Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):
- After nearly a year in the making, the completely overhauled devRant web version was launched (https://devrant.com/rants/1255714/...)
- @linuxxx became the first devRant user to hit 100,000++! (https://devrant.com/rants/1157415/...)
- We once again pulled off the greatest April fools joke everrrr (https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...)
- @trogus started making awesome devComics and http://devcomics.com was launched
- We added a feature to allow rant filtering by post type (https://devrant.com/rants/1354275/...)
- We made it so avatars could have expressions! (https://devrant.com/rants/1563683/...)
- We had a booth at TechDay New York and got to meet some devRant users! (https://devrant.com/rants/1394067/...)
- We made major backend architectural improvements - including spinning up a special high-powered-CPU web server to handle avatar creation and make the creation process much faster (https://devrant.com/rants/1370938/...)
- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable
- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! (just a few: https://devrant.com/rants/1588218/... https://devrant.com/rants/1884724/... https://devrant.com/rants/1683365/... https://devrant.com/rants/1922950/...)
We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're continuing to constantly evaluate feedback from members of the community to decide where to take the app next. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2019,
- David and Tim26 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
We had a bit of a slow year in terms of devRant updates, but we gained some momentum towards the end of the year and we're looking forward to carrying it into 2020. Recently, we launched what I think are our coolest new avatar items yet (https://devrant.com/rants/2322869/...) and behind the scenes we got our iOS/Android apps on the latest version of the frameworks we use, which will help us continue to improve stability. Still, we definitely would have liked to do more, but we're optimistic the coming year will bring great things for devRant.
One thing we are very proud of is this year we had our best year ever in terms of platform stability and uptime. Despite the platform growing and our userbase growing, we had almost no complete app downtime even though our infrastructure is minimal. A large part of this is thanks to devRant++ supporters, who allow us to maintain a small but effective tier of infrastructure and redundancy.
In the coming year, we're going to launch one of our most ambitious initiatives yet, and we're also going to continue to improve the devRant experience itself. We want to try to gather more user feedback, so we'll be working on a way to do that too. Stay tuned, more on this stuff coming soon.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community! And thank you to our awesome devRant++ supporters for continuing to be the main drivers to keeping devRant up and running.
Looking forward to 2020,
- David and Tim28 -
I thought I was a hardcore geek until I came on here.
Super chill enviroment tho
Programmers are some of the nicest people you will meet.

Client: "Any update on the feature I have requested?"
Me: "Ah yes. I would love you give you an update. By the way, Happy n...."
Client: "Do you think the it can be released before midnight?"
I stopped replying. Fuck everyone and everything.
Happy New Year to everyone here.3 -
Company: Bobby you saved the company millions of dollars this year!!! Great job.
Me: So...how about that extra 2k per year raise.
Company: Um well it just doesn't seem to be in our budget this year.6 -
My resolution for this year is to stop hating javascript.
Error: cannot read property "year" from undefined.2 -
We recently signed a huge deal with a big, very known vendor. I asked if they had a web interface to the software. Of course, they said, and gave us a link. I clicked the link and was asked to install java. Turns out the web version is just the desktop version wrapped in a Java applet. The applet didn't do well with openjdk, so they asked me to file a support ticket. They gave me another link. The service desk required shockwave flash.6

