Open space is not a perk.
If someone tells you they want remote, not bit of remote or any other indication,
Why would you ask how much remote is ok?
If someone tells you "i want open space" would you ask "how much open space? Like half office?" No, you wouldn't.
But for sure, what is not acceptable when someone tells you they want remote is answering "that's a shame" if you want to get a developer a job, work, if you want to get cash because of a developer then do that.
Junior front end guy made a backend code, he made even a test.
GET /model/ very nice simple case tested.
NO. MORE. TESTS.
Well, it's the same guy who complained reaaaaally surprised that he had to check http status code after a request.
Im kinda the bad guy because I get upset with that stuff instead of clapping his stupidness2
MySQL. Relations. Every relation has an id for the FK.
Except one table. Why??
"BECAUSE I LIKE TO SEE THE INFO INSTEAD OF 73"
he is boss. He takes decisions.3
Soooo MY BOSS has proved himself stupid and ignorant.
So he changed the db because he decided after 4months building everything around a db we changed aaaand OF COURSE NO ORM as I already told you.
So raw queries fine. What queries? Well, he decided we dont need delete.
We had a soft delete before where archived was true but the entity still in db.
Fine we dont need delete?!? Ok sure
Today, him:" guys is it ok if I add some stuff to db?"
Me:"Well, taking into account we dont have delete that data will be with a lot of garbage and irrelevant data"
Him:" yes we dont need delete, in the future we will need archived true"
Me:" that's what the old delete was doing"
HE DOESNT KNOW THE FUCKING APP.
He IS VP ENGINEER
COO AND PM THINKS HE KNOWS STUFF WHEN HE DOES NOOOOOOT
FUCK THAT COMPANY.
When your VP Engineer says we DONT NEED AN ORM.
Raw sql queries are just fine and he even can help with that!!
It's only monday.6
Frontend:" im going to chage some bits because I have been thinking....and when we get errors Im confused because we got code and message"
Me:"yes but that's fine. The http status code should tell you what happened"
Frontend:"oh, you want me to check status code??"
WHYYYYY THIS GUYYYYYY
He even tells u like he is right tone of voice
We just finished a small discussion or debate about why we should use uuid instead of other field or property like name.
Gets funnier when you know the guy who started the debate proposed uuids few weeks ago.
My vp engineer and junior frontend (that's the team) both said "having not strong feeling about one or the other"
While they were finishing that sentence I started this rant.1
First of all sorry for lack of ranting
But this people started to behave.
UNTIL YESTERDAY. You gonna love it.
Junior coding front end. HE NOT TOUCHING BACKEND THANK GOD.
He realises his suggestion made him to do some changes in the code. Apparently that is the end of the wolrd "a developer proposing a change and then the code must be changed??? No no" that's how his brain works. Check this.
He decides not to do two pages for creating models so he combined two models in one page. TWO MODELS IN ONE PAGE. Sooo modelB depends on ModelA. Fine. front end:" so backend has to change because im doing this in one page"
Me:" mmm no, you said treat them as separate entities besides they are on the same screen"
He:" ok, but then if I create all together the modelB is going to raise an error"
(Let me tell you he says this with expert voice, because he said "raise" and "error" so he got technical now)
*my boss said some white noise irrelevant to the conv but he is happy because he contributed and is involved*
Me:"the way data is sent has nothing to do with the way data is shown"
He:" whatever crap he can say trying to prove his point desperately "
Me: "yes, but the backend is not going to change every time a form/page changes the way to display data"
He"i dont think u understand "
Me:" i think i do"6
When the junior fe pushes directly to the brunch you are working on and crashes everything
And he doesnt answer in slack
Loooooove this place3
Seen in twitter
"What if developers dont work in an #OpenSpace office? What if the n of bugs start shrinking & apps get better? NOP b/c ur boss likes parties"
Couldnt agree more1
When you go to the hallway because your office is full of 5yo children, and you have complained about it and your boss told you "it's not that bad"
And YOU FOUND YOUR BOSS IN THE HALLWAY WORKING AS WELL.
i work with monkeys, proud to be moneys with a monkey lier ceo.
Guys, Im here again to tell you this, you will laugh.
*Stand up meeting*
FE: well we should think a way to test all (he says that because he doesnt test so my tests+ END-TO-END and he can get away with that)
...because IM TOO LAZY TO TEST MY STUFF.
