Network-connected train displays, failing and displaying their IP address, on a train that has WiFi on board. That's just begging to be hacked.19

So, privacy aware dutchies of devRant.
I was waiting for a friend at Utrecht central Station and saw this sticker (image attached).
Basically, by walking in the building with your wifi and / or Bluetooth active, you're giving them consent to track you.
They use the tracking to see where passengers wait for their train and what the popular routes are.
I thought you should know.
(this is the site on the sticker: http://stations.nl/beleid/privacy/)24 -
Sat on the train to my girlfriend's house 1.5 hours away, and I'm letting a friendly stranger charge his phone from my laptop (THIS INTERCITY TURBOSTAR TRAIN HAS NO MOFO'ING SOCKETS BUT PAID WIFI) and now my computer is out I want to code.
Problem is, if I bring up vim or the terminal, I may as well bring up hackertyper and put on a ski mask, and quietly mutter 'I'm in'.
On the other side, maybe he's using his beaten up Samsung to sneakysneak into my laptop? Who knowwwssss.6 -
Sitting at Starbucks cause my train is delayed and it's the only place with freaking free wifi.
I found the stereotype hipster :D
A guy having Beats Headphones on with a MBP, iPhone X obviously next to his MBP, searching for Elon Musk Audiobooks and Courses for Smalltalk and Management on Audible 🤣6 -
There's an app in my phone that shows local train timings and stuff. One thing that fucks my mind up is, even if my WiFi is turned off, it can still detect where I'm at and if I'm at train station, it pops up a notification that this station has free/public WiFi and I can use it.
HOW THE FUCK YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT FREE WI-FI IF MY PHONE'S WI-FI IS TURNED OFF.5 -
You just realize the sheer amount of dependencies spring boot has, when maven tries to resolve them while sitting in a train with bad wifi1
-
In the Netherlands most trains have a wifi network called WiFi in the train, it's rather slow so I always use my hotspot
Guess who decided to name their hotspot 'Internet Cable in the train' 😛7 -
So, my wife's family has a "no shoes inside the house" rule, what is fine... until you realize that they mean "*no shoes inside the house*" - regardless if you are actually wearing the shoes or if those are in your luggage or something.
So you're supposed to leave all footwear on a shelf on this bench outside their door.
That proved to be tricky when my 10yo twin girls started freaking out that someone was going to steal their prized shoes if we left those outside the house during the night.
It would actually be a risk in our own neighborhood, infested with amazon-package kleptomaniacs, but here we are deep in the country.
Now, I've been to my in-laws place many times, and they absolutely cannot be reasoned with. I wish I could use their stubbornness to train a LLM into relentless compliance with company policy.
So, in order to spare my girls from some of my in-laws paranoia, I've spent some time before we came here rigging up a wifi cam to a facial detection service. (I know I've just exchanged their covid-style paranoia with my own surveillance-state-style paranoia. Those are the times we live in. But i can see the irony)
The server monitors the camera feed and stores the first few seconds before, during and after some face is detected.
I trained a facial rekognition model with our family's faces and had it notify me every time some unknown face appears on camera.
Finally, I've printed a "smile, you are on camera!" sign, taped it over the laces of my tracking boots, and hid the camera (and a powerbank) inside one of the boots.
My daughters were pacified with that solution, my wife laughed out loud with a devilish smile, and my in-laws completely ignored me when I tried to explain it all. Perfect.
The system has been up and running since before christmas. It notified us when some relatives arrived for celebrations and one package delivery - no shoe-related shenanigans. Until this morning.
My daughters have been playing with some neighbor kids, and a couple of those decided to fill their shoes with mud on this new-year morning, as a stupid childish prank.
I know because they kneeled in front of the camera earlier today.
Right when I was finishing up my stretches for the morning... less than 2m away from the door.
The wicked kids looked straight at the camera, and you can actually pinpoint the moment that they realize they have been caught. Then you can see when they hear me unlock the door...
I opened the door to find a bucket full of mud and no soul on sight.
I'm not posting the video, they are minors, after all. But my family is sure to laugh at it every year... and my in-laws will keep on bringing it up with the kids' grandparents forever :)12 -
I'm on a train which doesn't have any WiFi. And the connection to my cellular is damn near none. Thank God for devRant, which does not need that much to run!4

Another OneDrive rant? Nope, this one is more aimed at the wifi in the train. Dutch people assemble!3

Been developing a FAAS backend for a mobile app while going back and forth to work in the train, constantly loosing wifi and failing deployments, it's like waterboarding for geeks4

So, I had to took a 4 hours bus today. I woke up ealry and prepared everything. Left home with time because I didn't wanted to fuck anything up and lose the bus. I went then to the bus station and went to order the ticket, they told me the bus leaved in the other bus station of the city (that is in the other side of the city). I had like 20 mins left. I had to take a train to arrive at the other bus station 5 minutes before the bus leaved. There were 4 people buying tickets. The first one was quick. The second one was that person that is slow as fuck and drops the money, like those old people in tje supermarket. I nearly lost my nerves and asked to those two persons ib front of me like "my bus is leaving in 3 minutes, can I get the ticket first?". Then I bought the ticket and ran to the bus. It was closing the doors. Luckily I could get in. I don't think that I was never close to lose some transport like this.
The good thing is that it has charger and wifi :D
PD: the station is huge, like 50 different buses. I was really lucky to find it at the first try :D2 -
haha I just thought of the perfect training device.
so many guns can have hair triggers. why not create a wifi enabled composite replica of guns someone is training with and get them all excited and psyched out and add a tracker to the trigger that opens a simple circuit and reports 'weapon fire' and gun orientation to the computer to help with training and reinforcing the training of proper weapons handling during apprehension or holding of a person so you can take control without shooting them accidentally in war or law enforcement actions, you could add a system that plays a very alarming bad noise when someone in the scenario is accidentally shot or you accidentally shoot the person being apprehended :P you know like you hold a pair of scissors with the point away, train them to hold their finger somewhere when handling a certain way to prevent misfire.
yes i'm thinking about shooting certain people or holding pedo money bags hostage atm. -
Damn it. This WiFi service in the train sucks. Not only they do block so dangerous stuff like Ubuntu packages but it is not even fast / reliable enough to give me stable SSH. NOT EVEN VIA FREAKING MOSH! We are talking UDP and couple of kbytes. Thankfully they let me pay for it after using up my generous 15 free minutes. Suckers.

Missed the fucking bus to work because they changed up the times here without prior notice...
So no more having the "nice" train (with comfy clean seats, wifi and airco) but the "crap" train (old dirty seats, no wifi and no airco) AND a quarter of an hour wait...
I rly need a drivers license...
