CEO "If you make costs to build a home office for covid, please be aware that you can fully declare your bills, and you'll retain ownership over the ordered goods. Please all buy some good desk chairs and keyboards, so you can work ergonomically"
6 months later, CFO: "Bittersweet, why did you try to declare €35000? What are these invoices even? Concrete rebar?"
Me: "CEO told us to build a home office. I got permits from the town to dig a souterrain layer under my house. This is just for the foundation, the bills for drainage pumps, sheetpiling, geothermal heat exchangers, insulation, flooring, electricity and of course desk & chair will follow later"
(To be fair, I really did make those costs, but was just trolling by uploading all the material bills)16
PROBLEM: A tickets' company came to us last autumn. They said they have severe performance problems and asked us to help.
SOLUTION: covid and quarantines. All events have been ceased, noone's buying any tickets any more. Performance problems are no more. FIXED.
PROBLEM: Another company came to us recently. They said they have severe performance problems with their huge databases and asked us to help.
SOLUTION: a few days of heavy rain and their datacenter was flooded. along with the backup servers. No more data, no more performance problems with large databases. FIXED
Solving problems genie style!
Never worked for this guy, just saw it someone else's feed and thought it would be appropriate here. This is not leadership. This is bullying and stomping on people in a vulnerable situation which most likely has very little to do with their work ethic and more to do with company health. Yea, definitely elevate yourself and be that A+ person for you. Not for assholes like this. A good leader would empathize and provide resources for advancement and transformation to roles that are more aligned to the current environment.25
I was interviewing this guy who's been a dev for 12 years. Apparently got laid off in his small town company because of covid.
So I asked him to write an algorithm that loops through a list and returns the largest number.
Not only could he not do that after trying for 15 minutes, but he also spent an entire minute ranting about how algorithmic questions were dumb and unnecessary in this day and age and you can google these things without having them memorized anyway.
The point of an algorithmic question in an interview is not to see if you can memorize the fucking thing. It's to see if you're methodical enough to reason through what you don't know and arrive at a decent solution all the same.
Just got laid off from full-time salaried position due to various business circumstances. I absolutely loved working there because they paid well, are low demand, they were 100% remote before it was COVID cool, and they didn’t micromanage anyone. Will continue to work for same employer but on hourly work order basis. I’m fighting the “provider” urge to find something else full-time as quickly as possible. My wife, who’s also working part time, says I shouldn’t be in a hurry and take my time to find just the type of job I really want. She’ll even go full-time while I search.
I’m the luckiest unlucky guy.13
Many times I struggled to find the right words to ask people to fuck off. Now I remind them of social distancing.4
How to run a successful business:
1. Fire 30% of staff because covid, 'we can't afford you'
2. Be wrong about covid and have higher sales volume than ever
3. Be unable to handle such traffic with limited resources
4. Move EVERYONE, every fucking specialist, every non-people person to customer support and make them refund ALL disputed orders like robots because customers aren't happy
We got an HTC Vive from my girlfriend’s brother two weeks ago. We’ve been enjoying it, playing games, looking at places to move, using it as a virtual vacation (since we haven’t left the house in months thanks to covid and sweltering heat), etc. It’s been amazing.
Today, my 1yo decided it would be great fun to wrap its cord in the exercise bike and spin the pedals (and therefore flywheel) as fast as he could. It ripped the headset band off, broke the plastic attachment, and tore the cables out. He also broke the pedal somehow.
So no more Vive.
We can probably get it fixed, but.
My heart hurts.11
Is it just me sleeping 10+ hours in this covid times and still having problems getting out of bed and concentrating? 🤔29
We are devs right?
We have cpus and gpus lying around right?
We are still alive... right? 🤔
How about we do our part and utilise our PCs for helping with COVID-19 research.
I've stumbled across this little tool that not only keeps me warm at night but helps researchers with several diseases.
It's like a a bitcoin miner but for research purposes, no it's not a dodgy bitcoin miner.
Oh and feel free to keep yourself anonymous as there are stats that will identify your username - when they work.
There are installers for windows, Mac, and linux distros so everyone can get involved.32
I have been told that post lockdown, I must commute hours each day to the office in London. This really makes sense, considering that my reports are not in London, but based in India. The product owner is in India. My line manager and his manager are in the USA. There's no one in London I work with.12
Hm...I would except since COVID started, moved back to my parents, so use my dad's laptop for work... He uses it on weekends.6
A web developer has started working on my windows.
How should I communicate with it that I don't want a website outside my windows? Will this be considered a covid layoff if I just throw it off the said window? 🤔
P. S. I'm talking about a spider, icymi.15
My company went remote since the outbreak, surprisingly, more work was getting done, so we are completely remote.3
So i got a message on a job platform today from a recruiter. So far nothing unusual. But what he wrote was really disgusting. It was basically something like this:
"Since many engineers now lose their jobs in the covid-19 crises, rest assured that we are still hiring! I work for a large company blablablabla..."
So he tries to play with your fear of losing your job in the coming depression. It's also quite possible, that he will also try to negotiate a shit salary for you. Since at least you have safe job now, right?
Fucking disgusting pig.2
I used to get gigs from a freelancing website. Some guy posted a project where he wanted a website with complementary Android and iOS apps for $50. My bid was "Sir, would you like fries with that?". It was uncalled for I guess but after seeing so many projects like this, I was pissed to no end.
2 months later I get an email from the website saying I received an infraction due to my behaviour. Wtf is an infraction? Fuck you and fuck the English dictionary! Or pay me fucking 50 dollars to find out what it means!
Basically, I shat where I used to eat. Fuck my life.5
"During this crisis, we all need to stand together. We're contributing by providing 50% off domain registrations"
"Important COVID-19 update: Social distancing is a must. Free shipping on all dildos and vibrators"
Pandemic-themed marketing emails... 😩5
Worst: I lost development contract - probably due to covid - after 4 years of work. I got email when I was at bank seconds before signing mortgage for my first apartment.
I signed it anyways as a technically unemployed person without income looking at the world collapsing.
Best: I gained new contract with 40% money raise. Fuck yeah !
So a couple months ago we gave up on cloud hosting and switched to bare metal. Aside from the hardware we have in colo at a local datacenter we also kept 4 racks off prod at the office. Then everyone stopped going to the office due to this covid circus, except for a couple “sysadmins” who would take shifts monitoring stuff, making sure everything works fine so all those people working remote could do their jobs properly.
Now a couple weeks ago some weird shit started happening, like some service would stop for like a minute at 4am and I’d get a quick alert, and other random crap, no logs or anything, really strange.
Turns out one of the guys (made in india, rather fresh import) was stealing hardware. He would stop a machine, pull out some ram sticks or a cpu or a couple ssds the put it back on in a minute.
So far about $8k worth of shit is missing and that’s what I could figure out remotely.
Tomorrow between their shifts I have to go there and run a check on all the hardware and figure out what to do next.
The IP he might have taken with the drives is worth somewhere in the mid 8 figures.
The guy has paperwork so he can’t exactly get kneecapped or fall from the 12th floor by accident.
Dude on remote meeting: -cough- -cough- I don't really feel that bad, I'm pretty sure i'm not contagious. I might come in.
Don't be that guy people (even outside of the COVID timeline...).
Fortunately he didn't come in so no harm no foul.1
Sitting in a vaccination centre waiting for my Covid vaccine.
Not looking forward to it, I hate injections!!!15
Fuck this shit.
I got tested positive this morning.
I might have accidentally infected my parents and my colleagues.23
covid is making life hard again. I can't just stop in the middle of a research project because I can't access the robots anymore. *makes angry noises* I already canceled a human study because of covid, so this feels super unfair.
but you know what pisses me off even more? the govt complaining about numbers being high but not doing jackshit about active disinfection of air and public spaces (China did that, btw) or providing cheap disposable masks for people.
Also, I'm not as much afraid of getting covid as I am afraid of giving it to the head of the department who is a 70+ yrs old genius in his own right.
... This is shit.40
>Loose job just before Covid started its crap
>About to get new job
>"We'll be in contact after the lock down"
>Months later, country starts open up little
>Starting to look more proactively again
>Company from before "no positions atm"
>Really liked that place, so Fuuuuuuu.jpeg again
>Talking to recruiter, they have something in mind
> Need assessment. Understandable
>They send a separate assessment for every single language on my CV and the cake thief thing
I'm gonna fail my now-online uni course. I'm not understanding jackshit.
Fuck this covid bullshit.
Thank you for listening.17
A shoutout to all the cool guys and gals who are not afraid of covid-19 and see no reason to be careful or take all (any) the safety measures available...
A shoutout to all the cool kids who claim to believe that this is "just a flu".
Feast your eyes on this comparison. We have that low deaths rate (so far) ONLY because we are taking this shit seriously and we take all the precautions we can. Now imagine if the Infected numbers were as high as the Spanish flu -- 33% of the population? Numbers start to get real scarry when you start making conversions to absolute values. considering mortality rates this "just a flu" is the most lethal of all the major flu pandemics since late 19th century (according to this ref.)
Guys, gals, non-binaries, stay safe. Care for yourselves and peeps around you.
“Dear Manager, the reason I didn’t complete my sprint task today was that while I was nursing my fiancé’s COVID vaccine severe side effects, said fiancé’s Chinese roommate put a jar of some fermented product called “Golden Smell” in a precarious place from which I broke it, causing a veritable golden shower of glass shards and odors to permeate the workspace. If you don’t hear from me by standup, tell my mom i’m sorry."5
Quarantine, WFH and sleep combo is really not working out for me.
I'm unable to sleep. Therefore I'm wide awake at 4AM, but will sleep for 12 hours when I eventually manage to fall sleep. But then, I have meetings tomorrow and won't be able to sleep all day.
Overall, fuck covid.
Thank you for listening.8
I’m dealing with the worst client I’ve ever had. The project has gone on for way longer than it should, mainly because of them adding a tonne of features to the scope. I should have told them to fuck off but I felt sorry for them because COVID was hitting them hard. So I put in a lot of extra unpaid work to try and get them through it and now they repay me by asking for a refund because they’re now broke?
They blame me for their now being broke when it’s clear they’re broke because of COVID absolutely decimating the restaurant industry. They say that because it took so long to add all those extra unlaid features it’s now my fault?
All this just as I’ve finished the app and am going through the process of releasing it to the stores. I’m probably going to have to take them to court to even get my pay out of them... Thats if they even have money to pay now.
I’ve spent all year trying to get this app out the door only for them to turn around and start abusing me on the phone when things start going down hill for them.
This whole project has been a complete waste of time when I could have been focusing on clients that don’t treat me like shit.4
Germany trying to fight Covid with digital tools (at least not another app today): registered for a test with QR-Code, Webform and E-Mail. After being tested by friendly people, I received an email that contains a link to a download of a PDF document.
Inside the PDF, a QR code, and a bureaucratic text like during the time of the Prussian emperor: "Bescheinigung über das Vorliegen eines positiven oder negativen Tests (Antigen Schnelltest) zum Nachweis des SARS-CoV-2 Virus".
Okay, we have a national "Corona Warn App" using Google's bluetooth based distancing detection, that also allows to add a test by scanning a QR code.
Scanned the code, got
"QR code is invalid".
