If we ever colonize Mars or if we even go further I am already feeling sorry for the poor bloke that will have to work on DateTime library.9
Shit... I just got my phone stolen. Realized it 40 seconds post factum [left it at the shop counter and someone took it].
20 minutes later called the police [cuz I had to get home and use wife's phone].
5 min later poluce arrived
10 min later they got all they could from shop's security officer.
Police officer asks me to login my samsung acc on his phone. 2 minutes later we are on the way to the exact location my phone is at.
15 minutes later officer hands me my samsung 😁
got my phone back in less than an hour after theft.
maybe... Ummm... Maybe all this tracking thing is not that bad...?13
I found out recently that Facebook is embedding tracking data in the form of IPTC metadata in images that you upload. This way the images can be tracked even after you download them.
Because I'm an anarchist and just want to watch the world burn a little, I made a tiny server to replace the id hash that they embed with a random one, just to see if I can't fuck with their algorithm a little bit.
You can check out the project here https://github.com/watzon/fbmdob16
"Oh no, big tech companies are taking advantage of our information and tracking everything we do. We're too dependent! "
"Wow this sounds important. *Googles it *"
"Everyone needs to know, *shares on Facebook*"
My family didn't support me become a dev. In fact, they sent my brother to a programming course and me to play tennis (gender tracking at its finest). Luckily, both me and my brother didn't give up our true calling. Today, I'm a developer and he is a gym instructor/personal trainer.8
The company behind ads on dutch national news sites/tv stations is stopping with tracking ads.
The interesting reason behind that IMO is that they have this very simple 'banner' which asks in a very understandable way whether people want (or not) tracking shit/cookies placed/loaded on their browser.
Apparently 90% of all visitors go for the "No" option so they don't see the point in continuing to try it anymore.
Mom : there's a letter for you. It's from USA. Are you in trouble ?
Me : oooouh shit what have I done ?
Fiuuuuu..NSA still not tracking my buggy code 😂10
I don't use Google/Facebook for privacy reasons (and their sub-services etc). Haven't used them for ages but noticed that google still loads a lot of domains like analytics etc. This goes for facebook as well.
I now blocked a lot of google/facebook domains through my hosts file.
It's funny to see the amount of DNS requests to those fb/google connected domains nearly go to zero and also the fact that I literally can't load google/facebook anymore!132
Just made a laser sentry tower for my cats. Next up is adding some tracking so it can play with them by itself while I'm at work and after that I'm adding a Wi-Fi module and camera so that i can also play with them while I'm at work... I couldn't resist using a mouse to top it off 😂17
Conversation between some kind of executives on the table next to mine:
A: do you know this app that'll let you hack into any Wi-Fi? You just click here, copy that and paste it here... and I hacked the restaurant's Wi-Fi. **laughs**
B: oh, only X? Bought. Wait... what is this "allow app to access your location"?
A: yeah, click "allow". You should also install a VPN.
B: what? BPN?
A: no, no. VPN. When you use a VPN you have a secure internet connection. You're protected from tracking, hacking and virus.4
My uni implemented Bluetooth beacon based attendance monitoring.
Raspberry pi + cloned beacons = 100% attendance.
(Edit for clarity: app on smartphone, Bluetooth beacon in each room)28
Okay so my co-workers explains why they give me the title "GitHub Maid":
Basically most of the time the engineering didn't have the time to scroll through issues, and that includes me, so a lot of this stuff does not get triaged properly when reported. When I stumbled on the tracker, I knew I had to do something, so I sorted and sorted and managed the tickets by my own.
So being a "GitHub Maid" is not something to be embarrassed about after all, in fact, I think the dev team owed me a lot because the issue tracker is more organized, and the issues are getting triaged and assigned properly now compared before.
So if they call you like something similar, be proud of it because some developers wouldn't even bother to tidy up issue tracking.11
My coworker requested I add a bunch of tracking to our product.
I've previously tried explaining to him (and honestly the rest of the company) about privacy issues stemming from tracking, such as by their beloved Venmo. Venmo tracks absolutely fking everything you give it access to, from location data to your entire facebook, twitter, foursquare, etc. feeds, and sells ALL of it to third parties. It's scary. but! this guy simply does not understand, and/or does not care, and marches right on into all the surveillance, loudly singing the song of convenience to all who'll listen. (Nobody else in the company cared, either. :/)
Anyway, I'm conflicted.
I have to install some tracking, but I can probably come up with an excuse to cut most of it out and gimp their surveillance. It'll still be useful to us, but it'll limit the amount of data the tracking company can sell to third parties.
but they'll push this guy pretty hard on it, and he's as technically-inclined as a smudged glass of warm, stale beer. "Better for your conversion!" they'll say. "How much tracking do you want?" he'll reply. "@ashkin, why can't you do this right now? What else do you need to make this happen?" he'll firmly inquire. and so I'll be forced to make it happen...
So guys i really need your help. My girlfriend started getting phone calls at odd hours, so I got suspicious and started tracking her phone. Then I found out that she has been going to this guys house at wears hours, then once when I was tracking her my computer froze, so what could it be? How do I fix my computer14
I wonder how would devRant send the mail with my MAC address? The hard way by tracking down my system having having the MAC address and deliver it to me?? 😂😂
DevRant is being unaware that we all are devs here 😂13
I have a pi-hole setup in my network for ad and tracker blocking and am dual-booting my pc.
I recently noticed just how much data windows really is trying to gather from my machine.
So I took the pi-hole graph and you can VERY clearly see the os switch. All this useless traffic coming from windows. (This is with all the privacy relevant options inside the settings already turned off!)17
When I know a website runs Hotjar or some other screen recording/mouse tracking tools I draw at least one dick per visit.7
So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5
I was talking in class. Teacher saw me. She asked me to explain the topic she was going to explain. It was Network Security. I started explaining how we can prevent tracking of our online activities by using VPN and all.
Teacher (to class): Do you all know about VPN?
Whole Class: No.
Teacher (to me): They don't know about VPN. Now, how will you explain?
Me: I won't.
One of my fears is that the NSA will start tracking my every movement because I've search "explode" in Google one too many times... I always forget if the $delimiter comes first or the $string in PHP's function explode().7
3D modelling, UVs, texturing, animation, video editing, compositing, motion graphics, motion tracking, 2D animation, and a fucking powerful render engine? Check.
Great community? Check.
Powerful and easy scripting system? Check.
A well organized dev team? Check.
People who care about UI/UX? Check (look at Blender 2.8).
Does it compete with a major corporation that would go into sloth otherwise? Check. (If you thought M$ was shaftware wait till you see Autodesk)
There are other FOSS projects that I really like, but my vote definitely goes to Blender.8
What’s the point in a fucking package tracking system when it hardly updates anything?!
Ordered my phone last Wednesday and got an update saying that it was going to be picked up by dhl soon.
Nothing new until today: it’ll be delivered Wednesday.
So you literally go from the first to last status in two updates, what’s the fucking point?
HUGE FUCKING DILEMMA FOR ME.
I will probably get the chance of choosing a company phone soon (as in, next few days).
Option 1: Android - not allowed to root or anything crazy so I'll have a partly open system but with google tracking fully enabled at all times (most probably).
Option 2: iOS - Also not allowed to jailbreak or anything 'weird' but it's entirely closed source. Although no Google tracking shit.
I honestly have no clue what to choose.
A client asked me to work on a new website for them. They setup a WordPress site with a basic theme and asked for the following additions:
- Job application system
- Employee management
- Employee scheduling/holidays
- Online clock-in/out and pay calculation
- Training videos/modules for employees with progress tracking
And their budget... $75
I taught myself programming in 1999, spent two months writing simple ad tracking script in php
I still earn about 1500/ month from it.
Those were the good old days19
So my thesis is coming to its end. The new pipeline seems to be working. We get higher fps (~20) on bigger input images. In addition for control, camera capture and inference, we can now also stream the images from the drone's camera. So we made a video from the nano-drone's point of view. The weird thing on my forehead is the marker we use for the tracking system so we can compare the inference to the GT.
Manager: Hey Dev I need to do QA on this PR.
Dev: That PR is not finished yet
Manager: Well do QA now anyway, that way when it is finished it can be merged in right away since QA has already been done on it. It’s a project management technique called “fast-tracking” and it improves efficiency.
I'm such an idiot!
For a while now, my machine has been kinda sluggish.
Just installed VSCode and a little popup saying that git was tracking too many changes in my home directory. I must've ran `git init` at some point and it's spent fucking forever tracking changes of >3,000 files.
`rm -rf .git/`
Quick. As. Fuck.8
The NOS (Dutch national news agency/company) was criticized recently because the cookie/tracking consent thing was 'too much/inconvenient'.
