I contributed to my first open source project on GitHub. It is so much better and fun to do. Why have I not been doing this since 🤔😊😁

Interviewer: For this next code challenge you will not be allowed to use the internet, or an IDE.
Dev: …
Interviewer: OR a keyboard OR a mouse. I will be verbalizing the code to you and you need to memorize it and tell me where the bugs are.
Dev: …
Interviewer: We must do this exercise to know how you are as a dev without any performance enhancing “aid”. This way we can understand where you are truly at skill-wise, and what you are truly worth from a compensation perspective.
Dev: …
Dev: If I get a job with you will I be allowed to use the internet and an IDE and a keyboard/mouse?
Interview: Of course you would! Getting anything done without those is just about impossible. We just need to evaluate you without them to see how good you REALLY are.

So, I applied for a job lately and the first interview via Zoom went pretty good. Then I got an invitation for a second interview at the company.
I got there, was guided into a conference room and the two head of departments along with an HR woman joined. After a bit if chit-chat HR rep said I should tell them in the next couple of days if I'm still interested. HR left, the other two gave me a tour of the complex, lasting about an hour.
then we got back to the conference room, waited for HR rep and when she arrived she told me something along the lines of "Yeah, we got an impression of you now and you don't need to contact us anymore if your are interested...."
me to myself: "wait what? that sucks...."
HR: "We are impressed enough of you that we want to hire you immediately. Here is the contract!"
me (completely speechless): "oh... OH... THANKS, but... OHHHH" (having a stupid perplexed grin on my face)
I mean... I got the job and pay is good, but PLEASE don't trick me like that!!! I nearly got a heart attack!!!7 -
Oh you're a frontend guy? Good, we need one of those.
Oh you're a backend guy too? Good, we need one of those.
Oh you're a security guy too? Good, we need one of those.
Oh you're a devops guy too? Good, we need one of those.
Oh you're a QA guy too? Good, we need one of those.
Oh you're an SEO guy too? Good, we need one of those.
"Well, sorry to say fullStackCraft, but we found your cloud architecture skills just a little too lacking for this position. We really need someone who can do frontend, backend, security audits, QA assessments, SEO, AND build scaling cloud architecture. Oh and while you're at it, can you turn fucking water into gold? We need that at our company too. You didn't get the position, but it'd be great if you could refer us to someone who is very advanced in fucking alchemy. Thanks!"
Absolutely toxic the way software people are treated I swear. The money may be the only good thing that is left.19 -
Q: What's a "muscle memory"?
A: It's when you open up devRant, skim through several posts, get bored, decide to visit some other website for more stimulation, close the tab with devRant, open a new tab and your hands type in devrant.com [ENTER] before you know it4 -

Stupid fucking project managers, just posting some slurry in Slack:
"User can't get into app!" _sends useless screenshot_
Yeah? And? I have no context on what time this was, what device, where, how, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
You want me to just telepathically jump to their location on earth, sniff the electromagnetic spectrum waves to sleuth out what exact requests they made and when to figure out what the problem is?
Just shut up. Shut up14 -
"Canceling failed, please try again" (seen last year as an actual JS alert on a German railway loyalty website5

When I was in elementary school, my pc got a virus. So, after I look it up, an article suggest that deleting system32 on my windows will solve my problem. I think everyone here knows the rest of the story.4

Is it common to look at code you wrote 1 to 2 years ago and think "what the hell was i thinking, this mess needs refactoring"?10

In my three years experience so far I can honestly say that 100% of the developers I've worked with are narrow sighted with regards to how they develop.
As in, they lack the capacity to anticipate multiple scenarios.
They code with one unique scenario in mind and their work ends up not passing tests or generates bugs in production.
Not to say I'm the best at foreseeing every possible scenario, but I at least TRY to anticipate and test my code as much as possible to identify problems and edge cases.
I usually take much more time to complete tasks than my colleagues, but my work usually passes tests and comes back bug free. Whereas my colleagues get applauded for completing tasks quickly but end up spending lots of time fixing up after themselves when tests fail or bugs appear.
Probably more time wasted than if they had done the job correctly from the start. Yet they're considered to be effecient devs because they work "fast".
Frustrating...7 -
Manager: How come the intern does way more tickets than you?
Dev: Because you told me to only give him the easy ones since he either can’t do them otherwise or takes too long on the hard ones
Manager: Well how is he going to learn if we only give him easy ones?
Dev: That’s what I told you when you orig—
Manager: Assign him ALL of the hard tickets on your board immediately!
*Tickets closed per day drops significantly*
Manager: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG ON THESE TICKETS!!!!!

Worst: being forced back into the loud distracting office, to add on to the badness the covid restrictions were not taken very seriously
Best: getting a new full time remote job and an awesome company with some awesome team mates
Bonus is I now work from home fully but can still hang out with my great former coworkers -
when i was fired as an external contractor with half an hour notice, because i didn't process enough tickets. I didn't process many tickets because:
1. In the morning everyone grabs tickets just to stop the timer.
2. I worked on some complicated tasks that involved multiple third and fourth parties(not to forget an fucking dropping firewall)2 -
In my company, we create roadmaps using Microsoft PowerPoint.
If you need me, I'll be crying in the darkest corner questioning my life choices and existence.15 -
Was there a post about:
"Love french fries as this gentleman does. <a link to some website full of 3d french fries animations>"
If yes, can someone give a link?1 -
Developers who use JavaScript "eval(...)" deserve a normal place in hell.
Developers who use JavaScript eval() within eval() deserve the most special place in hell. 🔥17 -
I have been trying my best to fix a broken process and a product that never saw the day of the light.
Aligning all the teams, trying to bridge all the feature gaps, and at the same time learning this new product and company culture.
Now this lady comes to me with a requirement. I have zero clue what it is and instead of empathising with me that I am new and should dumb down her ask, she kept throwing heavy product specific terms as if I have been working in this team for previous 9 lives.
Anyway, I take her ask into my product roadmap and try to prioritise it.
Now I connect with them again for some discovery and she is passive aggressive towards me that it's been more than a year no one is considering their request and started whinning.
I have just joined the org 6 months ago and you start attacking me for someone else's mistake?
What the actual fuck! Go fucking die bitch. Never again I am taking her request.
If she has a problem then just speak it up and take it with leadership. Don't fucking be passive aggressive with me especially when I am not at fault and infact I am trying to help her.
And in interviews they ask people whether they are a team player or not.