Despite the unfriendly UX writing and the unhelpful description, another proof of the state of digitalization in Germany in 2021.
I am not even surprised.
At least my test result is negative.12
I'm very dependent on my sense of smell. I always smell whatever I eat or drink. Because of some stuff about my brain that my doctor told me and I forgot, this sense is very precise.
It's so precise in fact that in a closed room I can tell whether a woman is on her period or not. But we're blessed and we're also cursed – put any kind of paint, nail polish, rotten food, so-called "car perfume" near me and I have a headache until I get a full night of sleep.
Coronavirus however fucked up that feeling. When it initially disappeared I was panicking because I felt like a cat with his whiskers cut off. Now it's back and it's strong as usual, but it's different.
Now I can't eat chicken. No matter if it's fresh or not, if I smell chicken my brain just fucking nopes out and tries to vomit.
Corona sucks. Stay safe.43
In another news. COVID-19 continues to ravage certain places of the world. Most notably India (for right now)
Is there a mathematical correlation between this and the decrease of scam calls asking about your social, vehicle warranties, IRS frauds etc?
A friend mentioned that he has not gotten scam calls in a while now, I noticed this as well. I would normally have vendors contact me daily, vendors with shitty practices and poor sounding accents that insist on them having names such as "Joe" or "Steve". This sucks for India since I believe it is a country with absolutely beautiful cultural heritage and good people. But man, the decrease in scam calls from there is outstanding now.8
Company President: No one needs to worry about losing their job due to COVID. We’re an essential business and won’t be effected.
48 hours later
IT Director: There have been severe budget cuts and we are letting go of the two highest salaried employees from every department. You are no longer employed.2
Both kids and my wife are home today.
Up until COVID working at home was great.
Today I work in the Palace of Pandemonium.8
So, I applied to this hosting company years ago. Took an online test and scored like 17% They let me try it again and I score like 30% This guy in Serbia I didn't even know at time convinces company to hire me.
I learn everything wicked fast and become a pretty good admin. Become really good friends with Serbian guy.
Fast forward 2 years I resign from company, company is pissed idk why but big falling out, lawsuits threatened.
I take vacation to Serbia and have great time meeting my friend and actually helping him with his work at said company.
To this day we are great friends and when Covid is over will be back in Belgrade.1
I HATE IT WHEN I HAVE TO BE NICE TO THESE KINDA FCKED UP IGNORANT PEOPLE
[11:10, 16/04/2020] +263 73 ...: Hi I want to develop an app do you live in glen view
[11:12, 16/04/2020] Softaz: Um in budiriro
[11:12, 16/04/2020] Softaz: What do yu have in mind
[11:15, 16/04/2020] +263 73 ....: There's an idea I've been testing and its about creating an app thats track patients with the covid virus the people they have infected even before the infected ones test positive
[11:16, 16/04/2020] +263 73 4....: What do you think about this coz this is not a money generating project but we will do it for humanity
[11:17, 16/04/2020] +263 73 4...: We will finish the project in less than 3 days coz I've got the research covered and how the app will operate I jus need someone who can punch the code
[11:22, 16/04/2020] Softaz: Its a good idea
Though your time frame is too tight
What platform will this app run on?
[11:26, 16/04/2020] +263 73 47...: About the time frame its becoz its a very simple mechanism4
Non tech coworkers before COVID-19: you don't need home office, it's only a way to avoid job responsibilities
Non tech coworkers today: yeah home office is a great idea, why we didn't think about it before2
I ran out of milk, so used a five second squirt of ‘cream’ for my coffee this morning. That’s ok right, normal behaviour? All this COVID-isolation isn’t getting to me..? 😆21
Another rant about my school: the default password system.
Each student's username is FirstnameLastname, and the same applies to teachers. The passwords assigned are <First initial><Last initial> for students, and the same for teachers with "teacher" appended to the end. As students, we figured out this system pretty quickly, and we were able to log into the computer system as any teacher who we knew had requested an account. (Teacher accounts had unfiltered Internet access, student accounts did not).
I now teach in this school, where they recently got Google Classrooms accounts for each teacher during Covid. The accounts use the same naming/password scheme! I somehow doubt the teachers replace their passwords, so any student clever enough to figure out the system can log into their Google for Education account.1
Not really a rant, but here goes...
I want to personally thank each and every member of devRant! Here’s why. (First, a little boring backstory): I’m visually impaired, and stuck in quarantine like the rest of us. (Not totally blind, but y’all definitely DO NOT want me out on the roads driving,) I also work a Tech Support job which largely deals with macOS. Due to this eye condition, there simply isn’t a lot of shit to do while stuck in the house other than work and learn node.js. So my pastime has largely been to sit and read Facebook while not on the clock. One day, while working from home, I was so bored and pissed off, I googled “macOS fucking sucks” for fun, and found devRant! Your stories, jokes and rants have turned my life around! I’m no longer on Facebook. (I know, I know, but what’s a half-blind guy to do except read about COVID-19 and get more pissed off at the state of the world?) and you guys have inspired me to start learning new things and delve deeper into node, which I had put down for awhile (I’m at a kindergarten level anyway, brand new). Anyway, thanks again! I’ll refrain from asking stupid questions, I promise. But I need a TechSupportRant now...6
Senior management just had a covid opening up party, streamed it on YouTube in the middle of the office with not a single person wearing a mask or social distancing. Encouraging employees to come back to working in the offices.
I AM FUCKING DONE. IM DONE.
It hasn't been a week since one of our employees died and these were the same people who emailed the team asking to donate towards the bereaved family.
This isn't even a rant. It baffles me that narcissistic bullshit like this is legal. How can anyone be that fucking stupid? Just how. Explain this shit to me. Because these aren't total assholes. They're generally nice people outside of work. Why is it that anything touched by corporate greed gets corrupted to the point of inhumanity.
24th, Christmas: BIND slaves decide to suddenly stop accepting zone transfers from the master. Half a day of raging and I still couldn't figure out why. dig axfr works fine, but the slaves refuse a zone update according to tcpdump logs.
25th, 2nd day: A server decides to go down and take half my network with it. Turns out that a Python script managed to crash the goddamn kernel.
Thank you very much technology for making the Christmas days just a little bit better ❤️
At least I didn't have anything to do during either days, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And to be fair, I did manage to make a Telegram bot with fancy webhooks and whatnot in 5MB of memory and 18MB of storage. Maybe I should just write the whole thing and make another sacred temple where shitty code gets beaten the fuck out of the system. Terry must've been onto something...5
Finished my internship today, turns out I won't be getting hired because upper management is cutting back due to COVID.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck, compared to the horror stories I've read here, it was beautiful. The work experience was super worth it though, despite the intern pay. Time to start looking for a real job I guess.2
Everyone is remote working and executives keep telling non-technical to push their communications into shared channels in Microsoft Teams.
It forces analysts and managers to ask questions plainly. They are getting developer input quickly so aren’t wasting time on in-person meetings. The higher ups see how little many produce. Developers are busy churning out software as usual and responding to technical questions.
Our CEO said something in a channel that suggested he is considering downsizing the management and adding more developers. 😱 The response was that analysts and managers packed the developer schedules with online meetings and are trying to initiate more documentation work.4
When the 14th largest school district in the country sends a text message to all parents with link about their new COVID-19 policies, you'd think they'd scale up their web server count before pressing send. I guess I'll just read it tonight.9
So according to Pfizer, ~39,000 people received a second dose of vaccine/placebo. So about 20,000 got the placebo, and out of that group only 85 got infected in the span of 3.5 months, during the second wave. That's 0.425%.
So they either:
* Proved Covid is not infectious
* Manipulated the shit out of their data
How that fuck is this considered valid analysis?!
If I tried to publish a paper based on such unreliable, statistically meaningless data, I would be rejected without a blink.64
I just clocked off work and end up going to my couch we're I shall spend the next week in a fucking nother COVID lockdown.
Ooh no curfew this time 🥳
How's your week going?15
Out of shower, I sit on bed staring at my phone cuz I don't know who to talk to. This is the shittiest stage of the lockdown. When you've bore your close friends, exhausted your "I'm gonna find new friends online" options, and now you're -I am- circling back to remind yourself of all the people who put you aside. Just making yourself sadder remembering how each one of them shared a lot of their life and feelings with you and then how easily they went like "Nope. Don't want to deal with you". Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's everyone. Every friendship has a proper "distance" but I just don't know why some people are like asteroids. Or rather, their interests are. They come quick and crash your mental barriers and tell you everything there is to know about them but then something shinier catches their attention or they realize they actually won't be able to have you -me- as a sidepiece and then they just... Fuck off.
And I don't know, maybe they think I'll remember them as the one that got away, but sadly, they just become "another one" in a list that I can't remember past the last 5-6 of.
Anyways, I miss the days when I could sit next to a friend, or hug a friend, or just looking into someone's eyes from less than safe distant and seeing how the details of their face change as they speak, and how their emotions flow.
I'm tired of all the zoom and vc and...
I'm just tired. 😢9
So as millions of americans file for unemployment the state of New Jersey is beging for help from COBOL programmers to keep their 40+ year old unemployment systems running. Who knows COBOL here?
Work from Home was not the cup of tea for most of us before Covid-19. 😱
Some really love working in the comfort of their home like your oh-so-lovely HR and some are scratching their heads like your beloved Project Managers.😂
The Designer is loving his space. 😍
Tester is enjoying some good naps in between the working hours. 😴
and... What do you think programmers would be doing? 🧐
Well.. well.. well.. Programmers don't really feel any change. Coding then and Coding now. 😎
How's your Work From Home Going?6
The moment the first news article was published in my country about covid cases decreasing (it isn't actually decreasing btw), these motherfucking sweatshops just swarm in like a pack of fucking hyenas to open up and get their employees killed again.
What the fuck is up with this sweatshop bullshit attitude of "Devs won't work unless I micromanage them in person" you twats? My productivity has literally doubled the entire time I was at home.
And this sickening, narcissistic email about how we're supposed to enthusiastically go for work and meet our friends and increase productivity, yay, jesus fucking christ, my apartment has two ongoing cases. Try living in the real world some times you HR troglodytes.
I've been healthy since spring. I follow all precautions. Now I've been diagnosed with covid, at Christmas and I feel like shit. I hope I don't lose my taste.
Realy, fuck me...8
I’ve only just been able to catch up with the UK news and the government missed ~16,000 cases of COVID-19 over a 7 day period due to a “technical glitch”.
The “technical glitch” was the government using an excel spreadsheet that reached the data limit.
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea long term, that’s why databases exist!!!!10
I'm a dumbass.
I've been working a lot in the past week and even thought I'll get fired if I don't finish everything. It turns out, all the tickets on my plate are for next year's release, not at all part of the shit we need to deliver before end of year. Because of the lack of sleep and shit like that, I've been feeling really hot yesterday but when I check my temperature, it's lower than usual.
Now I'm gonna have a COVID test as a part of travel requirements. I feel paranoid that I might have screwed myself over by depriving myself of sleep over a deadline that is far into the future. I would have just worked on them with a regular amount of effort. It's just that they've been assigned to me almost two weeks ago. Now I remember that I finished all the things and had nothing to do but documentation at the time so I asked our senior engineer if I can work on something so he gave me these tickets.