Seriously, their consent thing exists out of three yes-no buttons (one for each subject and the subjects have a very short but understandable description) which you can click or tap (it works perfectly on mobile) within a fucking second.
It's the best fucking consent thing I've seen and now they're saying it's inconvenient.
Inconvenient my ass, other companies should take it as example! (https://nos.nl)14
Would the web be better off, if there was zero frontend scripting? There would be HTML5 video/audio, but zero client side JS.
Browsers would be MUCH more secure, and use way less memory and CPU resources.
What would we really be missing?
If you build less bloated pages, you would not really need ajax calls, page reloads would be cheap. Animated menus do not add anything functionally, and could be done using css as well. Complicated webapps... well maybe those should just be desktop/mobile apps.
Pages would contain less annoying elements, no tracking or crypto mining scripts, no mouse tracking, no exploitative spam alerts.
Why don't we just deprecate JS in the browser, completely?
I think it would be worth it.22
Made advanced tracking system, position, history, speed, allowed areas, warnings, notifications - the whole shabang.
Client is more impressed by form converting hours and minutes into decimals.
So much rant against the GDPR. In the meanwhile USA Today created a site just for the EU. No Tracking or Ads. A site which was normally 5mb big to load is now 500kb for the EU! Awesome! Thats what the internet could be!3
I'd say Linux but seen that around a lot so I'll go with another favourite:
It's basically an offline navigation app which works with downloading maps offline and then you can use navigation without Internet (gps though of course).
It's very easy to use, looks okay enough and no fucking tracking at all. I was in Switzerland recently without any service (my friends didn't have service either and their navigation relies on Internet) and this fucker saves us big time.
Not saying that there aren't any other offline navigation apps but this one is awesome imo.28
DuckDuckGo may be great for not tracking you, however it sometimes lacks the "smarts" of Google....6
I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6
Day 1 at internship:
Manager: Can you get this RFID tracking system working? We have the full source we just need it installed.
Me: Sure thing, shouldn't take too long if it's a working system.
Me: (opens VS project)
Code is a sprawling abyss devoid of any intelligible structure, commented with broken one-liners which serve only to annotate method names.
For the record the system was broken, took me several weeks to track down all the issues.4
When Google recruits, I guess they don't need to ask you anything, since they are already tracking your every move.14
One of the main reasons I completely left windows and osx for Linux is the fact that Linux is open source. In an era of mass surveillance, secret court orders ordering companies to build in backdoors into their products, companies building in tracking into their software and so on, I find it irresponsible to use closed source software.
Only my personal opinion though.8
This happened in my first internship I was working for a small company. They had a knack of redefining policies at short notices.
The had this shitty time tracking site which was hosted internally.
We were working on client location for 25/30 days so we didn't have access to the time tracking site. And there comes a memo that everybody has to fill the time tracking or their salary will not be credited.
So when we reach office we hear this "News". We thought they would consider people on client location. But then on salary day we don't get any and are called into VP's office for a verbal lashing. We literally had to fight for two weeks for the salary.
Worst Experience Ever2
> Open private browsing on Firefox on my Debian laptop
> Find ML Google course and decided to start learning in advance (AI and ML are topics for next semester)
**Phone notifications: YouTube suggests Machine Learning recipes #1 from Google**
> Not even logged in on laptop
> Not even chrome
> Not even history enabled
> Not fucking even windows
The lack of privacy is fucking infuriating!
> Added video to watched latter
I now hate myself for bitting22
Despite beeing one of the strangest ads I ever saw, this one is a beautiful and scary example of advertising tracking. Although I used a vpn and incognito mode I saw this ad on a page really not tech related at all.6
Bought a guitar online and I wanted to know how much it weighed, but it didn't say. Then I got the tracking info and got the information another way :)3
So, privacy aware dutchies of devRant.
I was waiting for a friend at Utrecht central Station and saw this sticker (image attached).
Basically, by walking in the building with your wifi and / or Bluetooth active, you're giving them consent to track you.
They use the tracking to see where passengers wait for their train and what the popular routes are.
I thought you should know.
(this is the site on the sticker: http://stations.nl/beleid/privacy/)24
"Ad targeters are pulling data from your browser’s password manager"
"It won't be easy to fix, but it's worth doing"
Just check for visibility or like other password managers handle it iirc: assign a unique identifier based on form content and fill that identifier only.
"Nearly every web browser now comes with a password manager tool, a lightweight version of the same service offered by plugins like LastPass and 1Password. But according to new research from Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy, those same managers are being exploited as a way to track users from site to site.
The researchers examined two different scripts — AdThink and OnAudience — both of are designed to get identifiable information out of browser-based password managers. The scripts work by injecting invisible login forms in the background of the webpage and scooping up whatever the browsers autofill into the available slots. That information can then be used as a persistent ID to track users from page to page, a potentially valuable tool in targeting advertising."
I can't believe people are willing to scan their faces, fingerprints, and retinas on their phones.
Such data is very sensitive as it can't be changed easily.
CCTV is now everywhere and everyone has his own scanner providing data for tracking people.
Am I too paranoid?6
Google cripples ad and tracking blockers: In January, Chromium will switch to Manifest V3 which removes an essential API in favour of an inferior one. As usually, Google is being deceitful and touts security concerns as pretext.
That hits all Chromium based browser, such as my beloved Vivaldi. The team argues with their own browser internal blocker, but that's far worse than uBlock Origin. One of Vivaldi's core promises was privacy, and that will go out of the window. The team simply doesn't react to people pointing that out. They're fucked, and they know it.
So what now? Well, going back to Firefox because that will include the crippled new API for extension compatibility, but also keep the powerful old one specifically so that ad and tracking blockers will keep working. Google has just handed Mozilla a major unique selling point, and miraculously, Mozilla didn't fuck it up.26
1. Keep your rythm: 7/8 hours of sleep each day and DON'T take your work home. Unless you have your own business ofcourse. Still: don't wear yourself out!
2. Put on music. Me personally like fast punk when i'm struggling with a deadline. Makes you want to go faster.
3. Close ALL communication like chats, mail etc. Hell i even thought of a sign "do not disturb"
4. Coffee. Lot's of coffee
5. Use a time tracking method like pomodoro5
"A Single Line of Computer Code Put Thousands of Innocent Turks in Jail"
I'll leave the title as it was, but people were hunted down just for having been once logged by a tracking pixel inside a messaging app.
Simply terrifying, I hold that off for a while, since it sounded like the usual fakes, but it seems its not, as more and more keep confirming it.
"The government eventually exonerated 11,480 of the wrongly accused, but some had already spent months in prison, and reportedly some even committed suicide."
"Elif finished dressing her youngest and watched police search her family's home before they took her into custody — for using a messaging app the government deems seditious.
She knew the arrest was coming. She'd already lost her job, because traces of the app known as Bylock were found on her phone"
"The regime relies on logs from the country's ISPs to identify users of Bylock, fingerprinting them on the basis of their communications with Bylock's servers. These communications can be triggered without using Bylock, though: Bylock's tracking pixel was used for analytics for pop-up ads and in at least eight apps."
In my office they forced us to use Darwin Box. We need to login and click on clock in once we come to office. Fucking irritated. Who the hell remembers to clock in.
I wrote a simple Python code to clock in and made it as launched jobs.
Automatic clock in. *No Worries* 😅
Here is github:: https://github.com/Gowtham95india/...5
No offence to anyone but I'm wondering why so many people go for Google chrome while chromium browser provides about the exact same browsing experience and speed etc but without Google's proprietary tracking shit. I know not everyone cares about their privacy but still wondering.13
Hello devs, me and a friend want to do a little experiment. We want to install some kinda tracking software on his android phone to monitor everything he does for a few weeks to see what data/metadata his phone sends to what servers etc. Problem, we can't seem to find an app (free) which does this... Any recommendations?14
For all those that saw my previous post about Facebook embedding tracking metadata into photos: I just released a website for my project that allows you to obfuscate the tracking data in your browser.
Hopefully this is helpful to some people :)2
We were in a meeting today and it came my turn to talk.
me: "I am working on something not fun. I am tracking down a bug in X software that a customer has issues with."
boss: "It is like an easter egg hunt."
me: "Yes, but instead of eggs I am going to find a pile of crap."
me: "Its not chocolate..."
The original code I am wading through is very likely my boss' code.3
Installing Unreal plugins from github be like:
clone, try to build
me: can you tell me why?
me: With the powers of MS VS I command you, tell me why the fuck you aren't building!?!
unreal: yeah I need that dependency in this plugin fo rmotion tracking
me: we don't do motion tracking *comment it out*
unreal: there I build it.
... I feel like I was a Karen, went to talk to the manager (VS) who gave me a proper explanation to why the employee had to behave this way.2
Apparently USPS tracking numbers are case sensitive... I missed a delivery today so went online to check the status.