I just had a major breakthrough on a project 😊
Just standing there chatting with my dad (also a dev), while preparing for the new years feast, and got this amazing idea that I just had to try. 30 minutes later I'm done with the script and it works flawlessly 😊😅5 -
For all those who hard coded 2017 in their code don't forget to update it 😋
PS. I actually know people who have6 -
That moment you leave the office for the last time in 2018.
FAWK YEAH!
What a year it’s been, from learning new platforms, to developing never ending changes, to breaking production at Christmas time, and finishing the year at the peak of purchasing period on a couple of websites with no reason to care what happens for several weeks all while absorbing extra projects from resigning co-workers.
*Turns on autopilot and walks the fuck out*
From one exhausted dev to the rest of you, enjoy the holiday break!3 -
Ending the year on 242!
It's not a big number but considering I've progressed from 10 contributions in 2017 to 242 in 2018, I'm happy!17 -
My new year resolution: 3840 X 2160
🐒
PS: don't give me a hard time in the comments. I know it's an old joke. 😫4 -
This community is by far the best thing I've discovered in 2016. Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to post this.
System.out.println("HAPPY NEW YEAR!");3 -
Happy new year fellow coders, developers, may your next deadline be reasonable. Have a productive night with less bugs and more coffee!1
-
Whether you hated 2017, 2018 will be better, promise.
Wish everyone a happy new year.
Best wishes,
cozyplanes
P.S.1. Thank you everyone for making me the part of devRant!
P.S.2. Thanks David and Tim!
P.S.3. If you need to work todayn and you don't think that it is the right thing to do, think of engineers working in a TV/radio broadcasting company. They should prepare the show! (Poor devs there)9 -
The Linux desktop marketshare. Every year support gets better and better and soon I think it will be higher than the Mac desktop marketshare.
-
When this year started I didn't have much knowledge of server side programming as web developer, only thing I knew was html/css. But this year I got started with:
- PHP
- Framework Phalcon (PHP)
- Javascript (jQuery, NodeJS, react)
- SASS (I can't without it anymore)
- Virtual Hosts (local development)
- Command Line stuff either in macOs and linux ubuntu
This is a huge deal for me because I always got laughed at I only wrote CSS and couldn't write anything else.
So knowledge-wise it was the most productive year ever.
Also, devRant helps me get through the day lately. Thank you for being a part of it!6 -
My new years dev resolutions are:
-Learn more c#
-Change jobs
-Read less reddit while on the clock

- rant more on DevRant
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE 🎇🎉11 -
So. My mobile bill is due 24/01/17 and yet it is supposedly "357 days overdue", but a previous one due on 24/11/16 has "295 days left to pay". Some funky handling of the new year going on here....

boombodies here. Just wanted to thank this community for being there over the last year. This place has been an absolute haven that has welcomed my frustrations with open arms. As much as I love to bitch, it has been an absolute privilege working in this profession. After spending my 20s in a completely different field host to a vastly different set of values, learning to dev and continuing to hone my skills finally feels like home. And by home, I mean like hearth-coaxed sweat dripping from the balls of a blacksmith and the cocoa at the cottage in the middle of nowhere patiently waiting for his return. I wish each and everyone of you a treacherous and catastrophically dreadful 2023…A burden in which you all bear successfully, and emerge greater and grander than ever.
Actually can you action that by EOD instead? I already promised it to the client.7 -
Peopleee of devRant!
It's been a year, I missed the date
I got to know lots of people, it has been an interesting year... certainly
Thanks anyways
To every ++er, to the people I now call my friends
I'm still a student at uni, still bad at stuff, still an embarrassing mess, it is best to not mind me hehe7 -
The most awaited death happens. The death of 2016!
My fellow devRanters, have a peaceful and a blessed new year. And if you are single, just like me, let our streak end this year! Haha! -
Its my morning rant time... Me and my team are working on implementing our solution into 20 year old piece of shit POS system which:
1. Uses old piece of shit computers - which is slower than average calculator.
2. Uses .Net 2.0 - and no higher versions could be installed.
3. Has 20 year old documentation - outdated as fuck.
4. Throws unknown and non explainable COMExceptions.
5. Works slow as fuck.
And we have to deal with all its issues as 3rd side integration.. FUCK... FUCK.. FUCK....8 -

I just sent two emails for an internship in two companies.
Hope they'll reply back.
I'll keep you updated on that5 -
Wishing all the developers out there a very happy and prosperous new year. May your code always compile on the first try and your age gets incremented without bugs.7

Your favourite comment?
My team was working on a legacy system, one part of it is an assistant, sadly required as global variables.
Being a non-english-first-language company, some dev years ago thought shortening said assistant to "ass" would be a wise idea - less to type, right?
When we redid the application 2016 part-by-part, our code needed to define 3-4 global variables starting with the "ass" prefix for the legacy parts to work. The colleague who was tasked with this is a fine gentleman from England.
Later as I read through the commit, I found 5 lines of code following 20 lines of comments explaining and deeply apologizing for "ass", "ass_open", etc.
The same dev also had a "HACK OF THE YEAR" comment he moved around when time constraints made a less-than-optimal fix necessary which was worse than the last "highscore".1 -
It's my first birthday!!!!