Ugh, why am I this forgetful?6
Our neighbors need more toilet paper badly. I wonder if they’ll go door to ask asking people to spare a few squares next 🤔3
After working form home for over 18 months now, I start reprioritising things.
I relocated to Ireland almost 3 years ago and I love the people, and country.. but..
The government is a new level of incompetent, selfish (politicians) and clueless. Unlike any other EU government I’ve ever seen.
To this day I’m not allowed to leave the country to see my family. I don’t know many people here because most of them already left so that sucks.
Although my company is great, we got a new female CEO which (just my impression) feels like she gotta prove herself to the world and the company is falling apart since she took over. Seniors leaving on a weekly basis and new managers and grads get hired.
I could go back to the country I grew up in and make my 110k a year (which is a lot in Europe) and I could be close to my fam during covid shit. But I told myself to never go back there because I hate that place..
I’m seriously considering leaving the country I love to go back to the country I hate, make good money for 2-3 years and then come back.. but when thinking about going back there I could cry..
It’s fucked up but COVID makes me consider it..
If I could I would buy a cheap farm somewhere and go off grid 😅2
I really don't understand how developers from Facebook, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms still didn't figure out that ever since they introduced message previews on push notifications that those "seen" check-marks became utterly useless in most of cases..
This COVID-19 quarantine just confirms it, since nobody is doing anything else except being on phones and computers whole day but somehow it still takes them several hours to "read" the message..9
CTO for the picture.
This is so real, people are having a bad time because of the covid-19, productivity could be affected by this, my colleagues are having a hard time since they cant realy separate work from work anymore, the situation is hard as it is, i hope we all get through this.
Please Give Loving Comments below so i can show this to my dev/non dev friends that are having a hard time.12
Myself and a fellow coworker both joined post-covid, so we've never been into the office.
Considering our voices aren't a million miles apart, we're both rather tempted to introduce ourselves as the other person when we eventually go back to the office, just to see if anyone cottons on 😁1
On today's episode of devRant we have..... 🥁
No really, What's new in the world on this windy, cold, miserable, wait what day is it again? Oh Wednesday, I seriously had to look that up.
COVID staycation is blending the days together now.16
Shiieet ... I lost my appetite to learn new things and technology 😐😔 this pendemic need to stop asap.5
God I fucking hate my country! The moment it looks like we've managed to control covid spread by limiting movement between cities / municipalities and banning people from public places, and we may just be able to slowly loosen some restrictions, some fucktard on national TV starts telling people how all those restrictions are unbearable just because they came from the "wrong" political option. And people listen to that idiot more than all doctors telling them to stay safe.
The worst part is we probably wouldn't even limit movement if it didn't become obvious people are hoarding natural attraction / getting injured by extreme sports / inviting friends & relatives over when told to stay at home and avoid public places.32
Just my luck.
I was supposed to sign a new contract last week and get paid 2x more than now + get a lot of benefits. The day before, obviously, they just HAD to stop signing contracts with new people because of COVID.
Also my engineers exam is postponed indefinitely. They are thinking about making it online, which would be awesome, but again - it was supposed to be last week. A lot of stress and time wasted.
I know, those problems are really miniscule when compared to other, but it still is annoying as fuck.
Thank for listening to my Ted talk.7
Quitting job because of Java and legacy corporate OSGI codebase. Being junior developer I'm just done with no documentation, terrible team support and non existent code review. After 18 months I can't justify staying any longer. Never had luck with Java and I guess some things just stay the same.
Before covid 19 I was already working from home. But now I feel that the media makes it sound as if we have 40hours a day. Get more hobbies, practice them all, at the same time! Pfff2
This is probably not a popular comment, but here are the reasons I sometimes do not like working from home.
- if I don't get food, the kid starve
- if there's a meeting, the kid decides to play piano
- I have to watch delivered food that needs refrigerated to rot, while I really want to focus on that mudafukin bug
- if misus is not sleeping during the day, there is a 50% chance I smell something burnt in the house
Feel free to add to this list8
Covid-19 quarantine checklist:

Yeah...I saw a bat fly by the balcony.. I thought: oh, how nice, they never fly so close.. Wait...a bat?! Aren't bats supposed to start all this shiiii...O.O
Thoughts interrupted by a bat flap tap (sound it makes when it hits something) behind my back..
Quickly pull hoodie over the hair..and jacket hood to, just in case.. friend once got a bat tangled in her curly hair.. I didn't wanna test if straight but longer hair also make problems for them.. Some more flapping & scratchy noises (I think it fell on the umbrella) then nothing.. OMG did it die on my balcony?! How the fuck am I gonna explain a dead bat to the authorities who remove dead wildlife?! >Yeah, a funny thing happened the other day, I got a message from Wuhan and the messenger dropped dead on my balcony..< Yeah, this would totally work.. o.0 Anyhow, once the noises stopped, I turned around to check on it..but couldn't find it.. so I just hope it managed to fly away and I won't find it after 3 days in the middle of my apartment... o.014
Get ready for a awesome conspiracy theory/ WhatsApp forward :D i like how people are coming with new stuff every minute of their boredom . Makes you ponder:
How to dominate the world quickly?
THE GREAT CHINESE STAGE
1. Create a virus and the antidote.
2. Spread the virus.
3. A demonstration of efficiency, building hospitals in a few days. After all, you were already prepared, with the projects, ordering the equipment, hiring the labor, the water and sewage network, the prefabricated building materials and stocked in an impressive volume.
4. Cause chaos in the world, starting with Europe.
5. Quickly plaster the economy of dozens of countries.
6. Stop production lines in factories in other countries.
7. Cause stock markets to fall and buy companies at a bargain price.
8. Quickly control the epidemic in your country. After all, you were already prepared.
9. Lower the price of commodities, including the price of oil you buy on a large scale.
10. Get back to producing quickly while the world is at a standstill. Buy what you negotiated cheaply in the crisis and sell more expensive what is lacking in countries that have paralyzed their industries.
After all, you read more Confucius than Karl Marx.
PS: Before laughing, read the book by Chinese colonels Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui, from 1999, “Unrestricted Warfare: China’s master plan to destroy America”, on Amazon, then we talk. It's all there.
Just Think about this...
How come Russia & North Korea are totally free of Covid- 19? Because they are staunch ally of China. Not a single case reported from this 2 countries. On the other hand South Korea / United Kingdom / Italy / Spain and Asia are severely hit. How come Wuhan is suddenly free from the deadly virus?
China will say that their drastic initial measures they took was very stern and Wuhan was locked down to contain the spread to other areas. I am sure they are using the Anti dode of the virus.
Why Beijing was not hit? Why only Wuhan? Kind of interesting to ponder upon.. right? Well ..Wuhan is open for business now. America and all the above mentioned countries are devastated financially. Soon American economy will collapse as planned by China. China knows it CANNOT defeat America militarily as USA is at present
THE MOST POWERFUL country in the world. So use the virus...to cripple the economy and paralyse the nation and its Defense capabilities. I'm sure Nancy Pelosi got a part in this. . to topple Trump. Lately President Trump was always telling of how GREAT American economy was improving in all fronts. The only way to destroy his vision of making AMERICA GREAT AGAIN is to create an economic havoc. Nancy Pelosi was unable to bring down Trump thru impeachment. ....so work along with China to destroy Trump by releasing a virus. Wuhan,s epidemic was a showcase. At the peak of the virus epidemic. ..
China's President Xi Jinping...just wore a simple RM1 facemask to visit those effected areas. As President he should be covered from head to toe.....but it was not the case. He was already injected to resist any harm from the virus....that means a cure was already in place before the virus was released.
Some may ask....Bill Gates already predicted the outbreak in 2015...so the chinese agenda cannot be true. The answer is. ..YES...Bill Gates did predict. .but that prediction is based on a genuine virus outbreak. Now China is also telling that the virus was predicted well in advance. ....so that its agenda would play along well to match that prediction. China,s vision is to control the World economy by buying up stocks now from countries facing the brink of severe ECONOMIC COLLAPSE. Later China will announce that their Medical Researchers have found a cure to destroy the virus. Now China have other countries stocks in their arsenal and these countries will soon be slave to their master...CHINA.
Just Think about it ...
The Doctor Who declared this virus was also Silenced by the Chinese Authorities...18
Call me when covid-19 gets this bad:
From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (range: 195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (range: 8868-18,306) in the United States due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus. Yet almost no media coverage. The "woke" people were in charge then.
Until then media outlets, STFU...
When all is said and done the media will be guilty of wielding weapons of misdirection. The disgustingness of people willing to use this outbreak as a way for political gain is abominable.
At my work?:
People have not been able to travel so that has been annoying.17
Came down with the virus.
I thought it would miss me, and I would have a cool story to tell people about how I came out is the pandemic unscathed.
Now I will have absolutely 0 interesting stories to tell my grandchildren.16
Stocks are up, bitcoins is up, gold is up, bond rates are down... Which means prices are up...
COVID cases are up...
Nothing makes sense anymore... Maybe I should just give up...14
So here it's time to save world again. From 2 things now.
1. USA government trying to ruin encryption on internet once again.
First point is for USA people. Please look into it and call your senators and make people aware of the fucking issue. Internet privacy and safety is on the fucking line.
Second point for everyone.
Another virus I hear. Sure but this one is much more dangerous.
What can you do against it ?
Firstly wash your hands and all that safety stuff.
Now to the fun part of it.
Do you have spare PC at home or just PC ? Yes you lost likely do.
Then if you want you can join Folding at Home project.
This is where your PC is used to fold viruses and try to find a cure for it.
Sounds cool right ? It is.
And it is very easy to set up.
I'm not going to explain it here but download. Run. Configure and fold. Easy as that.11
This is a post about some gratitude. Many of my friends were not so lucky during COVID and their companies suffered. I am very grateful to be working for a company where my git branch name of a recent commit was 'feature/support-our-two-new-factories'. My company is thriving and growing :)1
Long time no see...
My first ever research paper was selected a few months back. Never been to a foreign country, but COVID fucked the plans... Conference on mid June.
The paper will be in press after the conference.
Conference: EuCNC 2020
Paper name: RFF Based Parallel Detection for Massive MIMO
I created a live covid19 stats tracking website.😷🚀
I also just launched this site in producthunt.
So if you find this website helpful in anyway then do upvote and share :) thank you.12
There’s literally poor people dying of COVID because they can’t get beds and my bosses are sharing shitposts on LinkedIn about fun “coming back to work games”3
Uni shut down.
So, what's my plan for this unplanned in-house vacation, you ask? Idk. Probably just staying in bed. Maybe bother with finishing all the damn annoying books I've left unread. Yay.
Also, FYI, about 99 years before covid19 broke out, the Spanish flu wiped out millions. We'll be fine. Lol.7
Get a "Covid-19" email from an online service I last used 4 years ago. The email boils down to 2 sentences of "we are working remotely as we have always done, there is no impact".
3 paragraphs of "here are the services we offer you should check out".