The code was RAxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTR
I first typed the letters in lowercase and it said package not found...
Really???!!!!!! Don't you think all those numbers are already too long...3
"How much info can we get from cookies? I want to get gender, approx. age and at least first name. That's possible, right?"
Me: "that's not how cookies work.. the info needs to be stored somewhere, where we can access it. It's not in guests cookies"
"How does Google do then? They're tracking everything we do.. *bla* *bla*"
- my business partner..........5
Installed Cookie Clicker yesterday. This app literally bombs my PiHole with ad- and tracker domains.
This is pretty bad...9
Twitter should be connected to a health tracking device so that users would only be able to reply to tweets as long as their pulse and blood pressure is still on a relaxed level. This could prevent dysfunctional "social" media "discussions" a lot.11
Reduced a page load time from 23.8 seconds to 0.5 seconds by disabling tracking of entities on the page. Felt awesome.4
Time tracking. 😡🤮 If I’m salaried and only working on one project for one client, why the hell should I waste my time making weekly reports of how many hours I spent coding, reviewing pull requests, and sitting in (mostly pointless) meetings?6
Windows 10 now let's you step through a options menu, which shows automatically after the new update, to select which kind of tracking you want to have. This makes it way more transparent for not tech savy people:)10
Sitting here watching my wife drive toward the house on FindMy.
I'm not creepy. She has a Rueben Sandwich for me. I am tracking the Rueben Sandwich.
4 more miles. Reuben Sandwich.12
I usually convince myself like "no corporate/government has enough computational resources to classify useful information from enormous pile of worthless junk they could blindly collect from tracking every single step of all their users."
But every time I see this, it's like I hear them saying "Why we should bother? You just handpick the important ones. Thank you."9
Tracking my time. I always forget to do it while I’m working and end up having to bullshit it at the end of the month. And then it takes like two hours to finish. 🤮8
Have you seen the new Amazon tracking system?
It shows where the package is if it is 10 stop away. (I think 10 stops)
Now I don't have to stay at the door and freeze my balls.
Now I can see from my screen. :D7
Wow, the India Post's official website has a captcha while tracking a package.
The funny thing is, the captcha is in a text format, meaning it can be copied (yes, ctrl + c works) and be pasted in the text field.
COMPLETELY DEFEATS THE WHOLE PURPOSE.
cheers to its developer.6
Has anyone had to hack into a server so they can set up their work,
Literally have a client asking me to do this change to their site and they are asking the dev who is controlling it but they just not letting me access ..
Long night ahead 🙄 got to add a ftp account ... All I need to do is add small lines of code for tracking, but this guy doesn't want to let me on it cause I'm slowly taking over his work... if he did his job right it's not like it would be happening anyway6
There you are, fiddling with next.js webpack settings, because your isomorphic JS-in-CSS-in-JS SSR fallback from react-native-web to react-dom throws a runtime error on your SSR prerendering server during isomorphic asynchronous data prefetching from Kubernetes backend-for-frontend edge-server with GraphQL.
You have all that tech to display a landing page with an email form, just to send spam emails with ten tracking links and five tracking beacons per email.
Your product can be replaced by an Excel document made in two days.
It was developed in two years by a team of ten developers crunching every day under twelve project managers that can be replaced with a parrot trained to say “Any updates?”
Your evaluation is $5M+. You have 10,000 dependency security warnings, 1000 likes on Product Hunt, 500 comments on Hacker News, and a popular Twitter account.
Your future looks bright. You finish your coffee, crack your knuckles and carry on writing unit tests.5
I know Google isn't the worst company in the world. But some of their data tracking just seems a bit odd. Such as keeping audio logs each time you use Google on your phone. Or when it picks up random bits of conversation. Along with them keeping track of where your going, and where you have been. Even if Google maps isn't running.
And one of my all time favorites is when Google Allo was a thing, it used to have access to my camera randomly without actually opening the app. My phone will tell me different logs each time Allo opened the camera without my permission.
I know they need to collect data in order to advance some of their fields of tech. But it just seems a bit intrusive when companies like Google do this.12
When I was in school, people came to me every once in a while, wanting to make a new great MMORPG with destructible terrain and factions.
Then came the guys who wanted to make a new amazing app that will help them fix some minor life inconveniences (like tracking expiry dates on the groceries in your fridge).
And now there are guys who want to make blockchain, IoT and chatbot based startups.
I just want to watch youtube and post shit on the internet. :(1
The school I work at was supposed to implement a new attendance-tracking system. It required teachers to log in to the system using the laptop in each classroom, and mark the attendance.
Oh, and by the way, the same system would be used to track grades.
How would they be sure nobody could get into the system? One student from each class would be chosen to be sure the system is logged out when the teacher leaves!
Thank God they haven't started using this system yet.1
I write a thesis about some data mining project.
I need to process 15 million tracking points - today I finally finished coding my algorithm. I was pretty excited and pressed run:
Now, after 2,5 hours of processing, my program got already through a third of all tracking points, as I realized:
I gave my algorithm a non-valid output path.
And that thouht stuck me, as I was already on my way home.
Now I have to go tomorrow (on my day off) to work, to fix and run it again.14
Title: Google can track your porn history, even in incognito mode
Body(tl;dr version): Pornsites use Google Analytics
You little idiotic motherfucking tech savvy wannabe, most of the websites use some form of user tracking services.
Hell, even the blog/news website you work for probably does.22
**idea** => implemented.
An android application which aims to track Emergency Response Vehicles(e.g. Ambulance, Firetrucks) nearby.
Any suggestions, feature ideas are welcomed.
If you wish to contribute:
P.S. I'm new to Git.21
I don't mind ads in general, I just hate that they provide tracking capabilities. That's why I block all of them. (No, still haven't found a privacy friendly advertisement provider/platform)4
I never had any problem with Google tracking my activities. I love their services and I feel like they're using my data to really serve me better.
But I do have problems with Amazon and Facebook.
Amazon keeps disturbing me with their annoying ads recommending things I've already purchased.
Using Facebook on the other hand is like standing nude in public.19
Definetly signing in and out of my companies time tracking system.
It only works in internet explorer 8 and is a real pain -.-5
while true; do
echo "Drop everything this $LATEST_TICKET is your highest priority now!"
Those GDPR nag screens actually are more damaging than useful. Nobody has the energy to jump through the hoops all different sites set up for you to opt-out of tracking. Yet you will constantly see those pages if you have opted out.
If you use some privacy extensions that block tracking cookies and stuff, you will keep getting those nag screens, because they have no idea whether you have seen it or not (because of no tracking)
So browsing the web has become the constant of:
1) Search something
2) Deal with nagscreens
3) See the page
4) Go to other page
5) Repeat from step two
I wonder what this will lead to? People are less likely to visit random pages and stick to ones they have account on? Will darknet become more popular? Will somebody design some standard way to get rid of this nagscreen wave?11
Implemented complex AD tracking system for offline conversions back to ads.
Me: It's done and works and it's based on cookies.
Tech Manager: What if the cookies get deleted all the tracking is gone.......
Me in my head: Stop trying to be clever with the dotdotot ....
Me in real life: Same as Analytics and Adwords .......all that tracking is gone.
FN smart ass.2
here's one for ya: we devlop, use and sell a crm with extensive project managment, task assignemt and time tracking modules in it.
It is the main income ofbthe company.
Yet somehow we're still required to send an email with status update at the end of the week.
FFS i don't remember what i did on monday and all the 100 micro tasks that jumped in between.
That will take me an hour to gather the info and write an email that software automaticaly sends out everyday to PM anyway. :((1
Wtf? What kind of user agent header is that? Why don't you go ahead and insert my fucking social security number in there, Android? According to amiunique, this is literally a unique header ON ITS OWN.8
Got an email from an extension developer who releases code under GPL. Had a list of all sites using "our copy" of his software and demanding that we pay twice as much now for download access. We've only asked for support on one domain ever so this feels like an underhanded way to treat customers when your software is supposed to be GPL.
Absolutely need his product so we paid it. Feeling very annoyed that GPL software license isn't really being honored. And it's creepy that he's tracking it that way.5
My boss had a 50 page word document where he add any bugs he has found (he likes to test before it goes to QA) we then have to read that document for any changes (hi-lighted in blue) then add them to our bug tracking system. Any updates that are made on the ticket we have to add to the word document.
We tried letting him use our bug tracking tool but he hated using it as the padding on the navigation links was too big. We would have to redesign the 3rd party tool just for him4
A client asked me to include a GA tracking code into her website,
I said yea I'll add it for you, just send me the code snippet please :)
she sent me the URL to google analytics login page....