VP ENGINEER: "is it because it's too good that has no bugs? HAHAHAHA (bro laugh type)
ME: O_0 (thinking u better fucking test SOAB) Well, we should have tests in front end, and end to end. THE PYRAMID GUYS?1
As I mentioned in previous rants
The company that I work for is very loud and noisy, making it really hard to code.
First day in new office, bigger space in the same building....PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE AND LOUDNESS
Sorry guys, I have complained too they dont care.3
Rant two of monday!!
We are in a new office. Bigger than the previous one. Fine.
We are away from sales team (check previous rants about sales team and their hero #boringman)
Cool. We still hear him and them but it's better.
Boring man stops by tech team table to ask how many lines of code we have done today or in the last <period of time>.
We have solved nothing.
Boring man is veeeeery bored.
Rant one of monday!!
Monday stand up meeting....
Reviewing jira tasks
Front end:" well, I dont think that is a priority but IM NOT TEST DRIVEN DEVELOPER SO...."
Jira task? Local env for testing in minikubes.
Ahhh the cool startup isssss sooooo cool he takes decisions about that, model the app or even estimates the deadlines of the product (the product not jira tickets)
Isnt it cool? Why not give that power to juniors? Why not tell them they dont need to learn and junior is just something they label to pay cheap for them?1
This has just happened
general channel to discuss sonos.
I have sales team less than 1m away.
this office is a fucking pub.
free beers, people telling jokes and
having non work conversations, free beer/wine.
The dream! unless you want to code.
if you want to code....ah NO WFH POLICY.
In this company waste time is a must.
So everyday at 4pm Stretching time.
Im waiting for my PM to answer me on slack
I think when the deadline comes and I aint finished I should strecht. In the meeting.
I cant with this company any longer.
Most of it is crap but this is too much
Retrospective meeting after 2weeks sprint.
Sprint board for the meeting, in the not good section1
Company with CULTURE
Company who doesnt allow tech team to WFH but editorial team is fine (or sales)
Sonos playing ALL DAY, and sales team talking all day, next to tech team desk
Dont u love open space offices?
Good documentation/tutorial/ about ruby,Grape, Roda
Mostly APIs, how to run them, debug them, test them, so on.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
I have seen some rants about google and inconsistency.
I have seent this today about google
A boss who is the most inefficient boss ever. No, yours is not, mine is, trust me.
In the middle of coding, never in the zone for obvious reasons. A workmate wants me to call him to discuss stuff as he is working from home, which I wish I were.
I keep coding and decide to call him later.
My boss interrupts me again to TELL ME IF I CAN CALL MY WORKMATE.
Working from home today.
I have been in this role for many months now. Not a single ticket with specs.
Question in my email inbox
"Estimates" for current ticket.
Without specs, well some time I guess.
Guys, my unfortunately daily rant of my pm
I was told to create a docker env for our team. Good. Document the process so everyone can know what to do. Good.
My PM follows what he wants to instead of step by step and changes whatever he wants to.
I am asked for help because he doesnt know. No prob.
Me: "Do this, do this and.."
PM: "that doesnt matter, trust me, I could change it and.."
Me: "...and it wont work"
PM: "I know suff too, check" *does his changes aaaaaand doesnt work*
* awkward staring*
That happened a while ago.
This week, he crashed his git repo because he was doing things in docker team (including him) decided not to.
Took me more enough time explaining him "you are not supposed to do that in the container" funny fact he wanted to prove that his way was right and even if he did my way it would crash.
Sooooo he did my way just to prove how wrong I was. Everything worked flawlessly. Rage-still-awkward staring.
Plus the "aww that's weird. I dont know how this happened"
I cant express how outraged this makes me feel.
Me to my PM months ago (when I started) "we should upgrade the versions of node and angular when I do the tests (because yes, no tests at all)
Boss:"why? No no"
Our version of node 0.10.40 has no support any longer. But hey, I'm leaving that role :-) good luck new guy if new guy comes....3
Boss not fan of tests at all.
"Hey I'm doing all of tests" - boss to me.
"Cool, are they automated? Or do you want me to implement'em?" - me to him
[long speech about why tests are irrelevant including "...once I tested, it is tested, we dont need to have automated tests."] *im teaching you because you dont know voice*
Please, help meeee5