So, this is the story of my lay off from last organisation. It was just 4 months and i was getting good ratings in features development and overall timely completion. So, during this lockdown/Covid-19, one day out of the blue i and my teammate got a mail from HR to have a catch up. We were suspicious about that. My team mate was sure that it is regarding layoff but I was like we are doing well, why the hell they will fire us, and also it's only 2 of us who is handling the whole project, I don't think they will fire us; they are probably gonna discuss about something or may be covid situation. So my teammate was having his discussion earlier than me; after the discussion he told me that he has been fired, he tried to reason with them for half an hour but ultimately they asked him to put the papers.
I was bit scared, but still i was having hope that maybe..
So, the conversation started like this is the meeting..
HR- Hey, how are you. I thought if we can catch up a little?
Me- I'm good, what happened?
Tech. VP- See, we wanted to talk about your performance, from some past months you're not performing well and ...
Me- but i have been here just for 4 months and our team was the highest scorer in task completion last month.
Tech. VP- i know, i dont deny your technical capability. You're an awesome developer and technology wise you can achieve anything but your performance..
Me- ok, (to HR), anything will change your mind
Me- cut the crap and let me know how to put resignation via mail, bye.
And i cut the call.
The call lasted only for 7 mins, i was proud to not waste time on such assholes.
Such hypocrites are there...11
First day of vacation, on a remote village cause of covid, after months of doing nothing special I made this :D
It's a keyboard to do combinations of keys (prototype) ...
Well, I made it to play sound effects in games (on voice chat)....
Ya, having a burn out fucks your motivation. At least I did something2
This is a weird Christmas. Got sick recently, so won't be drinking. Covid, so won't be going out. Fam is halfway across planet, so won't be really spending time with them. Won't be having heavy food either.
Overall, this is an extended weekend for me.
If 2020 were a software, everything happened because that one dev keeps pushing untested code into prod3
What the heck COVID!
All the days have been blending together for the past 6 mo! What day of the week is this? Who am I? What's the meaning of life? Have I ever left the house?
Not going outside, getting alienated from my friends, getting somewhat anxious for no good reason...
Its so weird! This eery, suffocating stillness.
Alas! I hope the day comes soon that I may frolic in the multitudes of people!13
Seriously. I appreciate y’all.
To make this more of a story so as to not enrage those of you who get aggro about misuse of the categorization system... I’m a little anxious about starting the new job, but it’s more the stress of the possibility of not having equipment in time more than anything else. I have an appointment to get the first dose of a Covid vaccine tomorrow and I’m excited about that, though I’m kind of exhausted otherwise. I really feel envious of introverts these days.3
Super depressed rn and nobody to talk to about it. Stupid life problems. Can’t seem to learn new tech so if I lost my job I’d have to switch to landscaping or something. Can’t talk normal with people without someone taking offense at something I never dreamed could be offensive (stupid cancel culture) or trying to shut me down. Friends ending friendships and family cutting me out of their lives without communication as to why. My kids just don’t seem to care about anything I have to try to teach or share with them anymore. Nothing I do seems to matter to anyone or make a difference even when I’m trying to do good things for people. I don’t want to take my life but tbh if COVID got me I wouldn’t even be mad. I’d embrace it as my get out of jail free card.20
As a developer, I WAS love with the concept of WFH. Thankfully, my office has no fixed hours (except for meetings!) and I can work at my pace peacefully. But lately, with WFH becoming mandatory, I can't seem to find time for myself!
Here's what my schedule looks like:
a. Start working at 10am
b. Standup at 11:30am
c. Lunch break at 2am
d. End work at 7pm.
A fairly simple routine but not sure why my team finds it completely normal to call me in off hours and moreover expect me to jump in a call too! I wish it was a 1-day affair. But no. It's a 24x7 day affair. Yes, let that sink in. 24x7.
How I wish there was no COVID and thus no lockdown. At least, people respected the work timings then !5
Sorta related to previous rant
Get message from recruiter on LinkedIn around 10 last night "Are you available immediately? I need a Java dev urgently based in [my city]. Please to [email address]"
I reply, send email, accept connect request
See the post they made about position , literally says "Apply today, interview tomorrow, start Monday"
I could really do with this. Made sure to be up and about by 9 in case phone rings/to reply promptly
Hear nothing back. Check in around mid day "Yes, I got your CV. My emails have been flooded. Will get to it asap" Well, that was yesterday, still nada
Linked post is about other challenges in my job hunt with a different recruiter2
My rough assumptions on wtf is going on with covid changing our lives - maybe leading to some business ideas.
In theory we are indoctrinated from little child that to do something we need to go to special place to do things in community.
Name it :
As a result we build world around communities:
- public transportation
- 4 seated cars
- shopping malls
Now due to pandemic we’re unable to do so and from some time we start indoctrinating people to do lots of things remotely and stay at home:
- remote job
Depending on how strong is our character we react to this inception differently but future generations won’t have this indoctrination of commutation deep in their minds.
My first assumption is that robotics market will start growing exponentially.22
Hearing about all the layoffs due to Covid-19 is really depressing!!!
How can one work with utmost efficiency when the thought of losing job looms over like a dark cloud 😭😭😭10
Meeting starts at 9:45 AM. They only really wanna talk about the features they have on the horizon and how innovative and distruptive and rich we'll be. We spend 10, maybe 15 minutes talking about UI and details of the feaure. The meeting ends a few minutes before 12, so that's 2 hours of lunch (I wanna respect the schedules we had pre-covid to keep that rhythm). I start working again at 2 PM, but 15 minutes later, I get called again by one of the managers to hear more about this new great new idea they have.
So I work about 7-9 hours a day. But HR and management want to spend 3 of those hours. Suggestion: we'd improve our productivity by about 35% if we cut those daily meetings.6
The moment when a job application process that usually takes 3 weeks, is ongoing for months thanks to COVID16
How many ventilators do you need per 1,000 of population ?
Where I am, we have one per 4,700 people..
So, how many more do we need..
I would ask elsewhere, but it appears every medical forum I ask such questions in, is infected with assholes who are just abusive and refuse to answer the question, even though they are highly medically qualified and experienced.
It's almost as if, they don't want us to know how shit the situation really is !
Being how here is full of logical, intelligent folk, who are good at looking at the numbers, what answers might you give for this ?14
Hi my dear fellow coders, I have a small request for you.
If you are among those coders who are working on microchipping people / quantum dot something, tracking people, classifying people, AI, ML or any other such software which is going to harm or cage us or take away our freedom. Please stop doing so.
Why I came out with this rant?
I myself am working on a covid-19 screening app which would rate people based on symptoms and if they seem high risk they would not be allowed to enter unless they do a covid-19 test. I am tracking their movement and the requirement is to restrict people’s movement.
My conscience says that this is incorrect and and I should not be a part of such things which take away the freedom and liberty of people.
I am stopping it now.15
I know this is selfish, but this whole COVID-19 thing is driving me insane. The virus and quarantine I don't mind too much. What gets me is the number of people I see every single day having legit panic attacks because they can't buy "x" right now and it's the end of the world. I can't stand people who are literally in tears because they have to take an extra day off of work each week because of the state of the economy. I've been virtually unemployed for two years (not for lack of trying) and borderline homeless for six months. Grow up. You have a Lexus, a Range Rover, and a four bedroom house for you and your partner.22
Almost at my company for two years, and not a single raise or compensation adjustment. No bonuses. No nothing.
I was scheduled to get something in April, but COVID hit and fucked it up for everyone.
But hey, if you're on sales you get a BONUS on top of your commission for selling a product and get a mandatory meeting every Friday that the entire company has to attend, just to jerk each other off with deals we've made.
Yes, we make a product. Yes, you are hired to sell it. We cannot live without each other. Just blows that the engineers are under appreciated, underpaid, and just not cared about.6
A very cool overview of several recent studies of the COVID 19 pandemic on software developers. Taken from "A Tale of Two Cities: Software Developers Working from Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic" by D. Ford, M.-A. Storey, T. Zimmermann, C. Bird, S. Jaffe, C. Maddila, J. Butler, B. Houck, and N. Nagappan. https://arxiv.org/pdf/...3
Getting cooped at home to a avoid COVID is annoying because it got me remembering my ex. I hate myself for shutting down a few days thinking of him. If only there is an "Empty trash" button for emotions. Finally I get better today. I resume studying for work and target to pass the certification. Strive to be better!3
Have you ever prepared some of those cup noodles in the middle of the night and paired it with some cheap energy drink to get that old "back when I was a teenager and passionate about this shit" feeling back? Maybe get those cardboard McDonald's or some fastfood shit you can afford when you were a student?
Remember those thesis days when you can re-write an entire application in one night and now you have a simple task where you basically just have to copy/paste shit together and your response is "This is dumb, it's gonna take 13 days and 69 minutes. Also, I'm gonna be sick for 78 days, could be COVID, maternity, paternity, hemorrhoids, whatever."
Then you realize that carbs make you sleepy and caffeine has stopped working for your jurassic body since you've reached the ripe old age of 20 and became a MILF. Now you need Anlene or Diabetasol, whatever those things are. You want pomade on your hair while you dream of salmon and brocolli. You need viagra even for your brains, wooh.
Now you say, "Fuck this, it's bed time" at 10PM, woah granny, you forgot about cOdEcAdEmY. Are you ready to settle down to an IBM job and ping IP addresses or something? You gonna retire?2
Back in office after 5 months of COVID work from home... Now my office screen feels positively tiny - and curved to the back, because I'm so used to my 33'' curved LCD at home... FML.
My school is closing for the next three weeks and the two weeks after that after holidays. That means that I have no school for the next five weeks. And yes it's because of Covid-19.2
Took a week of PTO for a vacation because I'm pretty close to spent these days. Planning on getting in some kayaking and fishing I think, maybe some noodling on the guitar or read some Tolkien, as I really need to take a break from the computer and screens in general, and living in the latest COVID epicenter in the US I can do fuck all else.
I'm /really/ trying to force myself to ignore slack and work emails. I did all I could to leave my team prepared, and given that most are juniors who need A LOT of supervision since working remote, I fully anticipate having to fix everything and get shit back on track when I return next week. Telling myself it's inevitable so worrying about it now won't be any better than waiting till next week. LEARN TO READ CODE AND COMMIT HISTORY FUCKERS!
I know I have a full workload slated for the rest of the year and into Q1 21, so I know letting shit go for a little while is the best thing I can do for myself, and so that my family doesn't have to deal with me being a bastard all the damn time.3
And the stock market is plunging again.... Who gives a fuck....
It makes no logical sense? Unless someone wants to enlighten me... But I don't see much downside...
COVID kills us all => who gives a fuck about stock prices
COVID kills most of us => who gives a fuck about stock prices, aka pieces of paper. All the survivors will create a new society and either split the goods or fight over them. It'll be like Survivor... But real.
COVID goes away and doesn't do anything => great time to buy buy buy since all you idiots basically just gave me like a huge discount on stock prices. AKA a long overdue market correction9
Just started a new job as a software developer, even though I basically applied as an embedded software developer. I knew from the interview there was gonna be alot of legacy / high level stuff and they were pushing me away from embedded with the promise I could do it 'later on'.
Finally started and it turns out there's a shit tonne of legacy Python code for their non-existent test framework that's basically tied directly into a Qt GUI app and I'm doing shit that nobody else wants to do. Can't see myself wanting to do this for anywhere more than 2-3 months. Should I just bail now? Seems a bit dodgy if I leave having only worked there for a week? Job actually pays really well though.