I told her that I need the code snippet not the URL.
She replied: yah that's what I sent.
If you want developers to track of their hours (for grants etc) then that is fine.
If you require them in a to be in a markdown file in a repository then you are fucking up.
If you won’t pay for any quality time tracking software for your developer then you are an idiot!2
My company has been looking for a project time tracking and reporting app/website for 2 years but are too cheap to buy one. So they want me to develop one to their specifications which are forever changing. Let's say I've intentionally wasted so much time "perfecting it". it's been done for 2 months.6
Excited to use my new mechanical keyboard. Awwww YISSS! Been waiting forever.
But seriously who thought of combining Fedex and the United States Postal Service in a delivery method. Sure it sounds great in theory but from my experience, Fedex has the worst tracking ever and USPS is slow in delivering to business addresses.11
When you're mentally debugging a module and you have an intuition about the point of failure.
So you start mentally tracking variables, going down functions calls, moving from one class to another until finally you reach that one line of code that you feel is getting the wrong parameters.
You substitute in the 10 different variables you have been mentally tracking and find out that...
THE LINE OF CODE IS GETTING THE CORRECT PARAMETERS, AND IS FUNCTIONING AS IT SHOULD.
Jesus fucking stupid backend developers that don't listen when you tell them their shit doesn't work. So you end up wasting time again and again tracking down these fucking obscure issues that are caused by THE SAME FUCKING BACKEND ISSUE3
For about 1.5 years on and off, we've been developing a system to rate tickets/requests sent to our team. We wrote it in Angular, and it turned into this feature-rich gorgeous application with custom-built graphical statistic tracking, in-app social networking capabilities, robust user profiles, etc.
Eventually, we no longer had time to work on it along with all the other applications we're developing. So we passed ownership of the app over to a couple of other developers on our team. You'd think that they'd just work off what we already built and keep the robust environment we created for them. But nope, instead of keeping everything we already built, they scrapped it all and started from scratch using React instead of Angular, and removed all of those robust features and turned the app into a shell of its former self. No more statistic tracking, no more social networking capabilities, no more fancy user profiles. Just a single page with a number representing how many "Good" tickets you've sent to us, and how many "Bad" tickets you've sent.
1.5 years and hundreds of hours worth of work, all gone and replaced with the most rudimentary basic React app ever.2
Does time tracking makes you anxious? I just had a small project for a fixed price(no time tracking) and I felt so much less anxiety while working. This one ticking clock makes my work so much stressful.8
"Apple and Google will ban the use of location tracking in covid19 contact tracing apps on their stores to ensure user privacy and to prevent governments from using the syatem to compile data on citizens"
That surrealist moment when Firefox told me it stopped the international journal of robotics research from tracking my social media...
Other Team: "our builds don't clean up properly"
*docker rm -f $(docker ps -a)*
Other Team: "our builds keep filling up machines"
*docker rmi $(docker images -q)*
Random Team Member: "My builds keep failing on service foo randomly exiting"
Other Random Team Member: "Why is there no caching on our builds"
team panics thinking it's their fault as our main job still passes, as it's on another machine.
When we find out after tracking build history
Sometimes getting tickets from the clients feels like a Sherlock Holmes adventure. Figuring out what the hell they meant, tracking down resources that should be included in the ticket, so much fun. I need to buy a pipe and a spyglass.6
Don't take your Android phone when you commit a crime. Otherwise you'll get a notification next day...
How would you like to rate this crime scene you visited yesterday...
What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.11
Why is it so hard to convice coworkers (other programmers) to use source control? Yes it's an extra step every day or so but it can be so helpful and save so much more time tracking down versions and when the bug first appeared. Also, piece of mind if your computer every gets hosed.7
"We value your privacy, that's why we want you to agree to all of these tracking cookies."
Fucking GDPR, is getting on my nerves now, can't go anywhere without encountering a cookie wall.10
We use Exact for our time sheets/hour tracking. How it's supposed to work:
-Manager plans my hours in Exact.
- I work those hours on the given projects
== All fine till here ==
But then ... there is a button (don't know the correct translation) "realise" which books the planned hours for me. So I don't have to do it manually.
This simply didn't work!! No one seem to know why not... Not even the guys at Exact.
Since it's web based I opened the developers window and looked for the call behind the button. You would think it would be at least an Ajax call thingy (I'm not completely into JS)
Turns out it's a readable JS function!
It doesn't stop there... It first makes all calculations on what to display, at last, at the fucking end, it checks a setting whether to proceed the booking or not!!!!
So I found and switched the setting and tried the button again.... Now it fucking works...
No fucking way I am going to tell Exact what the problem is 😫2
Deactivated my Facebook account today. Enough of that shit, enough of excessive data tracking. Also switching to Linux on my home PC soon, already did on my laptop.5
I created a live covid19 stats tracking website.😷🚀
I also just launched this site in producthunt.
So if you find this website helpful in anyway then do upvote and share :) thank you.11
So I was just informed I have 40 tickets with my name on them. No big deal normally except that I had no idea and was scheduling based on the fact that I knew I had 25 on my plate and most of them were OBE. How did I find this out you ask? Well rather than updating the tickets in our ticket tracking system, my PM updated a spreadsheet that is out in no man's land. So it looks like I have been doing no work for the last 3 months when in reality I have been busting my ass to get shut done and fixed. Why even have a ticket tracking system?
Big tech hates Apple for introducing Anti-Tracking features into IOS14.5,
But...... this isn't what I expected to fall through after that happened.
Google is introducing a similar feature into Android 12 😱
when you try to stop tracking changes to files you added on git but instead of running the remove from cache command you run the remove from server also command. and it deletes all the cpanel config files and ruins the hosting account.3
Anyone else have 100 .txt files on the computer called note(54).txt? Or TODO(32).txt? Yeah... Someday I will compress them into one so I don't miss something important for work. Why don't we have issue tracking?!?!5
I recently learned about rubber duck debugging hence wanted to buy one.
So went on to Amazon.in to find some.
And surprise surprise guess whom did I find in my instagram feed?
Marketing has turned into stalking these days eh?2
What's the point of using the tracking then?
Or why don't you just show me the 3 weeks date as estimated arrival date instead of the wrong date showing on the tracking report currently?
Adding 7 days is fuck simple.
Why give wrong reports and false hope?4
Firefox developer fucked up this morning my development after the update -_-
The fucking "Enhancing Tracking Protection" was on a local Wi-Fi IP address(192.168...) which automatically redirected to the https of that IP, but I did setup kestrel to listen on HTTP, which resulted in a nice "Cannot enstablich a secure connection(and suck it up because ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)"
Fortunately it's easy to get rid off this cunt, just go on the shield nearby the address and disable that motherfucker.
ps: sorry for the lil rage, my morning train trip development brain cells should not be bothered by this automatic technical troubles
Further question to the Firefox developers:
WHAT THE FUCK are you thinking when you force developers to automatic HTTPS redirection when you should know more than anyone that development is 360deg(and not 90 like your mom)1
Hi my dear fellow coders, I have a small request for you.
If you are among those coders who are working on microchipping people / quantum dot something, tracking people, classifying people, AI, ML or any other such software which is going to harm or cage us or take away our freedom. Please stop doing so.
Why I came out with this rant?
I myself am working on a covid-19 screening app which would rate people based on symptoms and if they seem high risk they would not be allowed to enter unless they do a covid-19 test. I am tracking their movement and the requirement is to restrict people’s movement.
My conscience says that this is incorrect and and I should not be a part of such things which take away the freedom and liberty of people.
I am stopping it now.15
1)net neutrality and open source
2)the fall of fb, microsoft and google.Seriously all of them are either tracking you, selling your private data or irritating you by their stupid updates(come On, microsoft -_-).PS : amazon ,be careful.
3)infinity stones and wasp's suit.( umm, they can count as technology too,right?)4
Surely you can add the tracking number to the URL in the text message, rather than having to go back to the message to copy and paste the tracking number into your website. Royal Mail.
So I was messing with mitmproxy in my phone and for some reason all Google services are blocked on it.
Apps hang when I suppose they're requesting to Google api, though chrome works for some reason.
I just realised Google even tracks the links you share with your contacts via chrome's address bar.
I'm thinking of going no-Google, any rom recommendations?
Somewhere out there, a middle manager looked at SAP's time tracking tool and thought, "This, yes, this is exactly what we need in our organisation"1
Back in the days when I knew only Windows, I used to be a Microsoft fan. I wanted to use only Microsoft products. I had a Hotmail email account that Microsoft acquired. I used a version of Windows and Microsoft Office (even though I didn't know at the time that it was pirated). I wanted to be a Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) and promote Microsoft everywhere.