Working on my senior project tonight I went from "oh my god I'm so far behind I'm never going to get this done in time" to "I can't wait to show my advisor tomorrow because I've gotten so much done"
Feels good -
Best email of the year so far, from a "reputable" IT supplier.
I had asked for numerous copies of x86 and x64 copies of Windows 7.
Clarification email came back "I can't find an 84 bit copy of Windows. Can you clarify?"
Not sure that mail will be beaten this year. They weren't even looking for an 86 bit version.
Unfortunately I just had to explain rather than play along for a few hours as time limited.

WOOO THE NEW YEAR IS GOING SO WELL!
I just published my first pull request to someone else’s repository WOOOO5 -
Arrrrrry new year, you bloody pirates!
For those few of us still running fully static sites: remember to update the year constant, re-compile and upload.4 -
Looking back on my Christmas holidays while waiting for my train to come.
I wrote my last exam on the 22, took the train home on 23, spent Christmas and the 25 with my family, searched for a new apartment for 3 days, had two days left to do an assignment due to the 30, was packing till 3 in the morning today and will have my first day of work tomorrow. (Yeah, I spend new year's Eve home alone and completely sober...)
I wonder when I will have an entire meltdown and become some Joker level psychopath... Also happy new year everybody 😁6 -
Happy new year to the best community ever. May you have more ++ this year.
As promised, 2018 is the year i will TRY to post a rant a day. 😁😁😁 Wish me luck.1 -
#10 year challenge is basically data set father for new ai which will predict how X looks after 10 years

Fucking asshats, don't understand difference between people who do what..
Fucking asshat wants me to edit this image to his preference, I'd happily do it if I knew it how to...but noooooo he wants to convince me that I can do it without even knowing what or how to do...
That's like asking a plumber to fix my car...5 -
Started the year well :D
Making an app to view our home energy usage and output (solar panels).
Raspberry pi is connected to our energy meter and is used as a server.
But some of you may not like this...
The Pi is running Windows IOT :P2 -
This must be the most unforgettable Chinese New Year to me.
People are checking body temperature everywhere, and restricting traffic. All theaters, parks, any public places are shut down. People are told to stay home, which is what I have been doing in the past 2 weeks. Most of the time I was coding. It's kind of frustrating. I don't know how long this will last. Situation looks severe from the news.10 -
So which are you new year's resolutions?
Mine are:
Learn C,C++ and Node
Organize my time to do more with it
And code5 -
University wants a final year major project which should give an output as a research paper published in some conference or journal. All seems great. Department rejected all web app related projects because it's too generic.. Still makes sense..
And then suddenly, department asks where are customer requirements, where is ER diagram, where are Selenium tests??????
And they still expect a research paper to be published....
Why do they don't understand the difference between software development and research works.. !!!!!!1 -