Plan was to take an extended vacation around July/August, so quitting this early and then telling another employer later on that I need to bail for summer seems wrong also, not to mention COVID sucks and is making everything hell now.12
I think COVID has made me a workaholic...
That or the project I'm working on is interesting ... Somewhat...
I own the whole thing, because no one else has enough experience with the existing projects that it builds upon.
Sorta feels like I've built my own kingdom but I have to manage it all too...1
Hi, guys, about a month ago i created a covid 19 live tracking website for my portfolio. But today remember i could ask for review in devRant about the site. So i hope you give me any upgrade suggestion for the website.Anything like ui/ux or new content or faults etc
website link :
my company is "pivoting" way too goddamn fast; they are pulling devs from other projects and throwing them into something that is a fragile system (was supposed to be replaced already) and is using a completely different stack than most of them usually work with. they keep promising 3rd parties that we will knock out their requirements within a week or two, and as such they are pushing haphazardly merged feature branches into production with absolutely no regression testing.
then when shit explodes and operations grinds to a halt, they tell the half of the team that actually knows how the system works to drop everything and fix it, and leave the diverted devs to continue to develop shit based on requirements drawn on a cocktail napkin, and then they fucking push both the hotfixes and the newest features at the same time.
I probably have the most tribal knowledge at this company, and they are paying me ok, so it's enough for me to just pour some rye and suck it up for the time being and milk the gig. but this can't be sustainable, right? i'm passively looking around for other work, as I've already had enough being here for over 3 years, but i'm finding most places to be slow on the application/hiring process lately due to covid.
Edit: i think i used the wrong tag here, but what the fuck ever. i haven't figured out how to tag shit properly on any platform3
!dev but if i have been catching covid it is because of these strangers hugging strangers and the group of regulars joining tables (not sql) and way too many masks on arms or below the nose. germans are yet dumber than i thought.5
After practically a year since I last got to the dentist, and some 6+ months of painful toothache, finally got off island and had it removed.
Now to wait to see if I caught Covid-19 whilst doing that..
There was a slight risk of death if I hadn't had the tooth removed, and it looked difficult to DIY..
So, today's wisdom, dental insurance, and make sure you actually live close enough to a dentist should you need one..
And, hope it isn't shut due to all the staff being off ill !
Only took about 2 minutes to remove, after I got a double dose of anaesthetic since the first lot didn't appear to do much !
Long story = required playing politics to pull strings, to actually get to see a dentist.
Remember to look after your teeth.1
My local government made a website where you can check whether your registration for covid vaccination has been successful because the bureaucrats keep losing people's applications.3
I took a list on my job applications the other day. So far i’ve contacted 35 companies this year!
You can say about this covid crisis what you want but you can’t deny i’m pro-active. More talks tomorrow ánd friday. #wishmeluck
People become stupid for shopping and stupid because the government here is moronic. well deserved this kind of shame
Did some math about corona development in germany...
even if we immediately lockdown, the health system will be far overstressed.
we're literally fucked.
but dont believe me, dont believe the rki, go run the numbers yourself and keep in mind, that theres a 2 week incubation period6
Due to covid, mgrs decided to fire 10% but could not negotiate schedule increase with internal IT. With no promotions or hikes, few full stacks we have leave.
Now am working with 2 data engg doing cloud java microsvs work while learning. Their first delivery was applauded by their mgr who is under pressure to retain them.
I as arch review their code. No unit tests, print statements all around, shoddy exception handling, variable naming issues. We have Sonar by default in our build. They ignore the report. I ask them about it. Seems mgr told them he is getting a contract person from another team on part time basis to do/fix. I share my confusion.
Mgr calls me up and checks if we can put it as tech debt backlog and deploy to prod !!!1
Got sacked with no savings and safety nets like family to rely on. The industry in Australia is fickle at the best of times.. Now I'm well fucked.
How has the pandemic fucked you over, folks?4
I wonder how much more profitable is this year for Corona brewers :)
just sitting in a car next to a shop. I've never seen this many folks buying sixpacks of Corona.3
I’m seriously considering leaving my current team or even resigning from the organization altogether. I don’t blame anyone— I understand that managers have their own deadlines to meet and have to answer to their superiors when things go south. I have indeed developed a thick skin by getting used to all this shouting/blaming the last 3 months. But yes, I seriously don’t think there is any point in taking this anymore. It’s not good for my mental health.
My question to all of you is, is working at smaller companies better in regards to this? (I’m working at a big corporation now). And are they more unstable than bigger companies? (especially in times of COVID)2
Guys I work for myself and its great (love being my own boss) but after covid I decided to look for work for some company because financial stability is everything in this life
Last job I had, I quit because the boss asked me to make coffee sometimes. We had a good relationship but fuck that 'can you make me a coffee', go make yourself a coffee..
Please god give me patiece..
Pray for me 😅13
I know most of us engineers/developers/etc are quite introverted people, who are happiest when we are left alone with our best friends (we all know who/what those are 👨🏼💻), but I miss working with colleagues in the office, and seeing some faces as well :(
Discussing plans over hangouts/slack can sometimes be cumbersome, compared to face-to-face conversations 🤷♂️15
Public transport is slowly getting quieter and quieter. One side of my enjoys the silence and space, but the other side wishes I had the option to not take it either.
Everyone WFH, I envy you...2
I’m a homebody anyway and never want to leave the house. Now I have a valid excuse for not leaving the house. Feeding toxic and unhealthy behaviors? Yes. Is right now the time to care? Probably not. Queue bingeing 12 hours a day of Udemy courses.6
Debugging WebRTC is pure hell.
Solution: ask the marketing department or even the execs to video chat with you to test it on a staging server. So I push my changes to the server, wait for them to build, call my lab rat, check all the bugs, clean the code, push the changes back up. No fancy breakpoints. I'm doing the old style like my great uncle did. Oh wait no, he was pretty intelligent, but my lab rat isn't. They probably don't know what a console is. So no baby I'm not only talking about console logging the problems, I'm talking `alert` the heck out of the bugs - okay no, I'll just display the objects in the middle of the screen. The screen is my console.1
In India there was an incident yesterday, talk about being careless. A covid tracking app which was promoted in every media, paper and they even changed caller tune of entire nation to let people know and download the same app.7
A typical (Covid) day (for me) being self employed. I tend to start working at around 8am, only break to make coffee, and by 3:30 in the afternoon I fall asleep til 5pm. Then I get some food, play my bass, mess around in garage band, drink a bottle of wine, watch some crap movie, go to bed around 1:00am rinse and repeat. I never work weekends anymore. Interested to know your Covid day,.5
I think i need vaca. Launched huge project 2 weeks ago. Like Donald Trump huge. Well not really, Trump huge isn't huge so bigger than Trump huge. Lots of eyes on project. Replaced a critical system with messenger system. I'm tired. Was gonna take vaca after launch. But then was assigned another important task with hard deadline. Ugh...
I spend most of my days cursing covid. I either want to go to Puru on an ayahuasca retreat or go balls out in Amsterdam. But afraid when I get to either everything will be rediculously boring due to covid rules.4
So, this lecturer had a consistent set of question types every fucking year for the past 5 or so years. But now, even while covid and all the other shit that has been happening, he decides to change his question types, all of which used to be calculations.
I mean, really, which dumbass told him it's a good idea?
Aaaaaaauuuuuurghhhhhh 😡😤😠😫😩😖😭😡💀 I'm gonna fail 😭3
Work is still going great, but I'm killing myself with general anxiety about other things...
Covid, laptop is gone for now, phone is acting up, I don't have any backup device, I'm running out of money, need to fix my teeth soon enough, health-wise I'm pre-diabetic and almost obese, (not look-wise, rather weight-wise) as well I will need to check for hormones because I'm growing body hair more than I should and still am losing head hair more than I should, and I should quit smoking.
... but I still love the work I do, so what does life and gods have against me? :|
I have been taking deep breaths more often to just not lose my shit these days. Like, unless I end up in a great situation next, this all is so unfair.3
Hi this is my first post. Kind of annoyed at the job market right now. I've applied to a lot of positions without much luck. My internship last summer got cancelled bc of covid, so all my actual job experience is retail. It's hard to break into the field even with a college degree.8
Just got sad news this week, we could work less and earn less or after a few days some of us might even lose their job, the economy is not stable because of covid 19. I have mixed feelings about what is going on.12
So burnt out.
The worst sort of burn out is when your excited and you still wanna go but you can't seem to get your body to anymore.
Even on a forced break I seem to be thinking product.
I always thought it was so cool in movies where the coder is working there and sleeping there and eating there and chilling there.
Thanks to covid - I've first hand experienced this.
Oh and uh, I fuckin hate it.
I wanna go out.
I miss my coworking space with all the other idiots around me!
I miss eating out!
I miss going out for a beer!
Oh sweet beer how I miss the sweet breweries where I'd get fleeced for a pint!
Take my moniez! Pliz!
Just someone find a vaccine!
Best: leaving an overly stressful job
Worst: not dev but coughing up nearly a litre of blood sucked pretty badly. Covid y'all.6
Tldr: no router, almost not work.
Ok I recently moved into a new house, and I signed a contract for an Internet line.
Problem is that the router has been sent at the ISP shop, where I was supposed to get it personally. But guess what? Covid emergency happened two days after, and the shop closed.
So, after spending two days calling customer service of both ISP and Postal office without being able to speak to anybody, I received a Sms saying that the pack was not delivered because the receiver was closed.
After some more unsuccessful calls to the same two entities I managed to find the actual shop's phone number, that was actually thw owner's house (he's working from home). I spoke to him, told the problem, and he changed the router destination to my house.
Today I checked the package status on the postal website and I saw that it seems that they tried every day, at 7:02 am, to deliver the bloody package again at the shop! I truly hope this was a bug on their tracking system. It's weird that the hours were always 7:02am, because the package delivery office opens at 8:30 am, so again I'm praying any existent and non-existent god that that's just a bug. I'm kinda tired of being stuck with my phone hotspot with limited GB and with ISP public routers with about 5Mbps.
I wish I had @netikras skills with router building.4
WFH vs Office, what will be your preference in a post covid world?
I'm sure after the covid saga ends, there will be a plethora of remote and WFH opportunities since businesses are now ready for it. Most big companies in our place (Like Microsoft, Google, Amazon) have extended WFH till June/July, and Microsoft even said it's gonna be way more flexible in letting ppl WFH16
Due to Covid-19 my university got closed for 2 weeks, and at work we have to work remotely until further notice.2
My relationship with recruiters have always been a love/hate thing in the past. Some are super pushy and borderline bully you into accepting a job if they can.
A close friend of mine has lost their job recently due to COVID-19 related layoffs, and is now in a very vulnerable position both economically and psychologically. Enter recruiters.
This particular recruiting firm in my city is quite notorious for being unpleasant. I just hate how they treat people, and specially in my friend's case, pushing them for information like their previous salary when the recruiter doesn't even have a job lead!
I know they work commission and really want to close the $$$, but sheesh! So irritating!6
I used to think work from home have lots of pro like we can save our travel time, don't need to dress-up etc and I always wanted to do wfh. But this Covid-19 pandemic made me to hate work from home now I want to go back to office so that I have fix in-time and out-time and proper 8 hr work time.5
My company just pulled the trigger on wfh. They just sent out an email saying tomorrow's the last day any of the offices in the region are open. Come in and get your shit. See you on teams.