Fast forward to now (or maybe to the time after I got introduced to GNU/Linux), I started hating Microsoft solely for the reason that they had a price-tag on everything. Later on, when I got to open-source software, I hated Microsoft for making all of their software closed-source. When I decided to move out of the Microsoft environment, my next favorite was of course, Big Brother (Google, if you haven't gotten it) - Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive. My personal information was the price to pay for the services even though I wasn't OK with that fact.
Then again, I realized that you could actually have your own stuff if you had the know-how. Compile / host your own software on your own systems. Oh, then I went on a compile spree. That's when I realized I didn't need any of these corporations to own my data. Today, I try my best to keep my data in my control and not some corporations who gives me free stuff for the price of my data and personal information, no thanks.4
Is it weird to try to find the perfect girl by writing a script that finds out what person has most in common with me by searching through all fb / instagram pages I follow and tracking a score for all the other people that follow the same pages?12
Oculus (Meta/Facebook) support be like:
- Hello, I have an issue. Tracking has stopped working after one of the updates
- Hello, I'm another fellow who has this problem
- Hello, here,s a link where a bunch of people are complaining about the same
- Hi, I am from the Oculus side. We will check it and let you know
** marks ↑↑ comment as SOLUTION **
Case closed! Good job everybody.
"You can Download Sublime Merge, and try it for yourself - there's no time limit, no accounts, no metrics, and no tracking. The evaluation version is fully functional, but is restricted to the ***light theme only.***"
In your butt light theme haters ;)4
ordered a new laptop bag, tracking said it was delivered Sunday, but fucking USPS forgot to put the parcel locker key in my mailbox. fml. I just want my bag.2
Hi, guys, about a month ago i created a covid 19 live tracking website for my portfolio. But today remember i could ask for review in devRant about the site. So i hope you give me any upgrade suggestion for the website.Anything like ui/ux or new content or faults etc

cool computer related things, tracking chat messages, lots of computers, tech things, etc. chill vibe.
so far so good.6
Google tracks Android users even with location services turned off.
Fuck Google & Apple; Are there any decent mobile operating systems that actually respect your privacy?11
Question: tl;dr: looking for an open source bug tracking tool, or one that's affordable for small freelancers.
I'm working as freelancer with a client on a project and currently all the bugreporting/feature request/information/discussions/and other stuff happen by Telegram (not my first choice but hey, you know clients).
It happend twice, that I forgot about the specs of a feature we discussed briefly, because there was to much going on and I wasn't able to find it. So the next logical step would be to get a bugtracker.
So far my favorite would be http://www.redmine.org/
Does any one of you have good or bad expirience with it? Would you recommend something else, if so what and why? Other stuff I should consider?6
When you reply to an issue, and either:
a) no one replies, then you get asked about it days or weeks later
b) they completely ignore it and ask why it's not done
Tracking status of an item from a Kickstarter I backed. Shipping to me in the US. Yeah, that should be here any day now.7
I spent most of a day a few weeks ago tracking down and fixing a NaN bug in a framework I use. I hacked it into my local copy of the framework's code.
Today I have the same bug, and after several hours of searching I finally realize I'd updated to a new version of said framework and so had overwritten my fix....
So I use a TV shows tracking app and for some reason, all the titles of the shows have been replaced by "your mama don't dance". Wtf?5
Thanks, AfterShip.com, for working flawlessly while the system I was building was in dev/test mode and for the first few days in live mode, then completely crapping the bed the first day I needed you to work with real tracking data with the live system. You were the ONE thing that was working consistently well, and you had to go and ruin it.4
Fuck you BBC, I just want toblosten to fucking radio and you tell me that I "need" to sign in.
I do not want you to tell me what to losten to. I do not want "relevant" content, just want to listen to 30 mins of news.
Then you say it is easy to signup, but then ask for my exact date of birth as the first question wtf ...5
Manager signed up an affiliate last night to our affiliate tracking software around 11pm. I get an email at 10am asking why I don't have them added to our internal database yet.
"because I was sleeping n shit"
I also explained to him it's not mission critical because it takes 3-5 days before an affiliate will start sending traffic anyways.
nothing worse than undocumented API changes in the bug tracking system you implement against for your company...1
Just me, or does anyone else abandon the pcmag site because of this?
Changed to lowest cookie setting but takes ages to change throughout their network. Bye bye!4
Designed and implemented a bug tracking service for the team that I was working, even now everyone is loving and using it.
Google apparently announced, they would stop most types of tracking.
Whats up with that and why would they give up their almost monopoly on advertisement.
Am I missing something?14
Work has been inefficiently using multiple cron jobs to run php scripts to generate pre-baked data.
The last two days I took the steps needed to internalize all those scripts and run them from an individual php controller which is ran from Jenkins. My script keeps track of scheduling and error tracking.
I'd say I'm pretty proud of what I came up with.1
What do you guys think about DuckDuckGo? Is it trustworthy and are there any differences between the web and app version? Also, should I use a VPN alongside it?12
I just implemented the cookie popup you wanted me to make. And now you give me a call that your tracking code doesn't appear in the source code?
Oh, but you don't see the cookie popup? You saw it right? So you've already set your cookie permissions, probably not to accept tracking cookies. We can check by... what's that?
If I can make the tracking code appear anyway?
Yeah, sure, no problem, change will be live in five minutes.2
We were to integrate our mobile apps with our company's analytics/tracking platform. So we asked the team responsible for said platform for some docs, API and such.
What we get was a js file and an instruction to put it in <head> section of a website.
I use console.log for debugging in JS, but I might try .alert as I feel that it could make me feel like a person tracking status of a rocket launch. You know, message appears saying "Stage 1 successfully completed. Ready to attempt connection to database. Good luck to you all." and if the program encounters an error it would say "It was a pleasure working with you all, gentlemen.", wait for 5 seconds and then crash.2
Is it possible to track down an IP from a Skype contact? Need to find out what country they are sending from. Asking for a friend.4
WHY IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE FROM MEGACORPS??
Yes, am looking at you EMC, Oracle and IBM. Either they have tons of portals-e-delivery-shittorama or their softwares suddenly disappear for n amount of time without notice. Mix this up with broken links or CONSTANTLY REBRANDING YOUR SHITTY PRODUCTS SO YOU NEED TO HIRE A PERSONAL ASSISTANT THAT ONLY WORKS WITH TRACKING THESE PORTALS TO HELL
Also, your websites are slow as shit.
Today I came across a very strange thing or a coincidence(maybe).
I was working on my predictive analytics project and I had registered on Kaggle(repository for datasets) long back and was searching on how to scrape websites, as I couldn't find any relevant dataset. So, while I was searching for ways to scrape a website, suddenly after visiting a few websites, I get notifications of a new email. And it was from Kaggle with the subject line
"How to Scrape a Tidy Dataset for Analysis"
Now I don't how to feel about it. Mixed feelings! It is either a wild coincidence, or Kaggle is tracking all the pages visited by the user. The latter makes more sense. By the way, Kaggle wasn't open in any of the tabs on my browser.1
In India there was an incident yesterday, talk about being careless. A covid tracking app which was promoted in every media, paper and they even changed caller tune of entire nation to let people know and download the same app.5
What is it with shipping websites sending you an email saying "hey, here's your tracking number and tracking URL!" and then that *very same link* saying "this tracking number doesn't exist, it can take a few days to show up sometimes, try again!" I'd understand if this was one knock-off weird company, but it seems to be *all of them*.
Seriously, how hard is it to just initialise a tracking number at the point you send that email so it at least shows a "parcel not yet picked up" or similar message? I know it doesn't make much material difference to tracking but it just reeks of bad UX and lazy / incompetent devs.7
I'll just leave this here:
No tracking, no revenue: Apple's privacy feature costs ad companies millions
Me: uses MS Edge with Strict tracking prevention
Every website: "Please disable AdBlock"
Why are you so fricken sensitive?
I need to get an anti-anti-adblock.3
I signed up for a trial of some time tracking software. Apparently the company that owns it is incredibly aggressive with their sales department. They sent me 10 emails within the first week (still sending even though I unsubscribed) and have started calling me every day. What have I gotten myself into.2
Company tracking software on your computers? My company is starting to talk about it due to everyone being remote. I don't want to be that guy talking about 1984 and big brother but it really sits with me wrong. Philosophically at least. Most of us are against it and have proposed a united front of refusal. Thoughts?13
Do you think free VPN providers are reliable and not tracking our personal data?
If your answer is Yes then please let me know name of that VPN provider.11
The following paper combines recurrent neural nets for vision with methods from reinforcement learning research:
Apparently an agent learned to catch a ball 85% of the time, without being explicitly told to track the ball. The RL algorithm rewarded the agent *only* for successfully catching the ball. The system itself used this reward signal to set its *own* policy/goal, which was used to guide it toward the goal of tracking the ball itself--all on its own.