Another year is ending, slowly, without much of a hassle.
Here's to all those performers who are still waiting for the phone to ring, to all those students who thought they would be earning by the year end. Here's to that father who couldn't get his dying child to have one meal with him. Here's to that daughter who could not inform her imprisoned father that she has made it to the final. Here's to that 70 year old man who is still waiting for his son to return from the dead, to that 12 year old child whose parents just split up, to that girl who thought winter would be unbearable. Here's to that silent lover who is yet to tell the girl that he exists, to that girl whose new year text to her crush failed to yield more than a blue tick. Here's to that couple who had their child, to that scientist whose data sets are turning out to be promising, to that scholar who made it to the last of the Interview rounds.
Here's to that cancer patient who went into remission.
Here's to that boy who got a Hi message from his crush, to that girl who is getting married.
Here's to all those promises and resolutions. Once again. The ones we couldn't keep, and the ones we kept. Here's to that promise that our GPA shall rise again, that all the incomplete MOOC courses will someday be done.
Here's to the beauty of fantastic beasts, Star Wars, sense8, Westworld and all the films and TV shows that made us happy.
Here's to life that goes on. Uninterrupted. Fearless. Still.
Happy New Year2 -
I started my actual gig as CTO of construction group (Innovation Hub) a year ago. And it was a hell of a ride, implementing kind of a scrum-ban for project management, XP, peer-reviews, a git-flow, git commit message formats, linters, unit testing, integration tests, etc...
And it's the fun part because with the CIO we had to drive the board to do A LOT of changes in their IT/Innovation drive.
But in one year there is a lot of KPI that went up :
* Deployment: When I arrived it took three stressful days to deploy a new version of one application, once a month. Today we do it every week, and it takes three annoying hours.
* We had no test. NOTHING! Today we have 85% code coverage for the unit test, and automatic integration tests run by our CI server every day.
* We had almost no documentation. Today our code is our documentation (it automatically extracted and versioned).
* We had 0 add value in the use of git. With commit messages as "dev", "asked task", inside jokes and a lot of "fix" and "changes". Today we have a useful git, and we even use it to create our deploy changelogs (and it's only mildly annoying!).
* More important, the team is happy! They get their purpose, see betterment in their tech mastery. They started doing conception, applicative architecture, presentations, having fun.
There is still a LOT of bad things we are still working on, and trying to solve (support workflow and betterment). But seeing what they already did, I'm so proud of my TEAM! I'm a fucking asshole, workaholic, "just do it" kind of guy. But they managed to achieve so much. Fucking PROUD!! -
hey everyone.
guess what - it’s my anniversary of first joining devRant. I joined exactly 0x16d days ago, and it’s been great.
ive learnt so much, made more stuff, and y’all are great.
id like to follow up on my resolutions from last year ( https://devrant.com/rants/364344/... ), and im proud to say i did everything except the 3d game (i was looking opengl and got distracted by opencl).
when i first saw devRant, i was on a plane, coming home. i saw a news article and decided to check it out, and when i joined i quickly realized i was the second youngest on the platform. one year, 316 rants, 2181 comments, and a score of 18594++ later, here i am.
thanks for this wonderful platform!20 -
1) Apply Vue.js to a real life project
2) Make a CMS for a private school (unluckily, they don't want a standard CMS)
3) Learning wisely of the mistakes I made this year with clients ("what if we added this?")1 -
Happy birthday to my self. Away from my family and friends, alone in the city alone in the office pushing keys on keyboard to deliver the project.
It's been very difficult year for me, both physically and mentally.
I hope next year will be better than this.
Fuck you 2019.
PS: birthday and end year selfish.12 -
Hi everyone.
I wish you all a 2017 full of code, of problems to fix, of oportunities to learn new languages and above all full of bugs to fix because from this, is from wherr we learn the most. -
There's one thing I hate about the new year. Everyone assumes it's the best time to do some cleanup, some maintenance. As the year starts fresh - everyone should start fresh, right?
NOT!
No, Hetzner, you don't need to restart my servers on Dec 26th.
No, local VPS providers, you don't need to clean-up all my /tmp/ files for me on Dec 29th, leaving me in the dark and unaware I have to restart my apps.
That's just a dick move. Your intentions might be alright, but the consequences... Damn you!3 -
For my employers: Just go fuck yourself with your greed. I'm gonna start my own business and fail till it succeeds.

My plan/resolutions for 2018?
Have at least 1 commit per day w/ maybe exceptions like special holidays and such 😁

New year's goals: actually release a fucking game and maybe finish my book!
Maybe 2018 will be the year I can finnaly call myself a released developer! -

What's your new year resolution(s) for 2018?
What do you like about devRant?
Which area do you think devRant can be improved?

