it... and nothing happened. It didn't even have any effect. It just continued as normal. Talk about deflating enthusiasm...2

Like many others my favourote shameless hack is a cronjob to restart our app server at 2am, thus preventing out of memory exceptions5
-
We make a small server product with a web based admin system, as we were going to have limited customers who will use this (usually just the engineers) and this was not on the www. We dropped all support for all browsers other then chrome/firefox. No more IE/safari bugs for us XD2
-
A coworkers shameless hack. Our services have a bug being investigated that cause the server eventually to fail.
The hack? Reset the connections of every user every 6 hours and restart the servers.