Behold, the very infancy of the paperclip maximizer problem.3
"The call to the tracking was removed by the previous developer months ago" the eccom manager thought......4
I just *thought* about buying a domain. Now I get goDaddy ads literally everywhere. That's some next level spying right there. :o5
i was given one month to build a cross platform mobile app that uses GPS tracking and handles employee clock-ins. Help4
Anyone else really fucking despise the fact that OSX opens location tracking every time a wifi or Ethernet is connected and as far as I’ve found it can’t be turned off.
I’m ok with a service doing it on a request but not an OS that’s clearly gathering information. If I didn’t have to use it I’d throw petrol on it and burn it to the ground2
Why do these e-marketing companies always have some kind of manager/consultant/strategist/marketeer/whatever to handle emails between me and their devs. Instead of emailing with another technical person and quickly fixing the problem I end up sending one billion emails to someone who has no clue on what needs to be done to fix te problem. From now on my emails contains a part called "to your developer:" explaining the technical part of the email.
And no - I don't want to plan a conference call... just let me code dammit!
Advent of Code day 13 !
Fucking amazing day. Oh boy i love this one.
We got a fucking breakout in intcode (Which is code for VM we finished in day 9).
And we had to beat the game.
At first i was like uhmmmmmmm im supposed to play the game ? (Which is actually a possibility you can do)
But just tracking the ball X position and comparing it to padle X position and then outputing left or right.
That was enough. Sad that i had to go to school and had to finish it just now. But still a good one.
I think UPS' Api documentation and service must be the worst documented and build API I have ever seen from a corporate.
1. The developer website is a mess. A total mess. You can barely find the API type you are looking for.
2. When you get the API and download the documentation, the files, .pdf etc is still a mess. Pages long that most are craps.
3. Each request returns Status Code 200. Even if it is an error. This blew my mind.
4. Each request, based on error type or based on tracking activity returns different JSON schema.
For example, the JSON Schema for a shipment in transit is different from JSON schema for a shipment that has been delivered. A shipment that has been returned, a shipment that required signature etc. They are different from each other.
5. And the worst. They do not provide with test tracking codes. I have found some on internet, but they do not work in development and production environment.4
My phone died today...
I was following up on a production ramp-up... Open one of our tracking dashboards through corporate VPN and while loading... It crashed...
Reboot after non-stop reboot... Cleared cache, factory reset... Stabilized for an hour or two and it's crashing again...
I give up... Rest now my friend... You did good, you did good!4
Problem: Our three tools are not tracking what we're working on / done.
Solution: Need a fourth tool, or maybe just more moving back and forth between the three tools.
Expectation: We'll be more efficient.3
Not more accurately tracking my hours worked with estimates, then wondering why I feel like I've worked so hard for seemingly so little monetary gain.2
I know some sites are tracking and collecting a lot of data for advertising. But this is fucking insane... 200!!!! for marketing? For real? Holy shit!
Fuck off already...
(A shitty Danish newspaper - can't even remember why I visited it)2
Just reported a minor tracking bug I found on WebKit to the WebKit bugzilla, and I have a few thoughts:
1. Apple product security can be kind of vague sometimes - they generally don't comment on bugs as they're fixing them, from the looks of it, and I'm not sure why that is policy.
2. Tracking bugs *are* security bugs in WebKit, which is quite neat in a way. What amazes me is how Firefox has had a way to detect private browsing for years that they are still working on addressing (indexedDB doesn't work in private browsing), and chrome occasionally has a thing or two that works, with Safari, Apple consistently plays whack-a-mole with these bugs - news sites that attempt to detect private browsing generally have a more difficult time with Safari/WebKit than with other browsers.
I guess a part of that could be bragging rights - since tracking bugs (and private browsing detection bugs, I think) count as security bugs, people like yours truly are more incentivised to report them to Apple because then you get to say "I found a security bug", and internal prioritisation is also higher for them.
WakaTime is another great tool for tracking time designed for developers which hooks directly into your editor.
How do you guys stay on track with personal projects? To do lists, issue tracking, kanban boards, app... ?3
I dunno for you guys and I am sorry in advance but what is jira? "a proprietary issue tracking product providing bug tracking, issue tracking and project management functions" right?
so why the fuck do I need to write a fucking "Log Work" when I pee, when I poop, when I go out taking a break, when I drink coffee...2
definitely designing and building an affiliate platform including ad tracking , member sign-up, and content delivery for a porn company
I don't want to spend a whole day tracking a crash back through multiple systems just to find a buffer that was initialised with garbage, wasn't written into completely, and as a result just *happened* to contain an exact value that causes a crash later on. If you're doing weird low-level things in C/C++, ZERO-INITIALISE YOUR DAMN BUFFERS.
I'm trying to update my addon-list, what are (firefox-)addons you say are a must have? (My focus is on privacy, anti-tracking and shitloads of open tabs)
As of now my addons are:
DDG privacy essentials
Self destroying cookies
Google researchers have exposed details of multiple security flaws in Safari web browser that allowed user's browsing behavior to be tracked.
According to a report : The flaws which were found in an anti-tracking feature known as Intelligent Tracking Prevention, were first disclosed by Google to Apple in August last year. In a published paper, researchers in Google's cloud team have identified five different types of attacks that could have resulted from the vulnerabilities, allowing third parties to obtain "sensitive private information about the user's browsing habits."
Apple rolled out Intelligent Tracking Prevention in 2017, with the specific aim of protecting Safari browser users from being tracked around the web by advertisers and other third-party cookies.2
Hacktoberfest this year
Too lazy to do contributions
I shall rest this year
And managing to get the swags is cumbersome, international shipping sucks especially when tracking isn't provided
Project Lead: The DevOps department just got a GitLab instance installed on our internal network. We're gradually going to move all our projects onto it and move away from BitBucket and Jenkins really soon.
Project Lead: We're still using JIRA and Confluence for issue tracking and documentation though because the higher ups said so.
So, I will try to use devRant as an issue traker for itself!
Sometimes a gif shows on click just a blank black screen and an x for closing on top left corner. And it does not change after some waiting.
The issue stays the same after closing and opening the specific gif again and again. If it is loading for a long time, then a animation indicating that would be nice.
Strangely, other gifs are loaded and shown instantly.
I hope it is not too bold to reference you: @dfox4
Started working with a startup. They have one Dev guy, who for some reason is using both python 3 and 2 in the same git repo, and had no requirement.txt or anything to really track dependencies....
For fuck sake, the Dev guy is actually intelligent, but really freaking messy.. why can't he have this basic thing done...1
What are your opinions on this? Seems pretty Orwellian to me....
"Courier tracking websites - the thrill of refreshing for 'real-time' updates, deciphering error messages, and navigating through a UI designed by a caffeine-fueled coder on a psychedelic trip. It's like playing hide-and-seek with my package! Can we please simplify and speed up this tracking game, dear coding wizards?"2
Talking about some new feature he haven't totally thought about. so i tell him to think about it.
Talking about a bug, but can't reproduce it.
Talking about another enormous new feature but halt it after hearing the initial estimation.
Total time waster = 1.5 hours for every day.
DON'T LET CUSTOMERS WASTE YOUR DEVELOPMENT TIME.
instead of talking - use project tracking software (i.e. JIRA)
Designed a person detection and tracking algorithm based on RCNN and lukas-kanade object tracking algorithm in openCV python.
Need help in cases of occlusion any suggestions?4
Made a little change to the project.
Went out to grab coffee.
Forgot what change was made.
2 hours spent tracking down the change.
People ask me why I work 12 hours a day. Here's why.4
a "landing page", that was just any and all features of the application forced into one huge, unbearably slow, indeniably confusing page.
which took months of work. which i said beforehand "nobody will use it". which now, through the magic of user tracking, is proven to be used by nobody.2
What is your preffered way of branching and potential integration of issue tracking?
Just curious to see as this topic causes a lot of discussions in office the last days.5
Doing the Full Stack Nanodegree from Udacity
Using Google's oAuth Sign in in my Flask App, I realized that no matter what browser I use, I was unable to logout, Google always threw an error my way. I figured something must be wrong with my code..
Searched on Google, couldn't find anything relevant, gave up on first 4 results(not pages, yeah I'm that lazy!)
Spent 3 hours Debugging at different points, removing all the abstraction I've put in using various libraries (Bad move)
Finally it dawned on to me to check Udacity forum as well. It's a frickin cache/cookie thing. Tried the app in an incognito window, worked like a charm. Reverted code back with all the libraries, worked like a charm again!
FUCK YOU GOOGLE! In your attempts to track users, you're even making our work difficult!