Got myself this on new year. For all my data. Hope it's a good decision!
Happy New Year everyone ^_^ -
The feeling I had when my final year project idea hit me.
I am so excited and relieved.
It's hard to come up with project ideas this days, really!!! -
Same procedure as last year? Same procedure as every year for the last truly static website holdouts: change the year in the template, re-compile, upload.2

Here here to another year. So it's year end and I'd like to share an insight why I'm not happy.
> Left good job but the pay wasn't so good
> Lost girlfriend, I blame myself for this
> We were on the same project, so naturally my entire project is sabotaged
> She gave away my very first API which I built by myself
> Been unemployed 2 months and did nothing
> Got hired for react js and AngularJS but boss wants me to do java backend
> I DONT EVEN KNOW JAVA, IT ISNT ON MY RESUME
> And I might not get gold 🏅 medal for the academics
2 years from now I'll switch from industry to academics, I want to shape young minds properly1 -
So Earth just completed another revolution around the Sun and people going craaaazy all over the internet. Like calm down bruh :v3

Happy new year from Shibuya!
Fucking antifa communists came and ruined it right after new year though..6 -
Happy new year everyone.
For everyone yet to catch up to midnight, let this be a pre-new year post!4 -
Panic. 😟
I received two emails today inviting me for video call interviews at two companies I applied to.
I am supposed to select a date for this week or next week, but our office resumes work on Monday, the 7th.
I only have tomorrow and the day after (3rd and 4th) left for this week. I need time to prepare, so I am thinking of booking one for 4th and one for next week.
BUT
I am trying not to start the year by skipping work. I already skipped work in December because of a brief illness (lol).
I am thinking, if I go to work on that day, I might get summoned into a meeting and miss my interview. So, I have concluded that I will have to skip work on that day, but now I can't think of excuses.
Ideas? 🤔12 -
It's over.
I've been working on you for months, and thinking about you for near a year.
I built you with a shitty language first and some crappy ideas. I obviously got bad results, but I didn't lose courage and I continued you.
Got near the obsession to improve you. Every time. Switched to a fast but hard language. Got into my first low-level fuss. All for you.
Now I reached the end with no more improvements and tweaks I could imagine, I can tell that:
I had a lot of expectations from you.
But turns out you were nothing more than a nasty brain fart pretending to be a good idea.
The core of the concept was rotten. Blinded by my lust for success (perhaps cupidity ?) I didn't see you just couldn't work.
I'm utterly disgusted, of course. Who wouldn't, after working so hard on something that looks right but is completely useless ?
But even though this was all in vain, you taught me some great lessons down the road.
Efficiency matters over facility.
Get sure you're using the right tools, and stay open for changes of such.
But some others were harsher, though just as important.
There's times you just have to admit defeat.
Putting a lot of efforts into something doesn't always bring a reward.
If after a long time you can't get the thing right, then stop. Your time is precious. Don't waste your time or time will waste you (Thanks Muse, I love this sentence).
And the most important: next time I got some "grand" idea that is not about improving some random software, I'll bang my head to my desk enough times to forget about it.
So now the time has come.
Goodbye, project "hpym". You put me in grief, but I know I matured a lot in my concepts of development because of you.
Now take place into the project graveyard among the other clunky half-assed shit I got rid off.6 -
A global pandemic - it's the time of the year when you can legally enter Bank premises wearing a mask w/o drawing any attention.

Happy new year from Denmark.

Wish you devRant family a very happy new year, my new year resolution for the year finally start working on my side project which I have been rolling off for the last 2 years, this is the year I finally start and finish it off.

Also: it's been a whole year since then? Where did the time go? -
Oh boy this year. We lost net neutrality. We spent a whole year without princess leia. I lost my job and spent 7 month finding a replacement. I got engaged. And i can safely say the only good things i have seen this year where things i did for myself and others.