Most of us have been working from home for a while anyway but there's been a few holdouts wondering why no one's coming in. It'll be interesting to see their reaction. On teams.
Is a BS in CS even worth it? I’m struggling so much right now with many different aspects of “online learning”, to the point where I spend the entire day shaking in misery. I was fine until I realized how close we are to finals this semester. The worst part is, this semester isn’t my last hard semester. Taking two miserable CS courses in the Spring as well, so it isn’t as easy as just keeping my head up and making it through this semester.
I finished my AA in CS from a local Community College, and I’m wondering if it’s worth the stress of the next two years in this degree track?
I’ve never tested well, but these CS and Math courses hit differently when online. I pass every single coding project with ease, but fail exams (literally). I realize my AA doesn’t mean much, but I do have lots of experience coding (Way beyond what I’ve learned in school).
Truth be told, I think I just want to hear you guys say it’s not worth it. Most companies that I see requires either a BS or equivalent experience, how do I get that experience, especially with COVID?
I feel like a failure, and I can’t deal with this pressure on me daily. My mental health has taken a giant hit recently. I know for a fact that I cannot endure another two years of this.
Someone, guidance. Please.7
The house is quiet...
I work from home most every day. Then came COVID.
Working from home went from a wonderful experience to god awful most days.
It worked like root's rant:
So today for the first time in what seems like years (but really just a few months) I'm working from home and everyone is out of the house.
It will only happen a few days a week.... but oh man it is nice ....1
Worst: job insecurity, i. e. "due to Covid, unfortunately we can only renew you for 1 month for now" which kept on going from March till October and during which all sensible colleagues left.
Best: finally leaving this piece of shit management in October for a better position.1
My friend and me sit next to each other in the class.
One day, he tell me about his family. they have code equivalent of most common English words.
when the COVID-19 pandemic occur in our country, his father warn everyone in the house by saying
everyone start to
127.0.0.1 is a loopback address. aka localhost
IP masking is a way to hide your real IP.
255.255.255.0 is an example of subnet mask for IP
we used Ruby in this story.20
3 months inside. I couldn't do it anymore. All indoor dining and bars closed here. I'm sitting outdoor patio ordering shots and beer. Covid to hell.1
Started a new role as a front end developer working with React, happy that i finaly won't have to work with wordpress anymore, having a great hope that I will learn from the best with my team, and then ... COVID-19 ... I have to work from home
first task, implement a feature on a react front end build with react boilerplate, first time seeing this repo and dispair quickly took over, there is no documentation except for clone and install, the code is a mess, the console is filled with errors and warnings ...
I did what I could, but it was not enought, my n+1 didn't complain but if I was him i'd fire my ass with no regret, now I understood why almost all my collegues are working as a backend devs.
I don't fear being fired, I fear the feeling of being not good, feeling useless, each morning I stare at the code and I become illiterate, I can't even touch a keyboard, now I don't know what to do, fixing this shitty app, trying to build something with react boilerplate and try to understand how the data flow, or continue my endless tutorial hell .1
Soooo, thought I had the greatest idea in the world - fell sick for 3 days (minor fever NOT covid) and the idea don't feel too hot now
Plus im out of beer and I have to do actual work for a client :(2
Story of a first-time hackathon.
So, I took part in the COVID-19 Global Hackathon.
Long story short, I got excited at OCR and just went with the most challenging challenge - digitizing forms with handwritten text and checkboxes, ones which say whether you have been in contact with someone who could have Coronavirus.
And, unsurprisingly, it didn't work within 4 days. I joined up with 2 people, who both left halfway through - one announced, one silently - and another guy joined, said he had something working and then dissapeared.
We never settled on a stack - we started with a local docker running Tesseract, then Google Cloud Vision, then we found Amazon Textract. None worked easily.
Timezone differences were annoying too. There was a 15-hour difference across our zones. I spent hours in the Slack channel waiting.
We didn't manage the deadline, and the people who set the challenge needed the solution withing 10 days, a deadline we also missed. We ended up with a basic-bitch Vue app to take pictures with mock Amazon S3 functionality, empty TDD in Python and also some OCR work.
tbh, that stuff would've worked if we had 4 weeks. I understand why everyone left.
I guess the lesson from this is not to be over-ambitious with hackathons. And not to over-estimate computers' detection abilities.3
So they have a meeting to declare -
Then managers start talking about how good leader the ceo is & how nicely he managed covid situation.
Confused as to what happened here...5
There are few layoffs in my company due to COVID-19 and so now there's 3 times more work then usual per employee and fucking senior manager keeps on threatening that if we don't meet the deadlines, they will get us fired as well!
Have to do overtime every fucking day, also even on weekends, my life has got all ruined and couldn't do anything about it as getting a new job in this time is going to be a pain in the ass as well!8
Someone should really close the COVID-19 ticket. Or at least make it ready for technical/PO review.1
I'm loving it!
The best thing about it is that it's less of everything.
I save 2h of commute.
I can listen to music on my speakers with subwoofers to hear that bass.
I can take the pauses I want without anyone staring at me negatively, as long as I'm productive of course.
Less chances of getting the virus (the only risk is my mother who is a nurse).
I can be less apart from my family.
Less money on gasoline.
I think this virus outbreak is going to fundamentally change the way we do a lot of things.
Things like work (remote work), shopping online, digital money, and even the educational system (finally).
I hope everyone is well and stays well.14
Studying is frustrating.
I'm in school for IT Engineering and my country decided, that universities have to be in half contact and half non-contact classes, so I have to attend bi-weekly. The other week I'm supposed to join online classes, where the whiteboard is recorded with a 2009 laptop's webcam and the audio is also internal, if even the freaking teacher manages to not forget to start the teams meeting.2
I'm stuck in a rented apartment in my work-city and working from 'home' during the quarantine. Now, the owner wants me to leave for a month while he shuts down the place - right after the quarantine ends - when I HAVE TO GO TO OFFICE.
Here we go again...
Here(Kerala) covid cases raising day by day.. Almost like lockdown here.... Back to boring Online classes, heavy assignment, homeworks.... Here we go again...
Just like before....
Btw stay safe and be healthy... Our health is on our hand... Have a nice day❤5
With home isolation and remote working due to COVIV19 how do you people who live alone deal with being alone with your thoughts for 8 hours6
not a rant.
More coronavirus doomporn so click away now if you're sicking of reading and hearing about it.
As I wrote to sweetnothings and Demolishun over here https://devrant.com/rants/2476697/...
Looting already started in my area.
Store was robbed in broad daylight after it was broken into just a few days ago.
And when the next surge of stimulus money hits people are gonna be like "I better stock up seeing as the shelves are kinda empty."
And then the shelves are gonna empty *quick*.
And people will see that and empty them *even faster*.
And then even faster than *that*, in a vicious cycle.
At some point people might panic and proper looting could begin.
Got my tax return before any stimulus so I took the time to go shopping.
Of course I didn't buy up all of any one item. Don't know why people feel like they need to do that.
Why wouldn't you want a variety of supplies anyway?
Gravy for example. No one can get any meat. Saw that coming a month ago.
If you're just buying for bulk, packet gravy is nice for things like pasta and staples like rice and potatoes.
Little things go a long way.
And salt. Salt is cheap now. Probably will remain cheap, but expect panicking buying to make supply spotty, like
I expect these shortages to last 2-4 weeks, excluding things like dairy and meat which *could* go on longer.2
It takes a fair bit for me to enjoy an online course, let alone want to recommend it.
if anyone is looking at using their "free" time learning something new during these troubling times, i would go look at the Packt Courses.
@whocares suckered me in the other day, and i have to admit, i dont regret it.
So with that i would actually say to anyone wanting to get into:
- Data Science
then checkout these workshops.
you can actually enroll into all of them using the free coupon, so theres that ☺
one down side is the lack of dark mode, but im sure we all have browser extensions for that.2
With COVID going on, we're pretty much stuck at home, so
Vacation = staycation = early retirement
I took off 2wks ago, going back to work next week but it actually felt pretty nice.
Not having to really care about anything or rush to any schedule.
So yes maybe give it a try. Just do whatever it if you imagine yourself doing in retirement.
The difference is your body isn't old and disabled so you can actually do it.
I always hated handshakes, being an in crowed and public places where a lot of people wandering around so no problem for people like me but i see people are idiots.
BTW i am staying home today. I called in sick (I am not sick actually, just taking care of myself)
Shaking hands, kissing, working together and private offices staying open.
and some company owners including mine are like :2
Now, instead of having to schedule a single rest day during my college's spring break (I normally have to schedule one day instead of getting the entire week due to being online... hooray), I get an entire 2 weeks off where the school is on lockdown and literally no one but like 150 cops will be there. Why? Not due to COVID-19, but due to threats against the school. A hooligan found out that if a school's main campus burns down or is otherwise destroyed entirely, everyone instantly gets their Bachelor degree (why this is a thing, I dunno...)3
Has any of your previous client contacted you during covid 19 period hoping you’re out of work and available to work for them for cheap?
The client who contacted me was visibly disappointed to know covid has not affected my work.2
You know, I don't mind getting dragged if I deserve it. But it would be nice to have ALL the information I need to make an estimate BEFORE you hang me out to dry.
First I was told that work on this issue could be kicked down the road since we were getting big contracts. The next day the issue was in the sprint.
I tell you I won't be able to get it done with the business critical stuff you said absolutely had to be done that sprint (turns out we had 3 months of leeway even before COVID). You say alright cool. We push it to next sprint. The next day you say we have been pushing that issue too much and we absolutely have to get it done this sprint. At least have it so QA can look at it by Tuesday.
I give a preliminary look to QA cuz I found a bug, but they can test other shit about this fucking issue, but then get shut down fucking again because it isn't code complete.
STOP. MOVING. FUCKING. GOAL POSTS. AND. GASLIGHTING. ME.
And as a bonus, I disagree with the necessity of this work in general. I think it's fucking stupid, unnecessary, and zero value added. It's a management jerkoff issue that is going to piss off all of our users.1
Prepared for Interviews for 4 years; Got a degree in the way;
Postponed to next year due to COVID-19
Now, I have 1 more year :)2
Has anyone looked at the IHME curvefit project?
It’s the statical data model used by the whitehouse to make decisions regarding covid-19. Not a data analyst or python dev but this repo seems super sparse and only two people are doing most of the commits. I would think they would have more contributors.
Any data peeps want to weigh in?13
I swear to god as I see the copies and it same people running around if I have to hear one more person describe a trauma buried time period when everyone else was destitute and being a whore as COVID that they updated far and away towards their own freakish mutated purposes imma shoot someone
Seriously why can’t you people just life normal lives ? Why make existence into a drama filled prison sentence targeting everyone who just tries to retain sentiment and turn the world into a scrapyard of glitching human robots ? I want to know
Case in point record and gradually amassing property defends against this you people traded your futures to the very kind of people most of you are54
so yea, ive been emailing japanese professors to take me in as their grad student. but theyre not accepting new international students for 2021 AY maybe because of covid.
this is sad, i need to be there next year. but things arent going well.
my plan B is to become a research fellow at my current uni after i graduate next year, get some research published and fortify my arsenal for 2022 academic year.1
I don't know why, but I find making MEDICINES just as amazing as programming. We program computers & they program a human body or an animal body. AWESOME!