(in hindsight, I should probably be better at asking/looking for help)1
uBlock Origin hides the ++ buttons because they have a class of `plusone` and plus one is a tracking company. sigh...3
So In Malaysian app named MySejatera (fyi, mysejahtera is a covid tracking app) has been comprommised! hahahha someone run a while loop GET Request (yes they use GET request for sending otp, wtf) of the script to send OTP to random user found in the database , hahahahaha
- Debugging some application locally (with debugger)
- 20-30 manual step-ins, tracking those values VERY closely
- debugger becomes a little sluggish
- move mouse to select a line to jump to
- cursor is lagging: all jumpy and everything
- everything freezes.
sooo...either reboot the laptop and lose all the work, or wait for OOMK to kick in, which could be hours, depending on the level of memory starvation.13
What happened to that trans-Atlantic devrant stress ball project? Is there a website for tracking it or something???2
If any iOS developers are wanting a good repo to follow, I believe HeadGazeLib is about to take off.
There's been a few articles about how eBay is using head tracking to allow for hands free shopping (huge for accessibility!) If the rumors are true, then Apple should be announcing many more devices that support Facial Recognition (like the iPhone X). If they do, then there will a huge surge in games/apps that tap into that technology.
HeadGazeLib makes it super easy to incorporate Head Tracking in your apps, so I think with all the publicity, it will quickly rise to the #1 head tracking "add-on".
Used Momentum to-do lists for money-tracking - who owns me how much for which project etc. Well from time to time Momentum just completely erases them. This was painful.
Momentum is really good extension but I still do not get it why it asks for email and password in the first place when it actually does not save anything in cloud.
So, I have a pretty decent understanding of big complete languages like Java, I build android applications following several design patterns, solid principles, building big stuff with databases and servers and libraries interconnected with gradle, tracking everything with git, using tdd and functional programming capabilities blablabla ... And I still have trouble making sense of a FREAKING STUPID SHELL SCRIPT I MEAN WHO CAME UP WITH THAT SINTAX I HATE IT SO MUCH OMG I CAN'T EVEN
But for real everytime I need to read a '.sh' I literally wanna throw my computer away and die. Am I alone?
Finally go around to de-Googling my phone:
Feels good reducing my tracking footprint4
After inputting all of the defect info into the bug tracking tool, QA writes a quick summary of their findings and goes home.
Love explaining to mgmt why developers could not fix bugs because they had no access to the bug tracking software.
1 day.... X number of bugs... 0 progress
I learned something new while trouble shooting an email template today.
There was a weird margin at the end of my template and I have no idea where it came from. I inspected elements and found a 1x1 image.
Turns out it's a tracking link being loaded as an image.
Now I get why they call it a tracking pixel. It's literally 1 pixel.9
How about "it's not your business to know that as long as they deliver what's necessary"?
That whole tracking and screenshot software movement for remote work is so vile, main reason I work at fixed rates where I just add a percentage of space on top and then do new contracts if they exceed that.12
Note to self: when tracking down why your data differs from the DB...make sure the damn Workbench view is fresh. It saves a couple hours of frustration and misery.
Fighting phone addiction. Do you know an iOS app that let me track my (monthly, weekly, daily) phone usage that doesn't require all time GPS tracking permission? Moment, Flipd, Offtime, BreakFree all requre GPS traking.8
Do you think this is a stupid tech stack to create a sleep tracking app? Angular as the frontend and Wordpress rest api as backend. I need to use these for a college project...9
Do you think tracking work hours by ticket makes sense?
I think it's a waste of dev time. Not sure from PM pov.6
Ordered myself a new laptop, paid extra for next day delivery before 10:30 (not cheap)
Get the tracking number and it looks like they have used my delivery address and billing postcode :/3
I am planning on applying for a job doing crime lab IT support. I have acquired the necessary skills and added them to my resume.
Tracking IP addresses1
Almost all of the issue trackers
Why can't any of them just decide to be good for one kind of process. Trying to fit in support for all of them just makes the products worse.
If you really want to cater to every style of issue tracking/work queue just make a low code platform from the start instead of the unholy mess that is jira1
I think we should ask the CDC to start versioning viruses. I mean we started with COVID-19. From what I hear it should be COVID-19.1 or COVID-19.2 by now.2
The analytics guy just sent me updated tracking specs for a web site.
There are two sheets in the file: "Custom Events LATEST" and "Custom Events updated". This is already confusing enough.
One of them has comments like "I'd like this to be amended", but the event specs described are the same as the ones implemented.
I asked him for clarification, turns out he wants the ones marked in black to be updated, the ones that don't have any label saying they don't need to be updated.
This is also a guy who for at least 2 years has been making columns in spreadsheets wider not by just widening them, or merging multiple cells, but by just letting text overflow into other cells.
I do wonder how some people manage to keep a job.
Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2
Today I came to work and all our main systems where offline (Gitlab, Artifactory, Time tracking, ...). Found out that one of the HDDs of our server (external hosted) died. I started copying some stuff from the second Raid hdd (just in case and because our backup is of course not complete [#notmyfault]) while their datacenter had a power outage.... I'm now waiting for our server to come back to get our systems running again
The time tracking app used at my company was created with Angular JS. Most functionality is quite fast so I can understand why they wanted to go this route. Unfortunately, the clock in section takes forever to load during peak traffic times... which is the only time that functionality is used. Someone found an older section of the site written with server side tech. Now everyone just bypasses the Angular clock in and uses the old one.
You shouldn't use tech for the sake of using it, it should also perform better than what it's replacing.1
...when your project TODO list is growing exponentially and you just give up tracking new ideas/feature requests
- I use the Lynx text-mode browser
Why else? Maybe I'm naïve:
- This may be a nice way to highlight websites that don't have time to join an SEO/analytics arms race.8
Error: Disk image full.
Not good on a production SMB server. Wasted 2 hours tracking the fault down....
Turns out the boss thought it would be a good idea to install syncing software as remote backup without telling anyone...
It wasn't remote :(
TLDR, need suggestions for a small team, ALM, or at least Requirements, Issue and test case tracking.
Okay my team needs some advice.
Soo the powers at be a year ago or so decided to move our requirement tracking process, test case and issue tracking from word, excel and Visio. To an ALM.. they choice Siemens Polarion for whatever reason assuming because of team center some divisions use it..
Ohhh and by the way we’ve been all engineering shit perfectly fine with the process we had with word, excel and Visio.. it wasn’t any extra work, because we needed to make those documents regardless, and it’s far easier to write the shit in the raw format than fuck around with the Mouse and all the config fields on some web app.
ANYWAY before anyone asks or suggests a process to match the tool, here’s some back ground info. We are a team of about 10-15. Split between mech, elec, and software with more on mech or elec side.
But regardless, for each project there is only 1 engineer of each concentration working on the project. So one mech, one elec and one software per project/product. Which doesn’t seem like a lot but it works out perfectly actually. (Although that might be a surprise for the most of you)..
ANYWAY... it’s kinda self managed, we have a manger that that directs the project and what features when, during development and pre release.
The issue is we hired a guy for requirements/ Polarion secretary (DevOps) claims to be the expert.. Polarion is taking too long too slow and too much config....
We want to switch, but don’t know what to. We don’t wanna create more work for us. We do peer reviews across the entire team. I think we are Sudo agile /scrum but not structured.
I like jira but it’s not great for true requirements... we get PDFs from oems and converting to word for any ALM sucks.. we use helix QAC for Misra compliance so part of me wants to use helix ALM... Polarion does not support us unless we pay thousands for “support package” I just don’t see the value added. Especially when our “DevOps” secretary is sub par.. plus I don’t believe in DevOps.. no value added for someone who can’t engineer only sudo direct. Hell we almost wanna use our interns for requirements tracking/ record keeping. We as the engineers know what todo and have been doing shit the old way for decades without issues...
Need suggestions for small team per project.. 1softwar 1elec 1mech... but large team over all across many projects.
Sorry for the long rant.. at the bar .. kinda drunk ranting tbh but do need opinions...
Motion tracking tool that tracks affine transformations, as well as perspective, given a defined shape by the user. Runs slow as fuck compared to the ones out in the market, but hey, it works. Currently, I'm figuring out how to ship computation to the GPU, though I'm not well versed in OpenCL, since cross platform is more of a priority.
When you click the notif of "more comments on a rant you commented", could it scroll down to the bottom?
Preferrably to the last comment you saw but that would require some more tracking3
Adobe "enterprise" cms... Want access to GPS location, links to external tracking sites, adverts portals... Soooo this is what Enterprise looks like by Adobe? How come they still have the legal right to "develop" software?1
Is there any time tracking tasks management tool? One where I can manage all the tasks on the timeline(based on days).
