This is what happens when it's late at night and you've been staring at something for too long... someone had to point out to me that I actually added the wrong permission :/1

I don't mind helping people when they come across an issue as chances are I already know the answer, but it's got to the point at the company I work for where some devs automatically come to me for help without even trying to debug or find the answer themselves. Even when an error is written out in black and white - "this protected function must be public"... Anyone can code, but what makes programmer good is the ability to debug.1

This has become pretty standard from our current broadband provider. Think it's time to move elsewhere...11

Most of the stuff I know comes from debugging other people's code. When working on someone else's project, I try to understand what their code is doing and think how I could make it better and if it's possible to extend the functionality to make it do other things as well.

I've just spent the last hour or so banging my head against a brick wall trying to figure out why I'm unable to retrieve some data via AJAX even though I know data is being returned as I can see it in my error log.
Turns out the permission system I wrote a few days ago actually works and because I didn't specify a permission it automatically denied my user from retrieving the data. One thing I forgot to add was an error message to tell me when I don't have sufficient permission to do something. Adding a message could have just saved me a lot of time :/1 -
Client: "This feature doesn't work! I thought you said it was done?!"
Me: "Please press CTRL+F5 and try again..."
Client: "Okay, great, works now."
A conversation I seem to have on a very regular basis.8 -
Day 3 since I purchase a laptop and my productivity level has risen significantly. Love not being restricted to my desk.2