BTW, I really hope that the COVID-19 vaccine will soon be available for everyone.4
University : you know with remote working no-body know if you really work at home. For that reason you cannot remote work on shiti snowy dangerous day.
Covid-19 joined the conversation
University : look how its fun to remote working ! Is the new technology of the century... Now everybody in quarantine can work at home and the business lose nothing.
Me: yeah you bet mother fucker
University: don't take it like that is a gift.
Me: i will take it like a gift if you give it to me before the apocalypse fucker ...2
With the approaching end of the summer season and reduced Covid restrictions (replaced by empty warnings that no one is following) we suddenly have an abundance of certain group of people, who are doing whatever the fuck they please, one of those things being intentionally over the top loud when it comes to driving their vehicles. By the vague description you may have guessed that I'm speaking about motorbikers, or how I've come to call them from now on: "faggits on wheels". But how do you deal with these huggers without going Mad Max on them? Fling sticky pepper spray pellets at them? High dB directional speakers? Water canon?2
How are you all enjoying those restaurant websites lately? I have to fight the urge to try and build one. It sounds like a bad idea... but - I just think - they could be improved!!! Any good examples out there?7
For once I actually read the discussion threads in Facebook about COVID all morning basically commenting saying "are you people stupid, use your ducking brains" but basically just said believe what u want...
But wow did I get pissed off... Probably even worse than my rants about my team...
So guess I finally understand the negative and divisive effects of social media now...1
Just heard South Africa is going into national shutdown and only essential businesses will be operational. (Hospitals, food, water, etc.) We currently only have 402 cases.
What's interesting is that our systems are internal (not connected to internet almost at all) so I need to setup our git repositories to be accessible from internet so I can work from home.
I am honestly done with COVID-194
Fever, sore throat, full-body aches, migraines...
COVID or am I just fucking dying? I have been to town a lot, so...?12
Men fo real! I dont rant so much because I think its a negative attitude but let me do it anyway! Listen. My boss boss told me to create a dynamic drop which I did. A backend request then display it on the frontend which is easy, then on code review he ask why do we need this error handling. Bruh as soon as I heard that question, I got covid. Bitch we do need that error handling because if theres error on requests it will set to default options, but I didn’t say anything tho. I just ask what will happen if there’s an error?, he said I don’t think a simple request will respond error if you did it right. Then I agreed and remove the code. Hot damn! Mind you guys. When they started the app there are no test code. 0, nada, nothing inside the spec folder.9
An interesting (little dramatical) article depicting the stages from how the covid 19 enters the body silently to its worst case scenario
If you like IT predictions (or guesstimating), after this covid thing, e-commerce will probably be highly demanded special for small and medium business that are more sensitive to this kind of crisis. Try learning those small framework for e-commerce
Been working on a Covid App in this quarantine. Right now it’s only on Android but still can get the view from the page below. Do give it a go..
open for suggestion and bugs!3
Working from home.. no airconditioning.. no fan ('cause Covid particles danger).. f************ck.21
I am feeling stressed right now.
I have completed 4 Years of Working and I am getting paid very less, it's not like I don't work hard but still due to Covid our salary have being same for last 1.5 years, and this is making me frustrated.
I am responsible for many things in current organization and don't want to run from responsibility but yet I am sole earner of my family. These thoughts are making me stressed , help me decide what I should do.
I feel shy to ask for raise.6
When you get told by the company that they don't feel like running your product anymore even though it is profitable and so they are fitting you in the middle of a pandemic.
A week of vacation has begun, and every time it feels like I'm joining the Nights' Watch:
"Night gathers, and now my watch begins.... the watch to see how long it is before I actually WANT to go back to work. Tuesday? Wednesday? How long IS my Netflix queue anyway? Ugh, can't go anywhere, COVID done fucked that all up, so me and the couch are on a first-name basis again. Shit, should I check email, like, just quick, so I don't have thousands to go through next Monday? Oh, maybe I should spend some time prototyping that new screen... no, gotta keep from thinking about work! Oh, there's a big list of home repairs I need to do, now I have time... no, fuck that, that shit sucks. Hmm, maybe I should start that game project I was excited about a week ago? Nah, I'm not really excited by it now, never mind. I guess I could play some Halo again... no, that's boring. I wonder if my team managed to do the deployment today, and how those tickets I Ieft them are coming... ah shit, I want to go back to work ALREADY!"
That's how George R.R. Martin wrote it, right??
I had my last day at previous job in mid Jan, and 1st day at new job, thousands of km accross the country, in another city, in Feb.
I had great difficulty in finding an apartment that's decent and close to my office. Finally got one with a hefty rent for 1BHK, hefty brokerage and a hefty sum as security deposit; in March. Within a week, I spent shit load of money buying things, like a new fridge, washing machine, chair, table etc...
Didn't live there for 7 days, as soon as the lockdown started.
Every month my heart shatters paying the rent :(
17.5k INR :(6
No, I have no idea what's going on here, and considering how much the privacy implications of this app have been discussed this seems like an egregious oversight. I'm not even sure I can summon the effort to properly rant about it.1
How mush longer do I have to sign into every app I use with 2FA? Not being on the company network is annoying...
THERE'S SO MANY TEXT MESSAGES!!!3
Let's be honest - given the state of the world today, the more I listen to Megadeth, the more I relate to what Dave Mustaine has been pissed off about for a few decades now. Oh, you don't know who Dave Mustain is? He was, like, the 5th guy in Metallica. Rather, he was the bass player until he got fucked over because he was a dick and thrown off the first album Metallica did. Don't worry - he did OK. He formed Megadeth and still had quite a successful musical career. Why am I ranting about him? Simple - A lot of his lyrics are darker than Metallica's. I honestly don't know what the fuck I'm doing with my software/personal/professional life right now. I've got ideas & dreams, but all this COVID shit is just draining the fuck out of me. Sometimes I feel like I've failed - most of the lifeforms on this planet manage to procreate. Well, that didn't happen for me. On the down side, I didn't get to be a father. On the up side, I didn't punish the life of a child with my own brands of mistakes, ignorance, and stupidity. My life is littered with male failures. My biological father (paranoid, schizophrenic ) died at 58, doing everyone around him a favor. My grandfather on my mother's side died of colon cancer at 69 (so-called reformed alcoholic, manic depressive on lithium with great abusive tendencies). My step father who adopted me? Sure - he loved me. He just never understood me. "Computers are just a tool". Fuck you, 'dad'. Go play with your horses and tell me what I'm doing isn't meaningful. Where was I? Oh yes, almost killing myself last summer. I think between COVID and my own colossal screw ups & paranoia I went over the entire fucking edge. I pulled myself out of it with the help of medication, counseling, and learning to just let shit blow up because "it's not my problem". I'm still angry. Perhaps that's the only thing that keeps me going from time to time. I'll leave you with a quote from Ghandi - No, not that idealistic, limited one, Mahatma Ghandi. From his grandson, who managed to really pick up what he was putting down - Arun Ghandi:
“Use your anger for good. Anger to people is like gas to the automobile - it fuels you to move forward and get to a better place. Without it, we would not be motivated to rise to a challenge. It is an energy that compels us to define what is just and unjust.”
Spend the past few days 3D printing those mask holders on my 3D printer, currently sitting at about 72 pieces in total to give away to friends and family around here :)8
Dev Health Rant!
Hey guys, so I've been supper busy working most of the time and doing passion projects, very recently I've noticed eyestrain at the end of the day. Lights seem too bright and far away stuff seems a bit blurry, this doesn't happen on weekends when I don't look at any screen.
I feel like shit because of it, I can't go to the hospital since they are COVID crammed, I'm thinking about asking for a 2 week PTO to see if it subsides and buy some blue light filter glasses.
What do you think? Anyone in a similar situation?18
oh shit oh shit oh shit...
Do to my horrible anxiety about covid-19 I have not been calling into stands up in the last 2 weeks or doing much work.
My boss just messaged asking if everything is okay.
First msg I said yes and sorry was having techinal difficulty.
Then I msged him back saying it would better if we talked. I can see he is on a conference call so no response.
Should I be honest or list fake technical reasons?
He is pretty cool boss but only been there since October.11
Even if world heals from Covid 19, I don't think Bill Gates and his family is going to recover from the PR damage.
The image he built up through his philanthropy is in shambles. I don't know if it's misinformation by conspiracy theorists about vaccination agenda, but Bill gates' smirk during his interviews on a serious subject is definitely not helping him.
He is gonna have a really really hard time coming back from this.28
When there's an error in the url you get the code 404
When there's a server error you get 500
When there's an error in input you get 400
And so on ...
The IANA should add a code for when every error happens and call it 20204
We Introverts are going to look back to these days, Don't forget to make some memories...
... No one is asking to go out, Employers are offering work from home, to many of us it's the same old same old, in the mean time I wish y'all the best time...
to do amazing things, complete your pending projects, gist some funny/important stuff, read/write a little, organize you machine/room/life, take on some DIV projects, code better and automate the boring stuff (basically everything and anything)
I am planning to make my own version of our beloved Jarvis (just in case If I get my hands onto mind stone :p)
News: Coronavirus lockdown could last for much longer
Introvert living alone: so happy best feeling
Introvert living with their family: kill me, kill me
now I can't hold it3
So i guess Zoom and other video conferencing applications are feeling the pressure! I am currently taking an online class for my bootcamp, and the audio and video are both so glitchy!1
Kind of thinking of making one of those COVID-19 infection simulators. Might be interesting to use a particle swarm type of algorithm for it.10
Covid gave me the ability to be really productive from home - work on personal projects and collab on projects - from all the ideas I had for lock down fitness was the one that was let slip due to too many projects I wanna build.1
I think we should ask the CDC to start versioning viruses. I mean we started with COVID-19. From what I hear it should be COVID-19.1 or COVID-19.2 by now.2
Joining a new company in 2021 as a tech lead. What are your top three pieces of advice l, esp given everyone is fully remote still given Covid-19?3
Completion of vacation: 90%
Completion of TODO list: 20%
Reason: got sick... FML, maybe covid... or just a bad cold6
Hey guys is there anything we as devs could do regarding this covid-19 situation in terms of our technical skills? Like any project or something for making awareness at global or local level, or some status update regarding various things/items that are affected by this pandemic?
I am looking for ideas or currently ongoing projects that i could contribute to. Currently my tech stack is limited to java, python , android and a little bit of basic data analysis, but i am fluid enough to learn and contribute.7
So far I can't get a non-abusive answer to this question in the medical forums I've asked, so on the off-chance someone here either knows the answer, or knows someone who knows the answer..
Before I go and venture elsewhere, like:
So, my question is:
Paracetamol and Asprin not suitable for COVID-19 virus suffers ?
The country’s health minister, Olivier Véran, who is a qualified doctor and neurologist, tweeted on Saturday: “The taking of anti-inflammatories
[ibuprofen, cortisone … ] could be a factor in aggravating the infection.
In case of fever, take paracetamol.