I feel the urge to perceive how much a task is taking by looking at how long the line is on the timeline.6
Embarcadero tracked my progress on a potential commercial project. To my employer, I know for a fact my employee email is not connected to my personal PC. How did they get that email?
I used the unlicensed pro version of 10.3 because I thought the community version would have the necessary components needed open the source and not break the project. I planned to use the software over the holidays to dissect the code to see what changes I can bring to the table before asking them to buy me the legit license. Embarcadero caught me. Even know my project directories. How did they do it I wonder?4
The "voluntary" Affirmative Action tracking questions on your site's job applications are no longer voluntary if you don't have an "I choose not to say" option and refuse to accept the placeholder "Choose One"...
"Refusal to provide this information will not subject you to adverse treatment." ...other than the inability to submit your application, of course.
I want to know how a certain type of software is called.
I once saw a talk where someone tracked his personal life for a year or so. This means photos are tomestamped and have a geolocation. Emails and phone calls are timestamped as well ...
On a timeline software he could then see exactly where he was and what he did on a specific date like 2 years ago...
There's a name for software that tracks all kind of data about your personal life. I think it starts with m.12
You guys think Windows 10 data tracking is bad? Server 2016 is worse. When I try and shut the machine down (it's a VM and I want to change config) it actually asks me the reason for the shutdown. I understand servers are intended to always be up but geez that's overkill. And this is only within my first hour of installation and use.4
Just created this, I hope my company won't find this OFFENSIVE or conflicting...
Is just a package for tracking parcel.
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.
That moment when a 6 month solo project is done and the next day they tell you fuck the asset tracking system
We need you to turn that into pastel evolution
Good bye hard work
Hello sleepless nights
so I spent an entire day tracking a major memory leak (10mb/s!!!). when I find it, it turns out that It's in a deep part of C++ code that I'm not allowed to touch. now I live in fear of just crashong my 16gb machine every time I debug.
Has anyone used CA's Rally for issue tracking? Is it as bad for devs as I've been warned?
We are being forced to use it instead of Jira because of the pretty reports it generates for management and I am kind of scared...5
By filling out their tracking tools in a language they can understand prior to their deadline of needing the data, being honest in their meetings, and being right about the time/complexity of the effort.
I am sure that this idea of every site tracking their users must have come from the same people who ask to hack Facebook accounts!
Hey codebroes! Give me your best programming movie, serial, documentary.
That episode from NCIS where they created a GUI for tracking down a criminal doesn't count!3
I had mistakenly added a large file to a commit, and I'm now spending 3 hours of my life just to remove it and being able to push.
I've deleted the file from tracking, but it remained in history so when I try to push, github rejects to continue.
And, still worse, trying various solutions on StackOverflow I've done a mess on the history which now looks unrelated to the remote one, and I think it's a never-end catastrophe.
It's absurd how badly designed is git, and how hard it is to use besides the 3 commands that you learnt by heart16
There are many issues with designers. Let's skip hamburger fuckups, navigations on bottom or other stuff. What pisses me of most are tables. Simple tables. As many times as i remember i told them: plaease, design this table with full borders around cells. Your design will make problems with rowspans a cellspans. Why you keep doing that? This is not like tables list in your fucking IS, where you tracking your shitty designers tasks.
How to talk with them? Blow their dicks off before discussion so they feel happy?
But you know, i'm just coder... I have no main word on design things.10
I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5
Spent an hour tracking down a bug you thought you fixed; nvm, it was just Android studio Instant run that didn't deploy the new code! (despite being turned off)
I made an app for tracking Covid-19.
Can I share the app download link with my friends here or is it against devrant to share such things8
When you spend an entire week tracking down a bug and it turns out that the bug was caused by someone using the equals operator instead of strcpy.
I've started using azure devops as a project management thing for personal stuff.
1) I've got enough stuff I'm trying to keep track of to warrant an issue tracking system for personal purposes
2) and have worked out that, of all the shit project management options out there, azure is the least shit for my uses.9
Does anybody know of any fitness bands where it is possible to programmatically read information from?2
I wish id start a inventory tracking system. I am forever forgetting what i have and where i put it.
Hello, anybody knows about any api that can parse delivery parcel tracking code and detect wich transporter it is and get the tracking infos ?2
So there is this idea in my head for creating a anon, add free, chatservice available for tor and normal adresses. Where everything is e2ee and there are multiple channels to join. Can anyone tell me if it already exists?? I basicaly want to go away form google/fb tracking1
How many people use a real bug tracker? We use a project management tool for our bug tracking and it SUCKS!
What tools do you use for project management/bug tracking?2
Question for data science people. Do you know some good multi purpose self tracking platform? Something like exist.io but more advanced? I want to setup custom tracking1
Hey, make a whole tracking interface, that's at least a month's worth of work, for something that R&D is actively working towards making obsolete in 3 weeks.
I am an Automation QA. I logged in a small issue, which eventually cascaded into a larger one. An issue which started with only the QA and DEV now has the attention of the directors as well.1
If we’re concerned about Big G tracking our location without our consent, I’m wondering why there’s actually less complains about SIM cards being trackable. They don’t even need an internet connection to get your location, and there’s no way to turn it off.

Okay soo I’m not a database guy.. I’m an embedded engineer but I’m helping one of my interns make a hardware tracking database... so we are tracking assembled products (dev samples).. but also tracking the pcbs within the product.. depending on the product it might have more than one pcb or contain other components to track.
The question is how would I set up the relationship in the tables, so depending on the say “type id” of the product it would link to a table full of feilds specfic to that “type”.. say the product is of type phone and has a pcb of this and a camera of that.. blah blah blah.... but say another product is of type “washing machine”.. which has no screen, it has a different pcb, but also has other things..
There would be a type table .. washing machine, phone, tv, camera, pcb, ecu.. etc.. but those type would need their own tables...
I guess the question is how to relate a field to different tables depending on the value of the field... is this portion all done thru query results and logic rather than pure data base schemas?
What would be the question in terms of database lingo to google search the answer lol2
I really admire and respect devs here in our country that are helping to build useful apps to combat covid-19 pandemic but please, if the National Government already has this kind of applications or in their pipeline (covid contact tracing, qrcode checkpoint, assistance, etc..) please do not try to hijack by creating similar app and market it. Instead of helping it creates confusion on which info to follow (ie DOH tracking) and which to use. #random2
Not sure what's worse, finding a bug in my code or waiting in a garage for 3 x tyres to be fitted and tracking to be done on my car! 😱1
Is it necessary to check the tracking progress again again when you are getting swags from kaggle?
Idk why I'm doing this..😁
By far it is my current project of building the industry leading CMMS (no it's not a typo, it's really CMMS). Everything from in office time management, to tracking when techs go on site, to detecting what are in pictures when sent back from our app (also my project), to sentence building, to smart auto-dispatching.... I mean this list is just endless of the features compiled in the application for just a call center. When I took the job I never knew facilities maintenance took so much and I never thought it would be this efficient.2
It's does not take a huge amount of knowledge and skill to get a program working.Kids in high school do it all the time. young men and women in college start billion-dollar business based on scrabbling together a few lines of PHP or Ruby. Hoards of junior programmers in cube farms around the world slog through massive requirements documents held in huge issue tracking systems to get their systems to "work" by the sheer force of will. The code they produce may not be pretty; but it works. It works because getting something to work-once-just is not that hard.
If you live in a relatively small town and someone comes up to you and ask you to make an employee tracking android app, and also some kind of admin panel for that(also in android).. how much would you ask him to pay, if you're just a college student?19
Tracking/logging hours, how do you do it? Is there some decent software for Linux that does this?
I wanna start tracking my time doing specific tasks, so I'm just wondering what other ppl use, if at all hehe1
Anyone know how to fix this efficiently? I'm calculating Realized gains but the output is ~ $120.
Because it's using the avg cost as the sales price of each share.
However what it should do sell the shares using FIFO.
But I can't think of how to efficiently track the purchase prices to use without replaying all the trades and tracking every single share that is bought and sold.

Was working a record keeping system for the Airport for tracking departures and arrivals and some COVID-19 data
ended up realizing that the stack i had gone with wasn't gonna cut it
Had to port the whole thing to a new web framework realizing that the one i had gone with made some operations a bit complicated
Does anyone know of any good opensource time tracking software with a focus on privacy?
I don't trust the proprietary stuff but it's useful software1
I know it doesn't really exist in one solution, but I need management software to keep track of customers (crm), projects, products, licensing and contracts, and time keeping. Right now we are using MSCRM (ugh), and old homebrew project/time tracker written in Perl spaghetti (double ugh), email (sigh) and handwritten notes (kill me). Now I suddenly find myself with a budget (somewhat) and the authority to actually fix things. Any ideas would be appreciated.
