I just feel that I have to get this of my chest, because this have really me and my family really negative.
It have destroyed my will to be happy, sort of.
Well, my father have some kind of control behaviour. My whole life he has been angry on stuff that does not really matter
and I have always been the one that get all the shit - because I am the oldest. I was never allowed (maybee 3-4 times between age 8-15) to have any friends
over or stay with friends over night or after school. Because they "where bad and I would become like them".
I am happy that I meet my wife 6 years ago and moved away from home when I was 20, I kinda fled the situation from home to start my own life.
My father has always hated when boy/men had long hair and alot of beard - but that is something I always wanted to have. So when I moved from home
I start to let everything grow.
Two years ago, things got really fucked up when I did not shave all my beard of and cut down my hair because my mom had birthday. I did it the week after
because my brother graduated from school and we where going to visit, we did not want a repeat the situation from a couple of weeks before. After that I got
another job as a Linux sysadmin and started to grow the hair and beard again.
Last monday, my dad called and said that I am not welcome to visit them anymore. I am a "bad example" for my sibling
and he also said "you brother and sister does not feel so good (my sister fainted a couple of days before, which I did not know) so I have no time to care about you and your family"
I was stunned, I really wish that this was a joke but it is'nt.
I have always been bashed because of the choices I make in my life and for my own family (wife, and two kids + one more kid any day now)
When I choose to work with something that I love, they said that I am stupid because they basically think "that the PC is full of SATAN".
When they realized that I make more money than my parents combined they went silent.
I just wanted to write this shit of my chest, it is really fucked up and I am starting to loose the ability to have feelings - if you know what I mean.
Thank you devrant, for being one of the fun things I do, when I read all the rage, fucked up stories, hate, and so on. I do not feel alone :)
PS: I promise you, that you guys/gals will be the first one to know when my new kiddo arrives20
This guy has a weird sense of system security if he thinks an SSH MOTD will keep unauthorised people away. Because you know, setting SSH permissions would be too sensible.16
The joys of being the sole developer and sysadmin of a service with hundreds of thousands of users.
Just spent a couple hours with my family. In that time half the infrastructure died and the service became unstable.
Best of all is that I seem to be the only one getting this so called "java.net.UnknownHostException: System error" exception.2
TL;DR: stepmom, who is slightly nervous and impulsive at times, refuses to accept help after she asks for it, because she knows better.
$sm = stepmom, who is currently finishing her second degree (don’t ask)
$f = father, a sysadmin
$me = yours truly
Enter stage, a living room, $me is eating lunch while $sm, a fairly tech-illiterate woman, is finishing up a PowerPoint presentation for a course of hers.
$sm: *slightly nervous tone, as always* “I’m collaborating with $friend and I need her to fix this! She is taking the file to Uni tomorrow and I can’t edit the file. What should I tell her to do?”
$me: “show me what you want to have fixed”
$sm: *points at monitor* “here, look, it’s inconsistent here! What do you call that?”
$me: “tell her to make the formatting consistent. It’s called formatting”
$sm: “No, I want her exactly to know what she has to do!”
$me: “but I’ve just told you. Look, the formatting is all over the place. Bold here, italic there, Times new Roman here, [some other font] there, font sizes are inconsistent. That’s a formatting problem.”
$sm: “No! I demand that you tell me how you call this for real! I don’t want her to get confused”
$me: “It says that right here, there’s a button called apply formatting, that’s what you call it.”
$sm: “I don’t understand! You’re telling me wrong things!”
$me: “aren’t you supposed to know our way around MS office? How do you write your papers and stuff?”
$sm: “you’re so incompetent! I will ask your father!”
*cue the same discussion with my father*
$sm: “I thought you were both good at this, I’m just gonna google it up! If we get a bad grade, it’s gonna be your fault!”
It seems like my bloodline is cursed and destined to be the family tech support, as I share this destiny with my father.
Edit: how did this end up with the “random” tag??5
You know what, let me jump in on the "I hate PHP" bandwagon.
A couple months ago I upgraded my mail servers unattended. Roundcube got fucked for a couple of months, and I figured.. fuck it, I can still use Dovecot for authenticating with desktop mail clients like K-9.
Recently I unfucked it, turns out that it was an issue with the sock file in php-fpm. That's also when I noticed that PHP apparently hardcodes in its current version in the bloody socket file. Because why the fuck wouldn't you? It makes upgrades so much fucking easier!!! Said no fucking sysadmin ever!!!