Happy new year everyone!

Tomorrow, I'll start my last year of study at a web development school.
At the end of it I'll get a title that'll allow me to get recognition around the world, but the school doesn't end until 9th September 2018, so in roughly in a year.
I'm honestly shitting my pants, wish me luck 😅2 -
Uuugh the 3rd of January first working day in my country, I am dreading 2018 already with the backlog of issues I decided not to fix in 2017 as if they'd magically disappear. Hello darkness my old friend...

Last December I discovered the Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times", and my new year's wish was that there be interesting times. This year I wish there be mundane times.2

It's not a new year unless you spend your first day back firefighting shit that broke over the holidays 🙃
-
Heard someone say they don't celebrate their birthday nor new years the traditional way. It made me curious, i asked and she said.
"I am born once physically, that is my birthday. Every year there after is my new year and that is when i celebrate my new year or existence"
Very interesting and i can respect that :) soo mamy people with beautiful minds.3 -
T-Minus 2hrs 15 mins before I can get the fuck out of dodge until 2018, it's shaping up to be a shit of a January. Genuinely contemplating leaving the software industry and becoming a butcher instead.
Kma 2017 you're a year I'd rather forget3 -
As the year comes to a close and I begin my challenge, what are some tips that you guys recommend I do?3

Guy told me Java Swing is more stable and has more effective look than JavaFx. Okay mate, I'm sure. 😒

Happy holidays, everyone. How is the weekend going?

I learnt Swift in 2016. 2017 has to be the year I turn Swift pro.
Happy new year to all and may your code come to life and thrive. -
New Year's day 10am I got a text message from the product owner.
To wish me a happy new year one would guess. But no! She was telling me that the cron job that I developed 2 years ago failed and I need to apply the change on the configuration manually.
What really irritated me was that was no matter of life and death, this could wait for us to get back at the office. Or even worse, she could have done the change herself, after all she was checking emails anyway.
What a b.2 -
I'm torn apart by the upcoming new year. I can't wait forbthis horrible yearbto end, hoping the next will be better. But I'm afraid this year might be just an intro into what's coming.
Trying to stay positive. Let's hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.5 -
The very last weekend of the year has arrived.
How has the year gone so far? Any significant memories that you want to share?
Maybe share a new year resolution as well.

Last working day for this year. My boss just told me, our customers shipped 80m nzd worthy fruits this year. Thanks guys 👍

Anyone else celebrating new years alone at home? My "friends" are having a party somewhere but didn't invite me cause why would they? 🤷♂️
Anyway, happy new year. Hope you're having a better time than I have.1 -
How do you deal with relatively complex Boolean logic requirements?
Here's a simple example, of which I missed 50% of the cases because it was non-intuitive to me:
A year is a leap year if:
- it is divisible by 4
- except it is also divisible by 100
- unless it is also divisible by 400
To my intuition, the logic tree is as follows:
if (year % 4 == 0) -> true
if (year % 100 == 0) -> false
if (year % 400 == 0) -> true
so I ended up with 3 cases and I initially missed all the others until I started coding.
The full solution is:
if(year % 4 === 0) {
if(year % 100 === 0) {
if(year % 400 === 0) {
true
} else {
false
}
false
} else {
true
}
true
} else {
false
}
}
I don't like it when I don't immediately see all logic paths.19 -

No better way to start off a new year than to wake up to message from the boss telling you that you need to start to work even harder because there are projects overdue and clients has started charging penalties.
Of course he doesn't care that there are only two of us (me, a Junior Android Dev and he iOS Dev) and there are 3 projects, all with deadlines in December 2017 or January 2018.1 -
Silver spooned europeans get to spend new year's eve partying and getting drunk not having to worry about a damn thing since their government has got them covered with the first of January being a public holiday.
No currency devaluation, no slave labour, no care in the world.

