Search - "semaphore"
If you start your communique by saying anything in the vein of, "we have an immediate need for," I will not be replying to your email, linkedin ping, friend request on Instagram or semaphore frantically waved from the tallest hill in view. You are trying to sell something to me, I am not desperately longing to do something for you. If you don't work for me, you have no capacity to represent my interest.
Tldr; developers cede the power in the relationship to recruiters and other middlepersons at their own peril.9
I am not a native english speaker and the position I applied for required good spoken and written english:
Please use the english language to explain to a 5 years old the purpose of a semaphore.8
So I had this assignment for a subject at University about semaphores in C. The theme was "Friend's dinner out" and it had 3 entities and yadda yadda...
The innocent me made this montage of a chef (one of the entities) with a semaphore in his hand and put it in the first page of the report for that assignment.
Until this point, all ok, or so I thought...
The moment I show my report to my friends they burst out laughing and say I literally just created a meme and sent it to a "not so cool" teacher.
They find it hilarious.
Right now I'm nervously waiting for the assignment grades to be published.
Did I screw up my report and thus my assignment?5
ok so i though of clearing my basics regarding concurrency and async behavior in programming. my end goal was to somehow reach rxjava and kotlin coroutines since these are the 2 common frameworks used in professional android dev . AND DAMN! since last 2 days am exploring apis and how stuff works and i have million milesss to cover.
I mean , here is a list of all the ways by which java8 (current version is java 15) achieves concurrency :BlockingQueue,ArrayBlockingQueue,DelayQueue,LinkedBlockingQueue,PriorityBlockingQueue,SynchronousQueue,BlockingDeque,LinkedBlockingDeque,ConcurrentMap,ConcurrentNavigableMap,CountDownLatch, CyclicBarrier,Exchanger,Semaphore,ExecutorService,Callable,Future,ThreadPoolExecutor,ScheduledExecutorService,ForkJoinPool, Lock,ReadWriteLock,AtomicInteger,AtomicLong,AtomicReference,AtomicStampedReference,AtomicIntegerArray,AtomicLongArray,AtomicReferenceArray
I have always just used threads and executors. maybe once or twice a handler/ looper and never a thread pool. these all stuff are so fucking much!6
USPS (post) lied to me abt a package, several times
finally got it and did NOT need to sign for it like i was told - the fuker was next-door as i was leaving to get food. pull the e-brake, look in my mailbox as he takes off, oh there it frickin is.
come to find out samsung changed shit and you can't try to root their shit w/o waiting 7 days or something now (RMM: prenormal)
my fone started rebooting randomly and shit after an update...(also had a mms from my sister that was 'nothing' a week or few ago, donno if that was her or a virus of some kind) - oh kool it's updating again..."optimizing app 1 of 1" ffs
and now at work i have this "windows could not start <service> on local computer. error 101: the exclusive semaphore is owned by another process" - wtf is this shit?
i swear i have some kind of tech disrupt power...3
I hate this crap and wish people would stop doing it. It makes my brain bleed and doesn't prevent any difficult to find bugs.
if (TERMINAL_COUNT <= index_thing)
English doesn't work that way, and I don't know about you but this crap is just awkward as hell. Sweet Jesus I wish there was less cargo cult programming in the world. Just because you saw something in a blog that convinced you that reverse comparisons is best doesn't mean it actually is. Use a damn static analysis tool to catch accidental assignments in expressions, don't twist my brain to interpret your weird phrasing of comparison operators. Some of your code reviewers may be dyslexic and have enough problems as it is.
And now for the mini-rant that I'm actually here for: You know what makes for difficult to find bugs? (Hint: It sure as hell isn't an assignment in an expression) Releasing an RTEMS semaphore you've never obtained. You'd think that would cause some kind of panic or assert failure but nope. Instead it causes... misaligned address exceptions? In statically allocated global memory? WTF??1
Sometimes I wonder how long it will take for society to stop starting every. single. conference call with "Hello? Helloooo? ... Can you hear me? I can year you!". Like it's a semaphore tower, or a shortwave radio communication to the dark side of the fucking moon.
I mean... what the ever-loving fuck. This technology has been around for 20 years now, how is it still so god damn broken, inconsistent and unreliable that we actually still all do this?
I'm sure after 20 years even Antonio Meucci and Alexander Graham Bell were no longer starting every damn phone call that way. GOD DAMNIT!5