And today I upgraded one of my mail servers to Ubuntu Server 18.04, finally, after a lot of hesitation. Bad decision, because now PHP got fucked YET AGAIN.
Again an issue with socket files? I have no fucking idea. systemctl shows no failed services (because you know PHP, why would you fail your service with an error message instead of throwing a meaningless 502 Bad Gateway, right?!!) and looking at the config files, well the socket file got its new php-fpm 7.2 file (still got the fucking version number hardcoded in) and thus I changed that socket file location in /etc/php/7.0...
devRant may just have been my rubber duck.
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU STINKING FUCKING PILE OF SHIT CALLED FUCKING PHP KEEP THE FUCKING 7.0 DIRECTORY OUT THERE WHEN YOU'VE UPGRADED, WITHOUT EVEN HAVING THE FUCKING BALLS TO RENAME THE MOTHERFUCKING DIRECTORY TO 7.2, IF YOU'RE GOING TO HARDCODE IN YOUR VERSION NUMBERS ANYWAY?!!!!!
Bloody fucking pile of fucking junk!!!!18
So yesterday I watched a short documentary about the FUCKING WORST RIPOFF IN THE WORLD: "the church of" Scientology.
Don't get me started on why you shouldn't join a cult on a philosophical level, it's enough to know that it's a ripoff to never want to join.
Anyway, they have their bullshit mandatory "counseling" called "auditing" which costs 500$ each time.
Now whenever I hear the word "auditing" I think of that.
I imagined a system audit as the sysadmin taking the PCs/servers to Scientology for counselling.
So I went for a "special" interview to a company whose slogan is "experience certainty" (fresher, was hoping to get a role in cyber security/Linux sysadmin). Got shown what the "real" hiring process of an indian consultancy company is...
We were called because we cleared a rank of the coding competition which the company holds on a yearly basis, so its understood that we know how to code.
3 rounds; technical, managerial and HR...
Technical is where I knew that I was signing up for complete bullshit. The interviewer asks me to write and algo to generate a "number pyramid". Finished it in 7 minutes, 6-ish lines of (pseudo) code (which resembled python). As I explained the logic to the guy, he kept giving me this bewildered look, so I asked him what happened. He asks me about the simplest part of the logic, and proceeds to ask even dumber questions...
Ultimately I managed to get through his thick skull and answer some other nontechnical questions. He then asks if I have anything to ask him...
I ask him about what he does.
Him - " I am currently working on a project wherein the client is a big American bank as the technical lead "
Me (interest is cybersec) - "oh, then you must be knowing about the data protection and other security mechanisms (encryption, SSL, etc.)"
Him (bewildered look on face) - "no, I mostly handle the connectivity between the portal and data and the interface."
Me (disappointed) - "so, mostly DB, stuff?"
Him (smug and proud) - "yeup"
Gave him a link to my Github repo. Left the cabin. Proceeded to managerial interview (the stereotypical PM asshats)
Never did I think I'd be happy to not get a job offer...1
I don't think there was a defining moment of clarity that I said "I want to be a dev". I became interested in computers when I started learning BASIC from a set of programming books that came with our family's encyclopedia set. I moved on to "hacking" some .ini files in a DOS game called Tank Wars to make the text in the game into vulgar insults. My friends and I would tear our parents computers apart and re-assemble them much to their chagrin. After a failed attempt at a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Arts I decided to go back to school for CS. My CS degree was Windows centric but I really wanted to be a Linux SysAdmin so I started to learn on my own and switched to using Ubuntu as my primary system. Ever since then I have been a Linux HPC SysAdmin and haven't looked back!
so, a new day, a new ERP software to rant about:
this one features an email feature (heh) but with a catch.
only pop3, no imap, if you want ssl the software suggest that you use a 3rd party program, also every user has to be logged in by the admin cause they assume the sysadmin knows all passwords cause he has "password lists"
i called them to ask why their software is what it is, they answer "there was never a need to develop an IMAP functionality, SSL would be so much work and it never became a problem that the sysadmin didnt know all passwords"
in unrelated news, does anyone know a nice sub 100K ERP software with CRM, Material Management and Offer/Order Management that runs on a local server and offers german support for a company in the 50 to 500 worker bracket?