Heya! I've created something in C# you might find useful (though it's simplistic, and not my idea).
It's a program which has a progress bar for the current year, one for the current month, for the day, hour, and minute. Here it is, if you want to try it: https://dropbox.com/s/...
Based off the Mac version (not made by me): https://twitter.com/year_progress/...
Which costs $5, by the way... While I uploaded it for free u.u
What do you think?
Also, there might be an easter egg for 2019 ;D
Happy new year, everyone! 💙2 -
I was just preparing my resume, since the old one was too immature . Realised that i couldnt put anything of note..that wasnt immature..
A complete year wasted on nothing.. -
If only there was a way for the peeps who listed 'new job for 2018' to congregate and motivate each other 🙋4

I just knew about netlify
I paid so much less (10$ first year and 15$ second year) instead of 45$/year with OVH for a domain.
Is there any cons with Netifly ?14 -
I have 3 goals this year.
Move out
Maintain at least 1 new long term friendship
Be more responsible
I have way more smaller things I want to do but these are the end goals. Each entail their own struggles but I know I can do it.
Keep me responsible fam -
Isn't it weird that some parts of the world have crossed over to the next decade and some haven't. (If you consider 2020 the start of a new decade).
Anyways cheers to the end a year and the beginnings of a new one. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year4 -
I wish I have a better academic year with great professors and wonderful coursework so I don't have to rant as much,
But then, I'm starting to like DevRant. So cross that out. I hope for a more challenging year while still being manageable, and very very INTERESTING.
Happy new year, people. -
What did you guys do for your final year projects in college? If you did cs that is. And how well did you do?3

Woohoo Final year project managed to get it approved!!!!(Its a game...those are generally not approved in my University)

Happy Christmas and happy new years. 2018 was not a good year for me. Many project got delayed and not happy with my performance. I wanted to learn many thing and do many things but was not able to achieve those things.
I don't even feel like enjoying my birthday anymore. (It's on 27).
Let's hope the 2019 will be better than this dumpster fuck 2018. -
I went to an interview a few days ago, just out of curiousity, even though i was sure that i won't be getting any "android developer jobs" there . it was a mega job fair. in one company, me and my friend neil(fake name) went. the interviewer guy was willing to give neil a package upto 10LPA (its a great offer for freshers in my country) based on his current skills of php js, react, angular, ... web stuff .
I had this assumption( and neil did too , we both kind off had the same mindset) that a company teaches us things, we just have to be a little famous/accomplished. So i thought why not? i am accomplished. i got 2 apps on playstore, i am an AAD certified Android dev and know a lot of android stuff, i am quite famous. i am equally as deserving as neil.
But what happenned was something different. When my turn came, the interviewer said " If you have no knowledge of phy/js/node/angular, why are you sitting here?" to which i said " i presumed company would teach me, since i bring some level of expertise from other fields"
so he told me some hard truths **"Companies are fast paced. they don't have time to train you in everything. we seek for candidates having some level of knowledge in the domain, so that we could brush up your skills, increase your knowledge to current requirement and push you to production engineer asap, so that you could be worthy of your salary"**
This is completely correct. i have stuck myself in such a career that its very difficult to sell myself for other job profiles. And from what i have seen, companies seek a very high level of proficiency in this field and rarely recruit freshers( or even if they do, salaries will be aweful)
. Now i am so unsure about what to do next:
A.) keep learning more and more of android and look for job in it. And even if am getting an aweful job offer, just sulk and take it
B.) do open source work/gsoc work?( its a good way to earn more recognition/stipend/knowledge and sometimes even job offers)
C.) learn web dev, data sciences, blockchain, cloud or other stuff that i don't yet know
D.) go back to ds algo / competitive? (because having good competitive knowledge is a safe zone. you are assumed as apure fresher with 0 level of practical knowledge but good level of mathemetics)
I know i am going suck in all of the above except maybe (A) or (B) because (C) is something that am unsure would grab my interest (and even if it did, i am sure i need another 1-2 years to be somewhat good at it) and (D) is something i myself know am uncapable of , i am an average shit in maths(but might mug it all up if i pull all nighters for 1 year)2 -
Entering 2021 strong with more knowledge and more experience 💙💪
2020 was a year of learning.
It taught us the value of time, to believe in ourselves, to make the best use of what we have, not take anything for granted and always keep learning.
Only then we can overcome our biggest fears