Yet here it says:
10 minutes and 30 seconds in roughly he mentions about Paracetamol /
Aspirin / Ibuprofen and something else I'm not familiar with name wise, to avoid as they lower body premature.
So, correct answer is ?
(Ignore the rest of the sites content, this is just about the old fashioned approach to dealing with viruses.)
> Fever management:
> Evidence vs current practice
Which to me, points towards you wanting to keep your temperature high enough to help your body kill the virus, not to lower it, unless its above say 42c..
I hope others here can see / understand my question, and don't just automatically dismiss it in very unkind words as a load of shit.
If the idea is wrong, I'd like to know why, with a decent technical answer !
My concern is the wrong medical information is being given out, and it is up to people like me to question things.
Because if I don't do it, who else is ?8
Working on my thesis right now... Can't concentrate at all, I try to focus but constantly fail at it. Any ideas how I can get back into study mode?
Would love to got to the library to write, but due to covid it's obviously closed.4
Just found out I passed the coding interview phase. Next step is a "live" (covid adapted) whiteboard interview.
I haven't had to do one of these before. Anyone have any advice on these?1
Finally started utilizing this quarantine time and started a new project.
Name - Hermes

About - Send Cloud message notifications (like FCM) to your users.
Features I am planning -
1. Send notifications to users based on any specification you want. (eg - users on app version 1.2 and using OS version 9.0 or 8.0 in region India)
2. Search on previous requests and responses.
3. Draw trends on the responses and further actions by the user.
Current tech stack -
2. Java 1.8
5. Elastic (Planned)18
So I am a fresher and have worked a lot in coding and good at full stack and reactjs.

I ordered an EEG signal decoder from A Dutch company. But it is stuck in Delhi due to the virus. When are they going to allow shipment of non-essentials ?14
Sometimes HELLO WORLD can be fatal...
Guess how ? 😕
Just see Covid-19 virus saying HELLO WORLD....
And here we are in a pandemic5
I made an app for tracking Covid-19.
Can I share the app download link with my friends here or is it against devrant to share such things12
I'm on vacation this week but spent yesterday going to the post office for the Nth to follow up on undelivered mail. When got a diff package that said was delivered... But wasn't.
This morning wake up feel sorta sick but was OK, called USPS mail number and waited 1hr to get a person. And they said the post office closed all the cases I raised regarding the missing mail.
They said they will escalate these.. Which and to be just we'll do something, eventually maybe.
After the call I felt tired so went back to bed... Woke up 3hrs later (1pm) and sorta sweaty. Maybe a cold/fever.
I have an hard to schedule appointment with doctor tmr.
So took some meds and now hoping I feel better tmr and don't have COVID..... Just so I don't need to cancel...
And if I do go there only news I expect to hear is they discover some new health problem.
Some vacation this is.... Still gotta deal with the unending onslaught of problems in life....8
Thank you mom 🤷🏻🤦🏻
Mom: make a list of all the stuff and let me know what to store for you

Me : internet
M : make a list for everyone ,till tomorrow9
Except COVID-19, Airport security is also scanning preflight requests and incoming traffic for CORS with its dated test kit (found this unused gem in an old PHP codebase):
So India launched this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/... last week.
It tracks your location and let you know if you have come in close proximity with someone who has been tested COVID-19 positive.
I don't wanna debate about the privacy concerns as India doesn't really get these things.
As for the moment, I will happily trade my location data for my life.7
Working on a (mostly) off-grid LAN.
Basically just a real-life meetup in or around Arnhem (eg. somewhere in a park) where we have some banter and some offline IT (or non-IT, whatever people attending want) fun.
Of course, taking the covid-19 shit in mind.
wrote an entire custom DNS server (using DoH only atm) for it, added a Matrix server (along with Element so people have a start) and a wiki for it :)
Still need to add a Gitea server (or similar, any suggestions?) to it tho.
Gonna see to have some trial-runs by myself (or maybe with 1 or 2 people) soon.
Soooo exited o see two months worth of planning and development start coming together :313
Well I might be asking too much, but is it possible to get a mentor for free in learning android development and perhaps get help from him/her to land a job?
About me: I'm an undergraduate student, currently unable to get a job because of COVID-19. I have experience in Programming problem solving. I also do android development for about 2 years and have 2 apps published in google play store.4
Had a discussion about the future post- covid.
He said he and his friends don't go out much now bc of it.
TLDR: all houses will have a clean room at the door and a suits hanger2
I work at a small shop.
Just a few devs and a handful of other people.
Good people. Even before COVID I worked from home a great deal.
But man there was always a lot to do at a small shop with priorities changing based on this customer's need or that one.
Now with COVID things are slowing down a bit and I can see some light at the end of the tunnel of my backlog.
I really would like to do some serious refactoring of an application I wrote, I'm embarrassed everytime I have to fiddle with it ;)
I was in an interview and all they really could tell me was the projects 'on the shelf' how they were understaffed, and new opportunities due to covid, that were coming onto the current development pipeline.
How would you guys react to a headhunted talk at a company structured like that? Just curious, it spooked me a bit at first.2
I deployed a website and hosted it today. Also used a SSL certificate but now when I'm opening it on another device with its own data connection, it is not loading and showing error "This site can’t provide a secure connection".
But if my device is connected to wifi, the website is functioning normally. Can anybody help me out? My website - https://covid-india.live/4
Thank you for sharing this informational stuff . if you want to stay safe by covid-19 so visit our website: https://www.deconvirion.com/3
hi guys, I wonder if you can help me, I've been asked by my Line Manager to liase with an app building firm that is going to make an Angular APP and host it on AWS (Amazon Web Services). I've never used AWS before and have no idea what to expect for pricing.
The APP will be educational, questions, answers and resources like slides, text and video etc and available to 400 pupils over 5 schools in place of regular workbooks that they currently use but are unable to due to covid-19.
So that's 2000 pupils all told. What AWS services should I use and what is a fair bill I can expect from them in the UK. The boss is insistent that we have our own AWS account and self host the app when it's done.
I have no experience of this at all so any help will be appreciated. Cheers everyone in advance!
Also the AWS website is a confusing mess and their chat options are not working at the time of posting this lol.4
I needed to send feedback through email, so I use thunderbird as my default email client, and as soon as I hit the send button, the message failed to send, where then I’m prompted to login to my gmail account on my computer.
Hey google, go fuck yourself. Gmail on computer is a fucking piece of trash. If you had not shut down inbox just yet, then I would use that. Gmail takes like over 40 seconds to load on my computer, which is why I use thunderbird because of that. I refuse to use your horrible piece of trash website and now you want me to login again. Seriously just fuck you.
Also, I’ve been getting Chinese spam in my main inbox rather than in the spam folder ever since this COVID/coronavirus shit started. Know any better choices? I would like something that is free, as long as they don’t have an affiliation and/or partnership with google.4
What did you do with extra time due to Corona virus and what recommendations do you have for a cs undergraduate considering the situation?5
Hey I just joined this website. Code Drip from youtube suggested this! I am going to be starting my first corporate IT job this July.
But because of this shitty pandemic, my joining is going to be very delayed. Is this a very bad time to start my career? Any suggestions or resources to keep myself busy and be ready for my first job will be highly appreciated.
I am looking forwards to reading some rants here!5
Salute to doctors to fighting to corona
Salute to army and police to maintaining security
Salute to IT to maintaining balance in economy!!4
My late 2015 iMac won’t get past the progress bar on the startup. I’ve tried every combo keypress/restart procedure I can dig up in multiple Google searches. Starting to get worried I’ll have to completely wipe and reinstall. Online Apple support is not helpful. Genius Bar in my area is not taking appointments still due to COVID. And money is always too tight to buy anything other than another used Mac. Anyone got a surefire way to get back to a login screen? At least to ensure my backup is up-to-date before I wipe it and start over?7
Well, it doesn't necessarily affect my work, but apparently E3 2020 was cancelled because of fucking covid-19, which does affect my happiness to some extent. It really may be the end of the world as we know it without new games to get hyped about:
What kind of office do u prefer working at?
1. Big open space (with tables and no separations)
2. Open space with cubicles
3. Medium room (3-5 ppl)
And did ur preference change due to covid?8
I really admire and respect devs here in our country that are helping to build useful apps to combat covid-19 pandemic but please, if the National Government already has this kind of applications or in their pipeline (covid contact tracing, qrcode checkpoint, assistance, etc..) please do not try to hijack by creating similar app and market it. Instead of helping it creates confusion on which info to follow (ie DOH tracking) and which to use. #random2
I'm sure this will have no privacy or security implications whatsoever. 100% foolproof and not a problem.
The latest news report makes my stomach turn. South Africa moves this month from a level 4 to a level 3 lockdown. No more curfew.. still no traveling or renting accommodation for leisure though. Ban on public gatherings, gyms, dine-in restaurants, tobacco sales remains in effect. Sale of alcohol is limited in capacity and sale can only occur between certain hours of the day.. its such bullshit, of course there's going to be an upsurgence of Corona as they lower the lockdown level, which will make them panic and possibly raise the lockdown level again.. or just keep us at a level 3 until they think we've successfully "defeated the curve".... for those of you who don't know, our presidented declared a national state of disaster ar the onset of the covid-19 scare! 🙈 vok my lewe
Can’t tesla’s self driving cars used to deliver Groceries ?
Grocery delivery should not be a life or death choice for people3
How did the pandemic screw you and your life plans? Tbh there are more serious matters connected with that but just for the sake of my lifeplan: I paid off my debts and was ready to start my travelling spree and visit the countries everybody already have been and maybe go nomad. But pandemic hit, and i am right now stuck in my life which is clawing its way to become my permanent reality.8
Does "Education Technology" fall under "Education" for getting the Covid vaccine? Or do y'all think that is kind of stretching it?
Nobody where are authorized to do remote working
Covid-19 : everybody look how its fun to do remote working ....
Ya 🖕 please
I’m worried, as I’m sure many of you are about covid 19 and work drying up. I can work from home but who’s gonna want to get a new site or app done now with so much uncertainty!1
Nice. It took me two hours to figure out that Helm was reading from the wrong config file. Two fucking hours. I'll just blame it on Covid-19 and call it a day.1
All students building are close to stop the propagation of the virus. But you web developer are an essential services you need to be there for two week to make an remote course system in 2 week 😆🤭3
So as we start to scale we are recruiting "a lot" of profile on the tech part. And for fuck sakes it's complex while covid shit storm!
No pub for the first tech interview, no late restaurants, a lot of "let's wait till next quarter"... Fuck....
And the worst of the creep is that I "have" to stalk/spam some profiles for the "hunt", and I'd like to clean/purify myself afterward...
People of DevRant who are involved in recruitment.
Eventually I want to look for a new job as a "proper" developer.
I've just started the 2nd level/year of my OU degree and I'll be working on that for another few years.
I won't start looking seriously until after covid etc and the economy has calmed down a bit.
What sort of projects do you recommend someone trying to get their foot in the door should have on their portfolio?
Should it be fully fledged applications like a big tracker/help desk or smaller projects which showcase knowledge of a particular subject e.g. programs that show knowledge of different algorithms etc?5
Hey rants! So I am going to test Balmer curve once again! Preparing regression model for altered SIR model with time dependent parameters (for Covid). Wish me successful code!
