Sprint 0: This design is the appropriate amount of engineering abstraction.
Sprint 2: This is over-engineered, too much work
Sprint 5: This is under-engineered, too many edge cases
Sprint 10: This is over-engineered, component Foo could be replaced by a bash script
Sprint 42: Foo is now the cornerstone of half our business logic1 -
Me: Overcommunicate…
Them: we don’t need that kind of detail. We all get it.
Me: Undercommunicate…
Them: why so quiet? Does he know what he is saying?

once I had this burnout where I started hearing this weird high pitched noises coming out of my laptop
Sounded like a TV was constantly in the process of being turned on.
Throughout the next few weeks I proceeded to fully disassemble that laptop, reassembling it just to conclude, in the end, that it was indeed burnout.
Unfortunately, by then my health had deteriorated so much I woke up one night to a motherfucking excruciating nutsack pain
I immediately rushed to the car: I had felt this pain before, it was kidney stone labor. I was giving birth
While driving to the hospital, constantly shifting in the driver's seat, wondering if I should stop the car and just crawl the rest of the way you know what the fuck couldn't leave my soul?
The thought of that little tiny fucking high-pitched noise
And you know who the fuck followed me to the hospital? The fucking high-pitched noise. All around the fucking ER.
That's until doctors put me on a morphine drip. Friend, I assure you, there's no burnout cure like morphine.
3 days later, when I finally came back home, the noise was gone.10 -

Dev: Why do you have an identical if statement right below this one?
Manager: Because I want the code to double check, obviously.

Use this as a template to send rejection letter to your recruiter as a revenge.
"Dear Recruiter,
Thank you for considering me for the software engineering position at your company. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your offer.
As a highly qualified and skilled software engineer, I am confident that I could bring a great deal of value to your organization. However, after reading the job description and learning more about your company, I have come to the realization that I am simply too good for the position. I have no interest in joining a team where my talents and abilities would be underutilized and unappreciated.
Furthermore, I am a bit concerned about the working environment at your company. I have heard rumors that the office is dingy, the cafeteria food is subpar, and the company culture is lacking. I am a true perfectionist, and I refuse to settle for anything less than the best.
In conclusion, I must decline your offer. I wish you and your company the best of luck in finding a candidate who is worthy of the position.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]"6 -
I am so mentally drained from having to deal with the intern who I have to literally spoon-feed every single thing. My previous posts illustrate the situation...
The language and cultural barriers are too much, and I am too afraid to open my mouth because of the sensitive nature of my country's history and I'll get labelled as some horrible person.
I told my manager today that I'll stick it out until end of January (thankfully I am on vacation for most of December and January), but I cannot work with her. She was supposed to move to the data team end of December, but my manager told me if she can't even properly grasp this HTML and CSS stuff, then she will not be able to do the other tasks they have for her.
This was a disaster of an experiment and I'm somewhat traumatised ( I am sure the intern is too) and I never want another intern again, nor do I want to manage people. I never said I want to be a people manager, I just want to quietly code at my desk.
This company sells MBTI psychometric assessments and they damn well know my preference, so I'm seriously annoyed that they threw this horrendous surprise on me and kept ignoring my requests for revisiting this intern's role, because I noticed a long time ago that she was struggling with basic concepts and all they did was make her do Udemy courses.
I told them multiple times that she seriously needs computer literacy training because she will not survive in this industry if she still struggles to understand how files and folders work. Other employers would have fired her a long time ago.
She's just too slow for this job. I feel sorry for her, but I do not have the capacity to do this anymore. I'm tired, it's been a long year.7 -
Spent years ranting about being a contractor and freelancing. Finally got a job at a big company. Now I'm hating it and missing my old flexible work life. Hello dev rant, I'm back!4

My girl friend was complaining that I care more about programming than her.
I told her,
"Trust me baby, in the array of my interests you are [1]."
She was satisfied.5 -
Can't believe I'm about to say this, but:
Systemd-container is a rather cool SysD extension.
It allows me (Root on most servers) to switch to a customer account in a completely new session, setting all the .profile and .bashrc stuff up, so I can do stuff like control their rootless docker, and no longer have to add my SSH key to their authorized_keys file then re-login under their user.
Nice.1 -
I'm finally gonna quit!
Turning in my resignation tomorrow.
I can't wait to see the faces who took advantage of me!. First time in a while, I'm excited about Monday 😂

typescript is shit.
I have never seen such a stupid bug in other languages.

Apparently, there is no way to do type narrowing in a nested object without using enum12 -
I switched to Comic Sans for any internal communication.
Those in delivery/support/sales/HR/emotional crap/professional buzzworders/etc no longer take me seriously and therefore I no longer waste my time with their BS.
If not an improvement in the more materialistic side of the career itself, certainly an improvement in the quality of life.3 -