Okay, so I was wondering if there are any dutch people here who work with C#. I'm in my last year and need to do one final internship but I'm having trouble finding one since I don't care much about web dev. I prefer developing apps and games which is why I went for a course in app dev but the only thing we've been doing is developing shitty websites and I've lost interest in it.
In my last internship I was working on a serious game which recruiters used for the pre selection of people who applied for a job. That was written in C# in unity and was definitely interesting to say the least.
So my question is if any of you have any ideas on where to take my last internship?23 -
2018 has been a year full of lessons.
thank you, next!
happy new year folks, have a happy year ahead!!!1 -
Went to bed at 23:40, slept at ~23:50 - goal accomplished
Woke up, asked that little spying bastard besides me (echo dot) about the time. Understood sth. in the neighbourhood of 0:30.
Booted the phone, realized I've slept a bit more.. It's 2:30.
By now it's 6:32 (CET) I havn't done anything productive but to get out of bed and get some food.
Let's see if my head will produce some working code.2 -
Year 2020:
It's full of possibilities and no idiots have tried to hinder my progress during this year. -
Friend: You have only a year before the next MS batch starts. Start doing something. A year will go by in no time.
Me: Wrong. A year will go by in exactly a year 😎 -
Happy new year guys and gal. Been a great year and hope next year would be bring good luck and prosperity to all dev rant community here.

Well guys we made it, its finaly 01-13-17. (For our non metric fellas 13-01-17 ) how do we call this new month?1
-
Ok ok ok. I see y'all have nice plans for the new year. Some of you even made a list that will be barely completed or remain unchecked.
Let me tell you my real issues/plans for 2020.
- First things first, I have to update the documentation of the projects that I maintain. Especially the copyright information. (2019 -> 2020)
- I have to check if any of the old software that I use is broken because of the year/date bugs. (you know, that happens)
- And finally I should check my Windows PC. If it's still OK than it means that no malware/virus is activated with a year payload. (it happens too, watch @danooct1 on YT)
Hope it helps someone.1 -
Haven't updated my app since early November. Think it's about time to implement the feature I've been wanting to implement since the beginning of December, but for now I think I'm just going to enjoy the rest of my vacation in Italy.
Raising a glass to all of you here on devRant! Hope you all have a happy New year!
🥂 -
New year resolutions that we make every year but aren't they meant to be broken?
What new year resolutions did you make or break?3 -
Knew it was a bad idea to work on my project over the break, and I am stuck for a day and have to spend the new year celebration being stuck.
-
I am taking too long to think for final year cs project.
Thinking of autonomous mapping and exploration using UAVs
Any suggestions?2 -
I think the notification about downloading pictures from devRant is useless. It isn't something amazing at 2017.2

Has anyone taken a gap for 6 months or more? Where are you from? What age did you take it? Why did you take it? How did it go? How difficult was it to find a job after?
I am 25 from India. Due to stress and neglect, my health has been constantly deteriorating and at this point I am really running out of options. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.6 -
So this my final year as an IT student, and I need to make a desktop app for the college which is about monitoring and diagnosing network flow and connected hardware, the question is: is there any stuff that can help and will it be better to use a specific language ?3
-
2019. I found a guy, CTO of our client. 50+ age. He teaches a lot to us. In development, I enjoy this year, because this year has more learning then last year.
I start work on 3 more languages, see more possiblities in IT, Avionics Softwares, Aviation systems.
This year, I also learn a lot about data center power distribution.
So this year was full of learning and new things in development and IT.2 -
Happy New Year
Just hoping that all devs come up with something fascinating this year. And this includes me. -
Happy new year! Happy new year!.....and so onn.
