Math question time!

Okay so I had this idea and I'm looking for anyone who has a better grasp of math than me.

What if instead of searching for prime factors we searched for a number above p?
One with a certain special property. BEAR WITH ME. I know I make these posts a lot and I'm a bit of a shitposter, but I'm being genuine here.

Take this cherry picked number, 697 for example.

It's factors are 17, and 41. It's trivial but just for demonstration.

If we represented it's factors as a bit string, where each bit represents the index that factor occurs at in a list of primes, it looks like this

1000001000000

When converted back to an integer that number becomes 4160, which we will call f.

And if we do 4160/(2**n) until the result returns
a fractional component, then N in this case will be 7.

And 7 is the index of our lowest factor 17 (lets call it A, and our highest factor we'll call B) in our primes list.

So the problem is changed from finding a factorization of p, to finding an algorithm that allows you to convert p into f. Once you have f it's a matter of converting it to binary, looking up the indexes of all bits set to 1, and finding the values of those indexes in the list of primes.

I'm working on doing that and if anyone has any insights I'm all ears.

I browsed through my personal feed, and even though I've spend some time curating, only about 1 in a 100 is a real rant. The rest are memes, mildly funny observations, the kind of programmer humor which is only funny to non-programmers, and bland anekdotes.

And when I post something IN ALL CAPS WITH SOME FUCKING CURSEWORDS AND RAGE IN THERE YOU CUNTS ALL TELL ME TO CALM DOWN AND BE MORE POSITIVE?

What kind of a weak, smoothieslurping mindfulness convention has this community become? Do you guys just want to be a mildly funny reddit clone for easily offended hipsters?

This place was my outlet, my venting space, the spot where I didn't feel alone in frustrations.

I'm a shit programmer

I'm 29 and I assumed that by this point I'd be successful some way or another, either by being financially abundant or technically complex.

I am not, just mildly accomplished instead.

Here'a list of thing I consider challenges that I have:
* I tend to tunnel vision ideas that are terrible or execute them poorly because of said tunnel vision.
* I don't hone my skills, I usually consider my potentials the same as my actuals, as if I achieved everything already, probably product of ny huge ego.
* I communicate poorly with my boss, I sidetrack into thing he didn't ask
* I'm a mess when it comes to reading documentation online, I have the attention span of a fucking fish.
* I work alone, I have 0 networking status or skills.
* I take huge amounts of time to finish my side projects
* Of all the side projects I started I only finished one, the ones that I couldn't finish usually bevame insabely stressful things, so much and so many that I questioned myself many times if I should be a programmer or not.
* I have little discipline or organization, if I work in more than one thing at a time, i get really anxious and stressed.

I am not saying I'm not competent, I think I am (I'm looking at you imaginary scary recruiter googling this online), I'm just not really proud of myself

Any NGINX experts here? I'm completely stuck, just can't figure this one out.

Idea: Emoji passwords

I know, I know, emojis belong with teenage girls on Snapchat but there are some theoretical benefits to emoji passwords.

Brute Force attacks are useless! With such a wide range of characters and so many different combinations, they just wouldn't be viable.

Dictionary attacks are less useful! Because those require...words.

They can be easier to remember. Tell a story with your emojis. Images are easier to commit to memory than combinations of letters and numbers.

Users would adopt the feature! For whatever reason, the general population fucking loves these things. So emoji passwords probably won't take very long to see use.

I don't know much about this last one, so I saved it for last, but I would imagine that decryption would be more difficult if the available values is quite vast. I dunno how rainbow tables and hash defucking works so I'll just put this here as a "maybe"

Just learnt that Stack Exchange servers are using Windows servers with IIS. Codebase written in C# (probably ASP .NET). Not sure how I feel about this.

Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):

- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable

- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.

I got travel advertisments on my Windows 10 lock screen. I didn't remember how to get rid of them, so I had to search for it again. I was lead to this piece of fine irony on my screen.

Staring at it felt like staring at the concept of art while it's staring back. This experience left me emotional.

Just found out about Yue, a GUI library for Node.js, Lua and C++ (and owners of the "gui" package on npm).

It is so awesome! The RAM usage is so low compared to Electron! Of course it has its limitations and doesn't use HTML + CSS + JavaScript, but you can still build really good applications with it!
I'll show you what I'm making at the moment soon, so stay tuned!
